The Asia-Pacific combined heat and power (CHP) market is expected to register a CAGR of more than 5.9% during 2024 to 2027, reports the market analysis group, Mordor Intelligence. Factors such as the positive outlook for natural gas supply and price, increased energy efficiency, and environmental regulatory pressures on power plants and industrial boilers are expected to drive the number of installations of combined heat and power plants across Asia. However, factors such as weak grid interconnections and high capital investment remain a significant challenge for Asia-Pacific’s combined heat and power market. Biomass-based combined heat and power are expected to witness the fastest growth during the forecast period in the region. Market analysis suggests that small-to-medium industrial facilities could benefit from flexible and cost-effective combined heat and power systems. Such systems benefit from conventional combined heat and power but could also provide support to the electricity grid in the form of electricity supply, frequency regulaTHE ASIA-PACIFIC CHP) tion, and reserve capacity. This, in turn, is expected to create MARKET WILL A significant opportunities for the combined heat and power system REGISTER A CAGR OF providers and plant developers MORE THAN 5.9% shortly. China has dominated the DURING 2023 TO 2027.” combined heat and power market, with the majority of the demand coming from the industrial application of CHP. Over the last decade, Asia’s biomass industry has grown significantly as it is a carbon-free process, as the resulting CO2 is captured by the plants being combusted. Biomass combined heat and power is a beneficial technology for sites with a constant demand for both heat and electricity, mainly when the site is off the mains gas grid and where biomass fuel is readily available. In cogeneration mode, the total efficiency may reach 85%-90%. Integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC), using black liquor (a by-product from the pulp and paper industry), are already being used. Abundant resources and favorable policies enable bio-power to expand in China, Japan, and India. The proliferation of small projects, including digesters for off-grid applications,, is recorded in all significant economies of the region. Several biomass-based are planned to be commissioned in the region in the coming years, driving the sector’s growth during the forecast period. A good example of this is the Minokamo biomass power plant, with a capacity of around 7.1 MW, which began full commercial operations just last month.

SOUTH KOREA’S LARGEST POWER GENERATOR TO JOIN COLOSSAL AUSTRALIAN GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT Kepco has signed an MoU to co-develop the Western Green Energy Hub, which will see 50GW of wind and solar power producing 3.5 million tonnes of renewable H2 annually. Kepco, the largest electricity generator in South Korea, has signed a key memorandum of understanding (MoU) to join the development of the giant Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) in the state of Western Australia. The project - being developed by a consortium consisting of Intercontinental Energy, CWP Global and the Mirning Traditional Lands Aboriginal Corporation - is due to see 50GW of renewable energy, including 3,000 wind turbines and 2.5 million solar panels, installed across 15,000sq km of land. A proportion of this green electricity will be used in the region, but it is also due to produce 3.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen or 20 million tonnes of green ammonia annually - which suggests that 25-35GW of electrolysers would be required. The consortium is currently assessing wind and solar resources at the selected site in the sparsely populated Goldfields-Esperance region of southeast Western Australia, on land owned by the Mirning people. Final investment decision (FID) on the project is scheduled for 2027. However, the full project could take 20 years to build. However, the inclusion of Kepco in the consortium could be a good sign for the project’s ambitions to export green H2 and ammonia, as well as supplying the domestic market. Kepco is increasingly establishing partnerships with developers of international gigawatt-scale green ammonia projects which could export large volumes to South Korea for power generation. In October 2022, Kepco signed an MoU with Saudi state-affiliated developer ACWA Power to co-develop and act as the offtaker for potential projects in the Middle East and “other agreed geographies”. Kepco is also the parent company of Korea East-West Power, which is a member of one of the consortia recently awarded land for green H2 and NH3 development in Oman.

56% OF THE WORLD’S ENERGY WILL BE GENERATED BY APAC REGION
The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is projected to generate 56% of world’s energy by 2030, says a report by GlobalData. A report - “Tech in 2030 – Thematic Intelligence” suggests reveals that the APAC region is expected to experience the highest growth in electrical energy production – with generation rising 3.9% every year between now and 2030, compared to the 1.8% in Europe and 1.4% in North America. The question is - will renewable development will be able to keep pace? Robert Penman, Thematic Analyst at GlobalData, explains: “Traditionally, growth has been reliant on
increasing fossil fuel use, which is at odds with the burning need to decarbonise and limit the effects of climate change. “Further, climate change will increase energy demand and consumption even further. For example, air conditioning systems will be increasingly necessary around the world. “The APAC region has some incredible potential for renewable development, but it is clear that the decisions made by leaders in this region between now and 2030 will be felt all around the world.” The APAC region is projected to generate 43% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, driven by investment in China.

ENERGY SUCCESS AT THE LARGEST LANDFILL POWERPLANT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
T
he prudent use of resources is an essential basis for our lives. Global population and economic growth are increasing the pressure on natural resources such as raw materials, land and biodiversity. Therefore, the careful and efficient use of natural resources is becoming a key competence of sustainable societies. Waste management is a critical component. In Malaysia, the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill provides a long-term solution for solid waste management in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill is the largest in Malaysia and was developed by Berjaya EnviroParks Sdn Bhd (BTEP). Bukit Tagar Sanitary is designed as a Level 4 sanitary landfill based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standards. Level 4 is the highest achievable standard and ensures maximum protection of the environment. This sanitary landfill receives almost 70% of the solid waste from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill receives approximately 2,000 tons of waste per day and operates seven landfill cells. SP Energy, the authorised MWM distributor for Malaysia, was instrumental in working with the developer to design the first 1.2 MW landfill to energy plant in 2011. SP Energy designed, installed and commissioned the landfill gas cleaning system, which consisted of a gas chiller dehumidifier, activated carbon filters and blowers in addition to the gas engines. The first engine has been running successfully ever since, with a total of over 75,000 hours. Over the years, Berjaya EnviroParks has expanded its power generation fleet. As a result, the Bukit Tagar landfill now has six engines of 2 MW each (TCG 2020 V20) for a total capacity of 13 MW. All of these engines are grid-connected and the power is sold through the feed-in tariff mechanism. This makes the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill one of the largest landfill power plants in Southeast Asia. MWM is represented in the Malaysian market by the authorised distributor SP Energy Sdn Bhd. Under the leadership of Mr. Syed H. Kebir, covering East and West Malaysia, he has established MWM as the leading brand for biogas power generation, cogeneration and natural gas power plants in Malaysia. SP Energy Sdn Bhd is supported by Caterpillar Energy Solutions Pacific Pte. Ltd. (Singapore), the Asia Pacific regional headquarters of Caterpillar Energy Solutions GmbH.
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
The market success in Malaysia is founded on the excellence, the well-recognized technical expertise of SP Energy for project generation and the relentless marketing and business development efforts. SP Energy has representatives focused on handling enquiries throughout East and West Malaysia. SP Energy has its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and a regional service center in Lahad Datu, Sabah (East Malaysia) to service the Sabah (East Malaysia) engine population. SP Energy offers a complete lifecycle service, including Long Term Service Agreements (LTSA); this includes after-sales services such as the sale of original spare parts and trained service personnel with appropriate competency levels to handle the entire maintenance cycle, diagnostics and troubleshooting of

abah is a state of Malaysia located on the northern portion of Borneo, in the region of East Malaysia. The land is classed as having a tropical geography with equatorial climate. The palm oil industry is one of the leading agricultural industries in Malaysia with average crude palm oil production of more than 13 million tonnes per year. Sabah Softwoods Berhad is 70% owned by Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd, the investment arm and holding company of Yayasan Sabah Group. Its core business is timber and oil palm milling and woodchip production and the company manages the running of Kapilit Palm Oil Mill in Sabah. Palm oil mills generate substantial amounts of POME, which is a byproduct of the oil extraction process. This mill is equiped with a biodigester system (covered lagoons). Biogas production from POME helps mitigate these issues by utilizing the waste as a fuel resource in the power generation plant and reducing its environmental footprint. This gas is treated before used in generating sets through a H2S scrubber. What do Guascor power generation engines offer in this power generation market? Great performance and reliability in applications such as Capacity Market, Peak Shaving, Fast Start and Distributed Energy. They are the perfect ally for industrial processes where electricity demand is high. They are the perfect solution to provide power to different industrial processes such food, textiles, ceramics, chemicals or biopharma. The great flexibility when using different fuel qualities allows power generation wherever it is needed, always complying with the strictest requirements of the market. In 2014, the mill was equipped with its first unit Guascor Energy soundproof containing a Guascor Energy biogas 1 MWe genset, to fulfill the energy needs of the plant and the estate housing area.
