MOBILE POWER GENERATION / OUTPUT SYSTEM PROVIDES EMERGENCY POWER

T

oyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Honda R&D Co., Ltd. (Honda) are jointly working on a mobile power generation/output system called Moving e. This consists of a fuel cell bus designed to carry a large amount of hydrogen, portable external power output devices and portable batteries. Demonstration testing of this new system’s ability to deliver electricity anytime and anywhere will begin shortly. A company spokesman commented: “When a power grid is damaged during disaster such as typhoons and rainstorms, people suffer from an interruption in the supply of power to their homes and evacuation centres. “To address this issue, Toyota and Honda will bring technologies together to create a mobile power generation/output system and conduct demonstration testing delivering electricity to people.” Taking advantage of its mobility, the Moving e can be utilised as a “phase-free” system which can be used in times of a disaster to support disaster response by

MOVING E CONSISTS OF A FUEL CELL BUS WHICH CAN CARRY A LARGE AMOUNT OF HYDROGEN, PORTABLE EXTERNAL POWER OUTPUT DEVICES AND PORTABLE BATTERIES. HONDA & TOYOTA ARE INVOLVED WITH DEMONSTRATION TESTING OF THE SYSTEM’S ABILITY TO DELIVER ELECTRICITY ANYTIME AND ANYWHERE. supplying electricity in an affected area, as well as in normal times for routine uses such as supplying power at an event. Through this demonstration testing, the two companies are looking to confirm the actual needs of people and verify usability of the system. The Moving e mobile power generation& output system will consist of: * Toyota’s Charging Station fuel cell bus * Honda’s Power Exporter 9000 portable external power output device *Two types of Honda’s portable batteries: LiB-AID E500 and Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP)

* Honda Mobile Power Pack Charge & Supply Concept charger/ discharger for MPP. The Charging Station loaded with all equipment will be driven to a required location and the Moving e will supply electricity on the spot. More specifically, portable external power output devices and portable batteries will be used to take electricity out of the fuel cell bus, which serves as a power source, and feeds electricity to electrical appliances. The technology is based on the previous version of Toyota FC bus, and the Charging Station fuel cell bus comes equipped with twice as many high-pressure hydrogen tanks. These significantly increased the amount of hydrogen it can carry, enabling the Charging Station to feature a high-output and large-capacity power generation capacity. This generates 454kWh with maximum output of 18kW. In case of power outage during a disaster, this large capacity enables the Moving e to supply electricity in indoor areas such as an evacuation centre, as well as inside vehicles. This is achieved by storing electricity generated by the Charging Station in large-capacity portable batteries, namely Honda Mobile Power Packs and LiB-AID E500 via the Power Exporter 9000. Furthermore, the Charging Station itself can serve not only as a means of transportation but also as a place for people to rest in times of a disaster. The two companies are keen to verify the effectiveness of the Moving e mobile power generation / output system as a phase-free system. They are looking for endorsement and approvals from municipalities and businesses which fulfill the necessary conditions and are willing to co-operate with the testing. PANASONIC’S MANUFACTURING PLANT IN MALAYSIA - COMBINING MWM NATURAL GAS COGENERATION AND NON-FREON AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

S

elangor, Malaysia - Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Corporation (TGES) and Panasonic Corporation have commenced operation of their power generator and air conditioning system at Panasonic’s manufacturing plant in Malaysia through their local subsidiary and affiliate. The system combines energy service using a MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas engine cogeneration and eco-friendly non-Freon air conditioner. In Malaysia, blessed with abundant natural resources, industrialisation is driving growth in energy demand, pushed partly by the increasing installation of air conditioners at large-scale facilities such as factories. As the energy demand is expected to grow further, environmentally-friendly energy supply is required in the country. TGES and the Malaysian city gas company, Gas Malaysia, in which Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. indirectly

holds stakes, jointly founded Gas Malaysia Energy Advance Co., Ltd. (GMEA) to develop an energy service business mainly using cogeneration systems based on know-how cultivated in Japan. Through this service, GMEA has been contributing to energy conservation and reduction of CO2 emissions. On the other hand, Panasonic regards the air conditioning business as a key business that drives the company’s growth. In the field of commercial air conditioning equipment, one of the company’s strengths lies in the air conditioning system employing absorption chiller technology, which uses heat of vaporization released when water used as a natural refrigerant evaporates. Panasonic’s non-Freon air conditioning system “Natural Chiller” with water as refrigerant effectively uses steam and waste heat generated at plants and other facilities. Since this eco-friendly system was released in 1971, Panasonic has been adding refinements to make it more efficient and compact in design, which has enabled the company to continue to provide eco-friendly and comfortable environment to large spaces, such as public spaces and factories. Under such circumstances, GMEA and Panasonic AP Air Conditioning Malaysia Co., Ltd. (PAPAMY), which manufactures and sells air conditioning equipment in Malaysia, signed an energy-service contract and started operation of their highly efficient power generator and air conditioning system at PAPAMY’s manufacturing plant on October 17th, 2018. This system consists of a gas cogeneration system and “Genelink,” an absorption chiller with

auxiliary waste heat recovery, and cools the plant by utilising the waste hot water produced during generating electricity. GMEA has installed a 2 MW cogeneration system MWM TCG 2020 V20 fueled by natural gas on the premises of PAPAMY, providing comprehensive services for each phase of the project, from system design, construction, procurement of fuel, maintenance, and to electricity and hot water supply. PAPAMY uses waste hot water from the cogeneration system as a heat source to operate Genelink. With the installation of this system, PAPAMY aims to reduce energy inputs by approximately 9% and CO2 emissions by approximately 22%. The companies intend to use the PAPAMY project as a showcase of a sustainable factory climate solution consisting of a cogeneration system fueled by natural gas and a Genelink absorption chiller usg water as refrigerant. They will continue to contribute to Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries through the provision of highly efficient and environmentallyfriendly energy supply and a comfortable environment. The MWM gas engines of the TCG 2020 series are perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment. MWM’s models in the output range of 1,000 – 2,000 kWel meet the high requirements of a broad range of applications and guarantee efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability. More than 2,000 power generators with approximately 2,800,000 kWel already installed around the globe. For more information please visit: www.mwm.net

THE PERKINS 4006-23TAG2A ENGINE RANGE IS DESIGNED TO DELIVER SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE THROUGH EXCEPTIONAL LOAD ACCEPTANCE AND AMBIENT CAPABILITIES.”

T

he Le Meridien group of hotels is one of the most prestigious hotel chains in Asia. This group is renowned for maintaining an international standard of service and facilities in all its hotels. Le Meridien began its operations in the city of Jaipur, India, in 2003. The hotel features a world-class spa with massage and meditation rooms and two innovative restaurants. The property is spread over 25 acres with 126 rooms, has a river- shaped swimming pool, four food and beverage outlets, and four business centres. Maintaining international standards of operation in the hotel industry is not an easy task. A truly memorable experience at a hotel not only includes opulent architecture, which is pleasing to the eye, but also an uninterrupted delivery of service, which is not marred by an erratic supply of power. Keeping this in mind, the Le Meridien group of hotels needed a generator set solution with the power and reliability to provide a steady supply of power for up to 500 hours every year. The Perkins 4006-23TAG2A engine range is designed to deliver superior performance through exceptional load acceptance and ambient capabilities. Its 23 litre, 6 cylinder body provides an excellent power to weight ratio and enables lower emissions. Since its installation, the generator has consistently supported the hotel in making the its customers’ stay very comfortable and truly memorable. Hemant Sharma, Engineering
