In January 2020 the value of solar-power projects in the MENA region was estimated at between $5 billion and $7.5 billion. By 2024, that figure had been projected to approach $15 billion to $20 billion in overall worth. Since March 2020, however, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused major disruption for solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing companies operating in the UAE and has prompted a major rethink on the global solar PV supply chain for the future. The Solar Outlook Report 2020 launched at the Solar Forum of the World Future Energy Summit at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in early January 2020 had been fairly optimistic. Prepared by the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA), the largest regional body of its kind, the report showed how Saudi Arabia and Oman had joined the UAE, Morocco and Egypt as leaders in the renewables race. Then, of course, things ground to a standstill with the COVID-19 shutdown. Saudi Arabia was in the third year of implementing its key target of 60 gigawatts of renewable energy generation by 2030.. Martine Mamlouk, secretary“ENERGY COMPANIES general of MESIA, said that investment in solar energy had GENERALLY SEEM been widely evident across MENA CONFIDENT THE countries. “Saudi Arabia has a target of almost 60 gigawatts of DECLINE COULD BE renewable energy, out of which 40 gigawatts are solar,” she told the SHORT-LIVED” media. “This is in line with the Kingdom’s objective of diversification and Vision 2030. While the industry is reaching grid parity, we had been able to see the deployment of new innovative technologies to increase efficiency of systems, production management and grids.” Currently, a number of solar projects in the Kingdom have more-or-less stalled. These include Madinah, Rafh, Qurayyat, Al-Faisaliah, Rabigh as well as Jeddah, Mahd Al-Dahab, Al-Rass, SAAD and Wadi Ad-Dawasir, along with Layla and PIF. Saudi Arabia’s energy demand has been rising steadily, with consumption increasing by 60% in the past 10 years, according to data provided by market researchers Frost & Sullivan. Demand for electricity in 2019 reached 62.7 GW and had even been projected to rise by up to 120 GW by 2030. “Many solar PV developers in Asia and other parts of the world have experienced prolonged delays in importing solar PV modules as the manufacturing capacity of the countries is concentrated in a few major markets such as China, the US, Taiwan and Japan. Most of these nations have been impacted by the pandemic. In addition to this, many of the developers around the world are dependent on the Chinese manufacturers to provide the PV modules,” reports Somik Das, senior power analyst at GlobalData,

SAUDI POLYSILICON PLANT BUILT BY HYUNDAI RELIES ON CUMMINS POWERBOX C1250 D2R
IN BRIEF
A Saudi polysilicon plant built by Hyundai Engineering and Construction has made an important contribution to Saudi Arabia’s drive for greener energy in recent years. Established at Jubail, on the Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia, the facility produces annually around 3,000 tons of polysilicon, a crystalline material increasingly used in the manufacture of solar panels. World polysilicon production has rocketed over the last decade, and this complex at Jubail - Saudi Arabia’s largest industrial city - is the first polysilicon manufacturing facility in the region. What most people do not appreciate is that the site would not be able to function without the vital contribution provided by Cummins PowerBox™ C1250 D2R containerised generator sets supplying 15 MW, rising to 33MW. This technology was brought in at an early stage of plant construction by Al Faris Equipment Rentals LLC at the request of Hyundai E&C. Thanks to the support and training available from Cummins, Al Faris was able to take complete responsibility for all design, project and application works. Al Faris had been thinking ahead and planning for large-scale rental projects of this type, so Cummins Power Generation rental specification 1,000 kW C1250 D2R PowerBox™ generator sets were already in stock in Saudi Arabia. Five of these were initially required to supply 5 MW, 15 for the interim plant, and 33 for when the full installed capacity was reached. In challenging environmental conditions, and with only limited space available, Al Faris was not only able to match Hyundai E&C’s expectations, but also cover its future needs. Polysilicon production is a continuous process, and so the power supply has to keep 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
84,000 KILOMETRES OF CABLING LAID ACROSS SAUDI POWER GRID Just 12 weeks ago Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) completed more than 84,000 km of cabling which constitute the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s national power grid. GAS TURBINE FLEET ACHIEVES ONE MILLION HOURS OF COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems’ (MHPS) J-Series gas turbine installed fleet some of which operate in the Middle East - has reached one million hours of commercial operation. This MHPS j-Series turbine range is set to meet new and higher standards for reduced carbon emissions. Introduced in 2011, the J-Series delivers an industry-leading overall reliability of 99.3%. The air-cooled JAC model delivers 99.5% reliability and efficiency greater than 64%.
F
orty-three J-Series gas turbines are in commercial operation, and total ordered capacity exceeds 25GW globally. One hundred units have been technically selected in Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Peru, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA. In the Middle East and North Africa, with similar technical selections and with achieving lowest tariffs in some of the region’s biggest and most iconic IPP project tenders, the J/JAC machines provide the region’s power industry with best-in-class performance. This includes attaining record low cost of energy, emissions reductions, as well as setting the highest standards for operational flexibility and power supply security and stability. Akimasa Muyama, senior executive vice-president and chief technology officer of MHPS, said: “As we reflect on the important milestone of achieving one million operating hours with our J-Series gas turbine, we know that the most important part of that accomplishment is that we ran for all those hours with 99.3% reliability.” Recent innovations to the J-Series target further reductions in carbon emissions. Recently, the company received an order from the Intermountain Power Agency, in Delta, Utah, for two JAC gas turbines capable of using up to 30% renewable hydrogen fuel. Eventually, these turbines will be capable of using 100% renewable hydrogen fuel. While a 30 per cent Hydrogen fuel mix can eliminate one million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year for a typical gas-fired plant of 1100-1200MW size, the 100% hydrogen system will eliminate carbon emissions entirely. Paul Browning, president and CEO of MHPS Americas and newly appointed chief regional officer for Europe, Africa and the Middle East, commented, “Going forward, every gas turbine MHPS sells globally will have renewable hydrogen fuel capability. “This allows our customers to purchase a natural gas power plant today and convert it over time into a renewable energy storage facility.” Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) is the one and only company in Japan which handles the entire production process from development, design, manufacturing, construction and commissioning to after-sales service for large capacity thermal power plants and their core equipment using its own technologies. With the highly efficient, advanced J-Series gas turbines, MHPS raised the bar for combined cycle performance, says the manufacturer. The J-Series gas turbine was the first commercially

available gas turbine capable of sustained operation at turbine inlet peratures of 1600°C, and set a new high level of Combined Cycle efficiency. The design is based on the proven G-Series gas turbines, with enhancements to the compressor, cooling technologies and turbine aerodynamics. The first J-Series gas turbine began operation in 2011, followed by long term validation at MHPS’ Takasago combined cycle power plant (‘T-point’). Featuring improved 3D compressor blades, advanced combustor cooling and state-of-the-art thermal barrier coatings, the J-Series turbine realizes the promise of advanced gas turbine innovations – delivering record breaking combined-cycle efficiencies with low NOx emissions. This efficient use of fossil fuel at low NOx and low CO2 emissions levels makes the J-Series combined cycle plant one of the most environmentally friendly power generation options available.

Combustor Options *M501J: The M501J also successfully applies steam-cooling of stationary combustor components, based on the proven M501G steam cooled technology. With a turbine inlet temperature of 1600 °C, this unit achieved trend setting combined cycle efficiencies of approximately 61.5%LHV when it was introduced in 2011. It is now capable of 62.0% *M501JAC: Similar to the proven M501GAC combustion system, the M501JAC combustor applies air cooled stationary combustor components as an enhancement in order to provide more flexibility, faster start-up, lower emissions and higher efficiency. The M501JAC can achieve a record breaking efficiency, greater than 63% in combined cycle. MHPS’ gas turbines incorporate a number of critical leading-edge technologies. Gas turbines are the core components in Gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants. Gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plants utilise fossil fuels to deliver the cleanest and highest efficiency power generation. GTCCs offer the following advantages: * A high level of thermal efficiency - in comparison with thermal efficiency of about 40% in steam power generation, combined cycle power generation features a thermal efficiency of at least 60% (with both figures on the lower heating value basis). * They are environmentally-friendly: carbon-dioxide (CO2) is released in smaller quantities into the atmosphere. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) are released in smaller quantities into the atmosphere. High temperature wastewater is discharged in smaller quantities into the sea. Combined cycle power generation improves the general
www.gmp.uk.com
GAS TURBINES thermal efficiency of the plant by recovering this high temperature exhaust gas. Many combined cycle power generation plants adopt a waste heat recovery cycle in which exhaust gas from the gas turbine is led to the waste heat recovery boiler to generate steam using recovered heat to drive the steam turbine. Plants employing state-of-the-art gas turbines of Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) have a 20% higher power generation efficiency than conventional coal-fired thermal power generation systems and the world’s highest level of efficiency of more than 64%. This allows an approximate 50% reduction in CO2 emissions. Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems has worked on the development of gas turbines for many years and has integrated the latest aerodynamics, cooling design and material technologies to create a variety of products that realise high efficiency and reliability. According to the company, its state-of-the-art J-series gas turbines lead the world in capacity and efficiency, with an inlet temperature capacity of 1,600℃. A spokesman for the company commented: “In 1984, we delivered a combined cycle power plant to the Higashi-Niigata Thermal Power Station of Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. and this achieved a revolutionary thermal efficiency over 44%, then the world’ s highest. It attained far greater energy efficiency than conventional thermal power plants. “In 1999, a combined cycle power plant incorporating the G-series gas turbine was constructed and delivered for the No. 4 Series for the same power station. The thermal efficiency of the plant exceeded 50%. In 2018, the combined cycle power plant with the J-series gas turbine reached a cumulative total operation time of 600,000 hours as a commercial system. A cumulative total operation time of more than 600,000 hours is a yardstick for the reliability of gas turbines in the power generation industry. He concludes: “As Japan’ s one and only manufacturer engaging in design, manufacturing, civil engineering, installation, commissioning and after-sales services with its own technologies, we proudly hold a great track record. “For overseas markets, we have exported the combined cycle power plants to about 20 countries mainly in the Middle East, SouthEast Asia, Europe, North America and South America.” In April 2020 Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. began commissioning T-Point 2, its new combined cycle power plant validation facility at Takasago Works in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan [see pic, top of page]. Replacing the iconic T-Point, the facility will accelerate MHPS’ industry-leading technology and enable more robust validation of advanced-class gas turbines (ACGTs) such as the 1650°C-class JAC model and 1700°C-class ultrahightemperature models. www.mhps.com

RENEWABLE ENERGY STORAGE INSTALLATION COMPLETED AT OUARZAZATE SOLAR COMPLEX, MOROCCO
A
zelio has completed the installation of its renewable energy storage with 24-hour clean power production at Noor Ouarzazate solar complex in Morocco. This latest technology allows the efficient storage of renewable energy from solar and wind power and makes it available all hours of the day as electricity and heat. The installation is one benefit of a joint technical and business development agreement between Azelio and Masen. A verification of the storage will be initiated during the first quarter of 2020, with commercial installations later this year, followed by volume production in 2021. Azelio has developed a solution to efficiently store renewable energy from solar and wind power and make it available all hours of the day as electricity and heat. The system uses recycled aluminum as a storage medium, containing no rare minerals and suffers no reduced capacity over time. The renewable energy system is also scalable from 100 kW to 100 MW and by that fills a void in the market. “Our collaboration with Azelio is a good example of Masen’s R&D strategy to evaluate, co-develop and promote disruptive solutions. MIDDLE EAST POWER
The Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex is a 580MW power plant located 10km north-east of the city of Ouarzazate, Morocco. It is the largest concentrated solar power plant in the world. Phase one of the project has involved the construction of an advanced 160MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant named Noor I, while phase two involved the building of the 200MW Noor II CSP plant and the 150MW Noor III CSP plant. Phase three saw the construction of a 70MW photovoltaic (PV) Noor IV CSP power plant. Phase one construction works began in August 2013 and Noor I was officially commissioned in February 2016. Noor II and Noor III were commissioned in 2018. The plant is able to store solar energy in the form of heated molten salt, allowing for production of electricity into the night. Phase 1offers a full-load molten salt storage capacity of 3 hours. Noor II, and Noor III store energy for up to eight hours. The site currently covers
an area of 2,500 hectares (6,178 acres). The project is being developed with the help of the Spanish consortium TSK-Acciona-Sener. It is the first in a series of planned developments at the Ouarzazate Solar Complex by the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN). Water consumption for the Ouarzazate Noor complex is estimated at 2.5 to 3 million m3 per year for one wet- cooling project (Noor I) and two dry – cooling projects (Noor II and III), due to the need to clean the reflectors regularly. The project was developed on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis by ACWA Power Ouarzazate, a consortium of ACWA Power, the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (Masen), Aries and TSK. The solar complex is currently operated and maintained by a consortium led by NOMAC, a subsidiary of ACWA Power, and Masen. www.azelio.com

NEW GENSETS PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR HOMES AND BUSINESSES IN IRAQ
leading generator company has teamed up with Perkins to bring dependable power to one of the world’s most fragile conflict zones. After decades of upheaval left Iraq with damaged and defunct power plants, much of the country continues to suffer from power shortages. In order to fill them, local authorities and businesses frequently turn to generator manufacturers to provide the support they require. One of the most popular suppliers in this space is Turkish generator set manufacturer Arken Generator. In the past decade, the company has built excellent relationships with local businesses and communities – as well as developing the knowhow to overcome the bureaucratic challenges of doing business there. One of Arken’s latest projects in Iraq saw it successfully install seven ARK-P1100 generator sets, powered by Perkins® 4008-TAG2A engines, to provide round-the-clock standby support for 1,200 homes and businesses. Perkins was the natural choice, with Arken collaborating regularly with the engine manufacturer since it was founded in 2012. The 4008-TAG2A was chosen because of its proven reliability in prime and standby installations across all the key sectors, as well as its compact design. Karan Ohri, Perkins EP marketing manager commented: “The 8 cylinder Perkins® 4008 range provides the versatility customers need in today’s power generation market. This engine has proven reliability in prime and standby installations in all of the key sectors, such as manufacturing facilities, hospitals, and data centres. The 4008 engines have exceptional power-to-weight ratios and compact designs, making them simple to transport and install.
www.gmp.uk.com
“The high performance, versatile engines in our 4008 range are ideal for large scale power generation requirements such as Arken’s installation in Iraq.” He concludes: “ The 4008 range provides 884-1250 kVA generator output and can be supplied with cooling systems for either tropical or temperate environments to meet customer needs, whatever the location. Economical and durable, the engines give excellent power-to-weight ratios, outstanding load acceptance and improved gas emissions.” The introduction of the 1250 kVA node gives a large power increase from an 8 cylinder, 30-litre platform, reducing the customer’s installation and shipping cost. Melis Malki, Arken’s international trade director, said: “We choose Perkins because it produces compact,
yet powerful engines that deliver dependable and cost-effective power for us and our end users.” Arken’s relationship with Perkins has brought many benefits. “Perkins brand awareness, alongside its wide service network, has allowed us to expand our customer base in Iraq and the Middle East and North Africa,” concludes Ms Malki. “The 4008, with its fast and efficient power delivery, has also helped boost our sales in the region.” Arken has capacity to produce 5,000 generators a year – from 5 to 2,500 kVA – from its production facility in Istanbul. It currently exports to more than 75 countries. www.perkins.com https://en-nlengineering.com/ arken-jenerator/

ertiv, a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has launched Vertiv Liebert OFC, a range of oil-free turbocor compressor chillers, in partnership with Geoclima. The family of air-cooled and water-cooled chillers will initially be available in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). The exclusive technology partnership with Geoclima, a company specialising in innovative cooling systems with low environmental impact, enables Vertiv to build on existing world-class chiller technology and a well-established track record around the globe. The Liebert OFC design has been optimised to utilise low GWP refrigerants including R1234ze and to provide high energy efficiency. Other refrigerants including R513A and R134a are also available in the range. Kevin Brady, vice-president and general manager of Thermal Management for Vertiv in Europe, Middle East and Africa, commented: “The introduction of the Liebert OFC range will provide our Data Centre customers with the complete array of chiller offerings: scroll, fixed screw, inverter screw and turbocor, enabling them to meet their efficiency targets and stay ahead of regulations.” Paolo Ferraris, president of Geoclima, said: “I am sure that the mix of Geoclima’s innovative product range together with Vertiv’s state-of-the-art laboratories and deep knowledge of centre applications make this technology partnership a sure success for both our companies.” The comprehensive Liebert OFC range will include water-cooled models from 300 kW to 1600 kW and air-cooled models from 300 kW to 1700 kW, which are also available with free-cooling and adiabatic configurations.
New and existing customers from all over the world can thoroughly test Vertiv’s complete portfolio of thermal management products under real field conditions at the state-of-the-art Customer Experience Centre in Tognana, Italy which boasts six laboratories, including the Chiller Test Laboratory with its 1.6MW capacity, providing the ability to test and validate performance with varying chilled water temperatures and simulate ambient conditions ranging from -10° C to +55° C, a world-class indirect evaporative cooling test chamber to ensure validation of customers specified operating condition together with multiple air conditioning unit laboratories. As part of Vertiv’s innovation roadmap, the company recently redesigned the entire floor-mount air conditioning range, including the direct expansion Vertiv Liebert PDX with variable speed compressors and the chilled water range with the newly redesigned Vertiv Liebert PCW. Several global players are currently establishing data centres in the Middle East. Germany’s SAP is the front-runner in the region with three centres,
in Dubai, Riyadh and Dammam, which house servers for local cloud computing clients. Microsoft recently opened its first two data centres in the UAE. Comparatively a smaller player, Alibaba Cloud - the cloud computing arm of the Chinese e-commerce giant - opened its first regional data centre in Dubai in 2016. Still, in the cloud market, AWS - a subsidiary of online retail giant Amazon – is the dominant player, maintaining a market share lead over its rivals. By the end of 2020 the public cloud services market in the Middle East and North Africa is projected to grow to $1.9 billion (Dh7.97bn) , double its value in 2016, according to market analysts Statista. www.vertiv.com

GENSETS
MAY 2020
GENSETS DEPLOYED AT THE AL RAYYAN STADIUM, QATAR
A
pectacular new stadium has arisen on the site of the old Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan. It will be a truly memorable venue, The stadium is more than 90% complete, with the stands in place and roof stabilisation finished. The seats are now being installed and its distinctive façade, which weaves together symbols representing Qatar, is now in place. Work has also begun on completing the pitch area but this has been temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 emergency. Over two year’s from the world’s largest football event - the 2022 World Cup in Qatar - organised by FIFA (The International Federation of Association Football) will begin here on November 21st, 2022. Qatar has less than three years to ensure that all the stadiums and associated infrastructure are ready for this major event. Altogether, there will be 12 stadiums hosting the World Cup. Some are already finished, but others are still under construction. More than 26,000 people are directly involved in the construction of the proposed stadiums. One facility still be completed is the Al Rayyan Stadium - this is scheduled to be ready by the end of 2020. In order to achieve this tight deadline, the contractors rely on a uninterrupted power supply provided by four INMESOL gensets. The company has supplied and installed three model IV700 generators and one model IV440. The four gensets currently providing power are the IV-700 and model IV-400 types - each of them powered by a VOLVO engine and DEEP SEA 8610 controller. The INMESOL gensets currently work for 24-hours in parallel.

The genset control units feature different programming options so that their functions can be adapted to meet power demands, and are synchronised together thanks to a DSE8610 controller. Although this project is an international endeavour, one crucial element of the stadium – its 40,000 seats – will be produced by local company Coastal Qatar. This boost to Qatar’s economy is just one small part of the long-term legacy being created here. The Al Rayyan Stadium has a capacity for 40,000 spectators. After the World Cup, nearly half of the installed seats will be removed. The new stadium even features a facade which incorporates symbols of Qatari culture and has been inspired by the sand dunes of the nearby desert, says its architects. During the World Cup, the
stadium is eligible to host matches up to the quarter-final. More than 26,000 people are directly involved in the construction of the proposed stadiums throughout Qatar.. The Al Rayyan Stadium is located just outside the city limits, north-west of Doha on the edge of the desert, at roughly 20 kilometres from central Doha. The stadium will form part of a development which includes the newly opened Mall of Qatar, the country’s largest shopping mall. The stadium will be connected to the city with a currently under construction new Metro line. The Gulf nation will become the first from the Arab world to host a football World Cup, breaking with tradition with a winter kick-off as it looks to avoid the scorching summer heat. www.inmesol.com

THE BIRTHPLACE OF INNOVATION IS IMAGINATION.
Our planet is changing. We are aware of the impact we have and the decisions we make which affect the world we hand over to our children and future generations. We need to show our commitment to true innovation for a better world, by not always putting profit first. Imagination is one of the greatest assets we have and, when we lead with it, we can solve problems which seem too great to overcome. Imagination is a force for good that should drive our direction in finding every possible way to reduce our consumption and impact. Innovation isn’t about being the best. It’s about us being better.
