The market for a smart grid network in Saudi Arabia is expected to grow at CAGR of more than 3% between now and 2025, says a report by market researchers, Mordor Intelligence. For an expanding nation like Saudi Arabia growing renewable energy and the need to modify existing grid networks to meet the growing power demand means that the market for the smart grid is expected to witness considerable growth. As a corollary this will improve issues like the collection of revenue for electricity and address electricity theft in low-income areas. However, developing a smart grid with the pace with which Saudi Arabia is working on its renewable resources and the initial large investment for the modification of the grid could be a restraining factor for the market in the coming years. Advanced Metering Structure is expected to drive the Saudi smart grid network significantly, providing monitoring of bi-directional flow of electricity, owing to increasing grid IT WILL BE THE FIRST development. INTERCONNECTION Saudi Arabia plans to deploy 40 GW of solar power capacity and ALLOWING THE 20 GW of wind and other sources by 2030, which will create further EXCHANGE OF ELECTRIC opportunities for smart grid players in the upcoming period. POWER BETWEEN SAUDI South Saudi Arabia is aiming to ARABIA AND EGYPT.” develop and renovate its ageing grid infrastructure. To meet the electricity demand the South Saudi Arabian National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) last updated the South Saudi Arabian Smart Grid Initiative in 2017. Only last year a consortium led by Hitachi ABB Power Grids won a contract for the first HVDC interconnection in the Middle East and North Africa, enabling Saudi Arabia and Egypt to exchange up to 3 gigawatts of electricity. More is expected to be generated from renewable energy sources in the future. The contract is worth several hundreds of millions of dollars, awarded from the Saudi Electricity Company and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The connection will support the flow of power in multiple directions between three terminals and will be the first interconnection allowing the exchange of electric power between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Hitachi ABB will be delivering advanced technologies for the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power link between the countries. This includes the supply of three HVDC converter stations located at Medina and Tabuk in KSA, and Badr in Egypt. The business will also be providing transformers, valves and high-voltage equipment.

$8.5 MILLION POWER TRANSFORMERS CONTRACT WITH OMAN Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co.has exported ultrahigh-voltage power transformers to Oman Electricity Transmission Co. in a deal valued at US$8.5 million. The sales deal with Oman’s state utility provider includes three 400-kilovolt/500-megavolt ampere power transformers to be installed in a new substation north of Oman, said Hyundai Electric, an affiliate of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group,.The deal made last year boosted Hyundai Electric’s power transformer sales in the Middle Eastern region to $172 million for 2021. In the second half of 2021, Hyundai Electric won 20 such supply contracts, including the $29.4 million deal clinched with Saudi Arabia in September 2021. Ultra-high-voltage electricity transmission (UHV electricity transmission) has been used isince 2009 to transmit both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electricity over long distances separating energy resources and consumers. Up to voltage 500 kV, typically only a single unit of the high voltage transformer is used. Past 500 kV, it is no longer economical to use a single transformer (the size is much too big). In these situations where more than 500 kV is required, two units are cascaded in series to produce the required voltage. These products are supplied to large-scale power plants, public construction and technology factories, and play a key role in transmission & distribution systems.

WASTE-TO-ENERGY

MAY 2022

BUILDING WORKS COMPLETED ON SHARJAH’S FIRST WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANT

T

he Sharjah Waste to Energy plant is the first project of Emirates Waste to Energy, a joint venture established by BEEAH Energy, the renewable energy business of BEEAH Group, and Masdar, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies. Masdar, in partnership with Bee’ah, the Middle East’s leading and award-winning environmental management company, is developing a cutting-edge waste-to-energy plant in the emirate of Sharjah. Diverting more than 300,000 tonnes of solid municipal waste from landfill each year, it will contribute to the UAE’s goal to divert 75 percent of solid waste from landfills. The facility will process more than 37.5 tonnes per hour of municipal solid waste to generate electric power and will be located adjacent to Bee’ah’s existing Material Recovery Facility in Sharjah, where the emirate’s waste is collected, sorted, recycled and, where necessary, sent to landfills. The waste-to-energy process converts the waste into produced heat which is then used to drive an electrical turbine. The net electrical power produced will be up to 30 MW which will be supplied directly to the Sharjah electricity grid. The flue gas of the waste processing will be environmentally treated before being released into the atmosphere. The partnership between Bee’ah and Masdar was officially announced during ADSW 2017 with signature of the Joint Development Agreement. Bee’ah, headquartered in the Emirate of Sharjah, is an integrated environmental and waste management company, founded in 2007, through an Emiri decree by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the Sharjah City Municipality. Bee’ah collects approximately 2.3 million tonnes of waste from nearly one million households in Sharjah each year, diverting around 70 percent of its collected waste from landfill to its recycling waste management facilities. Pre-feasibility studies of the project were completed in 2016, while the Emirates Waste to Energy joint venture between Bee’ah and Masdar was established to develop the project in May 2017. Bee’ah is an integrated environmental and waste management company, which was established as a public private partnership (PPP) with the Sharjah City Municipality in 2007. It collects and processes approximately 2.3 million tonnes (Mt) of waste a year

from one million Sharjah households. Masdar is a renewable energy comapny, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-owned Mubadala Investment Company. The plant will help achieve Sharjah’s zero waste-to-landfill target as well as the UAE’s goal of diverting 75% of solid waste from landfills by 2022. The Sharjah waste-to-energy project is being developed within the Bee’ah’s waste management centre (WMC) in Al Saj’ah. The plant will be deployed with the CNIM/Martin reverse acting grate for the combustion process. The bars of the reverse acting grate move in the opposite direction to the downward gravitational pull of the solid waste, which allows homogenous air distribution during combustion. Waste products will be incinerated to produce heat up to 1,200°C, which will be recovered using an integrated heat recovery boiler. The steam produced by the boiler will be used to drive a steam turbine to generate electricity. Flue gas generated in the process will be treated before being released into the atmosphere. The plant’s emissions levels will comply with the European Union’s (EU) environmental standards. Support infrastructure facilities of the plant include air and water supply systems and an ash handling facility. The electricity generated by the plant will be sold to Sharjah Electricity

and Water Authority (SEWA) under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) signed in May 2017. A 20-year term loan of £127m ($162m) from a consortium of lenders including Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Siemens Financial Services, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Standard Chartered Bank was secured for the project in October 2018. The project won the Thomson Reuters Project Finance International (PFI) Award for Clean Deal of the Year 2018 for the Middle East and Africa region. Bee’ah’s waste management centre at Al Saj’ah collects segregates, and recycles approximately 2.3Mt of municipal waste a year. It already houses a 35MW gasification plant capable of processing approximately 160,000t of non-recyclable solid waste a year. Featured at the site is a material recovery facility (MRF), which was retrofitted with advanced recycling technology in 2018 to become one of the world’s biggest producers of recovered plastics. The design, build, and operate (DBO) contract for the Sharjah waste-to-energy plant was finalised with CNIM in January 2018. Ramboll was appointed as the advisor for the planning and implementation of the project. www.beeahgroup.com

Using Ducab HV cables, SEWA’s latest circuit strengthens its existing network, allowing for future development of power supply to Rahmaniyah, Sharjah Airport Free Zone, and University City. The project uses more than 160km of 132kV cables, which were supplied and installed by Ducab HV. Abdulla Ali, installations manager at Ducab HV, said: “This was our largest project to date, and we are exceptionally proud of our work with SEWA. “Being a local company enabled us to be agile enough to deliver to their requirements in a short time, thereby providing SEWA with the opportunity to complete

this landmark project in a quick and efficient manner. Ducab HV would like to congratulate SEWA on the successful conclusion of this project.” May Al leem, PPD director at SEWA, said: “Ducab HV was able to provide us with cabling for our new circuit in a timely and cost-effective manner. “Our experience in this collaboration was positive from start to finish, demonstrating the very real benefits of using local suppliers as opposed to importing materials. “With the new cabling in place, we are now able to better meet the growing energy demands of Sharjah City, with the potential to expand as needed.” In 2022 52 km and 120 km of MV and LV cable – DEWA & BS - was delivered to the US$850 million container terminal at Jebel Ali Port. This is one of the most advanced marine terminals in the world, with a quay length of 1,860 metres, a 70-hectare storage yard, and a draft of 17 metres. The Ducab group has signed a 288 km power line construction contract as part of a project implemented by GE’s network solutions unit for renewable energy solutions in iraq. The cables will be used in the

construction of power transmission lines extending to 288 km from the upper lines. The project is in line with wide-ranging plans to develop iraq’s electricity sector and upgrade the country’s position as a regional energy hub by constructing smart and sustainable electricity transmission networks. The project will help provide reliable and sophisticated sources of electricity, thereby supporting many other sectors in line with the overall iraqi economic development strategy, The World Bank expecting the iraqi economy to register a growth rate of 6.3% over the next two years, thanks in part to the electrification proiject. Ducab participated in GE’s tender for renewable energy solutions for design, supply, installation and testing services for 400 kv connection lines for power transmission lines between the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan and the Al-qaim region of iraq. . This has been accompanied through the reintroducation of a programme dedicated to engineering, procurement and construction, and the supply of equipment, products and solutions for substation projects and power transmission lines (400 kv/132 kv). www.ducab.com
