LEBANON LEFT WITH CHRONICALLY REDUCED ELECTRICAL POWER GRID FOLLOWING ECONOMIC COLLAPSE Lebanon has been left without electricity, plunging the country into darkness amid a severe economic crisis, say reports from the region. The country’s two largest power stations, Deir Ammar and Zahrani, have been operating intermittently because of fuel shortages. For the past 18 months Lebanon has endured an economic crisis and extreme fuel shortages. That crisis has left half its population in poverty, crippled its currency and sparked major demonstrations against politicians. A lack of foreign currency meanwhile has made it hard to pay overseas energy suppliers. Many Lebanese people already depend on private diesel-powered generators for power. These however have become increasingly expensive to run amid the lack of fuel, and cannot cover for the lack of a nationwide power grid. Last month Lebanon’s state electricity company confirmed the October shutdown of the two power plants, which together provide some 40% of the country’s electricity. Their closure led to the “complete outage of the power network with no possibility of resuming operations in the meantime. The media has been reporting that Hezbollah has brought Iranian fuel into the country to ease shortages. Its opponents say the group is using the fuel delivery to expand its influence. A lack of foreign currency has made it impossible for the authorities to pay overseas energy suppliers.to provide energy for the domestic supply across Lebanon.

1.21MW TESLA BATTERY SYSTEM FOR THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR FARM IN SAUDI ARABIA Tesla has provided a 1.21MW / 8.61MWh Powerpack BESS product for Dubai, UAE. A Tesla battery energy storage system (BESS) pilot project has gone into service at what is currently the world’s biggest single-site solar PV plant, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has inaugurated the project at its solar farm 50km south of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, it said on Sunday 26 September. The ambitious Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has already reached 1GW of solar generation capacity installed and with ongoing capacity expansions taking place could become five times that size by 2030. The pilot project utilises 1.21MW / 8.61MWh of Tesla’s Powerpack BESS product. Powerpack is the US company’s BESS aimed at the commercial, industrial and light utility-scale markets, and sits in-between the residential Powerwall and utility-scale Megapack. Dubai has a strategy in place for providing 75% of power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050 as well as making the UAE city a “global hub for clean energy and a green economy,” DEWA managing director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said. Powerwall and Powerpack are the two major battery storage products made by Tesla. Both systems are based on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Powerpack aims at commercial and industrial applications while Powerwall can be integrated with solar energy for residential use. The Powerpack-driven BESS at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the second-largest energy storage solution at the facility. The largest is a sodium sulphur (NAS) batteries-backed system from Japan’s NGK. Both energy storage systems at the solar park support bi-directional flow of electricity both to and from the grid, so energy can be stored from generated solar power and from the grid.Planned expansions at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will increase its generation capacity by up to five times what it is now by 2030. If all goes well with this pilot project, the facility could add a

Gulf countries have seen rapid economic growth and have become major energy consumers in their own right, says a report by IRENA. Regional electricity consumption is growing at almost 8% a year — meaning generating capacity has to be doubled every decade. Gulf countries will require 100 GW of additional power over the next 10 years to meet demand. Electricity produced from renewables means less oil and gas has to be consumed domestically, freeing them for export. Six GCC countries are in the top 14 per capita emitters of carbon-dioxide in the world; renewables offer a financially viable way to change that. There is also growing pressure to protect the Gulf’s fragile environment. A spokesman from IRENA comments: “Improving technology and growing competition have seen the cost of renewable energy drop dramatically. In some parts of the world, especially when compared

to diesel generation, it is already the cheapest option. Furthermore, solar power generation fits very well with demand patterns where air conditioning dominates the electricity demand curve particularly in GCC countries. * Kuwait has more than 70 MW of renewable capacity planned: solar photovoltaic (10 MW), concentrating solar power (50 MW), wind (10 MW). * In the United Arab Emirates - Dubai want to obtain 5% of final energy from renewables by 2030; Abu Dhabi wants 7% of capacity from renewables by 2020; * Saudi Arabia plans to source around 54 GW of renewable capacity by 2032 at least. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

UAE BUILDING GULF’S FIRST WASTETO-POWER PLANT FOR ELECTRICITY The UAE, one of the world’s top oil exporters, is building the Gulf region’s first waste-to-power plants to ease its chronic waste disposal problem and, at the same time, its reliance on gas-fuelled electricity stations. Engineer Nouf Wazir, from waste management company Bee’ah, said the power plant is a way to make use of refuse that cannot be recycled. “Not everyone knows that waste has value,” comments Wazir, a senior engineer on the project. The Sharjah facility is expected to launch this year, burning more than 300,000 tons of waste per year to power up to 28,000 homes. In Dubai, another plant is being developed at a cost of $1.2 billion, according to Hitachi Zosen Inova, one of the partner companies. When completed in 2024, the Dubai plant will be one of the largest in the world, capable of burning up 1.9 million tons of waste per year - about 45 percent of the household waste currently produced in the emirate. 8

he Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) has supplied a 3MW diesel generator (900RPM operating at 4160 Volts) to Saudi Arabia. Designed, engineered, installed and commissioned by ABC the 3MW genset was ordered by the Saudi Electricity Company as a black start unit for a 210 MW standby power plant which runs on GE turbines. For 100 years Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC), with headquarters and production facility in Ghent, Belgium, has supplieed power solutions for electricity production. ABC’s reliable, medium speed engines, in combination with an alternator, ensure that we can offer powerful solutions to those looking for a reliable source of energy. Generator sets based on ABC engines are widely used in (hybrid) power plants, industrial groups and emergency gensets. Saudi Arabia’s utility industry faces many challenges including increasing energy demands, an ageing infrastructure, changing regulations, off-grid shortages, reduced water levels, the digital revolution, competition from other suppliers. The Saudi Electricity Company must supply its customer base with reliable and cost-effective power. For stable power generation and distribution, privately or publicly owned utility companies need to work with expert partners. ABC supplies power solutions for power generation. Its medium speed engines, in combination with an alternator, offer powerful yet economical power generation solutions to those looking for a reliable source of energy. Generator sets based on ABC engines are widely used today in thermal power plants. Combined with renewable energy solutions, ABC has grown substantially in the hybrid power market, reducing fuel bills and carbon footprint for its customers. A company spokesman commented: “The reliability of ABC engines is legendary. The medium speed - up to 1000 rpm - and cleverly engineered distribution of loads ensure a low mechanical wear and therefore a long life of the engines and components, extending the periods between overhauling and ensuring long periods of continuous operation. Because in many settings renewables only don’t provide enough stable power, our engines remain a key element of the solution. “The total cost of ownership (TCO) of medium speed engines easily outperforms high speed engines. This

is due to the low fuel and lube oil consumption, the lower frequency of maintenance interventions and the general robustness of the medium speed engine. This results in much lower operating costs.” ABC’s in-house engineering support department offers a vast range of cost-effective and customised solutions for organisations seeking to achieve competitive excellence. The company can provide turnkey, hybrid or conventional, power solutions from tank to grid including lines and subcontractors. It has been involved with greenfield projects around the world and maintains many independent power producers (IPP) and non-utility generator (NUG) clients seeking to produce power for resale at the lowest cost per kWh. The Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) is an open source manufacturer of medium speed engines with various energy outputs, operates a state-ofthe-art production facility in Belgium. Its reliable engines, in combination with an alternator, are said to offer powerful yet economical power generation solutions.
The company’s characteristic medium speed engine (up to 1000 rpm) and carefully-engineered distribution of loads ensure a low mechanical deterioration and therefore guarantees a long engine life and for its components too, says the company. The spokesman concluded: “Our engines are 100% mechanical, making them easier to maintain and more reliable. We call this “SMART”: Simple, Mechanical, Affordable, Reliable and Tailormade according to a client’s requirements. “The total cost of ownership and uptime of medium speed engines easily outperforms high speed engines on the long run. This is due to the low fuel and lube oil consumption, the lower frequency of maintenance interventions and general robustness of the medium speed engine. Your benefit is a much lower operating and life-cycle cost. ABC containerized solutions are designed according to the needs of each project, including the necessary scope of supply and tailored to the environmental requirements. www.abc-engines.com

TWO CHP PLANTS FOR MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE GROUP HOSPITALS
O
ver the past decade, the Turkish healthcare infrastructure has been continually expanded with new hospitals. Healthcare services are to be improved continually in order to enable the best possible patient care and health support. To cover the growing demand for energy, the Turkish MWM service and sales distributor İltekno İleri Teknoloji Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş. has installed and commissioned two combined heat and power plants for two hospitals of the Memorial Healthcare Group. One of the plants is equipped with an MWM TCG 3016 V16 gas generator set, and the other with an MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas generator set. Certification Confirms High Environmental Compatibility The MWM TCG 3016 V16 generator set with an output of 800 kWel was commissioned in the Ankara Çankaya Hospital. The generator set with an output of 1,000 kWel was installed on the roof of the Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital. The Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital is one of the few hospitals worldwide that has been awarded LEED certification, a system of the United States Green Building Council for the rating of green buildings. The certification was granted in view of the high energy efficiency that is ensured and perpetuated by the installed combined heat and power plant with a powerful MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas generator set. The CHP plant at Memorial Bahçelievler Istanbul was installed on the roof, which posed a major challenge in terms of installation, design and safety. Vibration and sound levels played an important role in selecting a supplier for the project. Thanks to an insulated container, very low sound levels of 65 dB are achieved at a distance of 10 metres.
12
MIDDLE EAST POWER
The installation of the CHP plant for the Memorial Bahçelievler Hospital was performed by İltekno within only 36 hours. As the hospital is located on one of Istanbul’s arterial roads, the project had to be planned well. Thanks to the quick and efficient work of the service team, the installation was completed in only one and a half days instead of the usual 4–5 days. Thanks to the two gas generator set-driven CHP plants at the two hospitals, the Memorial Healthcare Group saves about €400,000 a year in power and heating costs. Additionally, due to the high efficiency of the MWM gas generator sets, carbon emissions are expected to be about 20 percent lower. The well-being of hospital patients greatly depends on uninterrupted power supply and reliable emergency power supply. To cope with the growing number of patients despite limited capacities and rising fixed costs, hospitals are forced to save expenses by increasing the efficiency in certain areas, e.g. in the field of energy management, which comprises the general power demand as well as a building’s heating and air-conditioning. An analysis of energy-related weaknesses can help reduce energy costs by up to 30 or 40 percent. Once the weaknesses that are not related to cogeneration have been analyzed and eliminated, the facility can
start planning the rollout of an internal cogeneration power plant. The use of cogeneration with natural gas optimizes the energy supply and reduces emissions, thereby providing environmental benefits. Generator sets of the TCG 3016 series feature a unique combination of efficiency and robustness. One of the key benefits is their remarkable efficiency, which is unmatched in their class. In natural gas operation, for example, the electrical efficiency reaches up to 43.5 percent. In the cogeneration of power and heat an overall efficiency of up to 90 percent can be achieved. Moreover, a low oil consumption of less than 0.1 g/kWhel and long oil change intervals make the operation of the gas gensets more economical. The operating period until the general overhaul is 80,000 operating hours for natural gas applications. The MWM TCG 3020, successor model of the TCG 2020, generator set effectively balances efficiency and reliability. The genset delivers up to 18 percent more output than its predecessor, though its dimensions are almost the same. Additionally, the new model features long service intervals with up to 80,000 operating hours until the next general overhaul (if the gas quality is high) and a total efficiency of more than 87 percent (with natural gas). www.mwm.net

527 KWE COGEN SYSTEM FOR THE SOUSSE PLANT, TUNISIA
I
nnio has provided a 527 kWe biogas cogeneration system for Sousse, Tunisia - it will provide a CHP plant for a wastewater treatment facility. Cogeneration or CHP (Combined Heat and Power) solutions from INNIO are designed to generate both heat and power increasing overall power plant efficiency up to 90% and even more. The basic structure of INNIO’s Jenbacher CHP systems includes a gas engine/gas generator unit and heat exchangers which use waste heat. A wide range of heat sources- from gas engine cooling water and oil to an air/fuel gas mixture and exhaust gas - is configured to give each individual customer the greatest possible benefit. Innio cogeneration plant solutions has a reputation for delivering flexible power generation and a high degree of reliability and availability. Built by a Chinese hydroelectric engineering and construction company at a total cost of 61 million dinars (US$25 million), the Sousse wastewater treatment project, is located on the east coast of Tunisia, particularly benefits the agricultural sector since the treated water is being used to irrigate crops.

MIDDLE EAST POWER
“This purification factory treats 60% percent of the drinking water and industrial water in Sousse,” comments Hu Pingjun, manager of the Sousse wastewater treatment project. “With its global investment potential, China will be able to play a great role in the recovery of the Tunisian economy, particularly in certain sectors including major infrastructure projects, urban sanitation and waste water,” said Riadh Mouakhar, Tunisian minister of local affairs and the environment.” He comments: “This new wastewater treatment plant has alrerady had a major impact on the beautification and the improvement of the entire province of Sousse in light of many assets, including water recycled for the agriculture sector.” In addition, the Tunisian minister added, “this project is distinguished by the fact that it will also favour the production of electricity by cogeneration, which will reduce the operating cost, essentially based on energy.” Tunisia has limited water reserves, estimated at 4.880 billion cubic metres per year. Of these reserves,
around 4.660 billion cubic metres can be potentially used. Approximately 56 percent of the water deposits consist of surface waters and are therefore dependent on the rainfall. Tunisia is one of the most arid countries in the world and water reserves vary greatly across its regions. Over 80 percent igoes to the agricultural sector, while around 14 percent is needed as drinking water. UNESCO is predicting serious problems with water supply for Tunisia from 2025 onwards. Of the 113 sewage treatment plants in Tunisian only a small number are equipped with an additional third cleaning stage – only two are currently in use. By providing a cogeneration plant for the Sousse wastewater project Innio makes an important contribution to the reduction of the operator energy costs in the region. The biogasfuelled cogeneration equipment also provides a significant and quantifiable reduction in carbon emissions. www.innio.com
