A new multi-billion dollar project to upgrade Abu Dhabi’s national grid will reduce the oil nation’s carbon footprint by up to 30% while also providing power for Adnoc’s offshore production operations. The state oil company Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) have received proposals from firmsfor a planned high-voltage subsea transmission project to connect Adnoc’s offshore oil and gas production facilities to ADPower’s onshore national electricity grid. Despite the problems caused by the Covid-19 emergency, in April 2020 Adnoc and ADPower managed to launch a joint tender for the high-voltage sub-sea transmission project, said to be the first project of its kind in “THE USE OF POWER the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region. GENERATED ONSHORE Around six proposals were submitted for the scheme by State IS EXPECTED TO REDUCE Grid China, Southern Power Grid, Terna (Italy), Kepco (South Korea), ADNOC’S OFFSHORE Elia Grid (Belgium/Germany) and CARBON FOOTPRINT Kansai Electric (Japan). “This project will meet our future BY UP TO 30%.” offshore power needs, even as our fields mature, using diverse and sustainable sources,” commented Yaser Saeed Al-Mazrouei, Adnoc Upstream executive director. “It will enable Adnoc to utilise the natural gas currently used to power our offshore facilities for higher-value purposes.” The project will be developed by a special purpose vehicle (SPV) – in which the successful developers from the tender will hold a 40% per stake, with Adnoc and ADPower to each maintain a 30% holding. The scheme will be developed under a build-own-operate and transfer (BOOT) model, with ownership of the project to be transferred back to Adnoc at the end of the concession agreement. Work on the project is due to begin in 2025. Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven emirates, holds total proven reserves of 92.2 billion barrels of oil, making it among the top-10 nations by reserves size. The latest technical reports suggest that Abu Dhabi’s energy reserves of oil will last for 150 years. According to the current IMF estimates, the UAE produced 2.62 million barrels of crude oil per day on average in recent years, 97% of hich was produced in Abu Dhabi.

NEW COOLING TECHNOLOGY FOR ELECTRONICS & DATA CENTRES IN THE MIDDLE EAST FROM HONEYWELL A breakthrough approach involving liquid heat transfer agents with an aim to cool high-performance electronics more efficiently and effectively than traditional methods that use air and water has been announced by Honeywell. These new heat transfer agents are said to lower operational costs for applications such as data centres that use high-performance servers. Honeywell’s Solstice E-Cooling uses a two-phase liquid cooling process to remove heat from electronic applications while reducing environmental impact. The technology is available now and being previewed at the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Expo (AHR) in Orlando, Fla. The launch is in line with Honeywell’s aim to develop solutions that help meet the global demand for more data and processing, said Chris LaPietra, vice-president and general manager, Honeywell Stationary Refrigerants. “With Solstice E-Cooling, data centres and other high-performance electronics can increase efficiency while lowering costs and their carbon footprint.” Data centres currently use about three per cent of the world’s electricity, and that number is expected to rise to eight per cent by 2030, according to research by Global Markets Insights (GMI). With cooling systems accounting for approximately 40 per cent of total energy consumption, the need for intelligent and energy-efficient solutions is expected to drive data centre cooling market growth. The two-phase Solstice E-Cooling process allows for more energy-efficient and uniform cooling, better heat rejection, and reduced pumping power than single-phase liquid cooling, where fluid remains in its liquid form throughout the cooling process. Solstice E-Cooling is also a dielectric solution, serving as an electrical insulator for equipment to prevent damage from contact with fluids.
DUBAI’S CLEAN ENERGY STRATEGY IS FULLY SUPPORTED BY SHARAF DG ENERGY Sharaf DG Energy has launched a range of sustainable development initiatives for residents in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, says the company in a recent announcement. Dubai is currently focussing on on creating an environment-friendly energy mix, progressively growing the employment of clean energy sources to 75 per cent by 2050. This implies that the share of natural gas, currently powering the city of Dubai, will gradually decrease to 61 per cent, as clean energy sources will enter the mix, making up the remaining 39 per cent of the energy supply. Out of all the clean energy sources available, solar energy is set to become the largest contributor. The Dubai government recognises that solar energy offers the most viable and competitive solution to meet the domestic
energy requirements. To complement the clean energy strategy, DEWA is encouraging every resident to install solar panels onto their rooftops, enjoying the benefits of energy savings offered by the Shams Dubai, a net-metering scheme for solar PV systems. Any surplus electricity produced is sold back to DEWA at the same price, which allows residents to roll over their kilowatt hours to the next month to off-set future electricity consumption. In line with Dubai’s vision of becoming the greenest city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world, Sharaf DG Energy is urging villa owners to consider installing solar PV panels on their rooftops and produce their own clean electricity independently. By going solar, Dubai residents will play a central role in reaching the city’s clean energy goals.

THE BIRTHPLACE OF INNOVATION IS IMAGINATION.
Our planet is changing. We are aware of the impact we have and the decisions we make which affect the world we hand over to our children and future generations. We need to show our commitment to true innovation for a better world, by not always putting profit first. Imagination is one of the greatest assets we have and, when we lead with it, we can solve problems which seem too great to overcome. Imagination is a force for good that should drive our direction in finding every possible way to reduce our consumption and impact. Innovation isn’t about being the best. It’s about us being better.

T
MULTI-PIPE UNIT FOR EFFICIENT, SUSTAINABLE, AND SIMULTANEOUS COOLING AND HEATING
rane®, a leading global provider of indoor comfort solutions and services and a brand of Trane Technologies, has released the Sintesis™ Balance CMAF, the latest addition to its innovative portfolio of multi-pipe units for simultaneous cooling and heating. The fourth generation of Trane’s air-sourced multipipe units raises the bar in sustainable, efficient and flexible delivery of cooling and heating in buildings. Simultaneous heating and cooling by one single unit eliminates the need for separate boiler and chiller systems to fulfil buildings’ cooling needs in the summer, heating in the winter or both throughout the year. This offers building owners of multifunctional facilities like office buildings, hospitals, theatres and hotels reduced investment costs, better use of floor space and lower total operating expenses while significantly improving the sustainability of their operations. The Trane CMAF uses renewable and recovered energy for the production of hot water and can replace the existing fossil-fuel boiler and chiller system to deliver both chilled water and hot water for the entire building with no direct greenhouse gas emissions. This contributes to decarbonisation of buildings and creating better air quality in and around the building, reports the company. The new Sintesis Balance CMAF models are substantially more efficient when compared to oil and gas boilers. CMAF offers Total Efficiency Ratio (TER) of up to 8.2 and Coefficient of Performance (COP) of up to 3,35 – highest levels of all air-sourced scroll multi-pipe units available on the European market. The expanded operating map allows CMAF to deliver hot water with temperatures up to 68°C. The heating capabilities of the unit also makes it a very good choice for building applications in climatic regions where ambient air temperatures go down to minus 18°C.. Jose La Loggia, president of Trane in Europe, Middle East and Africa, comments; “Trane works closely with builders and building owners to create energy efficient and more climate friendly buildings. Today, half of the energy used in buildings is on heating and cooling, and most of the European commercial buildings are heated with gas or oil boilers. “The CMAF is an example of product development that can create a sustainable heating sector, contribute to mitigating climate change and reducing carbon footprint. As new and existing building today will be in use for decades to come, by introducing solutions like the CMAF we clear the pathway to reducing direct use of fossil fuels while also bringing significant savings

SPECIAL PROJECT - GENERATORS GO TO ISLAMABAD
W
ith extra hospitals being built globally to help combat treatment of Corona Virus (COVID-19) patients, the genset manufacturer VISA SPA, established in 1960 and operating in almost 100 counties worldwide, was able to contribute with an exceptional commitment supplying A 1.25 MVA backup power plant. This generator was able to constantly support the exceptional protocols in place and cover all the increased requirements placed on the power supply. The turnkey project, carried out through Visa’s local distributor, consisted of two units x 500 kVA & one unit x 250 kVA - Onis Visa Diesel Generators powered by Volvo Penta Engines. The three gensets were fitted with two STAMFORD HC5 alternators and a STAMFORD UC 27 alternator, chosen for their exceptional efficiency and reliability, the ideal solution for this high level application. The generating sets were purchased to serve the Isolation Hospital and Infectious Treatment Centre (IHITC) in Islamabad, Pakistan. This was built initially to fight against Coronavirus effects and there are plans for it to be later to become a fully-fledged infectious treatment hospital. Given the critical nature of the project, a key performance feature which attracted the customer to the Onis Visa brand was the technical support assured by the local official Distributor. The three gensets played a fundamental role in providing an interrupted power supply to the hospital, ensuring backup power in case of mains failure. Due to non-availability of mains source (i.e. WAPDA in Pakistan) at site, initially the machines were tasked to run 24/7 supplying a mains load to the hospital until the mains source was available. The fast pace of the pandemic – plus VISA’s close relationship with Stamford and combined with Visa’s global presence in the territory, allowed the units to be delivered to the project site in Islamabad within only 10 days. One of the biggest challenges in fact was the time factor. The quick delivery however, did not compromise product performance, efficiency and reliability and units were installed according to the customer’s strict schedule, demonstrating the company’s ability to work to stipulated project deadlines, also under the most challenging conditions.

VISA SPA MARKS 60 YEARS IN POWER GENERATION
Visa SpA has always been present in Middle East where it fulfils even the most complex projects combining its global experience with engineering expertise to provide power solutions and complete customer support. This year Visa SpA celebrates its 60th anniversary. It was 1960, when the founder Benvenuto Barro recognised the energy needs of a fast-developing Italy, sensing that the increasing energy demands in certain sectors could be met with generating sets, he had a clear idea in his mind: to develop - with passion products which were reliable and easy to use. Another priority was honouring requests with the utmost punctuality and seeking the total satisfaction of the customers. Since then the company has experienced a continuous growth in terms of sales and revenues, and today it is present in almost 100 countries across five continents as one of the world’s leading genset manufacturer, highly appreciated for its excellent quality. The world has changed a lot since Visa SpA came into being, as well as the market of generators, but the company’s commitment to its mission and its core values still remain the same. www.visa.it

triP vAlve heAlth MoNitoriNG The reliability of shutdown components is of critical importance to ensure equipment, plant, and personnel safety and health. Just as important is how fast these shutdown components function in an emergency situation. In situations where a turbine is operating at its full-load position and receiving 100% input energy, it is imperative when immediate loss-of-load conditions occur that the entire shutdown system responds quickly enough to shut off the input energy source and safely shutdown the turbine.
system including final control elements is fast enough to prevent the prime mover and any of its driven machines from exceeding their maximum allowable speeds.” To enable turbine users and operators to meet this new standard, Woodward’s turbine safety systems encompass functions to measure and record the time it takes to sense a shutdown condition (overspeed or other) to the time it takes for the final element (trip valve) to shut off the input energy source. This response-time-based function records the response of the system on a 1 millisecond basis and issues an alarm if any component of the shutdown circuit takes too long to operate, allowing plant personnel to correct the problem before it is too late.

olvo Penta has launched a new addition to its genset product portfolio, the D8 Stage II and Stage IIIA/Tier 3 engine. The 8-litre power generation engine offers industry-leading power density and a compact size, combined with low fuel consumption and noise levels. Volvo Penta’s new D8 Stage II and IIIA/Tier 3 engine further strengthens the company’s robust range of industrial genset engines. The D8 base engine has been used globally for a wide variety of applications across the Volvo Group. Now, Volvo Penta engineers have perfected the design and optimized the D8 for the power generation segment. “The proven D8 design is based on mature technology concepts that have undergone hundreds of thousands of testing hours and real-world use,” says Kristian Vekas, product manager for generator engines at Volvo Penta. “With the D8, our customers will benefit from 100% proven, reliable components. We have ensured our solution will function with the required performance and reliability levels in all the applications, climates and environments our customers operate in.” Industry-leading power density Both the D8 Stage II and IIIA/Tier 3 engines feature state of the art, high-tech diesel fuel injection and charging systems with low internal losses, contributing to excellent combustion and low fuel consumption. They have been built on the dependable in-line six cylinder design, and have been developed to produce smooth and vibration-free operation with low noise levels. “The new, modern D8 engine has been built with a high power to weight ratio, giving it industry-leading power density and an extremely compact design for its power class,” says Kristian. “It has been designed for quick, easy and economical installation as well as ease of operation and maintenance.” D8 in focus The powerful and economical D8 industrial genset engine will mainly be used as a reliable source of back-up power, as well as cost-effective primary power generation in areas where energy is scarce. It can be used for both mobile and stationary power generation applications, depending on local emission regulations. The Stage II compliant D8 engine (TAD841-843GE) is a dual speed premium diesel engine. Switchable between 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) and 1,800 rpm (60 Hz), it delivers up to 274 kWm at prime power and is also available in three power nodes: 253, 303 and 326 kVA at 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) at prime power.

According to Volvo Penta its engineers have been developing, testing and optimising the new D8 Stage 2 and Stage 3A/U.S. EPA Tier 3 genset engine to ensure it met the requirements for a genset application since 2017. Anders Wernersson, engineering project manager for Medium Duty Engines at Volvo Penta, comments: “Developing a new genset engine is both a big investment and challenge, At Volvo Penta, we focus on what brings value to our customers and put their needs at the heart of our design process. That’s why we started our new 8 L power generation engine project by speaking to our customers and finding out what they wanted to see in a new industrial generator engine.” He explains: “Based on their input, our top priorities were high power density, a compact size, low fuel consumption, low noise levels, ease of installation and reliability. “They told us that they would mainly use the new engine as a reliable source of backup power, as well as cost-effective primary power generation in areas where energy is scarce. “There was also a demand for the engine to be used in both mobile and stationary power generation applications. This gave us some very clear goals and made sure everyone
involved in the project was pulling in the same direction and knew exactly what we needed to accomplish.” He concludes: “As Volvo Penta is part of the Volvo Group, we are in position to have the strength of the group behind us and all the benefits this brings for sharing technologies. This meant that we didn’t need to reinvent the wheel, as we could start our development work with the proven D8 base engine. “The D8 has already been used globally for a wide variety of applications across the Volvo Group. The proven design is based on mature technology concepts that have undergone hundreds of thousands of testing hours and real-world use, so our customers will benefit from proven, reliable components.” www.volvopenta.com

DEVELOPING A GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT IN SAUDI ARABIA
A
ir Products, in conjunction with ACWA Power and NEOM, has signed agreement for a US$5bn green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility in Saudi Arabia. The project, which will be equally owned by the three partners, will be sited in NEOM and will produce green ammonia that Air Products will use to supply carbon-free hydrogen for global markets. The joint venture project is the first partnership for NEOM with leading international and national partners in the renewable energy field and it will be a cornerstone for its strategy to become a major player in the global hydrogen market. It will include the innovative integration of more than four gigawatts of renewable power from solar, wind and storage; production of 650 tonnes per day of hydrogen by electrolysis using thyssenkrupp technology; production of nitrogen by air separation using Air Products technology; and production of 1.2mn tonnes per year of green ammonia using Haldor Topsoe technology. The project is scheduled to be onstream in 2025. “This project will yield a totally clean source of energy on a massive scale and will save the world over three million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and eliminate smog-forming emissions and other pollutants from the equivalent of over 700,000 cars,” Seifi Ghasemi, chairman, president and CEO for Air Products said. “We are confident that our collaboration with an industry-leading company like Air Products will create significant opportunities in the production of green hydrogen, and further us in our goal to help countries meet their clean energy targets and unlock significant socio-economic benefits. “Based in NEOM’s Industrial Cluster, and enabled by its unique mandate, this investment will integrate and localise cutting-edge technologies that will harness solar and wind power to produce sustainable and globally accessible green energy,” noted Mohammad Abunayyan, ACWA Power chairman. Nadhmi Al Nasr, NEOM CEO, commented: “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to developing a carbon positive society which will be a beacon for sustainable living and a solution to many of the environmental challenges facing the world.” Companies around the world currently produce around US$60 billion worth of ammonia every year.

By converting renewable electricity into an energy-rich gas - this can be used in fuel cells, effectively bottling sunshine and wind, turning them into a product which can be shipped anywhere in the world and converted back into electricity or hydrogen gas to power gensets or fuel cell vehicles. In the hydrogen economy, ammonia, the building block of fertilizers and many other chemicals, is one of the real workhorses. Ammonia is made from hydrogen and nitrogen, and it has huge potential as a means to store hydrogen i.e. clean energy. We can say that ammonia is the ‘missing link’ in making decarbonisation a reality. Ammonia is the only carbon-free fuel as its molecule contains only hydrogen and nitrogen (NH3). What is even more fascinating, when used it breaks down to only water and nitrogen. As a fuel, ammonia brings the promise to decarbonise the maritime shipping sector reducing its emissions by 95% by 2035 and the demand could reach about 1 million tons ammonia per day (reference Lloyd’s Register Vessels 2030, how do we get there?). Indeed, with limited modifications and technology improvements, ammonia could be directly used in combustion
engines of deep-sea vessels. The ammonia molecule is also probably one of the best alternatives for the mid/long-term storage of electricity as chemical energy. As such it can be used in buffering a renewables-based electricity system by transforming electricity into hydrogen/ammonia when renewable energy is abundant and cheap and used to produce electricity when needed. Although it might seem a paradox, ammonia is a better hydrogen carrier than hydrogen itself. Storing and transporting hydrogen is a challenge as it is the smallest and lightest molecule in nature and it liquifies only at the extremely low temperature of – 253 degrees Celsius. Ammonia, on the other hand, liquifies at -33 degrees Celsius and can be handled easily, similarly to liquified natural gas. Storing hydrogen under pressure is also possible but again, for the same volume ammonia has a 50% more hydrogen than hydrogen itself. Therefore, when hydrogen is needed, in many applications it makes more economical sense to transform and transport it as ammonia. www.airproducts.com
