The £78m programme – a joint venture between LMPH and Victory Hill – represents a commitment to fund innovative net zero flexible power generation projects in the UK. Under the scope of works, Smith Brothers will provide EPC support in relation to the pair of planned combined heat and power plants, which will bring together highefficiency, gas-fired engine technology with a carbon capture and re-use system – to provide a clean, net-zero, flexible, and dependable electricity solution for the UK. The Yorkshireheadquartered electrical engineering specialist will also act as the Independent Connection Provider (ICP) for the new 10MW, 33kV Western Power Distribution (WPD) loop connection at the Rhodesia site in Nottinghamshire. UKPN DIARY £158 million compensation for cable delays for Western Link
T
he Western Link project, which required an investment of €1,200 million, now enables the transmission of renewable energy from Scotland to homes and businesses located in Wales and England by laying 850 km of high-voltage cable, 770 of which run under the sea. This month, National Grid Electricity Transmission and Scottish Power Transmission agreed to what is effectively a compensation package of £158 million for delays to this Western Link Project, following an investigation by Ofgem, the UK’s energy regulator. NGET and SPT own the licence for the project and contracted to deliver it. The link fell two years behind its expected delivery date of March 2017 to June 2019. Around £15m of the £158m will be paid into Ofgem’s Redress Fund. This is operated on its behalf by the Energy Saving Trust and allows companies to pay a sum of money to appropriate charities, trusts, organisations or consumers as a result of breaches of licence conditions. The remainder of the redress package will be in the form of reduced system charges. These charges are ultimately paid for by consumers as part of their overall electricity bills, so in theory consumers will benefit from this redress package through lower bills. Western Link is a transmission project worth around £1.2 billion, providing a major subsea electricity link between Scotland and Wales. The link is 422 km (262 miles) long, of which 385 km (239 miles) is under the sea, and was designed to transport electricity, often from green sources, between the two countries. It provides an additional 2250 MW of capacity and is crucial to helping Britain reach its targets of net zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, the two-year delay restricted renewable generators in Scotland exporting electricity to England and Wales, because at times there was not enough capacity to do so. This meant that National Grid ESO would have sometimes had to reduce the output from windfarm generators to protect the electricity system. This ultimately led to higher costs for consumers. Ofgem’s investigation found that the root causes of the delay were problems with manufacturing processes, installing the cables and commissioning tests. It acknowledged that NGET and SPT did not cause or exacerbate the delay, but it holds NGET and SPT ultimately responsible, as licence holders, for the delay caused by their supply chain.

NEWS EDF and JPMorgan Chase collaborate in the UK

PMorgan Chase and EDF, Britain’s biggest generator of zero-carbon electricity, have announced a collaboration to help power JPMorgan Chase’s UK offices with 100% renewable electricity in support of its commitment to carbon neutrality in its operations. As part of this effort, JPMorgan Chase’s electricity consumption will be matched to renewable generation on a 24/7 basis. Matching will take place on a half-hourly basis, through source-specific access to EDF’s 8 TWh of Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) portfolio. This bespoke agreement is thought to be a first for UK large business electricity supply. Such innovative structures will enable organisations to take a real-time view of their energy sourcing and associated carbon footprint. EDF will provide JPMorgan Chase with approximately 120,000 MWh of renewable electricity each year to power more than 3 million square feet of offices across the UK, which is the equivalent of powering nearly 33,000 households in the UK. The energy provided to JPMorgan Chase will be monitored utilising ClearTrace’s patented blockchain-based energy-tracking technology to ensure that the electricity consumed is matched digitally, in real-time, to renewable generation. JPMorgan Chase will have an accurate and auditable view of their carbon footprint, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Raghav Singh, Head of Large Business at EDF said: “We are delighted to be working with JPMorgan Chase and supporting them with their sustainability commitments. Thanks to our strength and expertise in renewable PPAs and supply, we have delivered an innovative, tailored solution for JPMorgan Chase. EMEC Hydrogen chooses Genevos to provide new fuel cell power pack
Led by EMEC Hydrogen based in Orkney, HIMET is one of 55 projects selected for funding under the Department for Transport’s flagship Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. The project will explore solutions for decarbonizing ferries as well as poroviding energy for shoreside activities in ports. To decarbonize ferries, various solutions will be designed and demonstrated during this 7-month project including hydrogen storage, the supply of on-board auxiliary power using a hydrogen fuel cell, and also the application of hydrogen in a conventional
ferry propulsion engine.Genevos was chosen by EMEC Hydrogen to supply one of their recentlylaunched Hydrogen Power Modules (HPMs), which will be installed for demonstration purposes on the deck of an Orkney Ferries RoRo ferry, the MV Shapinsay. The HPM was selected primarily due to its ‘plug and play’ marinised concept, integrating both fuel cell systems and power management. Once project demonstration activities are complete, Genevos will support HIMET partners to facilitate uptake across the UK and further afield.
UK electricity demand likely to increase by 71.6 TWh with rise in electric vehicles The latest figures from Cornwall Insight’s ‘Benchmark power curve’ forecast project that by 2040 demand from electric vehicles will contribute an additional 71.6 TWh, 31 times higher than the current level of demand for electricity from electrified transport and 25% of total annual demand currently, which stands at 299 TWh. The latest ‘Benchmark power curve report’ suggests that electrification of the economy (involving electric vehicles and heat pumps) and the use of green hydrogen as an energy carrier will jointly increase demand. This will go from 298 TWh in 2021-22 to 628.4 TWh in the Central Scenario by 2040 and up to 668.2 TWh in the High Scenario. Tom Edwards, senior modeller at Cornwall Insight, reports: “EVs are widely seen as crucial in reducing emissions to meet net zero. However, the magnitude of the impact that the technology will have on the electricity system should not be underestimated. If EVs increase according to the National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios (FES) ‘Leading the Way’ scenario, the increase in demand for electricity will be substantial.”
He concludes: “EVs have the potential to offer the system considerable flexible vehicle-togrid (V2G) discharging and smart charging, which reduces the level of investment needed in flexible power supply. “At the same time, greater flexibility may be needed if consumers were to charge whenever it is convenient, and with the wide deployment of EVs needed to meet net zero it is clear that this would currently not be possible.” Edwards says that electrification of transport remains a significant challenge, particularly if the current market design remains the same. It is likely that the market design will need to change to better support the net zero objectives, he explains.

or UPS installations, correct sizing ensures efficiency in system design and reduces the overall total cost of ownership (TCO) for the client, size matters, explains Aaron Oddy, Sales Engineer, CENTIEL UK Ltd. To find the right size for the UPS, understanding the size of the load is necessary. UPS systems are commonly measured in power ratings of kVA or kW, depending on the load requirement. Historically, sizing in kVA was standard practice as it is understood that the apparent power is different to the actual power. For example, a 100kVA UPS designed with a power factor (pf) of 0.8 can only deliver 80kW of true power. Factoring apparent and actual is critical in making the right calculation for your system. The gap between apparent and actual power has become less over time with the latest technology of UPS systems offering a unity power factor of 1.0, meaning kVA = kW. However, it is still necessary to check to see if the actual load has a power factor to size the system correctly using the equation below. Actual Power (KW) = (Apparent Power (KVA) x UPS Power Factor) Here’s a working example comparing 0.9pf and 1.0pf: If the Unity Power Factor of a UPS is 1.0, a load with apparent power of 60KVA will be 60KW. Simple. However, if the Power Factor of the UPS is 0.9 then the true or actual power of a 60KVA UPS will be 54KW of actual power. Therefore, it’s important to understand the actual rather than apparent load to determine the size of the UPS needed. We also don’t want to oversize a UPS as this is inefficient. A UPS which is too big can cost more to buy, more to run and more to maintain, adding significantly adding to the TCO over time. With standalone or monolithic UPS, there is less flexibility on rightsizing. If a UPS is required to support a 100kW load on day one with projected load growth of up to 200kW, installing a 200kW at day oneinitially would be inefficient and unnecessary. Although the system is future proofed, it is double the size required from day one. A modular system is far more flexible and a 100kW (Unity Power Factor) UPS could be installed with the capacity to add modules using a pay as you grow approach up to full capacity. Only the infrastructure around the UPS needs to be ready for future growth, allowing for system upgrades without the need to transfer the load to bypass or a site shutdown. Rightsizing the UPS from day one reduces overall capital expenditure and minimises running and maintenance costs. It's the same with the DC components of an installation. To right-size batteries we need to understand a client’s shut down procedure. If there is a power cut, how long does it take to safely shutdown the critical load safely? Is a three-hour run-time really needed? For example, Hospitals, adhere to HTM compliance of a one-hour autonomy. However, other clients may only need, half an hour or 40 minutes. It’s all dependant on site requirements. Lead is priced on weight, so it’s possible to reduce the investment in the lead-acid batteries proportionally. This also influences the amount of space needed to house batteries and cooling to keep them at their optimum working temperature of <200C. The term efficiency also requires attention. Most marketing material will state the efficiency level of the UPS, but it’s important to look more deeply at what this means. Most UPS are incredibly efficient if run at 100% load. However, when the load demand reduces significantly so can the overall system efficiency. The pandemic is a prime example of where equipment was not being used to full capacity and a reduced load meant that some UPS systems were not operating at the best point in their efficiency curve. Particularly systems with aging technology. To mitigate this, look for a UPS that has a flat efficiency curve meaning it sill performs optimally even at lower loads. So, when it comes to UPS systems, size is definitely important. Calculate the rating of the UPS system based on the actual power of the load measured in KW; don’t oversize systems; query the necessary autonomy and ensure the UPS can remain efficient if the load tails off. final decision on a site for the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant – the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production, or STEP – will be made by the minister for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy around the end of 2022. A shortlist includes five prime sites: Ardeer, in North Ayrshire, Scotland, Goole (in the East Riding of Yorkshire), Moorside, in Cumbria, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, in Nottinghamshire, and Severn Edge in Gloucestershire. The programme reflects the aims of STEP - a government-backed initiative to build a prototype fusion energy plant in the UK. The STEP plant aims to generate net electricity as well as demonstrate how the plant will be maintained and how it will produce its own fuel. STEP will pave the way for the commercialisation of fusion and the potential development of a fleet of future energy plants around the world. The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is projecting that it first operations in the early 2040s. UKAEA carries out fusion energy research on behalf of the UK
and estimates that operations could commence in the early 2040s. UKAEA currently carries out fusion energy research on behalf of the UK government. In addition to its initial £222 million commitment to STEP, the government has already invested £184 million for new fusion facilities, infrastructure and apprenticeships at Culham Science Centre near Oxford and at Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The planned UK facilities would feature a ‘tokamak’ design which uses magnetic fields to confine a plasma of heavy isotopes of hydrogen, tritium and deuterium, which fuse under extreme heat and pressure. STEP would be a spherical tokamak which holds the plasma in a cored-apple shape. UKAEA’s MAST Upgrade spherical tokamak device, due to start operation in late 2020, will will be an earlyversion of the final STEP design. With a total diameter of only around 10-metres, STEP will be relatively small in comparison to ITER.

n 26th November, 2021, the Minister for Business, Energy and Corporate Responsibility, Lord Callanan, officially opened the new Leeds site of leading energy and water efficiency company, Cenergist. NEWS Veolia plans to create hydrogen gas supply infrastructure & decarbonise the UK energy supply

eading resource management company, Veolia, is advancing its programme to create the hydrogen gas supply infrastructure and decarbonise the UK energy supply. Believed to be the first application of its type in the UK, the company's latest development is now managing projects which incorporate electrolyser technology to derive hydrogen from water, and powering these using the low carbon electricity from its Energy Recovery Facilities (ERF). Future use of the hydrogen could include both replacing the use of fossil fuel on the gas grid and providing alternative zero carbon fuel.. For many years, methane gas has been used to heat homes and businesses, and used in power stations to generate electricity. As a result currently 85% of homes and 40% of the UK’s electricity rely on gas. But when methane burns it still releases carbon, which contributes to climate change. Veolia's projects will accelerate progress towards climate protection and a net zero future, by replacing fossil fuels and realising the potential to decarbonise heat in industry, businesses and homes, and provide vehicle fuels. By using electrolysis, the process which uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, it could create hydrogen that can be stored for future energy needs. This will cut carbon emissions, and is a potential future solution for decarbonisation as water is the by-product when hydrogen is used. The gas industry is testing ways to use hydrogen in the gas grid, and Veolia is already preparing sites to be able to use this hydrogen in a range of on-site energy plants such as combined heat and power units, and industrial boiler plant. Commenting on this latest zero carbon initiative, Donald Macphail, Chief Operating Officer Treatment at Veolia said: "Reducing carbon emissions and slowing environmental change is now a priority. By developing new ways of generating zero carbon hydrogen we have the potential of covering the energy needs of our modern lives, and stopping the climate damaging impact of CO2. This represents a real step forward on the route to a net-zero world. Veolia currently operates ten plants that take around 2.3 million tonnes of non-recyclable waste and transform this into electricity for over 400,000 homes. This combined generating capacity of 180MWe takes pressure off the stretched UK electrical grid and effectively avoids using fossil fuels for generation." Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This reaction takes place in a unit called an electrolyzer. Electrolyzers can range in size from small, appliance-size equipment that is well-suited for small-scale distributed hydrogen production to large-scale, central production facilities that could be tied directly to renewable or other nongreenhouse-gas-emitting forms of electricity production. Like fuel cells, electrolyzers consist of an anode and a cathode separated by an electrolyte. Different electrolyzers function in different ways, mainly due to the different type of electrolyte material involved and the ionic species it conducts.

TGen has completed a new standby power solution for the historic University of Sheffield, a Russell Group University in South Yorkshire. DTGen supplied and installed the 3 MVA at 11 KV generator in a bespoke, 65dba, container with remote cooling package, 45,000 litre bulk fuel tank and management system. The tailored installation has penthouse airways for the inlet and outlet airflow attenuators. The team also developed a ComAp HV control system using fibre optic communications to control the 27 high-voltage vacuum breakers around the existing HV network throughout the campus. This modular control package was achieved using various outstations and panels networked to control the switching, monitoring and connection of the load throughout a number of buildings during any mains power outage. Located in the new university’s energy centre built by Vital Energy, the system has been designed so that with high load demand during a prolonged outage
the 3 MVA generator can operate in parallel with the 2MW CHP unit. This provides the University with an even greater level of power resilience. With both the generator and CHP under control of the ComAp system, the facility is also capable of seamless transfer back to the utility incomer supply with G-99 protection. The system is also designed to ensure that the generator can be tested on the energy centre load with automatic front and back synchronisation and network configuration ensuring minimum disruption to the university power network. Kenny Berrie, Head of Technical at DTGen, said: “We’ve been delivering robust backup power solutions to universities and educational facilities throughout the UK for more than 50 years. Our power solutions team is technically expert, dealing with a wide range of installations in many historic sites.”
Kohler supplies thirteen 1650KVA gensets for UK data centre
Thirteen 1,650 kVA diesel generators (T1650) will be delivered to shortly to a data centre client, says KOHLER. The G3 performance class sets have been tested at Hodgson Acoustics Company Ltd before delivery and installation. The G3 - T1650 1650kVA Kohler generating set (50Hz) is equipped
with a Mitsubishi engine ((S12RF1PTAW2) 400/230V. The gensets offer a number of interesting features including an electronic governor, a mechanically welded chassis with anti-vibration suspension, a radiator for core temperature of 48/50°C max with mechanical fan, a protective grille for the fan and rotating parts (CE option), an exhaust compensators with flanges and a 24 V charge alternator and starter. KOHLER® diesel generators are built to power data centres of all sizes in every location around the world, reports the company. entrica has announced it is taking a minority stake in HiiROC, the hydrogen production technology company which helping to combat climate change with affordable hydrogen produced at scale but without CO2 emissions. HiiROC has completed a £26 million funding raise with new investors including Melrose Industries, HydrogenOne, Centrica, Hyundai, and Kia, who join existing strategic investors Wintershall Dea and VNG. HiiROC’s proprietary technology converts biomethane, flare gas or natural gas into clean hydrogen and carbon black, through an innovative electrolysis process using thermal plasma. This results in zero CO2 “turquoise hydrogen” at a comparable cost to steam methane reforming but without the emissions and using only one fifth of the energy required by water electrolysis. "Our technology will produce low-cost, zero emission hydrogen, delivered to customers on a modular, scalable basis at the point of demand." Tim Davies, HiiROC Chief Executive Officer The solid carbon byproduct, carbon black, has applications ranging from tyres, building materials and as a soil enhancer. Its production using HiiROC’s technology avoids the emissions and pollution inherent in the predominant oil furnace manufacturing process. The HiiROC technology can be placed where hydrogen is needed, thereby using existing infrastructure and avoiding storage and transport costs. HiiROC has strong growth potential right across the hydrogen economy from grid injection and electricity generation to decarbonising industry by replacing natural gas, flare mitigation and synthetic fuels. Initial projects include a 400kg/day hydrogen facility recently announced by Wintershall Dea and VNG, as well as at EPi’s biomethane pilot plant in Chelmsford, and with Northern Gas Networks as part of its hydrogen programme. This round of funding will expand the deployment of pilot units into more customer segments, positioning the technology for future roll-out. The modular units have practical applications from small scale, such as transport and heating, through to large plants decarbonising gas-fired power stations and for hydrogen blending in the grid. "There remains a great deal of work to be done to make hydrogen affordable, sustainable and available at scale, but HiiROC’s technology demonstrates that this can be achieved sooner rather than later," commented Greg McKenna, Managing Director of Centrica Business Solutions Furthermore, the funding will accelerate HiiROC’s technical development, broadening its application into areas such as low carbon synthetic fuels and mitigating gas flaring/venting to help meet global methane emission reduction goals announced at COP26. It was able to assist a client called BituChem, a road surfacing specialist based in Gloucestershire, faced with the tricky issue of selecting a new genset. BituChem had been previously reliant on power supplied from a generator to run plant onsite. This was a 25-yearold, 300kVA generator which, whilst still running, had started to show serious signs of old age. BituChem decided to look into replacing the generator for more reliable power on site, future proofing their operations at the same time. HFT Forklifts, a leading supplier of material handling and storage products, were a long term supplier to site and were asked to source a new generator for site. BituChem was keen to source a new generator which offered increased fuel efficiency, more reliable power delivery and provided a long term solution to powering the plant on site. Issues such as motor starts & low loading were key factors which BituChem wanted to

Following a period of load monitoring on site, and taking into account the various motor starts involved duringplant start up, it was determined that a QIS 335 (300kVA prime/330 kVA standby) was the appropriate generator for the task. n September 2021 Wilson Power Solutions supplied 14 x 2.8MVA transformers to the 34 MW / 68 MWh Contego project near Burgess Hill in West Sussex. The project was developed by Harmony Energy and Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV). The site uses a battery storage system of 28 Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries with Tesla’s Autobidder AI software for real-time trading and control. This project is connected to the UK Power Network’s (UKPN) distribution network, providing the capability to store energy from renewable sources to be used during peak hours. This also increases the flexibility of the UK National Grid, while playing a part in the country’s attempt to move away from fossil fuels. This ground-breaking technology will also help prevent price spikes. On Monday 6th September 2021 energy prices reached a record high as wind output fell sharply and as a result coal and gas stations were paid thousands of pounds to switch on at short notice. Battery energy storage would have been able to fulfil the needs of the energy companies at a much lower cost while also being more environmentally-friendly. All 14 Transformers that have been supplied to the Contego site are 2800kVA Wilson e1 transformers, constructed out of aluminium and filled with oil. The Transformers are also hermetically sealed which means no air, moisture, dust, etc. can enter the tank which will dramatically reduce maintenance costs. A spokesman commented: " Wilson Power Solutions is proud to support this revolutionary battery energy storage project, taking a huge step towards the UK National Grid’s goal to decarbonize Britain’s energy grid.Every battery storage project we have worked on in the past had had unique requirements. We service these projects through our special transformers with bespoke design and build customised to the site needs and specifications." In September 2021 the company was awarded the “Innovative Energy Project of the Year” for the Western Europe Region for its Ultra-Low Loss Transformers at the AEE Awards 2021. The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), was founded in 1977 by Albert Thumann and is a nonprofit professional society of over 18,000 members in more than 100 countries. The mission of AEE is “to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for Sustainable Development.” This award recognises an innovative energy project (includes renewable and green ventures, and those making a significant impact on climate change) that has been in operation for at least 6 months and can be authenticated with the actual installation, operating costs and achievements. Transformers are designed to operate for 30 years, but in many cases, they are kept in operation for more than 50 years. In the UK, the average age of a ground-mounted distribution transformer is 63 years (FOI Ofgem). According to Wilson Power, transformers are all too-often ignored and completely overlooked as an energy-saving opportunity despite older models being vast consumers of energy. Wilson Power Solutions says it ‘prides itself on being ahead of the curve’ and in providing innovative and sustainable energy solutions. In 2008, it became the first transformer manufacturer in the UK to address energy waste through distribution transformer losses. Seven years after this the EU commission regulated transformer losses (Tier 1, 2015). We were also the first company in the UK to introduce Super and Ultra Low Loss Transformers made of an amorphous metal core. 10
he development of the hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine (H2-ICE) involving a medium-duty 6.7 L and a heavy-duty 15 L platform has begun, comments Cummins Inc. Part of the development work at Cummins Darlington facility in the north-east will be supported by approximately $10 million supplied by the UK government, and provided under the aegis of the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). Based on next-generation platforms, the goal for the hydrogen engines is to achieve zero carbon emissions, and enhanced power density and improved thermal efficiency. Comments Srikanth Padmanabhan, president, Engine Business, Cummins Inc.: “We’ve established significant goals as part of our Planet 2050 sustainability strategy, including a target of zero emissions “Reducing well-to-wheels carbon emissions requires innovation of both energy sources and power solutions. “While use cases for battery electric and fuel cell electric powertrains are
promising, the pairing of green hydrogen in the proven technology of internal combustion engines, provides an important complement to future zero emissions solutions.” He explains: “Cummins’ leadership and deep knowledge in gaseous-fuelled technologies will enable us to develop these new hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines for medium and heavy-duty markets. “We are ready to accelerate the pace of our H2-ICE program to ensure Cummins continues to be a leader in this new, exciting technology.” Cummins said that using existing engine platforms for the H2-ICE program also means that it will be able to use its existing engine production facilities and service support network reducing costs and improving efficiency. In addition. the company can also reduce equipment redevelopment timelines, as many existing driveline components can be retained.”
A 60kva genset provided to Kier Regional Civils for long-term hire

ier Regional Civils required a sustainable, cost-effective, and suitable power solution for their compound in Whaley Bridge. Wernick Poawer Solutions was able to supply a 60kva Generator with a 3000-litre fuel tank for longterm hire contract. The existing onsite generator, sourced from an external supplier, had been running at lower than its optimum capacity which was causing breakdown issues.The generator was using more fuel and oil which meant that costs and emissions increased. The client was supplied with a 60kva generator, 3000L fuel tank and a 125Amp mains distribution unit (MDU) which is designed to facilitate the connection of the generator’s output to the client’s equipment or premises.
Thanks to Wernick Power Solutions products - specifically thanks to its generator - the client was able to save over 500-litres of fuel a week, reducing both costs and the carbon footprint via the reduction of emissions. The generator was equipped with the Power Solutions’ telemetry service, a GPRS tracking and monitoring system which enables the monitoring of fuel, oil, and water levels. The telemetry service provided also offers increased security.

irst released in mid-2021, the LSA 47.3 alternator features increased efficiency and starting kVA over its predecessor, and also benefits from the implementation of the lastest technologies developed by Nidec Leroy-Somer. "The LSA 47.3 is an important step forward in our strategy to optimize our product range" said Wenbin Ding, low voltage range product manager. "The benefits of this new product are significant, with real improvements where it matters most: efficiency, power and starting kVA. In addition, the optimized cooling system we implemented means that hot spots are reduced inside the machine. Ultimately this means a better reliability and longer lifetime, which is essential for the applications all LSA alternators are built to support,” he says. The LSA 47.3 delivers a rated power between 410 and 660 kVA at 50 Hz (495 to 825 kVA at 60 Hz). The 660 kVA rating (825 kVA at 60 Hz) was previously held by the LSA 49.3. Thanks to the cooling circuit optimization, the LSA 47.3 is now able to reach this power node for prime and demanding application. This is a significant benefit for generator set manufacturers as the same power is made available through a more compact machine. The LSA 47.3 alternator features a SHUNT excitation system with a R250 regulator as standard. An AREP auxiliary winding excitation system with D350 digital regulator version is also available to improve transient performances and provide high overload capacities. A D550 digital regulator can also be used for grid connected applications. A Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) excitation system is also available as an option. The LSA 47.3 is fully interchangeable with the LSA 47.2 (shaft height and feet configuration), and can therefore be coupled with all diesel engines on the market for this power range. It is now available for orders. The LSA 47.3 offers the following power nodes: 410, 455, 500, 550, 600, 660 kVA at 50Hz & 510, 570, 625, 690, 750, 825 kVA at 60Hz. This alternator is optimised for prime and demanding applications such as marine and cogeneration. It offers an efficiency of up to 95.7% at cos φ 0.8, which ranks it among the best in the category. With the LSA 47.3 introduction, the LSA 47.2 will soon be retired from the market, as well as the LSA 49.3 S4 (660 kVA), reports the company. The LSAH 42.3 is being released to complement the LSAH 44.3 released the previous year. It uses the same heat recovery system, andfeatures leading electrical and thermal efficiency values. The LSAH 42.3 has been designed to be packaged into small natural gas generator sets built for combined production of heat and electricity. The main application of these gensets are residential and public buildings central heating. The LSAH 42.3 delivers a rated power between 10 and 33 kVA at 50 Hz in continuous service (from 12.5 to 41 kVA at 60 Hz). The alternator is fitted as standard with an AREP excitation system and a D350 regulator. Paralleling with the public network for the resale of electricity production surplus is also possible with a D550 AVR. Thanks to its cooling and heat recovery system, the LSAH 42.3 offers premium performance, especially in situations involving intensive use.

ale Power Solutions was involved in a £3m upgrade for backup power system at UK bank’s data centre. The company reports that a banking client had a 6-generator system providing backup power to a data centre. Each system provided 1 MW, 1250 kVA. The system had become outdated and parts had become obsolete which prevented necessary repairs and servicing from being carried out to keep the system current and reliable. Dale Power Solutions began with a rigorous survey, and the development of a 5-year programme to upgrade the full backup power provision. Some of the generators were replaced with modern components and made fit for purpose. Replacement of obsolete components, on otherwise good generators, was a cost-effective solution to extend the life of parts of the backup power systems. The refurbished generators received new open protocol systems, providing
modern functionality with accessible monitoring and control systems. The technical team from Dale Power Solutions also updated the exhaust, cooling and acoustic systems at the data centre. Fuel systems were upgraded with bunded pipework and new fuel day tanks were provided to comply with environmental legislation and mitigate the risk of fuel leakage. In another important genset contract, Dale Power Solutions was asked to provide diesel generators for an offshore gas platform. The generators has to be situated in a Zone 2 environment where explosive gases could occur. Dale provided a 200 kW generator and another emergency 200 kW genset Each element was designed to manage the overall finished weight and not exceed the offshore crane’s limitations, reports the company. Materials were integrated to extend the life of the equipment, reports Dale, and all components were fully bunded.
National Grid is ‘confident’ lights will stay on this winter 2021 National Grid says it expects gas and electricity supplies will meet the country’s needs over the looming winter but prices indicate there is a steep price rise on the way. The gap between electricity supply and demand is expected to be narrower this winter than last as the country battles an energy crunch but there should be no disruption from the lights or gas flames going out, according to key industry reports. System operator National Grid released eagerly awaited forecasts covering both gas and electricity supplies – with both expressing confidence that supply would meet demand over the cold months ahead. Its expectations come as raw energy prices shift across Europe and UK, with gas costs hitting record levels.
The National Grid’s annual winter outlook, which assesses its readiness to keep the lights on, forecast an electricity margin of 6.6% capacity, lower than last winter’s 8.3%. That means it expects to have 6.6% of supply left over at peak times on average.

In the UK, RWE has partnered with industry to move towards the use of hydrogen in industrial processes in the South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC). Through RWE’s Pembroke Net Zero Centre (PNZC) initiative, the company is investigating the feasibility of green hydrogen production located at the Pembroke Power Station site, in addition to the potential for consuming hydrogen in the power station. In the longer term, there is also the opportunity to produce gigawatts of green hydrogen connected to offshore floating wind in the Celtic Sea. The UK plays a key role in RWE’s strategy to grow its renewables portfolio and to become climate neutral by 2040. The company is currently constructing the 857 MW offshore wind farm Triton Knoll (RWE’s pro-rata share: 506 MW) off the Lincolnshire coast which is expected to be fully commissioned in the first quarter of 2022. RWE is also building the 1.4 gigawatts Sofia offshore wind project on Dogger Bank. This will enlarge RWE’s UK portfolio of nine offshore wind farms. RWE is also progressing four extension projects in the UK, with a combined potential installed capacity of around 2.6 gigawatts. The company recently bid for two new adjacent offshore sites – also on Dogger Bank. 14

O2, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine, is now generating power at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney - with a backup genset provided by Teksan. The 680-tonne, 74m long O2 is Orbital’s first commercial demonstrator. Expected to operate in the waters off Orkney for the next 15 years, the O2 has the capacity to meet the annual electricity demand of around 2,000 UK homes with clean, predictable power from the fastflowing waters. Electricity is transferred from the turbine via a dynamic cable to the seabed and a static cable along the seabed to the local onshore electricity network. A Teksan generator has been specifically developed for the sea conditions involved with the project. Temporary power package at an art deco building in London Powerhire won a contract to provide a temporary power package for a classic art deco building located in the Shoreditch area of East London. The company supplied two 200-kVA generators for a mixed-use site whilst a permanent standby solution was being decided on by the clients.
A
long-standing customer of its sister firm, The Generator Company, Powerhire received an enquiry about temporary power for a project they were working on in London. Temporary power was required to support a mixed -use building whilst a permanent standby power solution was sought. Powerhire's technical sales manager arranged a site visit to discuss the power needs and any site restrictions for the building. The award-winning art-deco-style masterpiece ilocated n a trendy Shoreditch area of London, the structure was completed seven years ago for mixed-use purposes. The site contained 276 residential spaces comprising a residents-only spa and cinema, a public square and employment space. The 38,000m2 design retained the original restored 1933 art deco building with a further 26 floors added tp pr ovide what observers called ‘a strikingly-elegant addition to the London skyline. After Powerhire’s team had met with the client and inspected the site it was determined that all the temporary equipment

would need to be housed in the underground car park for the duration of the project which would mean transporting all the equipment via the car lift down into the basement. This immediately established som e challenges the installers would need to overcome. Whilst onsite Powerhire’s technical sales manager confirmed the weight limit and the door size of the lift to ensure that transporting equipment using this approach was feasible before discussing the project with the operations team. A company spokesman comments: “With the equipment positioned in the basement, we had to consider the dispersion of the diesel fumes from the generators into the outside world. “We contacted one of our local suppliers who offered an extraction kit for the control of diesel fumes in buildings and other sensitive areas comprising a very powerful centrifugal fan which was just what was needed.” Taking into account the size and weight restrictions of the car lift and the extraction of the fumes a proposal was submitted to the customer offering 2 x 200kVA temporary

generators to run in sync, providing a total of 400kVA, to support the life safety system within the building including fire alarms, elevators and sprinkler systems in the event of a power failure. As a result of the building currently not having any backup power in place, an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) together with a 100-metre cable run was included to monitor the incomi ng voltage. When utility power is interrupted, the ATS immediately senses the problem and signals the generators to start. Stage one of the project began with all equipment being delivered using Powerhire’s own Hiab lorry. Traffic was temporarily halted to allow for the offload at street level. The generator canopies were modified prior to delivery by removing the centre lifting ring on the top of the cano py due to height restrictions of the car lift. The equipment was offloaded and with only a 4mm gap at the top to play with, Powerhire’s engineers manoeuvred the generators into the lift and down into the basement car park where they were skated into empty car parking bays ready for stage two connections. The engineers returned to site to connect the 2 x 200kVA generators to the clients Switchboard via a 40 0Amp Auto Mains Failure (AMF) panel. The car park was in constant use by the building’s residents so the main power and control cables were installed onto a cable tray suspended from the carpark roof. This was followed by fitting an exhaust extraction system to control diesel fumes from both generators. The equipment was designed to carry the exhaust gases out of the car park into the open in the event of the generators being activated. Powered directly from the generators, the extraction system was designed to come online as soon as the generators begin to run. All equipment was scheduled to remain on the site whilst a permanent standby power solution was being sought by the customer. Installing new gensets for London’s Police Authority Powertecnique successfully secured the tender for the replacement Generator & UPS system packages at a regional London Police Station. After a year-long consultation period between the police authority and their approved external M&E advisors the existing generator set was deemed to be beyond economical repair and undersized, reports Powertecnique, one of the UK’s top power providers.

owertecnique reports a recent success in securing an important contract for the replacement Generator & UPS system packages which were based at a regional London Police Station. After a year-long consultation period between the police authority and their approved external M&E advisors the existing generator set was deemed to be beyond economical repair and undersized. The replacement generator set need ed to be sized 70% larger than the original, however due to space constraints it had to fit within the same footprint within an existing building. As part of the requirement the new generator package also had to be supplied with an improved noise attenuation because of the proximity of residential properties; it was also needed to power a water-mist fire suppression system. Installers also had to supply a re placement exhaust flue rising

through the building as the old one had been found to leak during pressure testing. Powertecnique was tasked with supplying and installing new fuel pipework to connect the replacement generator set to the existing remote fuelling system. In addition to the above, the two existing 40,000 litre bulk fuel tanks required refurbishment which involved a full internal clean of the tanks, fuel polishing and then certified disposal of contamination and fuel sludge. One existing UPS system was relocated without any interruption to supply, and another uninterruptible power supply which had been serving the station’s Comms Room, was replaced with a new 125kVA modular UPS system to allow for redundancy. This new UPS systems was fitted with a bespoke narrow battery rack to fit into the avai lable walkway whilst allowing sufficient space for future UPS maintenance.

The entire project, providing new generator sets and UPS systems for the police authorities, was achieved in accordance with the client’s stipulated programme. This project was completed within sixmonths of order receipt which included a break in site activities over the festive period. The new generator set was longer than the o ld one due to the increased power rating, along with the radiator being set-mounted. Accordingly, to fit the new system into the available space required close co-ordination between Powertecnique, the ventilation subcontractors, the client’s project team, and the switchgear manufacturer. Additional problems were posed by the low ceiling in one half of the plantroom and increased air flow, which necessit ated the use of forced ventilation to provide air for cooling and combustion to the back end of the generator. The police station also remained fully operational 24/7 during these works, which required Powertecnique to work closely with the end user to ensure their essential services were not disrupted. Southwest hospital gets new genset package with fuel tanks The WB Power team installed two 1650kVA Kohler generating sets onsite at a hospital in Cornwall in November 2021. Four fuel tanks were installed as part of an intricate fuel management solution, involving 121,600 litres of fuel. The generating setshad to be installed in an existing plant room with limited space, reports UKPN.

ust last month the WB Power team installed 2 x 1650kVA Kohler generating sets onsite at a hospital in Cornwall. Altogether, four fuel tanks were installed as part of a key fuel management solution, in volving the storage of 121,600 litres of fuel. The generating sets were installed in an existing plant room with limited space. With the generating sets the technical team also put in accompanying ancill ary equipment such as a fuel management solution, plant room attenuation equipment, exhaust systems and then carried out full commissioning and testing. The initial stage of the project involved the removal and ‘disposal’ of the sites previous generating set, and its accompanying ancillary equipment. The equipment which had to be taken out included two generating sets, an LV Switchboard, fuel tanks, sound a ttenuation equipment and an exhaust

silencer and flue. Fortunately, thanks to WB Power’s operations in the used generator market, a buyback price for each of the generating sets which were removed was included in the project quote, with the agreed price being deducted from the total project cost. WB Power also provided a price to clean and de-gas the existing bulk fuel tanks prior to removal, ensuring they would be in working order if used in the future. The new generating sets were carefully selected by the WB Power estimating team following a detailed analysis of the hospital’s requirements. WB Power was able to strike a careful balance involving fuel efficiency, upfront costs and ongoing service requirements. Following a detailed analysis of the hospitals power requirements, WB Power proposed the install ation of 2 x 1650kVA Kohler, three phase, prime rated generating sets.

The 50 Hz T2200 Kohler G3 performance class genset (400/230 volts) features a S16R-Y1PTAA2-3B Mitsubishi engine and a Standby Rating of 2200 and a Prime Rating of 2050. The sets use the ComAp IGNTC-BB synchronising control panel (known as the InteliGen NTC BaseBox), a genset controller for both single and multiple gensets operating in s tandby or paralleling modes. This is a complete integrated genset solution and signal sharing via CAN bus offering many communication options Ethernet connection (RJ45), USB 2.0 slave interface, 1× RS232 / 2× RS485 interface with Modbus protocol support; Analog / GSM / ISDN / CDMA modem communication support; SMS messages; ECU Modbus interface and isolated secondary RS485. The sets were installed with ad ditional bespoke work, which included an automatic lubricating oil replenishment system, a fusible link released fire valve, an enclosed spring anti-vibration mountings and Optima red top (AMG) batteries (duty/standby). The generating sets were configured to be fed fuel from two 3,200-litre bunded day tanks, which were installed within a durasteel enclosure. These tanks would act as an immediate fuel sourc e and were installed below the air inlet attenuators, within a concrete wall, offering additional support and protection. The day tanks were fed fuel by two 56,000 litre bunded bulk fuel storage tanks, which came complete with: -Tank mounted duty/standby fuel transfer pumps -Tank mounted fuel polishing system -Duplex fuel strainers and differential pressure indicators -C2020 Contents gauge -Balance connect ions and valves These tanks were installed with a tank access ladder with a platform between, ensuring engineers could easily access to the manways and level switches. The generating set was installed with both inlet and outlet attenuators, which were designed to achieve a sound level of 72dBA @1m per set. The attenuators were finished in enhanced paint and were supplied with weather louvres and motorised i nlet/gravity outlet louvres. WB Power provided a twin-wall exhaust flue for each new generating set. The flues were designed and installed to exit the room adjacent to the discharge attenuators. They then rose up a mast to a height of 15m. Due to incoming emergency aircraft on the hospital grounds, the flue included three aircraft warning lights and lightning protection. www.wbpsltd.co.uk

Double output thanks to new containerised cogeneration The Regenerative Energies department of Gebrüder Nooren GbR has purchased eight containerized MWM biogas cogeneration power plants, doubling the installed electrical output of its existing biogas plants. The site has a lot to teach UK users of similar biogas systems, reports UKPN.

ebrüder Nooren GbR is a mediumsized agricultural business in Germany's federal state of SaxonyAnhalt. Apart from crop farming and animal husbandry, the company's business fields also include the production of biogas. Biogas plants are run to utilise animal waste in a climate-friendly way. from late 2018 to April 2020, eight locations were furnished with containerized MWM cogeneration power plants. "Up grading our cogeneration power plant locations with MWM TCG 3016 V12 and V16 containers was quite a huge project. Within about two years, we more than doubled our installed electrical output from 5.2 MW to 10.8 MW," comments Tobias Jäsch, Project Manager Biogas at Nooren Bioenergie Verwaltungs GmbH, the professional responsible for the rollout and co-ordination of the extension. The new MWM TCG 3016 genset s in the ready-to-use containerised cogeneration power plants are to facilitate the buffering of

peak loads by flex operation. The existing cogeneration power plants, most of which are powered by MWM engines of the last generation, serve the generation of the base load. "In view of the good experiences we had gained with MWM engines, we did not hesitate to decide in favour of the MWM TCG 3016 gensets with t heir high availability." Reports Tobias Jäsch: "As with every entirely new system, a number of minor glitches were encountered at the first location, but were resolved speedily. “Starting from the second location and engine, everything worked out smoothly, and this has not changed so far. To date, we have not experienced any serious outages or malfunctions of any of the new containerised cogeneration power plants, and we are still impressed by the reliability and high availability of the TCG 3016 gensets." Besides the standard MWM container with its genset, peripherals, and control panel, the package includes a s pecial gas treatment system. "For us, the solution with the MWM biogas containers was the most efficient way to double the output of our existing cogeneration power plants and equip them for flex operation," explains Jäsch. Mega Project: eight biogas plants expanded in less than two years The power produced from biogas at the eight locations is fed into the public grid. The heat from the power production is used onsite, e.g. to heat the pigsties, production buildings, offices, and recycling facilities. The substrate required for the production of biogas consists of liquid manure, corn, and other energy plants, most of which are supplied by the company's own operations. Temporary power for Falklands military base Woodlands Power has filled a contract to support an MOD contractor working on an electricity grid at an airbase in the Falkland Islands. Temporary power support was required while 39 x 11kV substations were being upgraded on the airbase in the South Atlantic, reports UKPN.

The key requirement of the upgrade was that the generators needed to be robust and reliable, as any issues would be difficult to fix, due to limited support and geographical remoteness.. A company spokesman from Woodlands Power commented: "We worked with the customer to perform a cost and usage analysis to understand whether it would be better to hire or buy the generators during the 9-month project. “We also invited him to visit our head office to see the units he was interested in buying in our hire fleet, to allow him to witness the units being tested first-hand and after many hours of service.

“The customer decided to purchase the generators to retain the asset capital after the project finished. Controlled and optimised by Shell-owned Limejump, the battery will help balance the UK’s electricity demand, providing electricity for up to 10,000 homes for a day before being recharged, reports UKPN.

hell Energy Europe Limited has signed a multiyear offtake agreement in early 2020 to trade all of the power from the the 100-megawatt system its has established in Minety in Wiltshire, South West England. The move - says the company - is part of Shell’s wider work to help accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources. The Minety project, consisting of two 50megawatt batteries, was developed by Pen so Power and funded by China Huaneng Group and CNIC Corporation. “Flexible storage and supply systems such as Minety have an essential role in balancing supply and demand – especially as renewable power sources become increasingly central to the UK’s energy needs,” David Wells, VP Shell Energy Europe, said. “We fully support the UK’s target of achieving a net-zero emissions society by 2050. Projects like th is will enable that transition.” The Minety scheme is now the largest battery within National Grid ESO’s Dynamic

Developed in t hree stages of 50MW each, Minety Energy Storage is the largest energy storage project in Europe and one of the largest in the world. Luminous Energy developed the project with Low Carbon and it was subsequently acquired by China Huaneng Group (CHG) and Chinese government backed fund CNIC. Minety Energy Storage now stores the excess electricity generated from renewable sources and supplies that power to the grid when needed. It now helps in balancing the UK’s electricity supply and demand while facilitating the country’s transition to a net-zero carbon system. Shell Energy Europe Limited (SEEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shell, signed an agreement to off-take electricity from the initial 100MW battery storage project in February 2020 with Penso Power, who managed the construction of the project on behalf of CHG and CNIC. The site now has the capacity to provide electricity for up to 10,000 homes in a 24hour period before being recharged. Shell and Limejump structured a deal offering revenue certainty for multiple years via the strong backing of Shell’s offtaking capabilities whilst maximising revenues with Limejump’s tech-led battery optimisation and trading skill set. This is pivotal for battery storage de velopers as there is a high degree of uncertainty in UK power markets. The Minety scheme is now the largest battery within National Grid ESO’s Dynamic Containment market, which was set up last year to deal with sudden frequency issues through grid balancing. Limejump, the first company to optimise a battery in the Balancing Mechanism (in 2018) and with 38,000+ hours of optimisation experience (since 2016), will optimise the Minety 100MW battery in the market that offers the best returns for Penso Power, including but not limited to Dynamic Containment, FFR and the Capacity Market. Local authorities land sustainable warmth funding - ADE responds T

Social Energy closes electricity and gas supply business, continues in solar battery optimisation
R
enewable energy scale-up Social Energy has taken the decision to close its electricity and gas supply business in light of untenable current market conditions, but will continue to operate as a solar battery optimisation company, selling smart battery systems and providing ongoing savings to its customers. The cleantech company with 7,100+ connected solar battery customers acted as the energy supplier for 5,600 of its customers, helping them to keep their bills as low as possible, in addition to the savings that they make from their solar and battery systems. With the current spiking costs across wholesale electricity and gas, Social Energy has been forced to close its retail energy supply business, and like numerous other suppliers, enter Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process. Since its launch in 2019, Social Energy has always had a different business model to many other supply businesses, has never appeared on switching websites or offered loss-leading tariffs. However, with energy suppliers forced to now sell energy at a loss under the Ofgem price cap, the management team have concluded that the UK supply business is no longer viable. Whilst the company will close its Ofgem regulated UK Energy Supply business, Social Energy Supply Ltd., it will continue to run its core business in the supply and optimisation of smart solar battery systems, helping homeowners in both the UK and Australia to vastly reduce their energy bills. This continuation means that Social Energy’s existing customers will continue to receive benefits from their system, with monthly credits earned for taking part in the company’s smart battery community. In taking this difficult decision, the company will protect jobs and customers, and anticipates growth across its primary UK business. Rising energy bills continue to increase the financial case for purchasing a home rooftop solar system, with a connected battery. With prices expected to rise again for billpayers at the price-cap review in April 2022, there will be a greater need for homeowners to explore alternative ways of getting the energy that they need to power their homes and secure long-term certainty, whilst also supporting the UK’s transition to net zero. As the rising costs of energy will impact the most vulnerable in society hardest, Social Energy is also working to expand upon several trials with Social Housing landlords and Local Authorities, to provide an innovative solution that keeps bills low for tenants, whilst delivering a profitable investment to the asset owner. With this growth in mind, Social Energy plans to transition all of its supply company employees across to other parts of the group, reducing the impact to an already hard hit industry. The employer currently operates three UK offices in Gloucester, West Yorkshire and Oxford, running operations for its UK business and supporting its rapidly growing Australian business, which operates out of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

DI remains a priority concern for leaders of Arms’-Length Bodies; within their organisations and through the diverse range of sectors and public they serve. In this session, ACE members were joined by Sam Lister, DG Strategy and Operations, Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Nicola Dandridge, Chief Executive at the Office for Students and finally Dr. Ros Rivaz, Chair of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has oversight of 45 Public Bodies, the department will shortly release a new Diversity & Inclusion Strategy which will address representation, inclusion and wider understanding. Sam made the case for a robust evidence base to support diversity interventions. Dealing with disadvantage is a fundamental concern for the Office for Students (OfS), which was established by an Act of Parliament which requires attention to address gaps in student participation. OfS seeks to address socio-economic barriers of access to higher education, alongside side ethnicity and, mental health as a strategic priority. Nicola reflected on the particular importance of diversity to regulators: the need to promote rigour of attention and focus on EDI, concluding that consistency of focus is likely to have biggest impact. Context and place impact on diversity for Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Ros encouraged participants of the session to look at diversity as a necessary feature of employer strategy to address the skills gap post-Covid-19. More fuel for debate looking at the Red Diesel Rebate MPS Members will have seen several Current Thinking eshots over the past year or so on this topic. This has been followed ADuring closely by the Technical Committee as it is a regulatory change. consultation and discussion with HMRC, AMPS, and we assume others,
stressed that generating sets and other plant would very often have some red diesel in their tanks at the end of March 2022, as particularly emergency standby sets have low usage. The amendments to legislation are complex and involve changes to several separate laws, thus guidance is forecast to change as these changes are evaluated and implemented. When formal preliminary guidance was published in October 2021, we were surprised to read the following: “Vehicles used for both allowed and non-allowed purposes” If you use a vehicle (including any machines or appliances) which is used for both allowed and non-allowed purposes after the rules change, you will need to either: flush out the tank to remove all traces of rebated fuel when switching uses use full duty paid diesel or biofuels” This goes completely against what was requested. The implication is that as the rental companies have little control over the fuel which the renter uses, then every rental return will have to have its fuel tested to ascertain if red diesel has been used and tanks etc drained and flushed where necessary. Any fuel will have to be disposed of. The problem is that the HMRC will be likely hold the rental company liable for misuse, and in time, which renter used red diesel will be difficult for the rental company to ascertain. Recently we have had several communications from AMPS Members who operate in the rental sector who foresee several problems with the introduction of the new regulations, particularly in the agricultural sector where rebated fuel can continue to be used, but the rental plant is not segregated. Also, the rental companies trade fuel, but are not Registered Dealers in Controlled Oil (RDCO). The guidance - RED DIESEL – REBATED FUEL Examples: A customer hires a generator and tank with 2,000 litres of fuel in January 2022 and returns it with 2,000 litres of fuel. Can this be resold as stock fuel because it was bought it in good faith in January 2022 as red diesel? A customer hires a generator and full fuel tank with 2,000 litres in Jan 2022 and returns it with 1,500 litres in. The next hire will require this tank to be full with 2,000 litres in, so it will be topped up with white diesel, so the mixed fuel will be sold on. A future rental set, manufactured after March 2022, could be returned from an agricultural site with red diesel in the tank, even though it was rented out with white diesel in it. The Member was asked if he wished AMPS to take up the case on his behalf, since we can speak for all our members, not just one and he agreed. AMPS council and the Technical Committee were consulted and were in agreement that we should take the matter further with HMRC. We would appreciate any comments, advice etc. that Members may give and also any other problems that Members may envisage. We ask that this be sent to TechSec@AMPS.org.uk by 5pm Wednesday 8th December. We do know that other organisations are planning to contact HMRC over this issue. Non Road Mobile Machinery – Stage V emissions – transition scheme The NRMM Stage V emissions regulations came into effect following an EU Regulation in 2016, with some details released in 2017. Guidance was given in an industry sponsored FAQ document of which the latest version issued in January 2021 is attached here. A further updated version is expected in the next couple of months. A transition scheme was in place to allow manufacturers and traders to use up existing stock of non-compliant machinery. In simple terms, this was in two phases, as detailed below After the COVID pandemic, interruption to business resulted in lower than expected usage of stock material. As a result, in July 2020 the EU granted an extension to the transition scheme. In June 2021 the EU passed another amendment giving an extension to the transition for plant with a rating between 56 kW and 130 kW, being a 6-month extension for machine production and a 9-month extension for placing on the market. UK Leaving the EU The UK left the EU on 31st January 2020, retaining all existing EU regulations etc. into UK Law. Members are advised that the first amendment was included in the ‘retained’ UK law, regardless of the fact that the UK left the EU on 31 January 2020. This is due to the fact that the terms of the legally binding Brexit Withdrawal Agreement require the UK to implement all EU derived law that is applied prior to the end of the Brexit transition period, i.e. 31st December 2020. The revision will therefore be adopted in the UK in the same way as it is in the EU. The second amendment occurred after the end of the Withdrawal Agreement and does not therefore automatically apply in GB. Given the amount of legislative work underway in the UK, it is very unlikely that it will be formally applied. These requirements do apply in Northern Ireland, however.EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein) directly apply EU Regulations. Upgraded V-162 launched by Vestas Vestas has launched a 6.8 MW version of its V162 range of wind turbines of the EnVentus platform. The V162-6.8 MW is said to be globally applicable and combines an increased power rating and operational flexibility to deliver up to 7 % annual energy production depending on project-specific conditions. The V162-6.8 MW features flexible power ratings of 6.5 MW, 6.8 MW and 7.2 MW and expanded site applicability through an optional larger version of CoolerTop, a trade-marked nacelle cooling design. The performance improvements are said to be achieved through enhanced EnVentus powertrain and power conversion systems. “The V162-6.8 MW demonstrates how our modular product
enhances our ability to continuously innovate and lead the industry in developing customisable and sustainable energy solutions which meet our customers’ needs,” commented Anders Nielsen, Vestas chief technology officer. The V162-6.8 MW is said to benefit from enhanced transportability and siteability, as it will be based on Vestas’ new modularised nacelle concept, whereby the nacelle structure is divided into the main nacelle house containing the powertrain and the side compartment, with the power system including converter and transformer. Both nacelle compartments are designed to correspond to general industry logistics standards for road, rail, and sea transportation with less need for specialised handling. www.vestas.com
The new MAN new E3872 series: 44.0% efficiency and 735 kw power from just a 12-cylinder displacement
M
AN Engines has developed a biogas and natural gas engines designed for gensets. The MAN E3872 is a 29.6 L 12-cylinder four-stroke engine with spark ignition - a designed based on the MAN E3262 (25.8 L), t. The new engine produces 735 kW at 1,500 rpm. Length/width/height of the engine is 1760 x 1245 x 1410 mm and it has a dry weight of 2160 kg. The new engine uses the same crankcase as the E3262, a model which has been in production since 2010, the bore has been increased to 138 mm (+6 mm) and the stroke has increased to 165 mm (+7 mm). The E3872 incorporates the single turbo concept, a factor which has improved engine efficiency thanks to a fine-tuning of the inlet and outlet guide units (diffuser and nozzle ring). This allows the turbo to operated at optimal efficiency.The engine also uses a new piston bowl design to help accelerate combustion and increase efficiency. The pre-chamber spark plugs, specifically adapted for the combustion chamber, help the mix to combust in several areas, which helps to reduce NOx output. As an additional customer benefit the E3872 is using a hydraulic valve lash adjuster. Thias makes regular checking and adjustment of the valve train unnecessary. Machine operators will benefit from the elimination of routine maintenance intervals and the resulting costs.Other modifications include control times based on the Atkinson cycle. The natural gas and biogas variants of the E3872 engine respectively produce 250 mg and 500 mg NOx. An aftertreatment system (such as SCR) has the potential to reduce this to 100 mg. MAN reports that the efficiency of this engine makes it particularly suitable for power generation applications. The engine operates with natural gas with NOx emissions = 250 mg/Nm³ (5% O2 petrol). A version for markets requiring speeds of 1,800 rpm (60 Hz) is also planned. As part of the process of converting our stationary natural gas engine range to “hydrogen-readiness” the new E3872 will be designed to accommodate a hydrogen (H2) admixture when operated with natural gas. www.engines.man.eu 32
