Generators and heat exchangers - NASA has proved these are Perseverance, nicknamed Percy, is a car-sized Mars rover designed to explore the Jezero crater on Mars as part of NASA’s Mars 2020 It is scheduled to land on Mars on The electricity needed to operate NASA’s Mars 2020 rover is provided by a power system called a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator, or MMRTG. The MMRTG has been inserted into the aft end of the rover between panels featuring gold tubing - these are the heat exchangers. Essentially a battery, an MMRTG uses the heat from the natural radioactive decay of plutonium-238 to generate about 110 watts of electricity at the start of a mission. Besides generating useful electrical power, the MMRTG EXCHANGER IS AMONG produces heat. Some of this heat can be used to maintain the rover’s systems at the proper operating temperatures in the frigid cold of space and on the surface of Mars. Some of it is rejected into space via the rover’s Heat Rejection System. The gold-coloured tubing on the heat exchangers forms part of the cooling

Radioisotope fuel is inserted into the MMRTG at the DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory before the MMRTG is shipped to the launch site. The nickel-alloy heat exchanger is among several that were 3D printed for the Mars Oxygen carried aboard the Perseverance Mars rover. If conventionally fabricated, the heat exchanger would have required making two parts and welding them together; the 3D-printed heat exchanger is a single piece. climate challenges we face today. alternatives is a priority because overall energy consumption and the need for infrastructure continues to grow, with an anticipated 48% growth by 2040. As regulators look towards imposing more restriction to encourage environmentally friendly solutions, stakeholders in the energy supply chain should be taking this opportunity to get ahead of the game before the rules change. 4. Support low-carbon activities and innovation The development of new technologies and business models is a major driver of economic growth. stimulus packages should also support the creation and implementation of new solutions which are both sustainable and might offer the UK a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. Over the next few years, governments should look towards implementing new regulations in order to create demand at scale for new products. This could include solutions such as sustainable aviation fuels mandates, lifecycle emissions regulations on cars and buildings and hydrogen blending mandates for heating networks. 5. The rise of affordable battery storage Batteries play a key role in enabling companies to embrace clean, low-cost, renewable energy at a higher level. Like the falling prices of solar equipment, the cost of lithium ion-based storage systems is expected to decrease dramatically over the next few years. This is a game changer as corporate buyers can maximise their energy investments, while contributing to the clean energy transition. As we move into 2021, by developing an efficiency and sustainable energy strategy, businesses can be sure that whatever the future brings, they will be ahead of the curve.

Within the field of power generation, be it Nuclear, Gas or Coal fired power stations to Hydro-electric plant and Solar Energy Farms, HYDAC products are present and integrated as essential parts of the operational systems. Within the 500KW to 14MW generation market, HYDAC’s business initially began within the field of Gas turbine lube oil cooling systems, and remains an area that they specialise today. As the renewable energy markets emerged and expanded - where fluid power requirements also complimented the HYDAC product portfolio – this also became a key growth area. Today, HYDAC boasts over 60,000 Cooling Systems installations within Wind Turbine systems alone, supported by high quality lubrication filtration systems, accumulator technology, and a host of other sub-systems, components and services. If we continue the focus on cooling, which became part of HYDAC’s product portfolio over 40 years ago, the radiator technology they produce today is 100% aluminium. The manufacturing processes utilised within their three modern radiator plants are unique, producing what is considered one of the most thermally efficient and robust varieties of all aluminium air blast radiators available. Mix this with a strong team of engineers, with many years’ experience within the field of power generation and R&D of large scale engines, a great recipe to successfully realise modern cooling systems required by today’s demanding applications results.
With ever increasing efforts to minimise failure modes within the Cooling Systems of Diesel and Gas Powered generator sets, especially within Mission critical applications, HYDAC cooling technology offers increased levels of system integrity – improving overall reliability. Additionally, the increased power density the HYDAC product provides presents a number of valuable advantages: Product development has focused on solutions that include increased operational efficiency through minimising parasitic losses and sound level emissions. In many cases this is achieved through electrically powered variable speed control ventilation systems, or alternatively compact hydraulic drive systems – another area of expertise for HYDAC - are available and can also offer comprehensive advantages. While HYDAC earned a reputation for the supply of high performance and quality products, their commitment to listen to their customer’s future needs and requirements, and evolve their products and technology to meet these, is where HYDAC stands ahead of the crowd as a true ‘engineering solutions provider’. Supported by intensive R&D programmes across all products divisions and state of the art manufacturing facilities Globally, HYDAC have products for today and tomorrow. Hydac are thrilled to be part of the AMP association, and are preparing to showcase more of their associated technologies over the course of future issues encompassing all areas indicated. www.hydac.co.uk
Given the advantages HYDAC COOLING offers, it is of little surprise that HYDAC radiators are successfully installed within containerised Genset solutions, remote cooling banks, limited areas of installation, noise sensitive locations and applications where performance levels were difficult to meet with conventional technologies. Should consideration be required for increased corrosion protection levels, or installations within hazardous areas, HYDAC has all bases covered.

other, healthcare operators are thinking hard about their back up power. Here Bradley transportation systems, explains the engineering considerations when upgrading hospital backup generators. Healthcare power is mission critical - a continuous power source is necessary to power everything from mechanical ventilators in intensive care, to medical imaging equipment and even the lighting and lifts needed for safe movement around the building. Diesel generators are a popular choice for hospitals several engineering considerations at play dictating facility. Size matters
consideration is generator size - the backup generator must be able to provide enough power to keep all required equipment running. A genset package should be designed in line with the includes being correctly sized to meet performance requirements. There are also tools available to help with choosing the right genset size, including SpecSizer, a the facility’s load. There are, however, multiple ways of achieving the same power output. In many facilities, a custom package is the best option, as healthcare operators can choose technology that achieves cost savings, is
Power density is a measure of the size of a genset compared with its cant work by engine manufacturers. Standard hospital generators have increased from 2.5MVA to 3.0MVA, a considerable improvement. Gensets are designed with two main cooling options — the most popular is a custom genset mounted radiator sized to suit the application and environment; the second is a remote radiator located separately, for example on the roof. However, the room must have enough ventilation to cool the engine down, to prevent overheating maximum engine room temperature typical generator. Many hospitals have small plant rooms where air important consideration Noise Engine noise can be a source of disturbance if not well managed. An acoustics specialist is best placed to perform a noise study and provide the details for acceptable noise levels to the engineering team. The engineers will then size the attenuators to make sure enough noise is absorbed. If required, lining the engine room with absorbing material as outlined by the design calculations will reduce the noise
site, which will dictate the size of fuel storage. Hospitals with limited space may require a custom design to be able to safely store this amount of fuel on site. It is also important to ensure that an appropriately sized fuel polishing system is included, to remove water, sediment and microbial contamination from the fuel and ensure that the generators are ready when they are needed. The genset provider should also secure a competitive, commercially viable and technically compliant generator packaging, including acoustics, enclosures and other plant room installations. The engineering team will also review the switchgear solution to check that it integrates with the wider site design and any legacy switchgear or equipment.
