A tidal energy pioneer, Nova Innovation, has won funding which could deliver the first ever tidal turbine array in Indonesia. Innovate UK has awarded £200k to Nova’s FLITE (Feasibility of Larantuka and Indonesian Tidal Energy) project that will deliver a feasibility study for a 7MW tidal array in Larantuka Strait. Larantuka Strait lies between the islands of Flores and Adonara and has one of the strongest tidal currents in Indonesia. The array would utilise Nova’s next generation 100kW tidal turbines – innovative, world-leading technology which has been powering homes and businesses in Shetland since 2016. FLITE is the first Asian project for Scottish-based Nova Innovation, who have teamed up with leading Indonesian University Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) to deliver the work. Simon Forrest, CEO of Nova Innovation, said: “Our goal is to kick-start the development of tidal stream as a sustainable and abundant energy source for countries across the world. “Indonesia is blessed with vast WE NOW HAVE A tidal energy resources which can FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR be harnessed to generate clean, predictable, sustainable energy A 7MW TIDAL ARRAY TO for the country. The country’s electricity grid is currently dominated by fossil fuels – coal, gas and oil – which together accounted for 83% of electricity generation in 2020. However the Indonesian Government has committed to increase renewable energy production by 2030, and the country’s abundant tidal energy resources provide the perfect opportunity to decarbonise its economy. Nova will partner with the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) to conduct on-site technical and socio-economic research supporting the business case for the tidal array. Bambang Pramujati, Vice Rector of the ITS, said: “The eastern region of Indonesia has the characteristics of an archipelago and abundant natural energy sources. The electricity supply system in this region has to deal with a variety of geographical factors, uneven population distribution and an uneven distribution of energy needs. “Collaborative research between ITS and Nova Innovation will deliver a feasibility study for a tidal energy array in the Larantuka strait with the aim of answering economic and technical feasibility issues and providing confidence for investors,” he concluded.

Last month Ansaldo Energia began work on the construction a next-generation combined cycle with a power of approximately 800 MW. As an EPC Contractor, Ansaldo Energia will be in charge of the full construction of the new production unit, from the foundations to the startup. At the heart of the combined cycle facility is a GT36 H-Class gas turbine, two generators and a steam turbine. All the components have been manufactured at Ansaldo Energia’s own production site. In addition, the agreement also provides for the maintenance of the turbine once the site is operational. “We are very proud that EP Produzione has chosen Ansaldo Energia for the upgrade and the efficiency of its Tavazzano and Montanaso plant,” said Giuseppe Marino, CEO of Ansaldo Energia. “We are making our top engineers available and providing our most innovative technology to guarantee EP Produzione a successful project. At the same time we are supporting Italy on its path towards the energy transition”. The GT36 H-Class gas turbine is the most powerful model ever made in Italy, and will provide the plant with greater flexibility and faster commissioning, both essential to provide the grid with an effective energy contribution if the share of renewable sources is not sufficient. “It is a great satisfaction to be able to start working on this project,” says Claudio Nucci, Chief Operating Officer of Ansaldo Energia. “We took the first steps of this collaboration during the difficult time of the pandemic, but we managed to reach this work start date on time, ready to support EP Produzione and work in full compliance with the agreed deadlines”. Between 600 and 700 employees are working on the site. To ensure the highest safety standards Ansaldo Energia and EP Produzione have collaborated on a rigorous safety campaign. Commercial operations for the plant have been scheduled for November 1st, 2023.

5,000KVA OF BACKUP POWER SYSTEMS REQUIRED IN SOUTH AFRICA DATA CENTRE CONTRACT AJ Power and Perkins joined forces to provide the 5000 kVA of backup power required by a data centre in South Africa to safeguard business continuity and keep data flowing 24/7. Energy reliability is a critical element for data centre operations. The reputation and resilience of any data centre relies on having a constant supply of power which enables customers’ data and IT infrastructure to remain up and running - with zero disruption. To meet the needs of this particular power-hungry site in Cape Town, AJ Power built and supplied two Perkins-powered AJ2500 generating sets from its largest 9 Series range. Operating in a dual redundancy arrangement, the two sets - each fitted with a Perkins® 4016-61TRG3 - could provide a total of 5,000 kVA of backup power needed to support a new segment of the building’s electrical load at any time the local grid might go down. After a formal tender process to find the right power supplier, the data centre put its faith in highly regarded local generating set distributor and manufacturer FGW Generators, and a UK firm AJ Power to solve their issue – and provide 5000 kVA of standby power. As the project got underway, AJ Power had some challenges to overcome. “Considering the size of the project, the customer had a very tight lead time of a matter of months,” says Andrew Pigott, business development manager at AJ Power. “Other factors to consider were limited space onsite, a requirement to adequately suppress noise, and significant access issues due to an awkward roadside location. “In the end the generating sets had to be lifted over a row of large trees, and then dropped into a compact room to complete the installation, with no problems.”

HIGH HORSEPOWER DIESEL GENSETS NOW APPROVED FOR USE WITH HYDROTREATED VEGETABLE OIL FUEL IN RENEWABLE ENERGY 1ST Cummins Inc. is now marketing a new line of diesel generator sets for use with paraffinic fuels (EN15940), including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), when used in standby applications. This announcement comes as part of Cummins overall commitment to develop innovative solutions that enable decarbonization, and proactively advance the company’s current technology to achieve industry leading emissions. “Our customers are continuously making advances towards decarbonisation and Cummins is committed to helping them achieve their sustainability goals. The ability to run generator sets on HVO fuel supports these goals by lowering their carbon footprint.” said Vipul Tandon, Executive Director, Global Power Generation. HVO is derived from the same feedstocks used to produce biodiesel, however, it is produced via a hydrotreated process vs. transesterification process, which helps improve its oxidation stability. It has a very low life cycle carbon emission, making it attractive as a sustainable fuel. Constituent emissions are equivalent to or lower than they are with diesel, and existing emissions data sheets and EPA Tier 2 certifications apply while operating generator sets on HVO. It is not prone to bacterial growth making it suitable for applications that require extended fuel storage.

NEW ROADMAP ESTABLISHED TO DECARBONISE UAE ALUMINIUM GIANT Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, and GE Gas Power are to develop a roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions come from the operation of EGA’s existing GE natural gas turbines. The issues will be overcome by exploring hydrogen as a fuel, as well as carbon capture, utilisation, and storage solutions. A memorandum of understanding was signed by Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, and Joseph Anis, President & CEO of GE Gas Power Europe, Middle East, and Africa. EGA has 33 GE natural gas turbines at Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah, with a total power generation capacity of 5,200 megawatts. Electricity generation accounts for a significant proportion of EGA’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The MoU between EGA and GE is in line with the

ambitions of the UAE Government’s Hydrogen Leadership Roadmap, unveiled earlier last month in Glasgow during COP26. The roadmap will include development of a strategy to support low-carbon industries to contribute towards the achievement of the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The MoU is the first GE Gas Power has entered globally to help explore potential solutions to lower the carbon footprint of power generation operations in the aluminium sector. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

IN BRIEF LANDFILL GAS BONUS FOR SOUTH AFRICA

ENERGY MINISTER REVEALS AUSTRALIA HAS JUST FIVE WEEKS’ SUPPLY OF ADBLUE LEFT

On December 10th, 2021, Australian officials announced that stockpiles of additive urea, a main ingredient of AdBlue, are running low around the world after China banned exports in a bid to contain fertiliser prices - a key component of food production. This could affect the region’s generator sector. Selective Catalytic Reduction for gensets (also know as SCR) will reduce NOx emissions by combining exhaust gases with the reductant AdBlue (a type of urea) and passing it over a catalyst. AdBlue is 32% ammonia dissolved in purified water. It is handled in diluted form as it is much less harmful. When AdBlue passes over the SCR catalyst, a chemical reaction happens which converts nitrogen oxides into less harmful nitrogen, water and sometimes carbon dioxide, which is then expelled through the exhaust. It’s called ‘Selective’ because the process specifically targets NOx. The reaction is known as ‘Reduction’ because the AdBlue is a reducing agent, converting the NOx into nitrogen, water and CO2. Modern diesel engines won’t start unless AdBlue has been added to the exhaust system to reduce the levels of nitric oxide pollution, posing a real problem for generator sets and delivery trucks alike. Now Energy Minister Angus Taylor has admitted Australia’s existing supplies were likely to run out by the middle of January and has appointed a former Donald Trump adviser to help devise a solution. Service stations are now running low on stock and are banning customers from panicbuying more AdBlue than they need as Australia’s only urea maker, Incitec Pivot, prepares to cease production next year. Mr Taylor’s office released a statement revealing Australia had 15million litres left of AdBlue in storage ‘which is equivalent to close to five weeks of business-as-usual demand’. Urea is commonly used as a fertiliser but a more refined version is added to diesel engines to reduce nitric oxide exhaust fumes This diesel exhaust fluid is marketed in Australia as AdBlue containing 32% urea and 68% deionised water The product, injected into the exhaust system, is currently used in gensets, diesel cars as well as construction and farming machinery. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

South Africa’s first independent landfill gas-to-power project in Johannesburg is already providing 3MW of renewable electricity p.a. This is enough to supply more than 5,500 homes. Project developer ENERGY Systems began its operations at the project six years ago. The gas is extracted from the Robinson Deep landfill site in Johannesburg. ENERGY Systems is a majority shareholder in the investment project, together with state-owned Central Energy Fund, and Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment company Secure Rock Enterprises. Seven facilities now produce around 11MW of renewable energy, which reduce the city’s carbon footprint by approximately 459,034 metric tonnes per year by replacing electricity generated from fossil fuels. This carbon-dioxide saving equates to removing more than 153,000 cars from the roads, or the carbon-dioxide which would be offset by a 434,524 acre forest bigger in size than Johannesburg itself. This is South Africa’s first and only landfill gas generation to achieve success in the Department of Energy’s Renewable Electricity Independent Power Procurement Programme.

AGGREKO REGISTERS RECORD 2 GW OF LIVE GLOBAL GAS POWER CAPACITY, AND GROWTH IN FLARE AND STRANDED GAS TO POWER PROJECTS Aggreko, a leading global provider of mobile, modular power, temperature control and energy services, has announced that it has exceeded a record of 2GW of live gas generation capacity. A key driver for achieving this milestone is increased demand for flare gas to power projects, as well as Aggreko’s innovative approach to monetising stranded gas assets. With a global focus on flaring reduction spearheaded by initiatives such as the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFR), Aggreko has emerged as a global leader in flare gas to power generation solutions. To date, the company has delivered more than 210 projects worldwide, including an offshore project in Indonesia which harnessed flare gas to generate 27 weeks of reliable power supply for an offshore microgrid. In the Middle East, Aggreko is currently delivering a project which is repurposing 40 million standard cubic feet of APG per day, reducing the operator’s flaring by a third and saving 840 tonnes of carbon emissions daily. Aggreko has used its expertise in modular gas-to-power solutions in innovative ways. Examples include three North American cryptocurrency mining projects, where Aggreko provided the miners with a reliable source of low-cost flare gas to power for their bitcoin mining operations. These projects avoided carbon emissions in a sector which has previously received global criticism for its energy demands and questions about its sustainability.

IN BRIEF CRESTCHIC EXPANDS ITS MANUFACTURING FOOTPRINT BY 60% WÄRTSILÄ BEGINS WORK ON SECOND-LARGEST ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM IN AUSTRALIA AGL Energy and Wärtsilä have begun work on the Torrens Island Battery facility, a250 MW/250 MWh system. It is the first project in an 850 MW network of gridscale batteries to be built by 2024. The Torrens Island battery is AGL Energy’s first grid-scale storage project. It will be built at the company’s gas plant, where it will continue to provide electricity as the fossil-fuel run turbines are retired. The $180 million project will be the largest system to operate in voltage sourcing mode in the world and support the integration of renewable energy on the South Australian grid. said Andrew Tang, Vice President, Energy Storage & Optimisation, Wärtsilä, said: “Wärtsilä is excited to break ground on the Torrens Island battery, which marks the beginning of an ambitious and important undertaking by AGL to deploy 850 MW of grid-scale energy storage. “Energy storage will play a key role in Australia’s transition from conventional fossil fuels to 100 percent renewable energy, and Wärtsilä looks forward to continuing our relationship with AGL to deploy these technologies at scale.” The project will be the second biggest energy storage plant in Australia and will enable the storage of both thermal and renewable energy. With AGL producing 20% of Australia’s total electricity, battery storage is expected to play a key role in ensuring the reliability of the grid during peak periods. This means that electricity can be stored during times when demand is low for use during peak periods. The storage system will operate initially in grid-following mode before switching at a later date to grid-forming mode - virtual synchronous generation- VSG - making it the largest energy storage solution capable of operating in this mode. Energy storage will also enable the utility to expand its complete portfolio of renewable energy.

GENERATOR SETS MARKET - GROWTH, TRENDS, COVID-19 IMPACT, AND FORECASTS (2021 - 2026)

W

orldwide the the generator sets market is segmented by capacity (below 75 kVA, 75-350 kVA, and Above 350 kVA), end user (Residential, Commercial, and Industrial), application (Standby Backup Power, Continuous Power, and Peak Shaving Power) and geography (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, and Middle-East and Africa). According to Mordor Intelligence (www.mordorintelligence.com) the generator sets market is expected to witness a CAGR of more than 5.5% during the period of 2020-2025 - details of this are revealed in its latest report GENERATOR SETS MARKET - GROWTH, TRENDS, COVID-19 IMPACT, AND FORECASTS (2021 - 2026). Factors, such as the ever-increasing demand for power, lack of reliable grid infrastructure, the need for emergency backup power solutions, and the demand for steady power supply, are driving the generator sets market, says Mordor. Moreover, the growing energy demands from the burgeoning manufacturing industry are expected to provide greater market opportunities for generators. However, factors, such as high installation and operating costs and the consumer preference towards eco-friendly alternatives (solar, fuel cells, etc.), and overcapacity, are restraining the market’s growth. Below 75 kVA capacity generators are estimated to have the largest market share during the forecast period, supported by the increase in demand from telecom, retail, other commercial buildings, and residential sectors. The commercial and industrial sectors of emerging economies, the residential sector of developed economies, and the increasing need for power in defense operations are expected to create significant opportunities for market participants in the near future. Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest share in the market in 2018, with the majority of the demand coming from countries, such as China and India. Mordor’s analysts says that gensets below 75 kVA will dominate the market Less than or equal to 75 kVA diesel generators are used in the telecom sector, commercial complexes, small restaurants, small-scale industries, and petrol stations, among others, primarily as backup power in grid-connected the main power source in off-grid areas. The purchase of small generators is mostly based on price and requirement rather than efficiency, as they offer emergency backup power. The unreliable and limited power access, especially in rural areas, has been the major reason for the high

THE GENERATOR SET SECTOR IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION IS EXPECTED TO HOLD THE LARGEST MARKET AND IS EXPECTED TO DOMINATE IN PROFIT TERMS UP TO 2026 AND BEYOND. demand for low capacity generators. The demand for small generators in range 0-75 kVA is increasing drastically, with the change in the commercial sector landscape, especially in the developing countries of Asia-Pacific and Africa. India has close to 450,000 telecom towers, facilities which require a continuous power supply. Since 0-75 kVA diesel generators are used in the telecom sector for backup power in grid-connected areas, and as the main power source in off-grid areas, the generator sets market is expected to grow exponentially. The building and construction market is on the rise in India and China, due to current government initiatives such as smart cities and green building initiatives, which are expected to create the demand for portable generators during the forecast period.,

and, in turn, drive the generator sets market. The generator sets market in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to hold the largest market and is expected to dominate the market up to 2026. China is the leading generator sets market in the Asia-Pacific region, due to area’s increasing infrastructure projects, widening power demand-supply gap, expansion of manufacturing facilities across the nation, and rising commercial office spaces. The country benefits from the cost and effectiveness of diesel generators, with improved living standards increasing the demand for power back-up devices. In addition, the rapid growth in various end-use sectors will also spur the demand for generators sets in India. where increasing power blackouts have caused problems.

DELIVERING A GAS POWER PLANTS TO NIGERIA CUTS COSTS & REDUCES CARBON EMISSIONS

F

or Aspira Nigeria Ltd, which is part of Lee Group of Companies (the second highest employer in Kano after the state government), its most daunting challenge in keeping its equipment running used to be frequent power cuts until it turned to gas power generation. Sami Jafaar, MD of Aspira Nigeria Ltd, said that the two main problem the company faced were fluctuating diesel prices and the subsequent pollution cauSed by diesel fuel - including increased carbon emissions. The latter left the factory facility dirty and forced him to look for alternatives. Under his direction Aspira Nigeria Ltd took a key step and turned to Clarke Energy, a multinational specialist in engineering, installation, and maintenance of distributed power generation solutions, to install a gas power plant. Clarke Energy delivered the entire power plant solution which included its designs, technical drawings, engines, installation, commissioning. It also provides provides maintenance for the equipment. Thanks to Clarke Energy’s expertise the plant is currently powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) delivered to the facility. Aspira is one of the earliest companies to adopt this mode of power generation and says it has seen huge benefits on account of the switch to gas Jafaar said that apart from reduced cost, a key benefit of the gas plant is that it has virtually eliminated downtime due to power cuts and damage to some sensitive factory equipment. Another company based in Nigeria, the Mamuda Group, one of the largest manufacturing groups in Northern Nigeria also recently turned to Clarke Energy to resolve its energy issues. The Mamuda group was keen to ramp up its production and diversify its product lines on the

strength of its ability to generate power onsite. According to the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, over 40 percent of the cost of business of most manufacturing companies goes into power, therefore companies which can generate its own power at cost-effective rates has a competitive edge. “We already forecasted our power consumption for the near future and have decided to go for an in-house power generation plant that will help us to reduce the load on the grid so that others can benefit from it,” said Nemr Hammoud, Vice Chairman & COO, Mamuda Group of Companies. The Mamuda Group currently has a 22MW power plant capacity which it is seeking to upscale to 30MW installed and maintained by Clarke Energy, a multinational specialist in engineering, installation, and maintenance of distributed power generation solutions. Hammoud said Clarke Energy designed the power solution from technical drawing, engine delivery, installation, commissioning and even maintenance of the equipment. “Clark Energy has been very competent and reliable by providing solutions to

our energy problems,” he comments. He said the benefits have been enormous - cost savings have made the company’s product competitive in the market. It has reduced carbon emissions and guaranteed uninterrupted power which bodes well given the sensitive nature of the factory machines. Yiannis Tsantilas, Managing Director of Clarke Energy in Nigeria said: “The leaders at the Mamuda Group are visionaries. They have keyed into the FG’s renewed gas push and investments in the gas value chain to increase industrialisation in the northern part of Nigeria. They have invested in a 22 megawatts power plant and an upscale to 30 megawatts (MW) in the later phase of the project. “This demonstrates their commitment to improving productivity and expansions that will transform the region into a manufacturing hub for affordable and export-ready products.” Hammoud concludes:.“We have a longterm agreement with one of the largest LNG companies in Nigeria, who are able to sustain our gas needs by trucking to our sites.” www.clarke-energy.com

ALTERNATORS

DECEMBER 2021

KEY ALTERNATORS USED IN GENSETS AT POTATO POINT & CAPE HINCHBROOK, ALASKA

F

rontier Power has partnered with Silver Mountain Construction to provide electrical power to an extremely remote location off the coast of Alaska. Gensets powered by KUBOTA engines were supplied and these were fitted with special alternators from STAMFORD. Specified were 10 STAMFORD 12KW S0L2-G1 alternators, together with 4 STAMFORD 24KW S0L2-M1 units. The system is monitored remotely and a hybrid unit has been installed to charge batteries for GPS equipment. Frontier Power is an original equipment manufacturer which provides power solutions to the Western Canada region, serving a variety of challenging applications. They are considered to be a leader in offering customised solutions. Last year Frontier Power partnered with Silver Mountain Construction to provide electric power to a remote location off the coast of Alaska. They chose STAMFORD® alternators as part of the solution for its durability and performance. The gensets, powered by propane Kubota engines were paired with solar and wind renewable energy to provide cleaner emissions and an environmentally friendly power solution. In these kinds of locations it is critical to have equipment which requires low maintenance and which can be relied upon to provid long-lasting, reliable performance. Frontier Power packaged the gensets with long run oil systems to reduce the number of service trips to the remote location, thus reducing cost for the customer. To ensure longevity Frontier Power equipped the gensets with STAMFORD® alternators and a DC control panel to provide reliable configuration and a remote monitoring system. These gensets and the renewable energy sources are the only sources of power in these remote locations. This hybrid system provides power to charge the battery that in-turn powers the GPS system.

www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

A spokesman for Silver Mountain Construction commented: “With vast experience in building custom design package solutions for various applications over the years, Frontier was the partner of choice for us. They did not hesitate to choose STAMFORD® alternators for the highly durable specification needed.” Given the remote location and the harsh environment it presents, there were key challenges which had to be overcome by the customer, mainly in the installation process. Alaska offers some unique weather challenges. Some of the hottest and coldest temperatures in Alaska occur around the area near Fairbanks. The summers can have temperatures reaching into the 90s °F (near 34 °C), while in the winter, the temperature can fall below −50 °F (−45.6 °C), and in rare cases, below −60 °F (−51.1 °C). In the case of Frontier Power all the components for the gensets were shipped on a series of transports and carried by a helicopter piece-by-piece to reach the operation site during periods of good weather. All 14 x STAMFORD® S0L2 alternators were delivered as part of this project, which has a further 3 years until completion in 2025. STAMFORD industrial alternators

meet the requirements of IEC EN 60034 and the relevant section of other international standards such as BS5000, VDE 0530, NEMA MG1-32, IEC34, CSA C22.2-100 and AS1359. Alternators are manufactured using production procedures having a quality assurance level to BS EN ISO 9001. Utilising wire-wound technology and with an output extending from 7.5 to 5,000kVA, genuine STAMFORD® alternators are designed for delivering superior efficiencies in marine, oil and gas auxiliary, UPS, telecoms, CHP, construction and other continuous or standby power applications. STAMFORD® alternators are available with a choice of SAE adaptors to ensure easy coupling to a wide range of prime movers. All STAMFORD® S-Range is fitted with CoreCooling™ Technology. CoreCooling is the name STAMFORD first attributed to a suite of advanced technologies implemented across the S-Range of products. The patented technologies target performance and have enabled the company to make significant changes on both current and future products. www.stamford-avk.com

A COLLABORATION: T15U GENERATOR, WITH A U.S. EPA TIER 4 24 HORSEPOWER 404F ENGINE

T

aylor Power Systems, based in Clinton, Mississippi, creates prime and standby power generators that keep critical systems running and help save lives when natural disasters strike. The generators they design and manufacture keep the power on for everything from municipalities to nursing homes, oil and gas companies, commercial farms and hospitals. Taylor Power has collaborated with Perkins since its founding in 1986 to ensure that their generators are completely dependable on both the best and worst days imaginable. They know they can go directly to the Perkins team to help conquer the proverbial outsidethe-box challenges—like when leading fruit and produce companies asked Taylor Power to bring a semi-vintage model of intermodal generator, with an unparalleled history of reliability, back to market. The Taylor Power team worked alongside the Perkins team, resulting in the T15U generator, with a U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final 24 horsepower Perkins® 404F engine with a practically unheard-of service interval of 3,000 hours. Agriculture is another significant market for Taylor Power, which means there are many poultry farms across the country that have generators equipped with Perkins engines. A typical chicken farm holds between 36,000-50,000 birds, so if the power fails in the summer and the Taylor Power generator didn’t kick in, the loss could be catastrophic. “The generators in the agriculture market are protecting the livelihood of farmers,” said Thomas Culpepper, Taylor manager of product design and development said. “In some instances, poultry farmers don’t want anything else. They insist on a Perkins engine.” Since the company’s founding in 1986, Taylor Power has partnered with Perkins to ensure that their generators are completely dependable on both the best and worst days imaginable. The designers and engineers at Taylor Power also know they can go directly to the Perkins team to help conquer the proverbial outside-thebox challenges - like when leading fruit and produce companies asked Taylor Power if they could bring a semi-vintage model of intermodal generator back to market because it had an unparalleled history of reliability. In determining exactly how to customize the product to meet the client’s specific application, the Taylor Power team worked alongside the Perkins team, resulting in the T15U generator, with a U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final 404F engine capable of 24 horsepower with a practically unheard-of service interval of 3,000 hours.

24

WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER

The Taylor Power crew also didn’t hesitate to invite Perkins factory engineers to the table when they decided they needed to craft a 750kilowatt standby-power generator to address a massive gap in their offerings. To help bring the Taylor designers’ vision to life, Perkins expanded the capabilities of the 18-litre, Perkins® 2806, with increased power density, to now support up to 750 kWe output, while also improving the air filtration system to allow service from either side. This brand new TD750 generator also has a smaller footprint and is competitive on price. Final reviews are still being made about the new addition to the Taylor Power family, but once it’s officially market-ready, it’ll be capable of powering large office complexes, data centres, hotels, municipalities and medical facilities. “We’re really excited about this,” Thomas said. “The sales department’s energised, and we have people on the shop floor that don’t normally work in R&D that are asking to work on this project. There’s a lot of buzz in the building about it.” Specifics on the Perkins® 2806C-E18TAG engine The Perkins 2800 Series is a family of well-proven 6-cylinder, 18-litre in-line diesel engines, designed to address today’s uncompromising demands within the power generation industry with particular aim at the standby market sector. wisstek Aluminium, one of the most important industrial businesses in Sri Lanka, recently purchased the 4M10G110/5 model BAUDOUIN engine EGK225-80N model with an EMSA alternator. This ultra-reliable 110 kVa diesel generator set is manufactured by EMSA. The set was specified in particular as it was deemed capable of meeting all the needs of the Swisstek Aluminium facility. The genset has been designed so that unit will automatically commission should a power cut occur. Its presence means the product line will never be halted by any outage and that the work tempo will continue. The engine block of the generator is the work of Baudouin, a manufacturer with 100 years of know-how and EMSA has used its own brand as the alternator. The set has a number of key features, such as easy maintenance and a remote troubleshooting option which means that any failure can be resolved quickly and easily. The 110 kVa diesel generator can be used to provide auxiliary power when there is grid energy infrastructure available. This enables the generator to be ready for use when extra energy is needed in addition to power cuts. Additionally, the electric voltage regulator in the generator will protect the interior generator components from energy fluctuations. The cabin provides an industry-type silencer and isolation. These features have been designed to inhibit noisy operation. In a recent contract generators manufactured by EMSA will be used in the Eğribel Pass infrastructure which - once completed - will be the third-longest tunnel in Turkey and one of the most important locations on the Giresun and Sivas route. EMSA’s gensets witll form the foundation of the energy infrastructure for Eğribel Pass which is expected to be completed in 2022. The generators have been particularly specified for a 5.9 km-long project involving two tunnels. The tunnels will connect the East Black Sea region with Central Anatolia and southern regions. EMSA reports that it has prepared and transferred gensets with the following specifications: 12M33G1400/5 model Baudouin engine EG400-1000N model with a EMSA alternator. These 1400 kVA diesel generator sets will be installed and comissioned in Eğribel Pass project. The gensets have been manufactured under ISO 90012015, ISO 14001-2015, ISO 45001-2018 and ISO 10022006 management system certificates. They effectively meet the highest nternational standards. The Baudouin engine in the generator set is preferred for heavy-duty products like these genset. The engine has been proved to work well in a heavy-duty

environment such as Eğribel Pass. The alternator features a selfwarning system and the alternator coils have insulated varnish to protect against oil and acid attack. The installed voltage regulator also protects against current fluctuations and ensures stable current operation during the service life. Akarteks of Turkey, an important manufacturer in the textile sector, has also chosen EMSA generators. Akarteks is keen minimise any downtime in its manufacturing facilities due to outages has specified the BF6M1015CP-LAGG3A model Deutz engine EGK315-320N model (with an Emsa alternator). This model of 440 kVA diesel generator sets manufactured by EMSA will support manufacturing and decrease time loss thanks to its remote intervention, noise insulation and water-cooling properties. In addition, the generator can also be used as for auxiliary power when there is grid energy infrastructure offering a standby power mode. One other key property of this particular generator is this: it directly warns the user of low fuel levels and enable a timely intervention. In another high-profile contract, EMSA Generator sets will be used in the Bioengineer Faculty at Istanbul University. Three generators have already been delivered to a

28,000 sqm area currently under construction. The three 12M33G1400/5 model Baudouin engine units - EG4001000N (with an EMSA alternator) 1400 kVA diesel engine sets ensure that the education program and scientific activities in the faculty will continue uninterrupted. The gensets are contained inside a noise insulation cabin for low noise operation and have been manufactured according to 2000/14/ EC directive, providing up to 400 kW power. Today, EMSA generators are present on 6 continents and in 102 countries. When the company started its journey 40 years ago EMSA aimed to be a global brand. The brand has certainly managed to achieve this, being already involved in some the largest projects in Turkey. www.emsa.gen.tr

HYDROGEN-BASED SUBSTATION BACKUP POWER SOLUTION WITH EXTENDED RUNTIME

G

enCell Energy, a leading manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell energy solutions, has announced the release of the GenCell REX™, a hydrogen-based substation backup power solution with the X factor - eXtended runtime. The GenCell REX, an upgrade to the GenCell G5rx™, produces emission-free auxiliary electricity for substations during outages that supplements or replaces legacy backup battery systems having limited duration backup power. Offering an immediate injection of power which keeps circuit breaker “auto reclosers” operational until grid recovery, the GenCell REX complies with today’s more stringent regulations - says the manufacturer - requiring that utilities reinforce their backup power in response to the higher risks of power outages caused by the increasingly frequent and severe climate-related weather events affecting Europe. Based on field experience deploying the utility backup solution at dozens of sites in the Americas, GenCell has enhanced the REX solution with three configurations: 130VDC, 48 VDC and an integrated solution offering a dual output of both 130/48VDC in a single unit. This allows the GenCell REX to concurrently support critical substation loads, internal communications and SCADA systems that monitor the utilities’ operations. Furthermore, the enhanced REX solution improves functionality of the GenCell Remote IoT Manager software. by providing improved visibility of the equipment via additional data points that can be accessed by monitoring systems. “GenCell is proud to be a part of ENLIT Europe, an event that is addressing every aspect of Europe’s energy transition,” reports Rami Reshef, CEO GenCell Energy. “Within the Hydrogen Europe Zone that is highlighting hydrogen’s huge growth potential within this energy transition, GenCell offers European utilities resilient, weather-resistant, and emission-free backup solutions that meet the requirement to withstand increasingly severe weather conditions while also complying with increasingly strict sustainability requirements.” Reshef comments: “EU Commission regulations for the network code on electricity emergency and restoration obligate TSOs and service providers to maintain sufficient equipment redundancy and backup power supply sources for their communication systems

28

to have a minimum backup power capacity of higher than 24 hours. Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/2196 stipulates that each TSO shall arrange a backup power supply for its backup control room of at least 24 hours in case of loss of primary power supply. “Hydrogen fuel cells are the ideal means to provide utilities with reliable long-duration backup power and GenCell is pleased to bring its experience in the Americas to meet the needs of European TSOs and power providers.” As countries and companies around the world increasingly look to hydrogen as a clean energy pathway, GenCell is uniquely well-positioned to take a leadership role in the emerging national and international hydrogen economy. Upon winning a tender and successfully supplying 37 GenCell G5rx backup power units to CFE the state-owned utility of Mexico, CFE then exercised their option to double the order to 74 units; GenCell Energy successfully deployed its revolutionary A5 off-grid solution for satisfactory 24/7 powering of a Neyðarlínan ohf Emergency Communication System (ECS) in Iceland for 1500 consecutive hours. Douglas PUD, the Douglas County Public Utility District in the State of Washington signed a contract to deploy the GenCell G5™ backup power solution to run on renewable hydrogen produced by the PUD’s own hydrogen production facility. GenCell signed a framework agreement with Japanese conglomerate the TDK Corporation to support GenCell in developing a novel approach to green ammonia. GenCell also received a substantial

investment by a group of international institutional investors led by the world’s leading banking group BNP Paribas through its investment arm BNP Paribas Energy Transition Fund; The GenCell G5 backup power solution received a first-ever permit for a hydrogen fuel cell generator from the State of Israel’s Electric Authority; GenCell has affiliations with numerous industry associations, among these FCHEA, Hydrogen Europe and the Ammonia Energy Association as part of its program to participate in global hydrogen and fuel cell development projects; In September 2021 at the IWCE critical communications event in Las Vegas, following collaboration with leading global telecom providers, GenCell launched its compact, resilient and emission-free backup power solution the GenCell Backup Operations eXtender (BOX) designed specifically to meet the needs of the telecom industry; Looking to the future, GenCell reports that it is proactively developing its total green power solution from well-to-wheel. It welcomes partners to join in its vision of an emission-free distributed energy system based on green ammonia. As a blue and white fuel cell pioneer, in October 2021 GenCell celebrated National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day. The company is committed to lead the efforts to spur the growth of the hydrogen industry and raise public and consumer awareness of the benefits which fuel cell technologies and hydrogen energy provide in reducing emissions while driving economic growth. www.gencellenergy.com www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

EVOG RNMENT MUST LEVERAGE R P IVATE INVESTMENT TO STOP 10,000 ANNUAL DEATHS

The UK Government needs to leverage private investment in energy efficiency retrofits, grid flexibility and low carbon heat to help avoid the 10,000 annual deaths attributed to fuel poverty each year, says the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) on Fuel Poverty Awareness Day. Government must leverage private investment to stop 10,000 annual deaths. Fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA) states as many as four million UK households suffer from fuel poverty, which result in people being unable to afford to heat their homes. As the energy price crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic continue into the winter season, bringing with them increased physical, mental and financial risks for vulnerable households, government action needs to drive the adoption of the technologies that can help. Existing policies need to deliver on making capital investment into the key areas of green retrofits, heat networks and flexibility technologies easier – the finance is in many cases already available, but there is no easy way for it to be invested into infrastructure capable of tackling fuel poverty in the long term. Energy efficiency retrofits that could significantly reduce both fuel poverty and greenhouse gas emissions are in most cases bizarrely disincentivised with steep 20% VAT rates – the ADE calls on policymakers to make exemptions in this area to help bring the UK’s housing stock up to standard and to tackle climate change. By combining retrofits such as these with plentiful and affordable access to low carbon heat networks, we can solve both heat supply and demand for those in poverty.

restchic, a world leader in load bank design, manufacture and rental, has implemented a potentially life-saving suggestion from one of its long-standing employees to add some defibrillators at the workplace, Ben Woodward, a Senior Service Engineer at Crestchic’s headquarters in Burton on Trent, entered his suggestion into the company scheme that rewards employees for ideas that help improve health and safety and productivity, about having some easily accessible defibrillators placed on walls around the workshop. Ben said: “I’ve worked for Crestchic since 2002 and value them as an employer that cares about their workforce. I’ve noticed more and more defibrillators are available in public areas these days and thought it would be a good idea to have them available to use in the workshop. “Defibrillators can be a crucial item of equipment to help keep one of my fellow colleagues alive, should the occasion ever occur. My suggestion was picked up by the management team and I was given £100 for the idea, but I decided to give it back to my employer to allow them to purchase multiple units as this is far more important to me than the money.” According to the St. John’s Ambulance, Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are a portable life saving device that can give a casualty’s heart an electric shock, when it has stopped beating normally in a sudden cardiac arrest. A defibrillator works by checking the casualty’s heart rhythm once the defibrillator pads are placed on their chest and giving them a shock if needed. By using a defibrillator before an ambulance arrives, you can significantly increase someone’s chance of survival. Chris Caldwell, Managing Director at Crestchic, said: “We set up the employee suggestion scheme to help us identify where we can improve our business.

UPS BATTERIES GETS UPGRADE THANKS TO POWER CONTROL A long-standing customer, CBRE recently enlisted Power Control’s expertise for the replacement o,f two large sets of VRLA batteries which were at their end of life (EoL). These batteries are part of a backup power infrastructure containing two Pillar 1100kVA UPS installed in an N+N configuration, which is positioned to support key server equipment. A UPS failure during a power anomaly or complete power failure would have a profound effect on the day-to-day operation of the site. Following a site survey, Power Control recommended replacing the EoL strings with highly dependable Yuasa batteries. Knowing how much reliance is placed upon their backup infrastructure, Power Control wanted to ensure the company were completely satisfied with the recommended change and organised a tour of the Yuasa factory located in South Wales. The company were pleased with the Yuasa SWL4250 and during installation, Power Control was able to configure the 23+ tonne battery set to a far more cost-effective 12V solution. The engineer who completed the installation was a former Pillar Senior Engineer and adept in working with the installed UPS systems, reports the company. powercontrol.co.uk www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
