TRIGENERATION

TRIGENERATION SYSTEM FOR AN INTERNATIONAL MANUFACTURER OF MEDICAL PRODUCTS

Clinico Medical Sp. z o.o. in Błonie, Poland, is one of the largest production sites of the international Fresenius Kabi Group. Fresenius Kabi is a global healthcare company that specializes in lifesaving medicines and technologies for infusion, transfusion and clinical nutrition. Their products and services are used to help care for critically and chronically ill patients. More than 40,000 employees generated a turnover of around seven billion euros in 2020. Clinico Medical Sp. z o.o. manufactures disposable plastic products that are used to administer drugs and special food as well as for transfusion technology. In view of the high demand for cold water to cool the production machinery and the resulting high energy consumption for the cooling processes, the Polish MWM distributor Centrum Elektroniki Stosowanej CES Sp. z o.o. has once again installed an energetically and economically efficient trigeneration system.

Trigeneration for cooling the machines

The cooling processes for ventilating the facilities and cooling the production machinery require a lot of energy. To produce the cold required for the plant of Clinico Medical Sp. z o.o. more efficiently and at reduced cost, the decision was made to install a trigeneration system. Due to the high level of satisfaction with the work of Centrum Elektroniki Stosowanej ‘CES’ Sp. z o.o. in the past and the high quality MWM products, Fresenius Kabi decided to cooperate for the second time. The first was installed by Centrum Elektroniki Stosowanej CES Sp. z o.o. back in 2016. In this system, the heat recovered from the cogeneration process is transferred to an absorption chiller. In spring, summer, and autumn, the heat produced by the cogeneration system is used for producing cold temperatures. For this, the absorption chiller transforms the heat into cold water. The cold is split into two and distributed to the individual consumers in the plant according to their needs. In winter, late autumn, and early spring part of the heat from the cogeneration process is delivered to the plant’s heating system. The plant is operated with an MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas genset with an electrical output of 1,200 kW and a thermal output of 1,210 kW. The absorption chiller delivers 900 kW of cold. The MWM gas generator set runs on natural gas. Due to the plant expansion, the cooling demand had doubled by 2019. After two years of successful operation of the MWM generator set the decision was made to upsize the trigeneration system. Thus, Centrum Elektroniki Stosowanej CES Sp. z o.o., the official Polish MWM distributor, installed a second cogeneration power plant with another MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas genset with an electrical output of 998 kW and a thermal output of 1,126 kW. An absorption chiller with a cooling output of 845 kW was added. Together with the previously installed system, the trigeneration plant that went live in early 2020 fully covers the plant’s cooling demand.

MWM TCG 2020 V12 Gas Genset: Offers Enhanced Profitability, Longer Useful Life

The MWM TCG 2020 gas gensets are custom-tailored to the challenges of a dynamic market setting. The gas gensets in the output range from 1,000 to 2,000 kWel fulfill the elevated requirements of a broad application spectrum and ensure efficiency, reliability, flexibility, environmental compatibility, low TCO, and high profitability.

Successor with up to 18% more power

The MWM TCG 3020, successor model of the TCG 2020, generator set effectively balances efficiency and reliability. The genset delivers up to 18 percent more output than its predecessor, though its dimensions are almost the same. Additionally, the new model features long service intervals with up to 80,000 operating hours until the next general overhaul (if the gas quality is high) and a total efficiency of more than 87 percent (with natural gas). Owing to their high reliability and profitability, the TCG 3020 generator sets with an output of 1,380 to 2,300 kWel are ready for the challenges of Industry 4.0. Thanks to the use of the digital power plant control TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management), the gas gensets are able to reach their full performance for maximum plant availability, capacity, and usability.
