Millions of Australians have been warned about the risk of repeated power cuts after freezing temperatures and a national shortage of power create a perfect storm for the grid. Last week the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) was forced to intervene by ordering extra generators to come online to cover power shortages and warned of moreto come. A recent polar surge, which has brought freezing temperatures to most of Australia, has placed abnormal pressure on the power grid as Aussies blast their heaters and air-conditioning to stay warm. The increased pressure on the power grid has been compounded by unreliable coal power plants and generators powered down after AEMO ordered a price cap on soaring energy prices. Queensland and NSW THE AUSTRALIAN ENERGY residents were asked to conserve electricity supplies as MINISTER SAID THE MAIN further drops in temperature were being forecast. REASON BEHIND THE Victoria and South Australia are facing similar pressure on their POWER SCARCITY WAS power grids. The AEMO has issued a ‘lack of UNSCHEDULED reserve’ warning meaning the forecast demand was likely to outstrip BLACKOUTS AT COALsupply in Victoria. It predicted that power outages could be expected FIRED POWER STATIONS to occur because of because of unscheduled blackouts at power stations. The blackouts also coincide with reduced output from solar and wind farms in evening hours. Authorities are making efforts to revive outputs from coal-fired generators, Australia’s energy minister, Chris Bowen, has said, adding that New South Wales residents must conserve as much electricity as possible but not for essentials like heating. The energy minister said the main reason behind the power scarcity was unscheduled blackouts at specific coal-fired power stations due to scheduled maintenance and unexpected faults. Officials at the Australian Energy Market Operator said it was too soon to confirm resumption of normal operations in the market but added that power capacity reserves had improved in New South Wales. One of the three dysfunctional units at Australia’s Bayswater coal-fired plant in New South Wales is ‘already back online while another will be operational soon’, officials at Australia’s top power generator AGL Energy said.

POWEREX LIVE 2022 LONDON,UK: 8TH DECEMBER A TOP NETWORK EVENT The next PowerEx event has been announced for Thursday 8th December, 2022, at the prestigious Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, London. This is a very popular event aimed at four specific sectors: * gensets & their componentry (engines and alternators etc.) * CHP * distributed energy * data centres Dave Andrews, Chairman of the Claverton Energy Institute comments: “The global gas crunch is particularly bad news for the UK right now. Around half of the UK’s electricity is generated by burning fossil fuel in gas-fired power plants, a trend which has become more deeply entrenched over recent months after a string of problems in the UK electricity system. “Ageing nuclear power plants have been forced to undertake unplanned outages for maintenance, a main power cable used to import electricity from France shut down after a fire in 2021, and the UK’s wind turbines are experiencing an unprecedented .demand.” He points out: “These will be just some of the topics touched upon at this year’s PowerEx Live Show in London on December 8th. “The government’s policy of tough regulation on prices will collide with loose rules on which companies can join the market. This is also going to affect the power market at a time we can least afford it. Ar PowerEx power professionals will have the chance to network with experts in all fields of CHP, Data Centres & Renewable Energy. Exhibition space is limited so the organisers are allocating areas on a first-come-first served basis. Early bookings are recommended to avoid disappointment. Some recent confirmatory bookings for the December event include Bergen Engines, Fozmula, the MHM Group, BGG UK and Pillar, among others. www.powerexlive.co.uk

The 2022 Commonwealth Games start on 28th July and run through to 8th August, with Birmingham this year’s host city. The fleet of temporary equipment powering the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled, with over 120 items of kit tailored to help meet the host’s stringent environmental targets. The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games aims to make these the most sustainable Games yet. It is working closely with its partners, suppliers, and wider stakeholder to reduce its carbon footprint wherever possible. Central to this is the way the event is powered and as energy is a key part of the Games’ carbon footprint, focus has been given to driving emissions down. The Games are taking a ‘mains first’ approach, using the existing infrastructure from venues reducing reliance on additional generators, and where temporary energy is needed, working closely with Aggreko to drive emissions down. As the Official Modular Energy Solutions Supporter for Birmingham 2022, Aggreko is responsible for planning the temporary energy framework for all 15 of the Games’ venues. These include large-scale venues such as Alexander Stadium and Coventry Stadium & Arena, to greenfield sites of regional parks like Warwick and Sutton. They are also powering additional requirements in sites key to the Games, including the Birmingham 2022 Villages in Birmingham and Warwick and the remote vehicle security site. The fleet includes 117 of Aggreko’s latest Stage V generators from 30kVA up to 600kVa running on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) – a more sustainable fuel source. Stage V engines provide greater efficiency than traditional generators as well as reducing NOx emissions, CO2 emissions, and other harmful particulates. The acoustically designed equipment also results in a reduction of noise, considering the local surroundings of the venues. The generators will be operating in Load on Demand configuration, meaning they will replace a large, constantly operating generator with a group of smaller generators that can power up or down automatically according to demand onsite. To support the generator set-up, Aggreko will be supplying several batteries at 300 kVA. A specialist Y-Cube energy storage battery will be used in the fleet depot centre at the University of Birmingham to power the Games’ electric vehicles, says Aggreko..
US DOE GRANTS USD$500M COMMITMENT FOR ADVANCED STORAGE PROJECT IN UTAH, USA a conditional commitment to an Advanced Clean Energy Storage has be granted by the US Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Programs Office. hMitsubishi Power Americas, Magnum Development and Haddington Ventures will be given up to US$504.4 million in debt financing for the Advanced Clean Energy Storage Project, which represents the world’s largest industrial green hydrogen production and storage facility. IN BRIEF AMMONIA TEST AT HEKINAN THERMAL POWER STATION
Plans to test co-firing ammonia in a demonstration project at Hekinan Thermal Power Station have been announced by Japan’s IHI Corp. and the national power company JERA. The two companies have been conducting a demonstration project to establish technology for the large-volume co-firing of fuel ammonia at the power station. Ammonia enables efficient, low-cost transport and storage of hydrogen. In addition to this role as an energy carrier, it can also be used directly as a fuel in thermal power generation. The plan is to demonstrate an ammonia co-firing rate of 20% at the 1GW Unit 4 at JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station As a fuel that does not emit carbon-dioxide when burned, ammonia is expected to offer great advantages.
DEVELOPING A RANGE OF KEY ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTIONS IN ITALY Italian energy company Eni and Ansaldo Energia have joint plans to develop projects based on innovative technological solutions for electricity storage as an alternative to electrochemical batteries. The technologies, which are being studied and have already undergone Eni’s technology validation process, will be implemented at a number of industrial sites of Eni and its subsidiaries in Italy, exploiting the potential of existing power generation and consumption systems. Electricity storage is essential to overcome the structural limitations of renewables in terms of predictability and intermittency, says the company, and is consequently necessary to promote their development. “Renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic, are indispensable solutions for the success of the energy transition and Eni is devoting a great deal of effort and resources to grow rapidly in those areas and help overcome their structural and economic limitations due to their intermittency of production,” said Giuseppe Ricci, Eni’s Energy Evolution chief operating officer. “This agreement is part of our approach to the transition based on technological leadership, the know-how of our people and the ability to transform and evolve our industrial sites. These are fundamental elements to successfully tackle the significant challenges of decarbonisation.” Enipower, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eni, was established in November 1999. Enipower owns five power plants located in Brindisi, Ferrara, Mantua, Ravenna and Ferrera Erbognone (Pavia) .and a co-generation plant in Bolgiano.

FROM THE ARCTIC TO THE SAHARA, NEW SWITCHGEAR TESTING GOES EXTREME An innovative Climatic Test Chamber in Brno, Czech Republic, will be used to test all ABB energized indoor MV switchgear panels, to ensure they keep the power on 24/7 in the harshest of operating environments. ABB has invested €700,000 to create the state-of-the-art test facility, which is the first of its type in Europe. The chamber will simulate harsh climatic site conditions, from lows of minus 50 °C to temperature highs of up to 80 °C as well as pollution conditions. It will also test for 0-100% humidity and water condensation, all of which can cause switchgear to age faster. The enhanced testing, which can take from four to eight weeks to complete for each component, will take ABB’s switchgear beyond current standards, to comply with the new (IEC/TS 62271-304 from Class 1 to Class 4) regulation. It will improve the quality and reliability of ABB’s energised MV indoor switchgear solutions when operating in the most extreme climatic site conditions and polluted environments, to reduce failures and unplanned downtime at customer sites. Martin Stefanka, ABB’s Global Technology Manager for Distribution Solutions said: “Our new Climatic Test Chamber will help us to understand the limits of our switchgear beyond the requirements of current standards. By simulating the harshest of conditions, from the coldest Arctic temperatures to the stifling heat of the Sahara, we will enhance product reliability & grid resilience.”
DEMONSTRATING THE WORLD’S FIRST CO2 BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE FACILITY
FIRST 9HA CCPP ORDER HAS COME FROM VIETNAM
Energy Dome, a provider of utility-scale long-duration energy storage, has successfully launched its first CO2 Battery facility in Sardinia, Italy. The final de-risking of the CO2 Battery technology and entrance into the commercial scaling phase makes it the first commercial long-duration energy storage technology on the market, the company states, providing a reliable alternative to fossil fuels for dispatchable baseload power globally. Energy Dome began its operations in February 2020 and has progressed from a concept to full testing at multi-megawatt scale in just over two years. This successful launch is in part due to the unique nature of the company’s technology, which integrates known components in a novel industrial process based on a thermodynamic process that efficiently stores energy by manipulating CO2 under different state conditions in a closed thermodynamic transformation. The initial phase of operations confirmed the performance of the CO2 Battery and its capability of storing energy for a long duration, all while maintaining highly competitive round-trip efficiency, without degradation or site dependency. The demonstration project also used off-the-shelf equipment available from a globally-established supply chain – meaning the technology can be quickly deployed at rless than half the cost of similar-sized lithium-ion battery storage facilities.
GE has won an order from Samsung C&T Corporation, which is leading the EPC consortium providing power generation equipment for units 3 and 4 of PetroVietnam Power Corporation’s Nhon Trach plant in Ong Keo Industrial Park in the Nhon Trach district. Based 70 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, the project marks GE’s first H-Class gas turbine order in Vietnam. Once in commercial operation in 2025, Nhon Trach 3 & 4 is expected to deliver over 1.6 GWe, and it will be the first power plant fuelled by liquefied natural gas in the country. A recent memorandum of understanding was signed by GE and PV Power for the development of solutions to improve the efficiency of the existing Nhon Trach 1 power plant and develop long-term co-operation for the maintenance for Nhon Trach 3 & 4. Vietnam is currently heavily reliant on coal which fuels around a third of its

electricity output. The growth of gas-fired power generation will support the coal-to-gas transition, and contribute to the implementation of Vietnam’s announced commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. It plans to do this by supporting the rapid expansion of renewable energy through its dispatchable power profile. For the Nhon Trach expansion GE will provide two blocks each of more than 800 MW including a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine, the company’s most efficient 50 Hz gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator and a heat recovery steam generator . www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

NEW TECH: INCREASING SOLAR PANEL EFFICIENCY BY ADDING TOMATO PIGMENT Lycopene, which makes fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes red, improves the efficiency of sunlight conversion into energy. The chemical that makes tomatoes red could also improve the efficiency and stability of solar panels, suggests new research. Most commercial solar cells are silicon-based, but a new generation of solar cells made from thin films of perovskite, a titanium and calcium crystal, promise greater efficiencies and are easier to work with. However, perovskites degrade far more quickly than silicon-based cells, so improvements in stability are highly sought after. Perovskite is a calcium titanium oxide mineral composed of calcium titanate (chemical formula CaTiO3). Its name is also applied to the class of compounds which have the same type of crystal structure as CaTiO3 ( A B X 3), known as the perovskite structure. Donglei Zhou at Jilin University in Changchun, China, and his colleagues chose to add lycopene, a pigment found in tomatoes and other plants. In small-area lab devices, perovskite PV cells have exceeded almost all thin-film technologies (except III-V technologies) in power conversion efficiency, showing rapid improvements over the past five years. However, high-efficiency devices have not necessarily been stable or possible to fabricate at large scale. Maintaining these high efficiencies while achieving stability in large-area modules will be key to developing this new technology.

M501JAC GAS TURBINES IN OPERATION AT THE 1200MW JACKSON POWER GENERATION PROJECT The first two Mitsubishi Power M501JAC gas turbines manufactured in North America are operating commercially at the 1200 MW Jackson Generation Project, a combined-cycle power plant in Illinois, USA. The Jackson plant dispatches power into the PJM regional transmission organisation, modernising and diversifying the Illinois power grid and generating enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes. The project supports Illinois’s commitment to renewable energy by providing efficient, flexible natural gas generation to complement wind and solar energy. It also reduces the state’s dependence on coal-fired generation. The turbines were manufactured at Mitsubishi Power’s Savannah Machinery Works. The facility opened in 2010 and today manufactures key gas turbine parts, provides complete steam turbine services, and manufactures advanced fuel-efficient gas turbines. The facility employs more than 180. The owner of the plant, J-POWER-USA, along with Mitsubishi Power and the project’s engineering, procurement and construction contractor Kiewit Power Constructors Co. (Kiewit) together developed and signed a charter to commit to honest and professional behavior, individually and as a team to build the new plant. “The engineering, project execution, and teamwork for Jackson Generation have been exceptional,” said Mark Condon, President and CEO of J-POWER USA. “Mitsubishi Power and Kiewit have worked with Jackson’s commissioning crews throughout the global pandemic to overcome the effects of its impact.” www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
Generating power from solar, wind and other renewables increased to a record level worldwide in 2021 and will grow further in2022, suggests new research. According to the International Energy Agency, the world added a record 295GW of new renewable power capacity in 2021, overcoming supply chain challenges, construction delays and high raw material prices,. The IEA’s latest Renewable Energy Market Update. Global capacity advise that energy supplies are expected to rise this year to 320GW – equivalent to an amount that would come close to meeting the entire electricity demand of Germany or matching the European Union’s total electricity generation from natural gas. PV is on course to account for 60% of global renewable power growth in 2022, followed by wind and hydropower. In the European Union, annual additions jumped by almost 30% to 36GW in 2021, finally exceeding the EU’s previous record of 35GW set 10 years ago.

BIOGAS UPGRADING PLANT WILL HELP TURN GRASS INTO GAS - A KEY PART OF THE GREEN REVOLUTION ACROSS THE WORLD The technology group Wärtsilä will supply its Puregas CA50 biogas upgrading plant for an innovative Green Gas Mill project in the U.K. designed to turn grass into gas that can be used to heat homes. The project is being headed by Ecotricity, a British energy company dedicated to fighting climate change by ending the use of fossil fuels. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in April 2022. When operational in 2023, this will be the first Green Gas Mill in the UK, making an important step towards creating a green economy. The proven technology process works with grass that has been broken down in a silage container for approximately two months. It is then put into a digester, where it gives off a methane-rich gas to be fed into the domestic gas network. The Wärtsilä biogas upgrading plant refines the gas before it is sent to the grid. “Replacing fossil fuels with grass-fed gas provides significant green energy benefits. Importantly, existing gas boilers installed in homes all around Britain can still be used, but in a much more sustainable way. Wärtsilä has a strong track-record in delivering highly efficient biogas upgrading solutions, and their Puregas system is a key element of this project,” commented Chris Ives of Paul Winter Consulting Ltd, the Consulting Engineer appointed by Ecotricity to manage this project.
IN BRIEF
WAR IN THE UKRAINE AFFECTING ENERGY MARKETS The war in Ukraine is threatening further disruption to already stretched supply chains. Ukraine and Russia may only account for a small proportion of the imports of major manufacturing nations like Germany and the US, but they are essential suppliers of raw materials and energy for many crucial supply chains. Many European countries are heavily dependent on Russian energy, particularly gas through several vital pipelines, and this may have coloured their approach to the crisis. Russian gas reliance. The German government has suspended new Baltic gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. indefinitely While a complete suspension of Russian gas flows is unlikely at the moment, even small disruptions will have a significant impact. Global gas reserves are low due to the pandemic and energy prices are already rising sharply, impacting consumers and industry. Michael Bradshaw, Professor of Global Energy at the UK’s Warwick Business School, has suggested that any plans to reduce the reliance on oil and gas imports from Russia is likely to promote a short-term surge in emissions as production from non-Russian energy sources accelerate.. Bradshaw points out: “The current energy crisis may stiffen the resolve of many emerging economies to stick with coal, believing it to be more secure. It may be costly, but far less so than gas. As the gas price crisis last autumn demonstrated, markets were tight before the war in Ukraine and there is little spare LNG. Many may now avoid it, aiming to leapfrog from coal to clean at some future date. “However, it is important to note the conclusions of the IEA’s Net-Zero study, that investing in fossil fuel production is not compatible with the Paris Agreement.” He explains: “Investing in new large-scale, long-term projects and infrastructure is not a solution to the current crisis. It could also result in ‘carbon lock-in’ or stranded assets. The ‘no regrets’ solution is not more fossil fuel production. It is a reduction in fossil fuel consumption through efficiency, demand reduction, and an increase in clean energy sources. Professor Bradshaw concludes: “It is unclear how fast this can be achieved, but security concerns may accelerate the pace of change.”

NEW FUEL-AGNOSTIC ENGINES ARE NOW AVAILABLE GLOBALLY Cummins Inc. is offering the first fuel-agnostic engine platforms for medium- and heavy-duty applications. The popularity of the new engine designs is driven by a full-court press from industry and regulators to achieve zero emissions. Many countries are seek lower emissions via cleaner fuels or other alternative fuels, as funding becomes available from different sources. This year Cummins introduced a new line of fuel-agnostic engines to serve as a platform for multiple fuels. These platforms use an engine core with shared architecture, which may be used (with slight retrofit) for a variety of fuels: gasoline, diesel, propane, hydrogen, and others. Thus the engines are ‘fuel-agnostic’. These new engine platforms are designed from derived data from millions of diesel and natural gas engines already in use by existing Cummins customers. Today’s digital and connected technologies allow Cummins to extract insights specific to different engine duty cycles and leverage such data to design a reliable fuel-agnostic platform, says the company. Destination Zero is the term used by Cummins describes the company’s goals for engine production over the next 30 years. Fuel-agnostic engines, Cummins posits, are an essential element of the company’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and air quality impacts to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

APPROVAL FOR SERIES 1600 AND SERIES 4000 GENERATOR SETS FOR USE WITH SYNTHETIC DIESEL FUELS Rolls-Royce business unit power systems has approved its Series 1600 and Series 4000 generator sets for use with EN15940 synthetic diesel fuels. “There is already a lot of interest in HVO in particular from many customers in the energy industry and data center business who want to improve their carbon footprint,” explained Tobias Ostermaier, president, stationary power solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “The results from pilot customers show a significant reduction in greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions by using HVO instead of fossil diesel in their gensets.” Waste vegetable and animal fats and used cooking oils can be used as base materials for HVO, which are converted into hydrocarbons by means of a catalytic reaction with the addition of hydrogen. The advantages of HVO are clean combustion with a reduction in particulate emissions of up to 80%, nitrogen oxide emissions by an average of 8% and (depending on the manufacturing process and feedstock) CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. Because HVO fuel is produced from renewable raw materials, its production, transport, and combustion generate only about as many greenhouse gases as were absorbed by the plants during the growth of the biomass. Convincing performance without engine and system modifications are one feature of the development. The tests confirmed that mtu engines perform equally excellent when using HVO (as compared to diesel) in terms of maximum power, load acceptance and fuel consumption. HVO is a drop-in fuel, which means that there are no adaptions needed.

OVERHAUL OF TWO GAS GENERATOR SETS ACHIEVED IN JUST 15 WORKING DAYS
T
wo service teams of the MWM distributor TEDOM a.s. completed the general overhaul of two TCG 2032 V16 gas generator sets in just 15 working days. The customer appreciated the exemplary cooperation of the teams from five countries, which reduced the maintenance downtime to a minimum. Close to perfection: after intensive preparation and a highly organized process which started with the order placement in Austria, the construction of the exchange engine blocks in Spain, and the delivery of spare parts from Germany, the co-ordination of the work steps and tasks with the teams from the Czech Republic, and finally the delivery and assembly in Slovakia, everyone’s goal has been achieved. Two MWM TCG 2032 V16 gas generator sets have been overhauled at the same time, and with the shortest possible downtime. The power plant that has been in operation in Bratislava since 2012 generates an electrical output of 8.6 MW and supplies its energy to the local grid. During this time, the two units generated over 1.2 billion kWh of electrical energy over a period of 150,000 operating hours. The thermal energy is fed directly into Bratislava’s municipal district heating network. It was therefore very important that the E70 general overhaul - which was necessary after 10 years of continuous operation and was carried out during the heating period - would be completed quickly and smoothly. In order to carry out this challenging task, the plant operator relied on the long-term proven co-operation with TEDOM, which specializes in combined heat and power (CHP) plants and operates worldwide, as well as on the expertise of MWM Austria, whose teams had already been involved in the planning and construction of this plant. To carry out the overhaul of the two units as quickly as possible, the parties agreed to use exchange engine blocks from the MWM X-Change program. The TCG 2032 series exchange blocks required for this purpose were reconditioned and delivered by the X-Change Centre in Vigo, Spain. In order to meet the customer’s request for the fastest possible overhaul, the plant in Vigo prepared two extended long blocks a special variant that, in addition to the cylinder heads, also includes the pre-assembled intercoolers. Earlier this year the time had come. Two trucks delivered the engine blocks, which had previously been prepared in Spain and weighed over 20 tons, on schedule. In the meantime, additionally required spare parts and

In the meantime, additionally required spare parts and tools were delivered by the MWM worldwide spare parts logistics centre in Lorsch, Germany. On the morning of the following day, the two TEDOM service teams started with the conversion work. First, the two gas engines, which, aligned with the generator, weigh approximately 50 tons, were pulled out of the engine room on heavyduty casters. Subsequently, the engine blocks were replaced. By the end of the same day, both units and the overhauled engine blocks had been returned to their original places in the engine room. After that, the detailed work began. TEDOM provided a separate team for each gas engine so that all further work could be carried out at the same time. More work was done on the following days. For example, reusable parts such as the rocker arms and push rods were dismantled from the old engine blocks, inspected, and then reinstalled on the new ones. In addition, generator maintenance was carried out, and the gas control system was renewed. After only 15 working days, the job was finished. Thanks to the wellcoordinated assignment and the exemplary cooperation of all teams,
the plant was recommissioned after only 120 working hours under the supervision of a commissioning technician from MWM Austria and was completed on the following days to the full satisfaction of the customer. This means a reduction of 83% in the downtime usually incurred for the task without using an exchange engine block. MWM has been successfully implementing this more economical, more eco-friendly, and faster alternative for its major overhauls for years with its X-Change Centers in Duisburg, Germany, for the TCG series up to 2.3 MW and in Vigo, Spain, for the TCG 2032 series. Used engine blocks are reconditioned at the respective X-Change Centers and brought to an as-good-as-new condition. The customer, in turn, receives a pre-overhauled engine block and does not have to wait for his blocks to be reconditioned. The exchange blocks can be offered in different versions and scopes, such as the basic short block variant, the long block that includes pre-assembled cylinder heads, the extended long block with pre-assembled intercooler, as well as the exchange of the complete engine. www.mwm.net

EXAMINING THE BENEFITS OF SAE 30 STATIONARY GAS ENGINE OIL IN FULL SCALE ENGINE TESTS
N
atural gas is recognized as a critical engine fuel for the 21st century. Its market share of the global energy consumption significantly expands due to its environmental and economic benefits including lower emissions, steady supply, and very high overall efficiency, converting up to 90% of the fuel energy into useful power and heat. While CO2, NOx, and SO2 emissions from stationary gas engines are significantly lower than comparable diesel engines, there is a growing concern that engine emissions especially methane slip has to be addressed. Natural gas original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are constantly introducing changes to engine design, operation, and catalytic after-treatment to address emissions and comply with stricter environmental regulations. Stationary gas engines used in power generation, gas compression and other industrial applications are typically lubricated with an SAE 40 monograde SGEO. Such oil does not contain the VI improver additives (polymer) nor the friction modifier additives that are present in automotive multigrade lubricating oils and its content of Extreme Pressure/Anti Wear additive and dispersant is significantly lower than that of an automotive engine lubricant. Gas engine OEMS have been reluctant to apply lower viscosity oils, fearing that reduced oil film thickness in bearings may increase wear. But the global race to reduce CO2 emissions that has resulted in the development of lower viscosity engine oils may also give rise to a market demand for fuel efficient stationary gas engine oils. Despite the historic preference of gas engine OEMS for SAE 40 monograde oils, several gas engine designs are capable of running safely on SAE 30 monograde oils.
22
WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER
This awareness and stricter governmental policies on carbon emissions and rising fuel costs may necessitate the need for SAE 30 monograde SGEOs that positively effect fuel economy and the environment in the stationary gas engine market over the coming few years. In addition to energy efficiency, another main area that can benefit from an SAE 30 SGEO is the current energy market, which is in transition with an increasing role of wind and solar energy. In this market, gas engines are often providing reserve power. This leads to a need of fast engine ramp up and down and multiple starts and stops per day. Low operating hours and high start rates are becoming the new normal. In such operating conditions, faster supply of oil to critical hard to reach points in the engine, e.g. valve guide during engine startup, will prevent wear and tear. This can be another advantage of an SAE 30 monograde gas engine oil over an SAE 40 oil. Here, the development of a test procedure for evaluating the potential benefits of a Petro-Canada Lubricants branded SAE 30 monograde SGEO in an R&D engine test bed will be revealed. The focus has been on two areas, a) demonstrate and quantify the effect of lower viscosity grade on the fuel consumption rate, and b) demonstrate the faster lubrication of hard to reach points in the engine during startup. Although there exists industry recognised fuel efficiency test methods for passenger car and on-road diesel engine sectors, these methods are not suitable for evaluating the fuel efficiency performance of a gas engine oil because of the significant differences in fuel type, engine operating
conditions, and oil formulations. Comparative measurements have been made of three different gas engine oils, one Petro-Canada Lubricants branded SAE 30 monograde oil and two SAE 40 monograde oils, one Petro-Canada Lubricants branded product and one from another reputable supplier, in a modern MAN E3262 E302 twelvecylinder gas engine. This engine was on a fully instrumented and controlled R&D test bed at Adapt Engineering in Germany. The performance of each oil with respect to fuel efficiency was assessed in an extensive program comprising endurance testing, stationary tests on various load/ speed points and dynamic tests running the engine fired as well as non-fired (motored) under controlled repeatable conditions. The energy efficiency of the SAE 30 oil compared to the SAE 40 oils has been assessed, not only by measuring fuel consumption but also by looking into indirect indicators of better fuel efficiency such as manifold pressure, exhaust gas temperature, heat absorbed in the lubricating oil, friction torque, and engine run down time after stopping fuel supply. The use of an SAE 30 oil results in faster lubrication of hard to reach points (e.g. valve guide) during startup in comparison with the SAE 40 oils. The test engine used for this study was a MAN E3262 E302 naturally

aspirated gas engine, installed at the R&D The engine was fully instrumented with temperature and pressure sensors for all media at every possible location, allowing full evaluation of engine performance, exhaust emissions and heat balance. The suction air temperature was controlled, but not the suction air pressure and humidity, which followed ambient conditions. The fuel used was pipeline gas quality from the German grid. In the course of the test program, gas samples were taken and analysed. The (small) variations in lower heating value have been taken into account in fuel efficiency results. Air fuel ratio was adjusted manually based on composition of the exhaust gases using Brettschneider equations. In order to investigate if the SAE 30 SGEO flows faster through the engine than the SAE 40 SGEOs, the engine oil system had been equipped with an accumulator, connected to the pressurized oil system over an orifice. The pressure buildup in the accumulator reacts as a first order system, contrary to pressure build up in the pressurized oil system of the engine. The pressurised oil system is a hydraulically-closed system and therefore pressure build up is instantaneous. The accumulator simulates in a qualitative, not quantitative manner, the oil supply to engine parts that are not included in the pressurised oil circuit of the engine, such as the valve guides. Oil1 and Oil2 are Petro-Canada Lubricants branded products and use the same additive chemistry, Oil3 is using different additive chemistry. All three oils are monograde and do not include VI improvers or friction modifiers in their formulation. Oil1 and Oil3 are formulated with heavy neutral Grp II base oils while Oil3 is using Grp III base oil in its formulation. Lubricants of same additive chemistry and different viscosity grade (Oil1 and Oil2) were selected to evaluate the effect of viscosity on gas engine efficiency. Lubricants of same viscosity grade and different additive chemistry (Oil1 and Oil3) were selected to explore any additive effects of SGEO formulations on gas engine efficiency. The test program consisted of four elements: 1. Endurance test of 100 hours at full load and 1500 rpm with Oil1 and Oil2. 2. Engine performance measurements over a map of load/speed points with all three oils: measurements at 1500 rpm and 1800 rpm were each performed at 100%, 75% and 50% load points. 3. Recording of driving torque of the unfired engine at operating temperature at two different speeds (1500 and 1800 rpm) with all three oils. Assessment of oil pressure build-up (time response) involved different boundary conditions with all three oils. The Petro-Canada Lubricants branded SAE 40 and SAE 30 oils have been used in a 100-hour endurance test. The purpose of this test was to demonstrate long-term influence of the oil viscosity on engine fuel efficiency, as well as its influence on oil consumption. According to the research paper, the results clearly demonstrate a reduced fuel burn with the SAE 30 oil. The fuel burn with SAE 30 was 5.8kW of fuel lower heating value below that with SAE 40, which equates to an improvement of 0.8% of the total fuel burn with SAE 40 oil. The better fuel burn was also confirmed by the lower manifold pressure with the SAE 30 oil, i.e. the pressure of the mixture after throttle valve, before cylinder. The throttle valve equalises variations in ambient pressure, the resulting mixture pressure represents the amount of energy that enters the cylinder during the inlet stroke www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
at a given air/fuel ratio. Other indirect parameters that confirmed better fuel efficiency with the SAE 30 oil were reduced air- and exhaust gas flow. Exhaust gas temperature cannot be used as indicator for fuel consumption as the engine was operated at Lambda = 1. The effect of oil viscosity on lubricating oil consumption could not be demonstrated in 100 hours with the measurement method applied. Values measured were extremely low at 0.021 g/kWh for Oil1 SAE40 and 0.027 g/kWh for Oil2 SAE 30. The difference found is well within the accuracy of the measurement method (repeated weighing of oil above a certain level in the oil sump) which was demonstrated by the large spread in the individual amounts weighed during the repeated measurements. With all three oils, the engine performance was tested at two speeds times three load points. The order of testing was Oil1 SAE 40, Oil2 SAE 30, Oil3 SAE 40, to ensure that results are real and not due to sensor drift or bias over time. Just as in the endurance test, the fuel savings with the SAE 30 oil have also been confirmed by lower manifold pressures. The savings in fuel burn at 1500 rpm full load point
corresponded well with the savings found in the endurance test. The fuel savings with the SAE 30 oil at 1800 rpm were very similar to the savings at 1500 rpm, whereas one might have expected higher friction losses at higher engine speed. This may be explained by the engine operating in the fully hydrodynamic section of the Stribeck curve, therefore the friction coefficient at 1800 rpm would only be marginally higher than that at 1500 rpm. Also at 1800 rpm the engine runs at lower Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) than at 1500 rpm, resulting in lower normal forces. The reduced normal forces may offset the effect of higher speed, apparently resulting in very similar friction losses at both speeds. All tests executed have consistently demonstrated that the Petro-Canada Lubricants branded SAE 30 oil offered a fuel saving over SAE 40 oils and the effect of different additive chemistry in Oil1 and Oil3 on fuel economy was fairly neutral. The lower fuel consumption of the SAE 30 oil has also been confirmed by indirect parameters. More information: lubricants.petro-canada.com www.hollyfrontierspecialties.com

HOSPITAL HYDROGEN BACKUP POWER SOLUTION PROVES A LIFESAVER
A
BB has collaborated with Israel fuel cell manufacturer GenCell to install a unique hydrogen-based Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) system at the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center
in Israel. The breakthrough fuel cell backup technology is a first for an Israeli hospital, with the innovative solution guaranteed to keep the power on 24/7 for critical life-saving equipment and procedures. Located in Hadera, the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center serves a population of 450,000 and the UPS system will not only keep patients safe and ensure continuity of care, but the use of hydrogen will also reduce the hospital’s environmental impact and cut operating costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hillel Yaffe is already respected globally for its progressive approach to sustainability; it was the first hospital in Israel to be granted the ‘Green Label’ certificate from the Standards Institution of Israel and the Environment Ministry. The center invested in hydrogen-based backup to reduce its dependence on polluting diesel generators. The decision followed an in-depth energy cost analysis which revealed the limited backup capacity of the hospital’s diesel generators – where even a momentarily delay between grid and generator can cause sensitive, computerised medical equipment to malfunction, which in turn could have devastating consequences for patient care. In response, ABB and GenCell developed a bespoke solution which incorporates GenCell fuel cell modules and ABB’s advanced, high-efficiency UPS technology to form one of the most reliable, efficient hydrogen stationary systems of its kind. Thanks to the solution, staff at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center are now able to carry out life-saving procedures, many of which require complex medical equipment and intense loads, with the assurance of an unprecedented level of power reliability. As well as keeping medical schedules on track and protecting patients, the ‘always on’ upgrade also minimizes equipment downtime, routine generator testing and maintenance, repair work and replacements associated with diesel-based backup options.
“
THE HILLEL YAFFE MEDICAL CENTER NOW HAS A RELIABLE POWER SUPPLY 24/7 WHICH WILL KEEP PATIENTS SAFE, DECARBONISE ITS OPERATIONS AND REDUCE COSTS TO OPERATE. THIS LANDMARK PROJECT SIGNIFIES A CRUCIAL STEP FORWARD, AS MEDICAL FACILITIES AND OTHER PUBLIC SECTORS CONTEMPLATE HYDROGEN AS A FUTURE FUEL SOURCE.” www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
Cas Rosenberg, Power Protection Business Development, from ABB said: “As grid related power failures continue to expose hospitals to financial risk and reputational damage, it has never been more important to build resilience. This solution accelerates sustainability goals and improves power supply reliability in the hospital. Moving to a GenCell hydrogen-powered backup solution, the Hillel Yaffe Medical Center now has a reliable power supply 24/7 which will keep patients safe, decarbonize its operations and reduce costs to operate. This landmark project signifies a crucial step forward, as medical facilities and other public sectors contemplate hydrogen as a future fuel source.” The transition to hydrogen also supports the hospital’s environmental objectives to eliminate the use of diesel generators. Following the success of the initial installation, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center plans to install additional units to backup other critical medical equipment. This forms part of the center’s wider ambition to create its own microgrid to reduce its reliability on the national grid and build resilience in an increasingly
volatile energy landscape. “While we are proud of the significant environmental and power resilience achievements that Hillel Yaffe Medical Center has already reached using fuel cell backup technology, we look forward to seeing the hospital realize the enormous potential value we expect them to gain during the next phase of the project,” comments Gil Shavit, co-founder and Chief Business Development Officer, GenCell. HOSPITAL INSTALLS INTELIGEN 1000 AS AN ENDTO-END SOLUTION FOR A BACKUP POWER PLANT
C
omAp, the leading provider of smart energy control solutions, recently introduced InteliGen 1000, a paralleling gen-set controller for complex applications, such as data centres, hospitals, or banks. Its developers had three key values in mind right from the beginning of its design: powerful hardware, communication possibilities with a great focus on cybersecurity, and flexibility. InteliGen 1000 is ready to be used in demanding applications, including grid connections, virtual power plants, demand response, or spot price dispatch. “InteliGen 1000 is the latest platform that ComAp would like to build on going forward. This advanced controller is a culmination of several years of development, in which we combined 30-years of experience in power generation control solutions and new technologies. The InteliGen 1000 will enable us to stay up-to-date with the latest trends in power generation, especially in complex installations like back-up systems for data centres or microgrids,” says Petr Matas, Direct of Product Management at ComAp. “When developing the controller, we put great focus on cybersecurity, large-scaled communication capabilities, and product flexibility, which we believe will play a key role in future business,” adds Matas. InteliGen 1000 is around 20 times more powerful than its predecessor - InteliGen NTC BaseBox - and is able to handle both critical and non-critical tasks at the same time. The controller can communicate with a large number of connected remote devices as well as up to 64 controllers at one site. In most applications, the more complex the site is, the more controllers are needed. This increases the complexity of the project, and more importantly, it increases the related costs. Typically, the limit for these applications is 32 controllers used. You can have more, but that means adding another master controller, and gen-set groups, and much more programming. For an application that has about 40 controllers, this would be both overly complicated and expensive. However, the InteliGen 1000 can have up to 64 controllers connected with the communication bus, so there is no need for adding extra units. With this feature, InteliGen 1000 can be used for much larger applications, eliminating the need for additional units, programming, and expenses. Power generation, like any major infrastructure, can be a target for cyber attacks. Therefore, cyber security is one of the essential features ComAp focuses on from the very start of product development. This focus on security is even more evident with the InteliGen 1000 as it has a number of features that further enhance cyber security without compromising remote communications or flexibility.

Power Control And Automation Solutions Ltd (PCAS) partnered with ComAp recently and installed InteliGen 1000 at a backup power plant in a hospital in the Midlands, United Kingdom. PCAS is a mission-critical power solutions company working internationally on data centres, hospitals, CHPs, gas peaking plants, with over 1000MW of power installed and commissioned across the UK. The hospital approached PCAS for an end-to-end solution for a back-up power plant as they know the hospital’s technical manual and requirements. The power plant room is quite small, so PCAS had a close collaboration and consultations with the hospital’s project team to understand their needs and develop a tailored, functional solution. PCAS proposed utilising a JCB generator and outfitting the system with the latest ComAp´s InteliGen 1000 controller along with the new InteliVision 5.2 display to allow power management and an N+1 solution. “The InteliGen 1000 gave us the power we needed to run this application. The pre-programmed functions allowed us to put the engine into operation very quickly and the large in-built PLC interpreter allowed us to implement the specific customer requirements easily and
quickly on our own. Cyber security, redundancy options, and G99 readiness were the main attributes for selecting this controller,” said Stuart Turner, Managing Director at Power Control and Automation Solutions Ltd. The InteliVision 5.2 display provided fast and easy access to control the gen-set, and the easyto-read onscreen information made helping the customer with any fault-finding very easy. When commissioning, they found that InteliConfig, ComAp’s latest configuration and monitoring tool, was easy to use and allowed for intuitive programming, which was helpful for the newer, less experienced engineers on their team. InteliGen 1000 brings best practices from the information technology world to the power generation industry. These include introducing a unique cyphering system for each connection session with the controller, extra authentication for users connecting from the outside, ComAp signed firmware, individual user account logins, data logging, and many others. All this protects customers’ facilities against external cyberattacks and, at the same time, lets them enjoy the benefits of remote monitoring and connectivity. www.comap-control.com

FUEL CELLS: SMALL, ON-SITE POWER PLANTS FOR CITIES, DATA CENTRES & SHOPPING MALLS
B
osch reports that it is branching out into the development of components for electrolyzers, which use electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Ideally, the electricity for this purpose is generated from renewable sources such as wind or photovoltaic power, in which case the result is known as “green hydrogen”. “We cannot afford to delay climate action any longer, so we aim to use Bosch technology to support the rapid expansion of hydrogen production in Europe,” said Dr. Stefan Hartung, chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH, at the presentation of the company’s annual figures . “To do this, we will leverage our know-how in fuel-cell technology,” added Dr. Markus Heyn, member of the board of management of Bosch and chairman of the Mobility Solutions business sector. Drawing on this expertise, Bosch will assign the development of electrolyzer components to the Mobility Solutions business sector, investing up to €500 million in this venture by the end of the decade. In light of energy diversification, the move away from fossil fuels, and the need to reduce CO2 emissions, demand for green hydrogen is growing rapidly – not only in energy-intensive industries such as steel, chemicals, and heavy-duty freight, but also in private real estate. According to the EU, demand is set to rise to some ten million metric tons a year by 2030. Bosch forecasts that the global market for electrolyzer components will increase to a volume of around € 14 billion over the same period, with Europe set to see the highest rates of growth. To help business and society reduce dependency on fossil fuels and harness new forms of energy, Bosch intends to invest some €3 billion in climate-neutral technology, such as electrification and hydrogen, over the next three years. Unlike many of the electrolyzer components currently on the market, the Bosch smart modules will be mass- produced. As such, the manufacturing operation will generate economies of scale. “Two key factors are involved in ramping up hydrogen production: speed and cost,” Heyn said. “This is where we can play to our strengths, thanks to our expertise in mass production and our automotive know-how.” Bosch is now planning to start volume production as quickly as possible at a number of European locations. These include Bamberg and Feuerbach (Germany), Tilburg (Netherlands), Linz (Austria), and České Budějovice (Czech Republic).
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
The ongoing transformation of the automotive sector presents a huge challenge for the industry as a whole. As ever, Bosch’s response here is to innovate. In entering a new field of business – one that will add a non-automotive wing to its mobility solutions business – the company says it is seizing the opportunity to further safeguard employment. In the coming years, this expansion into electrolyzer components is expected to create work for hundreds of associates. “In fact, we’re doing three things at once,” Heyn said. “We’re making an important contribution ecologically, economically, and socially.” Bosch firmly believes in hydrogen as a future fuel, and is also working on both stationary and mobile fuel cells. One intended use for the former is as small, onsite power plants for
cities, data centres, shopping malls, business parks, and as charge spots for electric vehicles. Bosch plans to use mobile fuel cells to facilitate the climate-neutral shipping of goods and commodities, initially by truck. The company’s portfolio of vehicle-related products in this field ranges from individual sensors to core components such as the electric air compressor, the stack, and complete fuel-cell modules. Production is expected to start this year. When it comes to green hydrogen, Bosch is stepping on the gas: in the interest of effective climate action, the company is planning not only to use this new fuel, but also to be one of the key companies producing it. www.bosch-mobilitysolutions.com

ENERGY STORAGE FOR CÔTE D’IVOIRE’S FIRST RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANT
S
aft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, has won a major contract from Eiffage Energie Systèmes to deliver a 10 MW energy storage system (ESS) that will ensure smooth grid integration for the Boundiali solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant. The 37.5 MWp (megawatt-peak) plant, owned and operated by CI-Energies (Côte d’Ivoire Energies), will be the first large-scale solar project in Côte d’Ivoire. The primary role of the ESS will be capacity firming and smoothing of the solar plant’s inherently intermittent output to ensure a predictable and reliable feed into the local grid. The fully-integrated lithium-ion ESS will comprise six Saft Intensium Max High Energy containers, providing a total of 13.8 MWh (megawatt-hour) energy storage, together with power conversion and medium voltage power station systems. “As the main contractor for the Boundiali project, it was vital to find an ESS partner that could not only meet the technical requirements, but would also ensure that the system would operate reliably throughout a 10-year life,” said Ludovic Bavière of Eiffage Energie Systems. “The quality of our discussions and a previous experience reassured us of Saft’s abitity to carry out this strategic project for our client, CI-Energies”. Côte d’Ivoire had an installed electricity production capacity of 2229 MW in 2019 and is expected to double its production by 2030. Electricity supply is currently largely provided by thermal energy and hydroelectric dams. The government aims to make the country the energy hub of West Africa by 2030 with an energy mix of 42 percent renewables. Boundiali, a city of around 40,000 in the north of Côte d’Ivoire, will soon be home to the country’s first solar power plant. It will produce clean electricity for around 30,000 households, avoid the emission of 27,000 tonnes of CO2, and will help create 300 jobs in the region. The area is classified as a semi-arid zone with a hot and very dry climate. In addition to ensuring reliability and long-life in ambient temperatures that can reach 37°C, the battery containers are designed to resist hot and dusty winds. The ESS will rapidly charge or discharge its lithium-ion batteries to accommodate the intermittent output from the solar power plant. It then provides a smooth generation profile, equivalent to the plant’s output averaged over 30 minutes, that can be easily accepted by the local grid. This ensures most effective use of valuable decarbonised electricity, reports Saft.

The €40 million Boundiali solar photovoltaic (PV) power station has a capacity of 37.5 megawatts, sold directly to the state-owned Ivorian electricity utility company, Société de Gestion du Patrimoine du Secteur de l’Electricité (SOGEPE), for integration into the national electricity grid. The electricity generated is distributed via a substation near the power station. The energy generated will power approximately 30,000 homes. In addition to supplying the country with 37.5 megawatts of clean energy, the power station enables Ivory Coast avoid the emission of 27,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide annually. Up to 300 construction jobs were created during the construction phase. The power station was developed by the government of Ivory Coast, with financial backing from the European Union and the German Investment and Development Bank (KfW). The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract was awarded to Eiffage Énergie Systèmes, a subsidiary of the French Eiffage Group. The 10MW/13.8MWh lithium battery energy storage system (BESS) will be installed onsite in six containers. CI Energies is also planning to test the ESS in other network support options such as ramp rate control,
frequency support, reactive power support and black start. This will provide useful data on the aging of the battery in different service stacking scenarios. The Saft ESS is scheduled for commissioning at the Boundiali site in September 2022. Saft specialises in advanced technology battery solutions for industry, from the design and development to the production, customization and service provision. ALTERNATORS - LOOKING AT INTEGRATED PACKGED SOLUTIONS FOR VARIED APPLICATIONS
T
he recognition of a growing demand from the market for more integrated, packaged solutions has influenced companies in designing and developing new alternators. “Power generation is becoming much more about complete solutions than products,” says Mecc Alte’s Sales and Marketing Director, Jonathan Stokes. “We’re creating value by supplying Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with alternators, controllers, battery chargers and governors required for their generators. The result: an integrated solution that very closely matches the unique demands of each and every power requirement.” A totally new, fully-integrated Digital CANbus Series solution – SMART Link - integrates power management and monitoring into a single platform. When it’s paired with a Mecc Alte digital alternator and a Mecc Alte controller, the results are impressive, says the company. “By providing simple safe access to all essential genset components, we enable true digital regulation and real time measurement, as well as smart diagnostics, rapid setting via the controller, and enhanced safety – all in one human-machine interface or HMI,” says Jonathan. The next generation of the company’s highly successful C-Type series consists of two new models – the ECP4 and ECP30, adding to a range that is designed to deliver a high power to size ratio. As with all C-Type alternators, the new models benefit from Mecc Alte MAUX (Mecc Alte Auxillary Winding System) installed as standard. This power boost facility enables every C-Type alternator to take an overload of >300% forced current for up to 20 seconds – perfect for motor starting requirements. The C-Type Series represent a completely new approach to design, both inside and out, that brings various advances and benefits to our customers and end users. We have invested many hours in research, working with the power generation industry, to understand the challenges that are faced in achieving and maintaining continuous, efficient and reliable power delivery. Utilising wire-wound technology and with an output extending from 7.5 to 5,000kVA, genuine STAMFORD® alternators are designed for delivering superior efficiencies in marine, oil and gas auxiliary, UPS, telecoms, CHP, construction and other continuous or standby power applications. STAMFORD® alternators are available with a choice of SAE adaptors to ensure easy coupling to a wide range of prime movers. All STAMFORD® S-Range units

fitted with CoreCooling™ Technology. A recent power project off Alaska’s coast reflects the robustness of STAMFORD® alternators. They have helped to unlock a new hybrid plant in one of the world’s harshest regions by supporting 200 kW energy supply for Frontier Power’s partnership with Silver Mountain Construction on the installation. This involved pairing a propane powered Kubota engines and STAMFORD S0 alternators inside the generators with solar and wind energy sources. The plant is the area’s only source of energy and drives a GPS system. Recognising the critical customer requirements for low maintenance and long-lasting performance, the power provider, Frontier Power, decided to equip the required generator sets with STAMFORD HC5 alternators. On the other side of the world, in the fast-growing mega-city of Shenzhen in China, STAMFORD alternators are playing a key part in powering a major municipal solid waste project. The Shenzhen Dongjiang Environmental Renewable Energy Co Ltd uses household waste to create landfill gas for power generation,
producing 50 million kWH of power each year. Nidec/Leroy-Somer developed the LSA 47.3 to provide increased efficiency and starting kVA over its predecessor, and also benefits from the implementation of the lastest technologies, reports the company. The LSA 47.3 delivers a rated power between 410 and 660 kVA at 50 Hz (495 to 825 kVA at 60 Hz). The 660 kVA rating (825 kVA at 60 Hz) was previously held by the LSA 49.3. Thanks to the cooling circuit optimisation, the LSA 47.3 is now able to reach this power node for prime and demanding application. This is a significant benefit for generator set manufacturers as the same power is made available through a more compact machine. The LSA 47.3 alternator features a SHUNT excitation system with a R250 regulator as standard. An AREP auxiliary winding excitation system with D350 digital regulator version is also available to improve transient performances and provide high overload capacities. www.meccalte.com www.stamford-avk.com acim.nidec.com

ENERGY EFFICIENCY MEASURES CRITICALLY NEEDED, BUT NOT AT EXEP NSE FO EXISTING SCHEMES, SAYS ADE
More money to roll out energy #efficiency measures ahead of next winter is critically needed, but not at the expense of existing schemes, says the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE). Media reports suggest Prime Minister Boris Johnson is planning to divert more than £1 billion from existing energy efficiency schemes to focus on insulating the country’s most vulnerable households through the new Energy Company Obligation scheme. This money could potentially be taken from the £1 billion Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which helps fund energy efficiency upgrades in public buildings such as schools and hospitals, as well as from a £450 million scheme to upgrade old gas boilers to modern heat pumps. The ADE warns that although it is essential to commit more money to energy efficiency measures in homes to improve energy security and tackle rising bills, this must not come at the expense of other important programmes. Joanne Wade, Chief Strategic Advisor to the ADE, says: “The Government desperately needs to provide more energy efficiency funding to the people most acutely affected by skyrocketing energy costs, but it also needs to provide a more consistent approach to funding clean, decentralised energy technologies.” Decarbonisation Scheme at such short notice would be a grave mistake – not only would it lead to issues for the supply chain and derail future action on tackling climate change, it also undermines industry confidence in such schemes.

AUTOMATED TESTING OF TECHNICAL INTERLOCKINGS AND SCADA COMMUNICATION WITH STATIONSCOUT 2.10 Testing of interlocking conditions and similar logic in IEDs plays a major role in factory- and site acceptance tests (FAT/SAT). To speed up testing of interlocking conditions, OMICRON’s StationScout allows you to define your test cases including expected results during preparation in the office and run them on your system with automated execution of control commands and automated assessments. The assessments includes checking values from logical nodes like CILO, issuing switching commands, and checking the command response and switch state. Another crucial step in testing an SAS is verifying that all signals from the signal list are correctly received and displayed at all destinations. With its simulation features, StationScout can especially speed up factory acceptance tests where only parts of the SAS are available. To quickly create signal tests, you can directly import signals from your signal list and let StationScout create the test steps for switch states and single-point status signals. Test steps for measurements can manually be added afterwards. These test plans can also be re-used during the SAT to visualize and assess the IEC 61850 signal flow. During engineering and FAT/SAT, IED configurations will likely be supplemented and adapted, which also means that the SCL file will be updated. StationScout allows you to re-import single IEDs or the whole substation configuration from the updated SCL file while keeping your test cases and custom signal names. www.omicronenergy.com

WEC Energy Group has chosen Wärtsilä, a leading provider of technologies and lifecycle solutions for energy markets, to deliver seven engines for a 128-MW power plant project being developed in America. The order was booked to Wärtsilä’s order intake in April 2022. WEC Energy Group is a premier U.S. energy company serving 4.6 million customers in the Midwestern states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. In a move toward more sustainable power production, the Group plans to retire 1600 MW of older, less efficient fossil-fueled power generation by 2025, and to exit coal altogether by 2035. It has allocated a total of US$5.4 billion for new investments in wind, solar and battery storage. As part of this initiative, the Group has ordered seven Wärtsilä 50SG engines, which operate on natural gas fuel. They will be part of a ] modern, low carbon natural gas energy facility that will serve customers of the WEC Energy Group utilities We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service in Wisconsin. According to Wärtsilä, these fast-starting and stopping engines offer the flexibility needed to rapidly respond to fluctuations inherent with solar and wind, thus providing the necessary grid balancing to deliver a reliable power supply for Wisconsin’s electric grid. “Wärtsilä is helping to create a carbon neutral world for electricity providers and the 50SG engine is a hallmark of that future-proof design,” said Jon Rodriguez, director, Engine power plants, Wärtsilä Energy in North America. “With the ability to convert the engine to run on various fuels including hydrogen blends, the 50SG will be able to support the reliability and flexibility demands of our client now and well into the future.” WEC Energy Group has previously ordered Wärtsilä engines for two other power plant projects with a total output of 188 MW. Delivery of the latest engine order will take place in October 2022, and the commissioning of the plant is scheduled for March 2023. With this installation, Wärtsilä will have an installed base of more than 3800 MW in the U.S. The Wärtsilä 50SG gas power plant offers high efficiency in a small footprint combined with high reliability and flexibility. This makes this solution ideal for flexible baseload applications, including daily starts and stops, also providing ancillary services, says the company. Full power can be achieved with a wide range of gas qualities and a varying methane number or heating value do not affect the operation. This is a robust, reliable genset, proven in the most challenging environments, says the manufacturer. It is said to make the most out of the cleanest fossil fuel available – natural gas. www.wartsila.com
