The world Dual Fuel Generator market is carefully analysed in a new Verified Market Report (www.c-bstatesman.com) which places an emphasis on market dynamics, including key issues and challenges, drivers, trends, and opportunities. The report includes an in-depth analysis of significant market players to understand the use of the main strategies that have been adopted in the Dual Fuel Generator market. Bi-fuel and tri-fuel generators give the customer the option to switch between fuel sources. These hybrid fuelled-generators are most commonly found in the portable generator sector. They give clients the option between petrol and propane, or petrol, propane, and natural gas. Released this month, the report also sheds light on the industrial value chain and its expected changes over 20222027. Analysts have examined prices, sales, and costs in the Dual Fuel Generator market and suggest that this sector will grow exponentially in the coming years. The research study looks at the THE DUAL FUEL products offered by a number of key companies in the field: GENERATOR MARKET Caterpillar, Cummins, DuroMax WILL BE WORTH AN Power Equipment, Generac Power Systems, Kohler, CBS Corporation ESTIMATED US$1,880.6M (Westinghouse), Champion Power Equipment, Firman Power BY 2030, GROWING AT A Equipment, Pulsar Products, BufCAGR OF 6.2%, 2021-30.” falo Corporation (Sportsman), BE Power Equipment and Zongshen Power. The conclusions of this report are backed up by another separately published study produced by Allied Market Research entitled “Multi Fuel Generators Market by fuel type, power rating, application, and end use industries: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2021–2030,” The global multi fuel generators market size was valued at US$1,038. 7 million in 2020, and is projected to reach US$1,880 million, growing at a CAGR of 6.2%. An increasing demand for uninterrupted and reliable power supplies and a plethora of power outages owing to ageing grid infrastructure and extreme weather conditions around the wrold are some of the global multi-fuel genset market trends observed in the industry. The market is also predicted to rise due to the pressure generated by power requirements in remote projects, advances in off-grid sectors, and poor grid infrastructure in developing nations. Limited power generation capacity, as well as high equipment cost, are some of the restraints for the market growth. Increasing adoption of tri-fuel generators can be stated as a ‘multi fuel generators market opportunity’ says the report. On the basis of power rating, the global multi fuel generators market is scurrently egmented into below 350 KVA, 351 KVA to 1000 KVA, and above 1000 KVA, says AMR. AIDAN TURNBULL

NEW GENERATING SOLUTION PROVIDED FOR KEY ENERGY CENTRE
A key project from G&M Tex Generating Solutions has involved the supply of a modular generator plant room to a private biofuel client. This comprised six 400kWe Scania-powered generating sets producing a combined output of 2.4MW. Electricity is generated at low voltage (400v) and is stepped up to high voltage (11KV) aligning with the onsite HV network. The priming fuel used is Red Diesel with Used Cooking Oil (UCO) conforming to EN14214 employed as the main fuel. Due to the strict environmental acoustic requirements, the plantroom noise level was engineered so it does not exceed 65dBA at 1 metre with five gensets
running. The G&M Tex scope of supply also included the Switchgear container and high level exhaust stack. The power generation engines from Scania are based on a robust design with a strength-optimised cylinder block containing wet cylinder liners, which can easily be exchanged. Individual cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder promotes reparability and fuel economy. The engine is equipped with a Scania-developed Engine Management System, EMS, to ensure the control of all aspects related to engine performance. The injection system is based on electronicallycontrolled unit injectors, which provides good fuel economy and a high torque. The engine can be fitted with air cleaners, PTOs and a cooling package, to suit a variety of installations.

£12 MILLION ENERGY CENTRE AT THE UK’S ROYAL LANCASTER INFIRMARY (RLI) The UK-based Capital Services Team was involved in an amazing 69 projects in 2021 including many large schemes and infrastructure projects such as the Energy Centre at the UK’s Royal Lancaster Informary. The year 2020 to 2021 saw the biggest Capital Plan ever in the Trust’s history – more than £50million was spent across the Trust The work has included new operating theatre facilities, and building work in the Emergency Department, among other areas. Andy Lamb, Capital Services Project Lead for UHMBT oversaw the Energy Centre build, Andy said: “The new Energy Centre will house three new energy efficient steam generating boilers. The new Energy Centre will provide a reliable source of power for the RLI site and will also result in a greater saving in energy.” The resilience of the site will be secured by the new Energy Centre and if, for any reason, the gas system fails, there is a backup system which uses diesel oil to enable the site to run for four weeks. The Energy Centre is needed because the old boilers and boiler house have come to the end of their natural life and need to be replaced with energy efficient steamraising boilers to ensure the safe running of the hospital. Mark Hampton, Capital Services Manager for UHMBT commented: “We also have a gas-powered CHP unit which was installed in 2020. This engine powers a generator which produces electricity back to the grid for the hospital’s use. The waste heat (exhaust gas from the engine), is used to produce steam via a waste heat boiler.”

FOUR POWER PLANTS FUELLED BY PALM OIL WASTE FOR MALAYSIA
Working with principal contractor NG Bailey and M&E and structural consultants RPS, P+HS Architects has delivered an award-winning new energy centre at the University Hospital of North Tees. The new centre was part of the Trust’s ongoing investment in infrastructure to secure the hospital’s long term future. The replacement of the hospital’s 50 year-old boilers, heating and electrical plant was all deemed crucial in ensuring that services remained safe, reliable, operationally effective and resilient as well as improving energy efficiency and reducing the Trust’s carbon footprint. The completed facility, linked to the existing hospital infrastructure via two subterranean walkways, provides two N+1 emergency generators, a combined heat and power engine, three boilers and photovoltaic panels together with associated works including a 30m high flue stack, oil fuel storage and distribution, water storage and associated mechanical and electrical infrastructure. The team worked together closely, using Revit to develop the scheme, providing efficiencies to the client and ensuring works were fully coordinated. All works had to be delivered on time without any disruption to the ongoing operation of the hospital. The majority of the M&E services were fabricated off-site at NG Bailey’s factory in Bradford and brought to site in pre-assembled modules, cutting time on site by around 5,000 hours and also reducing health & safety risks.
INNIO and Concord Renewable Energy plan to build four power plants across Malaysia fuelled by palm oil wastes. IN BRIEF EXPANSION PROVIDES CUSTOMISED APPLICATION SUPPORT
HVO APPROVED FOR USE WITH ALL EURO ENGINES KOHLER Engines approves the use of HVO for all its Diesel engines in Europe. HVO will enable a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 90%, with no engine modifications needed. It’s full speed ahead for Kohler Engines and its commitment to lessen the environmental impact of its engines. The company recently approved use of EN15940-compliant Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils, or HVOs, for all its diesel engines – either pure or as a blend with conventional diesel. The approval came after intensive laboratory and on-the field testing by Kohler’s engineering team. The group’s diesel engines do not require any kind of modification or specific upgrade to use HVO. However, use of exhaust gas after-treatment systems will still be necessary where already required, says Kohler’s Luigi Anone. HVO is a renewable paraffinic fuel also known under the names “synthetic diesel” and “renewable diesel”. It is produced with plant or animal oils derived from the residues of the meat and fish industries. Since it is obtained from organic material, HVO – unlike biodiesel – does not use agricultural resources or contributes to deforestation. It can be used wherever diesel fuel is used today. A reduction in overall CO2 emissions of up to 90% can be obtained depending on the raw material employed in HVO production. What’s more, compared to most conventional diesel fuels, HVO has an exceptionally low sulphur content and its use leads to lower engine exhaust emissions. Synthetic diesel is widely-available in-service stations across northern Europe and is taking hold as the next-generation fuel. It is 100% fossil-free and 100% recycled. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

GAS TURBINES SIZED 150WM OR GREATER HAVE DOMINATED THE WORLD MARKET UNTIL NOW BUT THOSE SIZED 300MW OR MORE ARE TAKING A LARGER Published annually in partnership with McCoy Power Reports and energy consultant Dora Partners, the Gas Turbine World Market Forecast tracks global industry orders – by OEM market share and model designation – for Heavy Frame, Light Industrial and Aeroderivative gas turbines for Electric Power Utility (EPU) and Oil & Gas (O&G) sectors internationally. The current Market Forecast suggests that on a capacity basis, gas turbines sized 150MW or greater have dominated order activity over the past five years (2017-2022) with units sized 300MWs or more increasingly taking a larger share of the market. Measured on the basis of MWs, order activity in 2020 was down 3.2% over 2019, while Unit orders were up 0.3%. Overall, this was a good result, given ongoing disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, say the anaylsts behind the report On a unit order basis, gas turbines sized 10MW or less have seen their share of the market continue to decrease, and the GTWMF predicts that this trend will continue. The market for small gas turbines under 5MW has ‘almost disappeared due to inroads by reciprocal engines’, says the report. Looking ahead, the retirement of coal-brining facilities worldwide and especially in Europe will mainly benefit large Heavy Frame gas turbines. Aero gas turbines, which provide backup capacity for Renewable energy, will also benefit from higher demand and steady pricing. In the Electric Power Utility Sector unit sales in the 30-40MW range (mobile units) are up and those in the 300MW+ units have rocketed; the 40-150MW range is down over 50%, the report concludes.
IN BRIEF NEW COMBINED HEAT AND POWER PLANT FOR FRANKFURT (ODER) CHINA CHOOSES 9HA.01 GAS TURBINES FOR GUANGMING COMBINED CYCLE PLANT Three 9HA.01 gas turbines fare being supplied by GE to a combined cycle power plant in Guangming, China. The plant is expected to deliver up to 2 GW of electricity to the most populous province in the country, populated by approximately 126 million people. Once the turbines are fully operational the plant will operating commercially by end of 2023, in time to support the retirement of the Guangdong Shajiao coal-fired power complex projected fto be closed by 2025. China is actively working to promote its energy transition including transitioning from coal-based power generation to gas-fired technologies. Over the past decades, coal-fuelled power has fallen from approximately 72.4% in 2005 to 56.8% in 2020 of China’s energy consumption. Harbin Electric will provide steam turbines and generators. The Joint Venture called General Harbin Electric Gas Turbine (Qinhuangdao) Co., Ltd was formed in 2019 between GE and Harbin Electric as a joint effort to focus on heavy duty gas turbine localization, aiming to deliver efficient and reliable support for China natural gas power plants. Ma Jun, Utility Sales general manager of GE Gas Power in China, comments: “Gas can play a significant role in China’s energy future due to its sustainability, flexibility, low capital costs, ability to integrate with carbon capture systems, and rapid deployment capabilities.” Natural gas-fired generators have the lowest CO2 emissions of all fossil power generation fuels and are said to be ideal for countries including China where the need to switch from coal while retaining reliability of supply is paramount. “We are excited to work together with Harbin Electric in support of increasing natural gas-fired power generation in China,” said Ma Jun. GE 9HA.01/9HA.02/7HA.03 gas turbines have the capability to burn up to 50% by volume of hydrogen when blended with natural gas.

MAJOR BENEFITS FOR DATA CENTRE APPLICATIONS OFFERED BY NEW E-FRAME TECHNOLOGY Kohler Power is marketing its new industrial generator enclosure product for its largest KD Series of industrial generator sets. The new eFrame enclosures are engineered to meet the specific requirements of mission-critical applications – primarily data centres – while providing shorter lead times, earlier installation and better service and maintenance access. The eFrame walk-in enclosures holds the Kohler KD Series industrial generators rated 2000 kW and larger. The unit is available in three models – V12 (2000 kW to 2500 kW), V16 (2800 kW to 3250 kW) and V20 (3500 kW to 4000 kW). The units have been designed for high durability and incorporate an all-aluminum skin and frame construction and a fade/ scratch/corrosion-resistant powdered coat exterior. The enclosures meet or exceed 135mph wind load ratings, reports Kohler Power. Brad Meissner, product manager for Kohler Power, comments: “The eFrame walk-in enclosure is ideal for mission critical applications – including data centres, water utilities and healthcare sites – and can be customisable to meet the needs of customers. “We’re the only manufacturer to ensure that the complete design, production, and testing occurs right at our factory. The one-stop approach increases our control of the entire manufacturing and testing process to ensure the highest quality while significantly decreasing lead times, which is very important for data centre customers who operate under tight timelines.” Kohler’s entire power system is a totally integrated package, with all components single-sourced from the Kohler factory including engineering, manufacturing and testing. “It’s the single source philosophy,” explains Meissner. “A customer only has to deal with Kohler. There is no finger pointing, with third party packagers, if something occurs in the field, it can be dealt with in-house here. “This innovation allows us to control our own destiny as well. Especially now, where supply chains are getting very constrained, the more content you own, the more you can control that and the better service you can provide your customers.” www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

HYDROGEN-FUELLED GAS ENGINES WILL POWER ROMANIA’S DATA CENTRES Rolls-Royce has provided mtu 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engines for hydrogen-ready generator sets sold to a Romanian data centre provider.Cloud service provider ClusterPower is developing a US$43 million data centre campus near the southern city of Craiova and has specified mtu power equipment. The 273,000 sq. m campus will scale to a power output of 200 MW, once all five data centres being planned come onstream in 2025, said ClusterPower. Rolls-Royce and its distributor partner Knopf & Wallisch (K&W) supplied three mtu customised and containerised combined cooling, heat and power plant (CCHP) trigeneration units. The mtu 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engines have been designed for quick ramp-up and ramp-down and are said to offer a wide-range of load operations. The gensets are ‘hydrogen-ready,’ with the capacity to use blends of 25% hydrogen along with natural gas - and also be upgraded to pure hydrogen engines at a future date. The first of the five data centres has opened already. Here, the mtu CCHP units supply electricity, heat and cooling for the building and the infrastructure. Employing the gas gensets as prime power producing electricity while using the main grid as backup is said to be their ‘unique selling point’ (UPS). A highly efficient solution has been applied to capture most of the exhaust heat from the system with conversion chillers.
JAPAN PURCHASES SEVEN C65 MICROTURBINE SYSTEMS FOR INDUSTRY
NEW 1300KW ULTRA LOW EMISSIONS PACKAGE WILL ‘SAVE ENVIRONMENT’
Capstone Green Energy Corp. has confirmed that its distributor in Japan, Kanamoto, has secured a contract to provide seven C65 microturbine systems to a Japanese firm operating in the chemical industry. Out of 44 Capstone units currently in operation at the Japanese site, the new systems will replace seven units which have reached 80,000 hours mark for continuous service. The units were previously covered by a 10-year Factory Protection Plan (FPP) which ended in December 2021. The new systems will be fuelled by high-pressure natural gas (HPNG) and have been specially designed to provide combined heat and power (CHP) to providing maximum efficiency for the production process. Simultaneously, the waste heat produced by the microturbines will be captured and used for drying processes required by the chemical plant, a site which has been in operationsince 2002. Once shipped, the new systems are expected to be fully commissioned by July 2022. This is the only installation in Japan where 44 units have been installed in one single location. Kanamoto’s manager, Atsushi Isono, explains: “The Capstone Green Energy microturbine’s lightweight and compact footprint met the customer’s site requirements while using the clean exhaust gas directly in the drying furnace. This perfectly matches the customer’s thermal requirements. Despite the harsh environment in which this continuous-duty application operates, the customer feels confident in the long-term viability of the system due to the FPP contract in place. The 80,000 hours of o peration and FPP contract is what allowed us to win a second end-of -life replacement contract.”
A new 1300 kW Ultra-Low Emissions Package from Aggreko is said to reduce up to 99% of all controlled emissions from the average generator exhaust stream. Said to fit any project situation, the Ultra-Low Emissions Package has been designed to meet strict U.S. federal air quality restrictions for faster deployment and long-term use while - at the same time - significantly reducing environmental impact. The system’s emission levels are certified to be 90% lower than the best reciprocating engine and turbine available on the market, and 99% lower than the federal limits, the company said. Aggreko’s Ultra-Low Emissions Package has been specifically designed to provide 1300 kW of continuous power output and is equipped with a selective catalyst reducer (SCR) and an oxidation catalyst which converts carbon-monoxide

MARKET REPORT
MARCH 2022
HOW THE GENERATOR SET MARKET IS BEING AFFECTED BY RUSSIA’S CURRENT WAR IN UKRAINE
T
he sanctions imposed by the West against Russian interests have had a severe effect on the genset market in almost every sector. Sales into Russia, as well as day-to-day operations such as manufacturing, finding spares parts, shipping and maintenance contracts are all now at a standstill. The biggest impact comes in the form of the rouble’s loss of purchasing power, which has plummeted against the US dollar, reducing the value of contracts and investments in real terms. Russia is a relevant global player in the export of metals, agricultural goods, and energy, and sanctions have affected the marginal pricing in global markets. The country also has a large domestic market for ‘homegrown’ Russian-made generators sets but these invariably rely on parts and electronics systems provided by companies in the West. The United States does not suffer a relevant impact from sanctions to Russia but this happens indirectly as consumer prices soar due to rising energy and food prices - factors which invariably affect industry. In the current tensions with Russia the European Union has far more to lose than the US. According to Eurostat, Russia is the fifth-largest trade partner of the European Union, with imports of $177.9 billion and exports of $104.1 billion. There has been a considerable reliance on Russian natural gas for power generations, particularly in countries like the Czech Republic and Germany. Eleven EU countries import more than 50% of their natural gas from Russia. For many it would be impossible to offset the flow of Russian gas with LNG brought in by vehicles - as opposed to using pipelines - even if they were willing to accept prohibitive prices. The global economy suffers from the indirect impact. As the sides slug it out in Ukraine clear differences are emerging between Western countries and the nations which align naturally with Russia and China. The effect of the current war in Ukraine has been to move some European economies closer to ‘stagflation’, and the price of fuel and power grid uncertainties will undoubtedly have an effect on the demand for generator sets and could lead to renewables resources such as PV and hydro gaining the upper hand. There may be an increased demand for gensets within Russian but the European Union, US, UK and allies have agreed to exclude a number of Russian banks from Swift, a key international payment system used by thousands of financial institutions.
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
RUSSIA’S INVASION OF UKRAINE HAS BROUGHT WITH IT ECONOMIC SANCTIONS INVOLVING THE SHUTDOWN OF TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF TRANSACTIONS, SOME AFFECTING THE GENSET SECTOR. Swift is the global financial artery which allows the smooth and rapid transfer of money across borders. Trillions of dollars change hands between companies and governments. More than 1% of those messages are thought to involve Russian payments. Swift was created by American and European banks, which did not want a single institution developing their own system and having a monopoly. The network is now jointly-owned by more than 2,000 banks and financial institutions. It is overseen by the National Bank of Belgium, in partnership with major central banks around the world including the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England. When Iran was banned from Swift in 2012, as part of sanctions over its nuclear programme it lost almost half
of its oil export revenues and 30% of foreign trade. The Parkovaya Data Centre in central Ukraine currently relies on two F G Wilson P1375E3 and four P1700P1 generator sets runs by the data centre operator. Ukraine’s electricity system remains at high risk of collapse. While electricity demand had been projected to double by 2030, outdated thermal production facilities and higher fuel costs has already made the Ukrainian electricity system vulnerable. Even before the invasion Ukraine’s generation facilities were only running at 38% capacity (as a result of old, inefficient plants and poor transmission lines). An up-to-date a power management regime would have to form a key part of Ukraine’s infrastructure during its reconstruction phase.

OTTO FUCHS FACTORY FEATURES A POWERCONTROLLED COGENERATION POWER PLANT
T
he automotive division of OTTO FUCHS KG is known for its forged aluminum wheels in the premium segment, the so-called Fuchs wheels. In the new surface centre in Meinerzhagen, Germany, a cogeneration power plant equipped with an MWM genset delivers heat and power to one of the most modern paint plants on the market. Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Porsche, or Rolls Royce - marvelling at these wonders of automotive technology, you have doubtlessly noticed the exquisite forged aluminum wheels made by OTTO FUCHS. The market leader in forged aluminum wheels is based in Meinerzhagen in the west of the Sauerland region. In the nearby Grünewald industrial zone, OTTO FUCHS has invested about €80 million in a new surface centre: OTTO FUCHS Surface Technology GmbH & Co. KG. Here, the Fuchs wheels get their special finish. The state-of-the-art coating plant is connected to a high-bay warehouse and a shipping and logistics centre. The building application for the new plant included the request for permission to set up a cogeneration power plant to generate electricity on site. The power-controlled cogeneration power plant with an MWM TCG 2020 V12 genset and an output of 999 kW currently generates about 50 percent of the power required on site. Paul J. Plikat, who was involved in the planning of the new cogeneration power plant as head of the “Grünewald energy industry“‘ project, commented: ”We have had a cogeneration power

plant with an MWM TCG 2032 V16 genset in the main OTTO FUCHS factory since 2010.” “All our experiences with this model have been positive, both with regard to the performance and reliability of the engine and in terms of the good collaboration with the manufacturer and the MWM Service. “For us, these were good reasons to opt for another MWM gas genset for the new cogeneration power plant.“ The power-controlled MWM gas genset runs in flex operation, adapted to the factory‘s shifts.” Vladimir Giebert, Project Engineer Supply, Factory Planning, and Maintenance at OTTO FUCHS, commented: ”In this way, we can effectively control the power generation in accordance with the demand in the factory.“ Giebert explains that the exhaust heat from the power generation is used in its entirety, especially during the cold season. Apart from heating the factory, many surface coating processes also depend on heat, e.g. the pre-treatment or special washing systems. For the cogeneration power plant in the Grünewald factory, the planning and rollout of the energy supply was handled by the company itself. ”During the planning and rollout stages, the challenge was to seamlessly involve a dozen suppliers in the face of a relatively tight time schedule,“ says Giebert. The go-live procedure took place in spring 2020. Vladimir Giebert underlines the good co-operation between OTTO FUCHS and Caterpillar Energy Solutions: ”As expected, the collaboration was very pleasant and professional. Minor initial difficulties were quickly resolved in a competent manner by the MWM Service in collaboration with our maintenance personnel.
Apart from the good collaboration with Caterpillar Energy Solutions, our team members also played their part in ensuring that the project was successfully completed within a short period of time.“ The cogeneration power plant is not the only heat generator at OTTO FUCHS Surface Technology in Grünewald. A natural gas boiler and the heat recovery system of the compressed-air supply are hydraulically connected to the cogeneration power plant. These individual heat generators are controlled by a central control that the TEM control of the cogeneration power plant is also connected to. One of the challenges encountered during the installation was to ensure the efficient networking of these various components. After some minor initial glitches, everything is now on track, and the annual usage amounts to more than 70 percent. The MWM TCG 3020, successor model of the TCG 2020, generator set effectively balances efficiency and reliability. The genset delivers up to 18 percent more output than its predecessor, though its dimensions are almost the same. Additionally, the new model features long service intervals with up to 80,000 operating hours until the next general overhaul (if the gas quality is high) and a total efficiency of more than 87 percent (with natural gas). www.mwm.net

A COMMON SOLUTION TO ELECTRICITY AND HEAT REQUIREMENTS WITH A COGEN SYSTEM
T
he global energy crisis is expanding its sphere of influence with each passing day. Accordingly, the increase in the need for economical, high quality and sustainable energy brings new solutions. Cogeneration and trigeneration systems, which meet electricity, heating and cooling needs at the same time, draw attention as an economical and environmental investment. If the analysis, project design and installation of these technologies is all done correctly, it is possible to achieve energy savings of up to 90%. As the first domestic company to manufacture cogeneration and trigeneration systems in Turkey, Teksan has successfully implemented these systems in many hospitals, factories and shopping malls where energy needs are high. Cogeneration and trigeneration systems enable high quality and cheap electricity production. The cogeneration and trigeneration systems, which ensure the efficient use of energy, are based on the principle that energy is produced in the same place where it is consumed independently from the electricity network and the excess energy is used for heating or cooling purposes. While only heating is provided in the cogeneration system, the heating and cooling needs are both met in the trigeneration system. Cogen-trigen systems, where energy efficiency reaches 90% are beneficial for both the pocket and the environment. They protects the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Factors such as the search for alternative energy sources due to the increasing energy costs and the deepening energy crisis, the need for clean and sustainable energy are expected to play a major role in the future of the cogeneration market and increase the interest in these systems in the coming months. Correct project design and application are of great importance in obtaining the desired efficiency in cogen-trigen systems. With its experience in the projects it has undertaken, its engineering power and its expert team, Teksan has successfully implemented many cogeneration and trigeneration projects in different fields, especially healthcare.

COGENERATION AND TRIGENERATION SYSTEMS, WHICH BRING A COMMON SOLUTION TO THE ELECTRICITY, HEATING AND COOLING NEEDS, ELIMINATE ENERGY LOSSES BY PRODUCING AND CONSUMING ENERGY IN THE SAME PLACE. THANKS TO THIS SYSTEM, IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO KEEP EMISSION LEVELS UNDER CONTROL AND REDUCE ONE’S CARBON FOOTPRINT. “ www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
Teksan Marketing Board Member Ebru Ata Tuncer agrees with the concept that energy efficiency achieved thanks to the cogen-trigen systems - which produce electricity at a lower cost compared to the mains electricity - provides significant gains for Turkey’s economy. Ebru Ata Tuncer comments: “Cogeneration and trigeneration systems, which bring a common solution to the electricity, heating and cooling needs, eliminate energy losses by producing and consuming energy in the same place. “Thanks to this system, it is also possible to keep emission levels under control and reduce one’s carbon footprint. “Cogeneration and trigeneration systems, which are preferred in areas with high energy needs such as hospitals, factories and shopping malls draw attention as an economic investment as well as being environmentally friendly. “Teksan has successfully implemented and continues to apply its cogeneration-trigeneration systems in many state hospitals. In these locations we have long years of experience, project experience, engineering power and expert teamwork. We also have important references abroad in this particular field.
Our systems are used successfully in large projects in different countries such as Kazakhstan and Nigeria.” He explains: “In addition to hospitals, we have successfully implemented cogeneration and trigeneration projects in many shopping malls where our technology is preferred. “As a company we offer tailor-made solutions and engineering power. We provide the energy and heating solutions for our factory in Istanbul with the cogeneration system we have already established. “With our cogeneration and trigeneration systems, we will maintain our claim in the sector in the coming years as well.” Teksan has a mission to deliver uninterrupted power solutions to the people through sustainable improvement and innovation and the latest designs. Teksan installs high quality diesel, natural and biogas driven generator sets, mobile lighting towers, gasoline generators, cogeneration-trigeneration solutions and hybrid power systems designed to meet and even exceed the expectations of the customer. www.teksan.com/en/cogeneration-trigeneration

A
s a global manufacturer with more than 75 years of experience in the alternator industry, Mecc Alte has become adept at spotting powergen trends. The latest trend is towards meeting power demands by providing an integrated package which allows its clients to fit the increasingly complex requirements of the application. “Power generation is becoming much more about complete solutions than products,” says Mecc Alte’s Sales and Marketing Director, Jonathan Stokes. “We’re creating value by supplying Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with alternators, controllers, battery chargers and governors required for their generators. The result: an integrated solution that very closely matches the unique demands of each and every power requirement.” The company’s independent status has won it a great deal of trust from the power community over the years. “We’ve never built complete gensets, so people know that we’re not in competition with them” says Jonathan. “As a result we’ve earned our reputation as a trusted advisor. When clients come to us with a problem, we provide a straightforward – and sometimes very innovative – answer.” The recognition of a growing demand from the market for more integrated, packaged solutions has led to the development of a number of new products that make it easier to meet the need. A totally new, fully-integrated Digital CANbus Series solution – SMART Link - integrates power management and monitoring into a single platform. When it’s paired with a Mecc Alte digital alternator and a Mecc Alte controller, the results are impressive. “By providing simple safe access to all essential genset components, we enable true digital regulation and real time measurement, as well as smart diagnostics, rapid setting via the controller, and enhanced safety – all in one human-machine interface or HMI,” says Jonathan. A flurry of other new products are being launched by the company which are also designed to be easily integrated into complete solutions for OEMs. The next generation of the company’s highly successful C-Type series consists of two new models – the ECP4 and ECP30, adding to a range that is designed to deliver a high power to size ratio. As with all C-Type alternators, the new models benefit from Mecc Alte MAUX (Mecc Alte Auxillary Winding System) installed as standard. This power boost facility enables every C-Type alternator to take an overload of >300% forced current for up to 20 seconds – perfect for motor starting requirements.

32MW OF DIESEL GENERATORS FOR DATA CENTRE IN SAUDI ARABIA IN US$10M CONTRACT WIN
T
he diesel generator company Enrogen, based in York, UK, has signed a deal to provide 32MW of diesel generators to a large data centre in Saudi Arabia. The sixteen 2.5MVA generators will provide backup for a new data centre being built by a “global computer company” based in Saudi Arabia’s north-east region. Media speculation suggests the customer is likely to be Google, which last month announced a new cloud region based in Dammam, a city in Saudi Arabia’s eastern region. This is Enrogen’s biggest ever deal and will significantly increase turnover at the family firm which was founded in 2005 by brothers-in-law James Brown and Gavin Wilkinson. The company is building new capacity at its factory in Pocklington near York, and will be employing more staff. “It’s already won us the ‘Exporter of the Year’ 2021 award from the Association of Manufacturing Power Systems,” comments sales director Kevin Griffiths. “There’s no doubt this deal will get us noticed in this industry.” Griffiths hopes for more Middle Eastern deals as a result of this development, seeing it as a “real growth centre at the moment.” “It’s a specialist job which not many companies in the UK can actually do,” explains Griffiths. “There are a lot of generator manufacturers who supply basic, off-the shelf solutions, whereas we build our generator sets to suit what each client wants, something which is outside the comfort zones of many other firms.” He explains: “The UK used to be one of the biggest generator manufacturers in the world and this accolade has slowly declined as companies have gradually moved their production to China or Eastern Europe. However, we hope to play our part in putting UK back on the map and champion British manufacturing, and hopefully, this project win is just the start of that.” The Saudi job is being handled by a UK intermediary which commissioned Enrogen based on its ability to put together a bespoke backup system. The project will use sixteen 2.5 MVA, 16-cylinder (65-litres) 2700hp engines, which will be housed in acoustic containers at the data centre. Enrogen says the facility is being built at a large new business park with its own road and rail network. “The site is basically in the middle of the desert but we’ve seen computer-generated images of what it will look like in the future. It’s going to be a huge business park featuring all sorts of companies and even served by its own railway network,” said Griffiths. Enrogen sourced 60Hz engines for the job from Mitsubishi and will build and test the backup systems in the UK, before dismantling them and shipping them to Saudi Arabia to be rebuilt at the data centre. The sets are acoustically treated to a low noise rating. Special features of the package include: a Power panel with controls integrated inside each generator set’s container, a Baffle reduction system for -30db.. Sand media filters louvres and self-contained fuel tanks with leakage bunding and automatic overfill protection system are also being provided. Enrogen has designed-in engine room heating to ensure startup in the cold and a dedicated power outlet busbar due to the great number of conductors per phase. The installation will also feature overvoltage protection, Loadbank Test facility, enclosure coating according to the ISO 12944 norm, in a C5I finish in the
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
finish in the colour requested by the client. Enrogen specialises in the manufacture, fitting and ongoing and emergency maintenance of diesel backup generators. Its generator sets help ensure critical systems can be maintained in the event of power outages at high-risk facilities including super-prisons and hospitals. This latest deal will help ensure the integrity of significant amounts of data, stored in the Cloud by the computer firm which has commissioned the installation at a new business park which is so big it will be serviced by a new road and rail network in the middle of the desert. Enrogen has seen consistent yearon-year growth since it was established bin 2005 and has remained buoyant despite the recent challenges caused by the global coronavirus pandemic, this latest commission has taken it truly global. “Doing a good job of this install, which represents our biggest project ever, will hopefully pave the way for further commissions out in other parts of the Middle East, which is a real growth centre at the moment, particularly for areas like computing and data housing, and financial services, because – as well as undergoing significant growth itself – it is ideally placed to act as a conduit for supplying key infrastructure services
[Above - left-to-right] Kevin Griffiths, James Brown and Gavin Wilkinson. to developing economies nearby, explains Griffiths. Enrogen was one of the smaller companies to pitch for the Saudi job, which is being handled by a UK i ntermediary, and the contract was won based on the company’s unique bespoke manufacturing expertise. The project requires generators running on 60-hertz power, which are more common in the US and Saudi Arabia, rather than the 50-hertz systems which are more common across the world, and Enrogen had to source the special Mitsubishi engines from Japan to meet these alternative power requirements. Backup generator sets like those manufactured by Enrogen are designed to ‘keep the lights on’ at critical sites if they experience power outages which last beyond what their battery backup systems are designed to cope with, and represent crucial kit in a world where so many functions are controlled by sophisticated computer systems. “It’s clearly an important project to Saudi Arabia and that makes it a big thing for us too,” continued Griffiths. “Dealing with global exporting to the other side of the world has represented new territory and a learning curve for us.” www.enrogen.com

MUNICH DATA CENTRE IS SUPPLIED WITH TWO BESPOKE LOW SOUND EMERGENCY GENSETS
G
enesal Energy has supplied two emergency generator sets to one of the most important data centres in Europe, located on the outskirts of the city of Munich, Germany. The gensets have been designed to guarantee constant power supply in the event of a mains failure or any other potential setback. Data Centres or Data Processing Centres (DPC) are complex facilities which hold modern computer equipment and where any failure in power supply can be a serious issue, as all the information contained in these giant servers would be left unprotected. For this reason, DPCs need continuous and constant power supply at all times. A generator set is its greatest guarantee of protection, which is where the client company turned to Genesal Energy to provide experts in installing generator sets adapted to these facilities. A company spokesman commented: “For this client specifically, at Genesal Energy we opted for made-tomeasure generator sets: we designed a bespoke energy solution. “The result translated into two generator sets distinguished by their low sound levels -as they must operate in a great office area- and the fact that they are leakage-proof against any polluting spills (diesel, oil and coolant liquid), as established by the strict environmental legislation in Germany.” During the manufacturing process, the gensets were placed into two 20-foot containers, with two air inlet and outlet baffles of 1200mm in length to lower the gensets’ sound levels by 30 decibels. Furthermore, the exhaust silencers were mounted inside the containers in order to isolate the sound outlet (certification was carried out by an external company). The sets provided were the GEN550PC + GEN850PC and the clients specified enerator sets with low sound levels, as they were to be located in the middle of an office area. Special features included with the gensets were: •Power panel integrated inside the generator set’s container. •Control panel integrated inside the generator set’s container. •Baffles system for -30db. External parts in stainless steel. •Motorised louvres. •Fuel tanks isupplied with the units have to offer a considerable capacity. The tanks had to come with a with leakage collection tray. These fuel tanks also had to fully incorporate an automatic overfill protection.

The power generation engines from Scania are based on a robust design with an optimised cylinder block containing wet cylinder liners, which can be exchanged easily. Individual cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder promotes repairability and fuel economy, reports Genesal. The engine is equipped with a Scania-developed Engine Management System, EMS, to ensure the control of all aspects
related to engine performance. The injection system is based on electronically controlled unit injectors, which provides good fuel economy and a high torque. The engine can be fitted with many accessories such as air cleaners, PTOs and cooling package, to suit a variety of installations. The genset provides PRP/STP (kVA): 500/550, Emerg. STP (kVA/kWe): 550/440 , R.P.M.: 1800, 4,218kgs, offering Voltage (V): 480/277 - 440/254 - 380/220 - 220/127 208/120. The diesel GEN880HC-IN, on the other hand, uses a MITSUBISHI S12A2-PTA engine. Efficient and requiring low maintenance, the Mitsubishi SA-series engines are fuel efficient because of Mitsubishi’s original direct injection system and turbo. According to the manufacturer, routine maintenance has become easier than ever before, with increased intervals for changing the oil. New materials in the exhaust system have a positive effect on durability, says Mitsubishi. This set’s specifications are as follows: Frequency: 50 HZ, Power: XL (826-3900kVA). A Soundproof model (KVA: 880/704), this offers PRP/STP (kVA): 800/880, Emerg. STP (kVA/kWe): 880/704 and produces a voltage of 400/230 - 415/240 380/220. www.genesalenergy.com

UK HOSPITAL NHS TRUST BUYS SIX PRIME-RATED GENSETS FOR BACKUP POWER SUPPLY
N
orthampton General Hospital NHS Trust provides general acute services for a population of 380,000 to people living throughout whole of Northamptonshire, a population of 684,000. The Trust also provides other services to a wider population of 880,000 who live in Northamptonshire & parts of Buckinghamshire. The generator contract won by UK-based WB Power Services (WBPS) for Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust involved the supply of 6x prime rated generating sets to be installed onsite, supplying power totalling 11.2MVA and work involving 2x Perkins refurbs. WBPS also supplied a fuel distribution system. Over 200,000 litres of fuel were provided via newly-installed fuel technology. The company was also responsible for the removal, transportation and refurbishment of existing generator sets at the location. The generating sets were installed in existing plant rooms with significant space restrictions. The installation team also dealt with sound restrictions, control systems and electrical installation. A spokesman commented: “An incredibly diverse and bespoke project for the WB Power team, the installed solution comprised of incumbent equipment removal, civil works and the installation of 6 x KOHLER primerated generating sets in existing plant rooms. The generating set was installed along with accompanying ancillary equipment such as fuel tanks, plant room attenuation equipment, exhaust flues, switchgear and electrical installation and migration works. Phase one of the project was the supply, installation and commissioning of three KOHLER T2500 2273kVA Mitsubishi prime rated generating sets complete with a set- mounted ComAp control system, offering both set to set and set to mains synchronising capabilities, situated in an existing plant room. Prior to their installation, the existing generators and accompanying ancillary equipment was to be removed. Once all existing generators and ancillary equipment had been removed, modifications were made to the existing layout of the plant room to allow for the installation of an additional generator, in addition to the existing two. Following this, installed equipment included: * Acoustic plantroom equipment (75dba @ 1m) * Three KOHLER T2500 2273kVA Mitsubishi generators with accompanying bunded slab fuel tanks, bespoke pipework and flue systems and remote radiators, situated on the roof. Due to the healthcare environment, there were strict noise levels which the newly- installed generating sets
www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk
had to achieve. To accomplish this, WB Power proposed the supply and installation of exhaust gas silencers, which would achieve a sound level of 75 dBA @ 1m. The three flues were required to be extended to roof level and followed the route of the existing flue. Phase two of the project was the removal of two existing Perkins generator sets. Following their removal from the existing plant room, the generators were transported back to the WBPS testing facility in Ilkeston to be refurbished. Following THE completion of the installation, the sets were commissioned using a resistive load bank test. This was conducted by WB Power’s in-house commissioning team, with one of its Commissioning Engineers onsite conducting the tests over a 10-day period.
Whilst onsite the engineer was also able to deliver formal training the hospital engineers. The project was delivered on time and on budget. All predefined hospital requirements were delivered, meaning the project was a great success for WB Power Services. WB Power Services (WBPS) was first established in 1983 and since then it has grown in size and service capability. Today, it provides critical power services to some of the UK’s most important businesses and organisations, ensuring essential services are protected. A spokesman for the company commented: “We are proud to retain our family values on a national scale as we strive to be the biggest and the best power generation company in the UK.” www.wbpsltd.co.uk

ROTHERHAM HOSPITAL SET TO BENEFIT FROM ADVANCED BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM
V
eolia, working through its specialist energy team, has now commissioned a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the UK’s 500bed Rotherham Hospital as part of a 20- year Energy Performance Contract (EPC). The 500kWh storage capacity will contribute to targeted EPC savings of over £1 million per year, provide an energy income, increase resilience of the energy supply, and enable the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust to cut carbon emissions by 49,620 tonnes. The EPC used by the Trust is the NHS standard performance contract, managed, procured, financed and monitored for its lifetime by the Carbon and Energy Fund With a growing sustainable energy supply in the energy mix, grid resiliency is important to manage the variable availability of sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar power. To counter these variations the battery system effectively balances the output of renewable energy sources which operate in a less predictable manner compared to traditional power stations. When discharging at peak time, the battery displaces the marginal generator which is still fossil fuelled power for most of the year. In this way it will perform a key role in the transition to a sustainable decarbonised electrical supply. The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) comprises multiple battery cells that store electrical energy produced for use at a later time. Based on the latest lithium-ion technology the battery unit is capable of delivering 500kWh, equivalent to the energy output from 130,000 standard AA size batteries. The technology enables the Trust to take advantage of reduced electricity bills by discharging power, when the demand is highest, which reduces imported electrical consumption and peak electrical import charges. Because of its unique reaction speed, and fast acting controls, it provides continuous stability for the National Grid by adjusting power flows at each millisecond to balance the surplus or lack of energy on the network. Engineered into the electrical infrastructure and CHP system by Veolia, the BESS enables the Trust to gain income from the grid by exporting power when there is less power being generated than used by consumers, and also for absorbing power when more power is being generated than is being used by consumers. This reduces electrical bills via the BESS’s ability to discharge power at these key times and reduce imported electrical consumption and import charges.

This adds to the financial benefit gained from the fast frequency response through grid stabilisation. Control takes place automatically via a third party Aggregator, which manages electricity assets to counter load imbalances in response to changes in energy demands. By operating in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) mode the system also delivers greater electrical power supply resilience for critical healthcare activities, such as operating theatres, by providing power if grid supply is lost. Commenting on the latest renewable energy project, John Abraham, Chief Operating Officer - Veolia UK & Ireland - Industrial, Water & Energy said: “Achieving net zero carbon will require a sustainable energy supply that can replicate and replace fossil fuelled power stations. “To do this we believe flexibility and demand management of decentralized energy is the key to addressing this issue. Backed by the energy saving upgrades that are part of the energy performance contract, the
new BESS at Rotherham Hospital is another key step in achieving this goal, and helps the NHS to become more sustainable and focus budgets on patient care.” One of the most forward-thinking trusts in the UK, the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is at the leading edge of health service reform and is an Associate Teaching Hospital of the University of Sheffield and has an active research programme. The Urgent and Emergency Care Centre deals with around 105,000 attendances, and there are approximately 30,000 day cases, 40,000 inpatients and 250,000 outpatient attendances at the Trust each year. Veolia currently provides energy management to over 100 hospitals in the UK which support the healthcare for around 8.1 million inpatients each year, and reduce CO2 emissions in the healthcare sector by 120,000 tonnes. KOHLER LAUNCHES A RANGE OF POWER OPTIMISED DESIGN SOLUTIONS TO ENABLE WALK-IN ACCESS TO HIGH-POWER GENSETS
FRER’S XDB3 SERIES OF EARTH LEAKAGE RELAYS The Type B earth leakage relay is an essential part for earth fault protection equipment on an installation where several switch mode power supplies are fed from the AC supply. The nature of a switch mode power supply is such that it may lead to high frequency, Harmonic interference and DC leakage currents elements on the AC network which will not be detected by an AC Type A or Type F earth leakage relay. This may leave to a risk of fire, damage to the installation or harm to operators. Frer’s XDB3 series earth leakage relays Type B are designed to measure the DC, AC and high frequency leakage current. The continuous display of the system parameters, leakage current, alarm status, frequency and harmonic level on the LCD display makes it is possible to continuously monitor the insulation state and to program the preventive maintenance in order to help avoid unexpected power breaks. The unit’s ain functions include: Continuous digital indication of the leakage current: total RMS, AC fundamental, AC high frequency. The FRER type B earth leakage relays (series X DB3), designed to intuitively and automatically detect leakage currents, allow the isolation status to be displayed continuously through the multi-color display. Just one sensor (TDB series) connected on the network is required to measure AC and DC networks, with a DC-10kHz band, and a resolution up to 1mA. They have an integrated “demagnetisation” function with zero offset of the DC, which is automatically activated. https://craft.co/frer HIMOINSA DESIGNS A NEW CONCEPT OF GENERATOR SETS FOR STATIONARY APPLICATIONS HIMOINSA presents the new HS Stationary Range which has a modular and versatile design which incorporates all the features required to make it one of the most competitive products on the market for stationary applications. Data centre power systems supplier Kohler is marketing a range of walk-in Power Optimised Design Solutions (PODS) in response to the increased market demand for high-power gensets. They offer the highest standards of performance, reliability, robustness, safety, modularity, and competitiveness. Crucially, their size allows for enough internal cooling power to accommodate Kohler’s KD SERIES generators, giving customers the power to utilise the most powerful generators on the market without compromising on installation and maintenance. The walk-in PODS have generous spacing with a 4m width and height for the base module. The enclosures offer optimal access to different elements of the diesel genset allowing personnel to perform all operations and maintenance tasks with ease. Single swing doors with locks and anti-panic bars facilitate daily access into the enclosure. A push-button located near the access doors controls the interior lighting system. Adherence to noise standards was a critical design consideration, with 85 dB(A) sound reduction at 1m, with 75 and 65 dB(A) configurations also available. Soundproofing panels are made of mineral wool with an M1-class fire rating covered by glass fibre and metal sheet. Rain barrier grilles fitted with an anti-volatile barrier protect air inlets and outlets from harsh weather conditions. A specialised primer coat and polyurethane finish enhance the durability of the enclosures. Kohler supplies the walk-in PODS from its Brest facility in France, which committed to over $6M of investment in 2021 to enhance manufacturing capacity and optimise the logistics and transport for these larger enclosures. www.kohler-sdmo.com
