THE LINE & ITS GIANT GREEN POWERPLANT ‘OFFICIALLY DROPPED’
Saudi Arabia’s plans for the mirror-clad desert metropolis called the Line have been officially scaled down and the project, which was envisaged to stretch 105 miles (170km) is expected to reach just a mile and a half by 2030.
Initially presented as a linear city and home to about 9 million people on a footprint of just 13 sq miles, the Line is part of a wider Neom project. Now at least one contractor has already begun dismissing workers.
In the initial plan electricity to power homes, industry and infrastructure from the Line would come from the Saudi electricity grid supplemented by solar panels mounted on the exterior of the Line’s buildings.
Its heat and electricity infrastructure and electrically-powered transport are likely to be dramatically scaled down.
The project, which had been slated to cost US$1.5tn (£1.2tn), was pitched as a reinvention of urban design but some who have worked on the project have been describing it as “untethered from reality”.
“
THE GRANDIOSE LINE PROJECT HAS NOW BEEN REDUCED TO JUST A MILEAND-A-HALF
A few hundred metres wide, the uniquely-powered zero-carbon city had been promoted as ‘the future of accessible urban planning with amenities for residents within close walking distance’ to accommodation and districts connected by one of the world’s fastest trains. The plan was to have no roads, cars or emissions; the structure would have run on 100% renewable energy and served as template for energy-efficient cities for the 22nd Century.
One commentator explained: “The Line had been designed to be an entire city composed of two parallel, 656-foot-wide (200-metre-wide) skyscrapers, each 106 miles (170 kilometres) long and 1,640 feet (500 metres) high — higher than most of the world’s tallest skyscrapers — stretching across the northwest part of Saudi Arabia near the Red Sea.”
The construction deadline was viewed as part of a larger countrywide improvement plan dubbed Vision 2030 - a scheme intended to draw 100 million annual visitors and keep Saudi Arabia in the running against travel hot spots like its Gulf neighbours of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Plans were developed to build a network of airports as well as the world’s largest green energy plant. The shelving of the project now leaves India as the location of the biggest green energy plant on the planet. Being built right now it is five times the size of Paris and will be visible from space. When completed the world’s biggest energy plant will produce enough electricity to power Switzerland.
AGEL is building the sprawling solar and wind power plant in the western Indian state of Gujarat at a cost of about US$20 billion. It will be the world’s biggest renewable park when finished in 2029.

30MW DATA CENTRE PROJECT IN HOA LAC, VIETNAM, ORDERS POWERPLANT
POWERPLANT: GENSETS WILL PROVIDE EMERGENCY ENERGY FOR DATA CENTRE
Installers have delivered 22 MTU 20V 4000 DS3300 gensets for a new data centre in Frankfurt, Germany. These have been integrated at the site by partner company Zwart Techniek. These gensets will provide a total backup power of 68 MVA across two buildings, ensuring uninterrupted operations and reliability for a valued client. Recently the first genset was delivered onsite.
Data centres are major users of electrical power. Rack upon rack of computer servers can consume up to 300 watts of electricity for each square foot of floor space, which adds up to a lot of electric power consumed every hour of every day, 365-days-a-year. In addition, servers give off that energy as heat, which must be taken away by the facility’s air conditioning system. Then, to ensure customers have reliable service even during a utility outage, data facilities require a backup power system which includes UPSs and standby generators.
The mtu Series 4000 diesel generator sets have been installed and have worked successfully at data centres, hospitals, airports, industrial plants, residential buildings, public facilities, decentralised power stations, microgrids, hybrid solutions and numerous other applications around the world.
They are available in six different power ratings, including standby, prime and continuous power. The mtu Series 4000 diesel gensets cover the range from 1,600 to 4,000 kVA (50 Hz) and from 1,125 to 3,250 kWe (60 Hz). They ‘meet the highest quality, performance and fuel efficiency demands and continue to define the benchmark for excellence’, reports the manufacturer.
Phu Thai Cat has provided backup diesel generators for a 30MW data centre in Hoa Lac, VietNam. This data centre in Hoa Lac now has a total electrical capacity of 30 MW, reflecting its array of more than 2,400 racks.
With 30 MW, this data centre features the largest electrical capacity currently in Vietnam, higher than the centres of some other units, which have a capacity of only 6-12MW.
Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) only recently launched its eighth and most extensive data centre at the Hoa Lac High-Tech Park, signifying a substantial advancement in Vietnam’s data infrastructure capacity.
Covering an area of 23,000 square metres and furnished with 2,000 rack cabinets, the Hoa Lac Data Centre stands as a pioneering achievement in Vietnam’s technological landscape.
This facility, a testament to significant investments in the country’s technological backbone, signifies a transformative moment in Vietnam’s data capabilities. This data centre has also achieved an Uptime Tier III certification for its impeccable design, construction, and operational sustainability. This prestigious certification ensures that the facility maintains resilience and seamless operation, even during maintenance and upgrades.
VNPT currently operates a total of eight data centres across various strategic locations, including Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City.

20MW H2 READY GENERATORS PEAK POWER STATION IN THE UK
Thanks to Clarke Energy, Drumcross will soon become the 12th operational site in the Forsa fleet, utilising fast start, high-efficiency, H2-ready generators.
Once up and running, the site will be capable of exporting 20MW of electricity in the UK at short notice to the local distribution network during times of high demand and low renewable output, efficiently supporting security of supply during the energy transition.
Peaking power plants, also known as peaker plants, and occasionally just “peakers”, are power plants which generally run only when there is a high demand, known as peak demand, for electricity.
Because they supply power only occasionally, the power supplied commands a much higher price per kilowatt hour than base load power. Peak load power plants are dispatched in combination with base load power plants, which supply a dependable and consistent amount of electricity, to meet the minimum demand.
Although historically peaking power plants were frequently used in conjunction with coal baseload plants, peaking plants are now used less commonly.
Combined cycle gas turbine plants have two or more cycles, the first of which is very similar to a peaking plant, with the second running on the waste heat of the first.
This type of plant is often capable of rapidly starting up, albeit at reduced efficiency, and then over some hours transitioning to a more efficient baseload generation mode.

3.5 MW NATURAL GAS FIRED POWER STATION INSTALLED IN NIGERIA
UZBEKISTAN: 4.6 MW CHP PLANT FOR A DISTRICT HEATING PROJECT
Why does Uzbekistan need district heating? Winter in the country, from December to February, is cold, especially in the north: the average temperature in January is around -5 °C in the northernmost areas (the Aral Sea and the northern part of the Kyzyl Kum Desert), while it’s slightly above freezing (0 °C or 32 °F) in the central cities of the ancient Silk Road (Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara).
Only in the extreme south (see Termez), winter is quite mild, in fact the average in January goes up to 5 °C (41 °F). However, the whole country can be reached by cold waves of Siberian origin.
Istanbul-based LTEKNO ILERI TEKNOLOJI MÜHENDISLIK VE TICARET A.Ş. was recently involved in a special CHP project in Uzbekistan, supplying two 2.3MW gas engines.
A new CHP facility is powered by two gas engines and capable of generating 4.6 MW in electrical and thermal energy.
In many industrial installations such as production facilities, refineries and regional district heating plants, the operating costs are reduced by implementing a combined heat and power system (CHP) with clean pipeline natural gas as a fuel. Gas-powered gensets can simultaneously deliver electrical energy for electrical loads and heat energy for the heating of industrial plants. While the efficiency of separate grid power and natural gas boilers is often less than 50%, CHP projects like this one can offer an energy efficiency of up to 90%,

GAS GENSETS
ENERGY SUCCESS AT THE LARGEST LANDFILL POWERPLANT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
The prudent use of resources is an essential basis for our lives. Global population and economic growth are increasing the pressure on natural resources such as raw materials, land and biodiversity.
Therefore, the careful and efficient use of natural resources is becoming a key competence of sustainable societies. Waste management is a critical component. In Malaysia, the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill provides a long-term solution for solid waste management in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
The Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill is the largest in Malaysia and was developed by Berjaya EnviroParks Sdn Bhd (BTEP). Bukit Tagar Sanitary is designed as a Level 4 sanitary landfill based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standards. Level 4 is the highest achievable standard and ensures maximum protection of the environment.
This sanitary landfill receives almost 70% of the solid waste from the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill receives approximately 2,000 tons of waste per day and operates seven landfill cells.
SP Energy, the authorized MWM distributor for Malaysia, was instrumental in working with the developer to design the first 1.2 MW landfill to energy plant in 2011. SP Energy designed, installed and commissioned the landfill gas cleaning system, which consisted of a gas chiller dehumidifier, activated carbon filters and blowers in addition to the gas engines. The first engine has been running successfully ever since, with a total of over 75,000 hours.
Over the years, Berjaya EnviroParks has expanded its power generation fleet. As a result, the Bukit Tagar landfill now has six engines of 2 MW each (TCG 2020 V20) for a total capacity of 13 MW.
All of these engines are grid connected and the power is sold through the feed-in tariff mechanism. This makes the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill one of the largest landfill power plants in Southeast Asia.
MWM is represented in the Malaysian market by the authorised distributor SP Energy Sdn Bhd. Under the leadership of Mr. Syed H. Kebir, covering East and West Malaysia, he has established MWM as the leading brand for biogas power generation, cogeneration and natural gas power plants in Malaysia.
SP Energy Sdn Bhd is supported by Caterpillar Energy Solutions Pacific Pte. Ltd. (Singapore), the Asia Pacific regional headquarters of Caterpillar Energy Solutions GmbH.
The market success in Malaysia is founded on the excellence, the well-recognised technical expertise of SP Energy for project generation and the relentless marketing and business development efforts.
SP Energy has representatives focused on handling enquiries throughout East and West Malaysia. SP Energy has its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and a regional service center in Lahad Datu, Sabah (East Malaysia) to service the Sabah (East Malaysia) engine population.
SP Energy offers a complete lifecycle service, including Long Term Service Agreements (LTSA); this
includes after-sales services such as the sale of original spare parts and trained service personnel with appropriate competency levels to handle the entire maintenance cycle, diagnostics and troubleshooting of gensets in operation and remote monitoring system.
To date, SP Energy has supplied, installed and commissioned over 74 units of MWM engines of various sizes with an installed capacity of 96 MW.
There are two main thrusts in the strategy for the MWM business in Malaysia.
First, the short to medium term focus is on the growth of biogas power plants, strongly supported by government initiatives such as the preferential feed-in tariff.
MWM has products which are ideally suited to these market segments.
Second, MWM’s medium to long term focus is on the increased acceptance and viability of distributed cogeneration power plants.

The Morocco – UK Power Project will generate 11.5GW of zero-carbon electricity from the sun and wind with energy storage to deliver the equivalent of 3.6GW of firm, flexible and reliable energy for over 19 hours a day on average.
The new electricity generation and battery storage facilities, located in renewable energy-rich Morocco, will be connected exclusively to Great Britain via 4,000km HVDC sub-sea cables.
The project will provide affordable, clean power to cover the equivalent of 7 million British homes within a decade. Once complete, the project is expected to be capable of supplying 8% of Great Britain’s electricity needs.
Alongside the output from solar panels and wind turbines, an onsite 22.5GWh/5GW battery facility provides sufficient storage to reliably deliver a dedicated, near-constant source of flexible and predictable clean energy for the National Grid, designed to complement the renewable energy already generated across the UK. xlinks.co
SHOPPING MALL IN ERBIL, IRAQ, INVESTS IN SYSTEM WITH DSE8610 MKII CONTROLLERS
Family Mall Erbil is the biggest shopping centre in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The site’s emergency power was divided into separate power stations, which provided emergency power for different parts of the complex such as the supermarket, fans, motel and shopping areas.
A total of 16 diesel gensets were grouped in sets of up to 5 – the supermarket emergency power was supplied by five C32/1032 kva gensets running in parallel.
Producing reliable power from 830 to 1250 ekW at 60 Hz, the C32 diesel generator sets are designed to meet mission critical, continuous, standby and prime applications.
Each one has been designed to meet ISO 8528-5 transient response requirements and to accept 100% rated load in one step - the cooling system is designed to operate in standard ambient temperatures up to 50°C (122°F).
The generator sets and generator set packages were fully prototype tested and manufactured to accept 100% block load in one step and to meet NFPA 110 loading requirements, as well as conforming to ISO 8528-5 steady state and transient response requirements.
The four-stroke-cycle diesel engine in each genset combined consistent performance and excellent fuel economy with minimum weight.
In Iraq the DSE distributor had been asked to change their controllers and parallel them with DSE8610 MKII series, as they were not satisfied with the operation of the previous controllers. The success of the project led to further changes to the emergency power provision.
All 16 gensets installed at the Family Mall Erbin were collected into a single area making one emergency power station, consisting of 12 Perkins/Leroy–Somer 4008/1100 kva and 4 C32/1032 kva gensets. They were then divided into four groups of four gensets.
All four groups are now working in parallel with each other and the total produced output of 16MW is being transferred to the load when the mains power fails, which can be for more than twelve hours a day.
The output voltage of each group is being stepped up to 33KV via its relevant transformer.
The 16 x DSE8610 MKIIs are positioned remotely to the gensets in a control room and are supervised by a central PLC system.
The system has only two selector switches, allowing for easy operation either fully automatic or manual/on load or on load demand, utilising the built-in DSE PLC logic functionality within the control modules.
as hospitals and data centres.
The DSE2160 extends its host modules’ input and output capabilities for increased application flexibility.
This is achieved by providing an additional 8 inputs, consisting of 2 analogue inputs (both can be configured as digital) and 6 digital inputs (digital input A can be configured as a frequency input, pulse counter or RPM input).
The DSE2160 also provides 8 additional digital outputs. All 8 outputs can be individually configured as a digital input, positive switching DC output or a negative switch DC output.
ALL 16 GENSETS INSTALLED AT THE FAMILY MALL ERBIN WERE PUT IN A SINGLE AREA.”
The DSE8610 MKII is an intelligent mono display auto start load share control module packed with industry leading features to enhance multi-set control. The module can be synchronised with up to 32 generators within the same system.

ITALCOGENREFLECTING BIOMASS & FOSSIL FUEL USERS
Italcogen reflects all of Italy’s cogeneration technologie, those powered by fossil sources and by biomass. The sector represented by the association produces a turnover of 500 million euros, with an export/turnover share of 18%.
Facts about Italy’s grid system
According to Elettricità Futura around 65% of electricity in Italy is still produced from fossil fuels, mostly from gas (95% being imported). Renewables are still the cheapest energy source in the country.
Electricity generation in Italy in 2022 was as follows:
*Renewables 35%
*Gas 55%
*Coal & oil products 10%
In addition, 14% of national electricity consumption is covered by imported electricity.
Electricity demand is projected to reach 360 TWh in 2030 (net of increased consumption efficiency) driven mainly by economic growth, the spread of heat pumps for air conditioning, electric cars, and induction hobs.
[Source | Studio Accenture «REPowerEU per L’Italia: Scenari 2030 per il sistema elettrico].
A priority is to make Italy’s regions and landscape protection authorities responsible for reaching the new renewable target: delays at regional level are largely underestimated because they are measured by comparison with the renewable target of the NECP in force (drafted in 2018).
The Electricity Plan 2030 aims to connect 85 GW of new renewables to the grid in Italy. The Plan also targets 80 GWh of new large-scale storage capacity. to be based nationally.

SEALED RELAYS WITH A HIGH-CAPACITY SWITCHING MODEL
A G6QE family of board-mountable, sealed relays with a high-capacity switching model designed to minimize power losses has been released by OMRON,
Omron Electronic Components Europe’s new G6QE1A4 relay expands the voltage rating of the company’s G6QE series of board-mounted (PCB) power relays to 480 VAC. The higher voltage rating makes the models ideal for commercial heating, cooling, and refrigerant applications, where prior variants of the G6QE series were limited to just 250 VAC.
Along with the increased voltage rating, the G6QE model can handle up to 36 A of AC load current and has a low coil-holding voltage designed to minimize power losses. The sealed relay conforms with IEC/ EN 60079-15 environmental protection standards for explosion-proof usage.
The G6QE-1A4 is a simple four-pin, board-mountable (through-hole) electromechanical relay with a DC actuating coil and AC load switch. When the relay needs to be operated, a DC control current (up to 280 mA for the 5 V variant) passes through the coil, inducing a magnetic field that manipulates the switch and contacts. Omron’s PCB-mounted relays offer varying levels of protection from environmental conditions. omnron.co.uk
7TH GEN IBGT-BASED INTELLIGENT POWER MODULES
Best suited for applications like heat pumps, Onsemi has released a highly integrated family of devices which reduces package size and increases power density for designers.
The FS7 1200 V SPM31 product family from Onsemi is the company’s latest innovation in Intelligent Power Module (IPM) technology, particularly for three-phase inverter drive application. This family is built around the 7th Generation Field Stop IGBT (FS7 IGBT) technology, offering notable advancements in efficiency, power density, and thermal management. According to onsemi, a crucial advancement in this generation of products is their use of substrates, such as Direct Bonded Copper (DBC) and ceramics.
HIGH-SPEED FUSES DESIGNED TO RESPOND QUICKLY TO HIGH VOLTAGE FAULTS
The PSX series of high-speed fuses from Littelfuse and available through RUTRONIK - are designed to respond quickly to high-voltage faults, providing circuit protection for battery energy storage systems and other high-voltage applications.
The Littelfuse PSX series of high-speed fuses can quickly interrupt fault currents up to 250 kA (DC interrupting rating) at voltages as high as 1500 VDC.
Their quick response time, compact size, and high-power capability make these fuses ideal for circuit protection applications in large battery energy storage systems (BESS) and other high-voltage power conversion circuits.
The family of fuses supports nominal operating currents ranging from 80 A to 1400 A and is available in a spaceefficient NH XL housing (1XL, 3XL) that optimizes power density. The fuses comply with UL248-13 safety and IEC 60269-7 battery protection standards, making them suitable for hybrid photovoltaic energy storage inverters and other high-voltage DC conversion circuits.
A typical BESS must be protected from short circuit conditions at the module and rack levels. With battery operating voltages up to 1500 V, fault conditions can lead to circuit shorts capable of producing very high currents. These high currents can damage the BESS modules or racks, creating potential safety hazards for equipment and personnel.
At the rack level, the BPU (battery protection unit) found at the top of the rack provides protection. Littelfuse’s PSX series of fuses are well suited to rack protection due to their high DC-breaking capacity of 250 kA, 1500 V rating, and fast response time.
For an RMS current of 50,000 A, the 1,400 A-rated fuse will have a virtual melting (pre-arcing) time of just 3 ms. This is the time span between initiation of the overcurrent condition and when instant arcing begins within the fuse and generally represents the fuse’s response time to the fault condition. During normal operation, the PSX series fuses are designed to pass nominal load currents with minimal power losses to maintain system efficiency. The PSX3XLFL1400 (1400 A) has a watt loss of 361.9 W at 100% of rated current. Since most fuses typically operate between 60% and 80% of rated current, a watt loss correction factor curve can be used to de-rate losses based on actual fuse loading. In addition to BESS rack protection, the PSX series is useful for protecting the DC conversion and inverter circuits that interface between the BESS, grid, and renewable energy source.
The PSX series fuses are larger than board-mounted ones, given the power levels. The 3XL package used for the higher-rated fuses has a body size of roughly 5.1” x 2.9” x 2.9” and can be mounted flush, bolted, or DIN-mounted. When a fuse blows, the package provides a visual indication and a micro-switch indication that can relay fuse status to the rest of the system. www.rutronik.com
