Green tech is at a tipping point where it could take off explosively ahead of radical decarbonisation. Hopefully, it will could bring a revolution in how create energy. The world’s best solar power schemes are now considered the “cheapest source of electricity in history”, the International Energy Agency (IEA), which analyses energy markets, has said. But are the world powers really serious about cutting carbon levels? The European Union has already signed up to a €500 billion green stimulus plan which China says it will also follow. Japan and South Korea both announced a 2050 net zero pledge and newly-appointed President Biden has offered a similarly ambitious carbon cutting plans. Both Biden and the EU have warned they will introduce carbon tariffs to penalise countries which haven’t cut carbon emissions-producing equipment in their markets. In July 2020 European THE EUROPEAN UNION governments approved the most HAS ALREADY SIGNED ambitious climate change plan to date, agreeing to pour more than UP TO A €500 BILLION €500 billion (US$572 billion) into everything from electric cars to GREEN STIMULUS PLAN.” renewable energy. “Never before, has so much of an EU budget been allocated to combating climate change,” said German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze. “The commitments to climate action and environmental protection are important and necessary, but the distribution of funds must reflect that.” The plan is part of Europe’s bid to become the world’s first climateneutral continent by 2050, putting it ahead of other major emitters such as the US, China, and India in the global fight against unstoppable temperature rise. The proportion of the European package earmarked for climate projects dramatically illustrates this contrast. Only US$54 billion of the trillions of dollars pledged globally will be channelled into green policies, while US$697 billion has been allocated for carbon-intensive sectors such as air travel and fossil fuel extraction, according to a Bloomberg NEF report. As part of this decarbonisation approach it seems likely that new petrol and diesel cars will be banned from 2030 under UK Government green initiatives to accelerate the switch to electric cars. Environmentalist have welcomed the plan, which comes after research released by Greenpeace found that 32,000 more jobs in the UK would be created by a 2030 ban instead of one five years later, as initially proposed. Despite this, it will probably take more than a decade for there to be more electric than petrol or diesel cars on UK roads.

A WORLD RECORD POWER GENERATION EFFICIENCY FOR KAWASAKI HEAVY INDUSTRIES’ NEW KG-18-T GAS ENGINE THANKS TO TWO-STAGE-TURBOCHARGING Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ new KG-18-T gas engine, fitted with PBST’s two-stage-turbocharging ‘Ecocharge’ system, has achieved a world record power generation efficiency burning Japanese standard city gas. Designed for power generation applications, the Ecocharge solution consists of a PBST TCX23 and a PBST TCA66 turbocharger which have apparently jointly improved its power-generation efficiency by 1.5% compared to the previous generation of the engine, delivering a world-best 51.0% in its output class. KHI reports that the engine and turbochargers have passed a durability test and are now ready for serial production. The Ecocharge principle combines a low-pressure turbocharger – usually a TCT, TCA or TCR – with a high-pressure stage for which the newly developed TCX series was designed. Ecocharge is claimed to offer increased turbocharging efficiencies in comparison to single-stage turbochargers. This is mainly owing to the intercooler positioned between the low-pressure-stage and high-pressure-stage turbochargers that significantly reduces the energy required to compress the intake air to high pressure. The higher efficiencies have increased the air pressure in the engine during operation. Greater charging pressure via two-stage turbochargers improves NOx emission reduction. through the Miller cycle, while the improved scavenging efficiencies provided by the Ecocharge system make the engine more fuel efficient. The higher power-density generated by fitting the Ecocharge technology presents the opportunity to choose between significantly boosting an engine’s power output or reducing engine size, while maintaining engine performance.

OVER 30% ENERGY SAVINGS ACHIEVED FOR EXCHANGE PLAZA
HIGHVIEW POWER TO DEVELOP GIGA-SCALE CRYOGENIC ENERGY STORAGE
UK: Exchange Plaza is a prestigious landmark office building located on Lothian Road in the heart of Edinburgh’s financial district. Thanks to Danfoss it has managed to make over 30% in energy savings. This 100,000 sq ft modern six-storey building is home to large companies which include oil and gas explorer Cairn Energy, law firm Burness Paull, the All Bar One restaurant and bar group, and award-winning craft beer producer BrewDog. Recently, ECG, the company responsible for managing Exchange Plaza, decided to look for ways to reduce the energy used by 16 pumps in the building’s HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. Having approached Pump Action to carry out the pump assessment, Pump Action contacted Greenville, a Premium Danfoss Drives Partner. Steven Brown, Business Development Manager at
Highview Power, a leading long duration energy storage solutions company, has entered into a joint venture agreement with Energía Latina S.A.-Enlasa, the largest backup power generation provider in Chile, to co-develop giga-scale cryogenic energy storage projects in Chile and other Latin American markets. Javier Cavada, CEO and president of Highview Power said: “Together, our two companies can harness the growing deployment of renewables in Chile and across Latin America and bring renewable baseload power to the region, all without the geographic constraints associated with other energy storage technologies.” The joint venture, named Highview Enlasa, is expected to help to open Latin American energy markets to baseload renewable energy potential. Highview Power’s long duration energy storage system, paired with renewable energy sources, are said to be equivalent in performance to thermal and nuclear power. Chile has one of the highest solar irradiation levels in the world and the deployment of solar power together with the national decarbonisation strategy require long duration energy storage to provide the needed energy balance to achieve a sustainable grid.

WHISKY MANUFACTURER IS LOOKING TO AD PLANT TO GENERATE INDEPENDENT POWER SOURCE ONSITE Established in 1885, North British Distillery is one of the largest Scotch Grain Whisky producers in Scotland, using up to 150,000 tonnes of cereal per year, with a capacity to produce approximately 10 bottles of whisky per second. Almost the entire production of whisky spirit is sold to customers for blending purposes, with significant quantities included in brands such as J&B and The Famous Grouse. In a new energy initiative, North British Distillery is hoping to generate a significant amount of the site’s electricity consumption with a new anearobib digestion (AD) system. The AD unit uses byproducts from the distillation
process being converted into biogas, which will then be used to generate electricity using Ylem Energy’s CHP technology. The majority of energy will be used within the distillery’s manufacturing processes, displacing existing natural gas supplies to the steam boiler system. The remainder will be sold into the National Grid. Ylem Energy’s 500kWe CHP system will be capable of generating 4000MWh of electricity from post-distillation liquor and evaporator condensate. This dramatically reduces the distillery’s reliance on natural gas and electricity from the National Grid. The C02 displaced bu using the 500kWe biogas generator will reduce carbon emissions by 2,100 tonnes+ per annum.

CUMMINS TO SUPPLY 5MW HYDROGEN ELECTROLYZER
IN BRIEF HONDA IS CONTINUING ROLLOUT OF ITS DETECTION TECH Honda Power Equipment, a business unit of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., is continuing the rollout of its CO-Minder carbon monoxide detection technology across its full line of portable generators. The company is adding three models — the EG2800i Economy Series unit, along with the EB2800i and EB6500 Industrial Series models — to the lineup of CO-Minder equipped gen-sets it launched in early 2020. The Honda CO-Minder system is designed to continuously measure carbon-monoxide levels in the air near the generator and automatically shuts down the unit before detected CO reaches a dangerous level for users.
A new 5 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer designed to provide renewable hydrogen for the Douglas County Public Utility District (Douglas County PUD) in Washington, US, will be supplied by Cummins. Once completed, it will be the largest and first of its kind in use by a public utility in the United States, according to the company. Projected to be operational by late 2021, the new renewable hydrogen facility will allow the Douglas County PUD to manufacture commercial hydrogen using electrolysis to harvest hydrogen from water from Wells Dam on the Columbia River. The PEM electrolyzer system takes the excess renewable energy and through a chemical reaction splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen acts as an energy carrier and the oxygen is released into the air. The hydrogen can then be stored in a gas or liquid state to be used in a multitude of applications, including fuel cell electric mobility. The electrolyzer is powered by clean hydroelectricity, so the production of hydrogen does not generate any carbon emissions. “At Cummins, we believe that scaling hydrogen technologies will continue to grow low-carbon solutions,” comments Amy Davis, Cummins vice president and president of New Power, the company’s alternative power business. “It takes enterprises, governments and utilities working together, like what we have done with Douglas County PUD, to make alternative power a reality and promote a more sustainable world. Douglas County PUD is just one example of how Cummins is expanding the energy market and driving new power solutions for our customers.” Cummins said the electrolyzer technology provides a means to address one of the largest dilemmas in the renewable energy industry how to store the energy when it’s not in demand. Cummins’ PEM electrolyzers, like Douglas County PUD’s electrolyzer plant, enables utilities to store this excess energy.

WORLD HEROIN SUPPLY INCREASES DUE TO RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY - AND SOLAR PANELS ARE THE KEY Afghanistan: Helmand province is at the heart of by far the most productive opium-growing region on the planet and it’s here that solar power has been truly transformative. According to the UN body responsible for tracking and tackling illegal drug production, the UNODC, almost 80% of all Afghan opium now comes from the south-west of the country, including Helmand. It’s official - according to the UN body responsible for tracking and tackling illegal drug production, the UNODC, almost 80% of all Afghanistan opium comes from the south-west of the country, including Helmand. But in the last 4 years Afghan opium growers there have all switched to using solar panels, and have effectively increased the world supply of heroin. Buying diesel to power their groundwater pumps used to be the farmers’ biggest expense. For an upfront payment of US $5,000 they can buy an array of solar panels and an electric pump. Once it is installed, there are virtually no running costs. Many farms now get two harvests a year - some even get three. As a result, in 2019 opium production in the Helmand region reached a record 5,000 tonnes. If you look at the region from space a zoomed-in satellite image typically might show banks of innocent-looking solar panels in a farm in the Helmand river valley “It’s just how opium poppy is farmed now,” Richard Brittan, a satellite image analysts told Justin Rowlatt of the BBC. “They drill down 100m (325ft) or so to the ground water, put in an electric pump and wire it up to a few panels and bingo, the water starts flowing.” According to the latest 2020 CIA Report, currently online, worldwide opium production has doubled since the mid-1980s, resulting in greater heroin availability, rising purity, and lower prices. The UN Drug Control Program estimates that there are some 8 million heroin abusers worldwide. Although heroin use remains less prevalent than cannabis, it accounts for a greater percentage of drug-related health problems, deaths and criminal activity. An estimated 2 million heroin users are in the US alone, with some 600,000 to 800,000 considered hardcore addicts.
NETHERLANDS HYBRID ENERGY STORAGE PROJECT IS FULLY OPERATIONAL An innovative hybrid energy storage project for energy management provider S4 Ancillary Services in Almelo, The Netherlands, has been certified as fully operational. The two main contractors - Leclanché SA, one of the world’s leading energy storage companies, together with S4 Energy, had been working on the project for a number of years. The project is an extension of an earlier pilot system created by Leclanché and S4 Energy. The overall system, now in operation, is a combination of Leclanché lithium-ion battery storage technology coupled with S4 Energy‘s flywheel storage to provide primary control power for frequency stabilization to TenneT, the local transmission grid operator. The combination with the fast-responsive flywheels reduces the energy throughput and amount of cycles of the Li-ion batteries and ensures an improved usage profile and longer system lifetime. Leclanché’s scope of supply and services in this project was the turnkey delivery of the battery energy storage system (BESS), the battery inverters and the energy management system (EMS) for monitoring and control of the battery system. The 8.8 MW capacity battery system provides 7.12 MWh of stored renewable energy and is coupled with six of S4 Energy’s proprietary KINEXT flywheels.

GREATEST GLOBAL ENERGY SHOCK IN 70 YEARS INITIATED BY CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
RENEWABLE ENERGY IS THE ONLY THING RESIILENT ENOUGH TO RESIST THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 Renewable electricity is the single energy source to remain largely unaffected by the coronavirus pandemic. This is the opinion of the world’s energy watchdog, The International Energy Agency (IEA). The(IEA is an international intergovernmental organization established in 1974. Its stated mandate is to maintain the stability of the international oil supply, although its mission has expanded in recent years to emphasise the promotion of renewable energy sources. In a recent report, The International Energy Agency said the outbreak of Covid-19 would ultimately eliminate demand for fossil fuels by triggering a drop in energy demand which is seven times greater than the slump caused by the global financial crisis. In the last few years, the IEA has been criticised for failing to accu-
18
WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER
“THE STEADY RISE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY COMBINED WITH THE COLLAPSE IN DEMAND FOR FOSSIL FUELS MEANS CLEAN ELECTRICITY WILL PLAY ITS LARGEST EVER ROLE IN THE GLOBAL ENERGY SYSTEM THIS YEAR.” rately forecast the speed at which renewable energy sources have proliferated throughout the world. All that has changed now. Solar energy production, for example, has increased at a rate much greater than that projected by the IEA. In the event of a sudden disruption to supply, the IEA can help co-ordinate among its member nations, who could increase supply by releasing some of their oil reserves. Other measures that the IEA can take to help restore supply include advising on interventions such as fuel rationing, public relations, and reach out to encourage lighter fuel use, driving restrictions, and the important co-ordination of efforts to bring additional fuel production facilities online. The IEA has said, however, that it fears
serious drop in energy demand since World war II would trigger multi-decade lows for the world’s consumption of oil, gas and coal - while renewable energy continued to grow. Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, commented: “The plunge in demand for nearly all major fuels is staggering, especially for coal, oil and gas. Only renewables are holding up during the previously unheard of slump in electricity use.” In 2020 the use of use of renewable energy is expected to grow by 5%, to make up almost 30% of the world’s slowing demand for electricity. The growth of renewables despite a global crisis could spur fossil fuel companies towards their goals to generate more clean energy, according to Birol, but governments should also include clean energy at the heart of economic stimulus packages to ensure a green recovery. “It is still too early to determine the longer-term impacts,” explains Birol. “But the energy industry that emerges from this crisis will be significantly different from the one that came before.” The impact of the coronavirus has triggered a crisis for fossil fuel commodities, including the collapse of oil market prices, which turned negative for the first time in the US. * Global efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19 have led to severe restrictions on travel and the global economy. These, in turn, will cause the biggest drop in global oil demand in 25 years. * Demand for gas is expected to fall by 5%, after a decade of uninterrupted growth. It is the steepest drop since gas became widely used as an energy source in the second half of the previous century. * Coal demand is forecast to fall by 8% compared with 2019, its largest decline since the end of the second world war. The power sector is one of areas most affected due to the nationwide lockdown announced in many countries. Coalbased generation holds a higher than 40% share in the global electricity generation. With the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, the decrease in electricity demand has forced several coal plants to operate at lower capacity, reducing the overall generation mix. “It is still too early to determine the longer-term impacts,” concludes Birol. “But the energy industry which emerges from this crisis will be significantly different from the one that came before.”

NEW DISTRIBUTOR FOR GENSETS
M
id-America Engine, the US-based distributor of diesel and natural gas power generation systems and accessories, has announced it has signed a distribution agreement with Atlas Copco for its complete line of power generation and light tower products. Mid-America’s territories include Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Florida Panhandle, including parts of the Gulf Coast Region in the US. The new agreement gives Mid-America sales, service and distribution responsibility for prime power diesel generator sets from 20 kW to 1 MW, as well as Atlas Copco’s QAS mobile gensets, which incorporate Tier 4 Final diesel engines and offer a footprint designed to be as much as 20% more compact than the previous generation. In addition, as many as 32 of the QAS 625 units can be paralleled for specialised applications, providing up to 20 MVA of stable and reliable power, Mid-America said. The QAS generator range currently incorporates nine models covering power rating from 25 to 625 kVA. All QAS generators include the latest Tier 4 Final engine and have a footprint that is up to 20% smaller than the previous generation. The advanced starting mechanism ensures that stable power is achieved in less than six seconds. According to Atlas Copco, ‘the range is all about the user experience and maintaining the value of the asset’. QAS generators have features which make operating, transporting and maintenance as easy as possible. If you need prime power for long term projects on a remote site - or require a semi-permanent installation which can be upgraded or downgraded, Atlas Copco suggests a Modular Power Plant (or paralleling multiple Atlas Copco generators) as an the efficient solution. A company spokesman comments: “We have developed a unique Power Management System (PMS). The PMS system enables the optimisation of fuel consumption and expands the generator’s lifetime. “PMS manages the quantity of generators running in parallel with load demand, starting and stopping units in line with increases or decreases in load. In this way, the load on each generator remains at a level which optimizes fuel consumption. It also

HOW USING A CHP ENGINE HELPED MRS TEMPLE’S CHEESES
A
s part of a diversification venture for their 230 ha dairy farm, Dr Stephen Temple and his wife Catherine made the decision to launch a luxury cheese brand based in the UK. From Bingham Blue and Walshingham, to Mozzarella and Wighton, Mrs Temple’s Cheeses is now renowned as one of the UK’s finest artisan producers. With sales increasing every year, cheese production has quickly become a key source of revenue. However, with a large volume of whey generated, combined with cow slurry, fodder beet and maize silage from the farm’s wider operations, waste volumes and disposal costs have also continued to escalate. Dr Temple therefore decided to invest in an onsite anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, which would turn this waste into methane gas via the natural degradation of organic waste. Using a CHP engine, this gas could be turned into renewable energy and used to power the farm – driving down both energy and waste management costs. Getting it right from the outset was important, but the project didn’t run as smoothly as expected. The AD plant wasn’t operating effectively, which saw energy production and return on investment figures drop. After researching specialist CHP advisors, Dr Temple came across CooperÖstlund – one of the UK’s leading gas engine specification and maintenance experts. Its team was invited to reviewe the site and advised a more effective solution. By taking waste volumes, feedstock type and energy requirements into consideration, CooperÖstlund recommended removing the existing biogas engine and replacing it with a more efficient alternative.
“
An award-winning gas specialist, CooperÖstlund Ltd was established in 2006 by Stuart Cooper and Johan Östlund, to provide a dynamic and cost effective alternative for clients operating in the green energy sector. CooperÖstlund has seen consistent annual growth reflecting the everincreasing demand for its services. Biogas, or renewable natural gas is the name given to the mixture of methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) gases that is formed whenever organic materials decompose in the absence of air. This process is known as anaerobic digestion (AD) Biogas CHP utilises the biogas to produce electricity and heat. CooperOstlund works with some of the world’s leading engine manufacturers providing a completely impartial solution to respond to the exacting requirements of each project brief. Regardless of project scope, CooperOstlund says it can provide the
consultancy and advisory services to deliver the perfect project, providing CHP solutions from Dairy farming through to waste water treatment plants. With more than a decade’s experience in the planning, assessment, specification and installation of CHP equipment, CooperÖstlund works in close partnership with each of its clients to advise on the best solution. Undertaking a comprehensive site analysis programme, engineers firstly scrutinise the required energy outputs, feedstock regularity and onsite applications, before advising a precise engine size, type and manufacturer. Rather than a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution, this bespoke approach means that each site will operate at optimum efficiency – delivering the maximum possible value. https://cooperostlund.com

INDUSTRIAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS IN GENERATOR SETS: LATEST UPDATES AND PROTOCOLS IN THE 4.0 UNIVERSE
U
ntil a few years ago generator sets were considered autonomous systems with no need to be monitored. They were merely supposed to start up when the usual power supply failed - their designated purpose. But what about when they didn’t start up? With the rise of critical applications, along with the computerisation of all industrial areas, both productive as well as administrative, the landscape today could not be more different. The generator set industry has vastly changed and the applications are extremely varied. Nowadays, a permanent power supply is necessary in data centres and telecommunications, in the cooling systems of cogeneration or biomass plants, in anti-hurricane systems in wind farms and in hospitals. These and other applications require highly reliable generator sets. When a genset has any issue at all, this must be detected proactively, so reporting the problem in the most precise manner possible is also an essential factor. This is precisely here where industrial communication systems come into play. We have gone from gensets whose communication was based on wired signals, with a very limited number of signals at that, many of which merged information (mechanical and electrical failures, warnings, etc.), to gensets which must report on their status in detail. The most common protocols Of all the industrial communication protocols most used in the generator set industry, the following stand out: 1.Modbus (RTU or TCP): It’s the most common protocol, used to integrate a generator set in the facility’s supervision system. Amongst its advantages is the simplicity in which the protocol is implemented - which allows any system to adapt to it . On the other hand its main disadvantage is found in the signals it emits, as they are not identified by the protocol. This means the system must be programmed and configured according to the registry tables sent by the generator set manufacturer in order for the genset and supervision equipment to understand each other. Likewise, the supervision system must send queries to the generator set every now and again to receive its data. 2. SNMP (Simple Network Messaging Protocol): This protocol is widely employed for Data Centres as it was initially designed for the monitoring of computer systems. A couple of its most notable advantages over
26
WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER
Modbus are as follows: - The data it transmits already has identifying names. - It’s possible for the generator set to send a notification to the supervision system when an alarm or event is set off. 3. DNP3 (Distributed Network Protocol): Used more in America than in Europe for communication with industrial SCADA systems, especially in the electrical industry (substations). This protocol was designed in a robust manner and has an object model at its disposal which allows the definition of the type of data sent out. It also has up to three different levels which allows it to prioritize the carried out requests. 4. IEC61870-5-101/104: It’s a protocol used mostly in Europe for the monitoring of power systems (electrical substations). It’s a robust protocol which allows the consultation of data as well as the sending out of events or control of the equipment. This protocol’s systems are practically identical to those of the DNP3 protocol. 5. IEC61850: A collection of protocols for power systems towards which many systems with electrical control are migrating. This set of protocols is more robust than the previous ones,
and has a greater range of application. It includes: - SMV: Transmission of measurement, protection and control values. - GOOSE: Transmission of critical values in real time. - SNTP: Time synchronization. - MMS: Protocol for exchange of application data, device configuration data or monitoring data between equipment. A spokesman for Genesal Energy commented: “We’ve managed to integrate each of these protocols in our Genesal generator sets, including the customisation of the data tables. This is all according to our clients’ requirements and in such a way that the integration with their systems is done in the smoothest possible manner. “The obtained result is optimal: it allows for all kinds of genset monitoring and control tasks in real time, ensuring the generator set reports any detected issue in the least time possible and with the most available information in order to achieve maximum precision, reliability and effectiveness. Without a doubt these are three key factors found in high quality units.” . www.genesalenergy.com

SHUTDOWN ONLY FOR INSPECTIONS AND OIL CHANGE: TCG 3016 BIOGAS ENGINES ENSURE RELIABLE HEAT AND POWER SUPPLY
he German city of Langenau to the northeast of Ulm in the South of Germany is famous for its many springs. In this water reserve, biogas facilities are required to meet high standards. For example, they are not permitted to use liquid manure. In fact, the digestion of energy plants is the only way to produce biogas in this region. In the Alb-Danube district, many biogas facilities are run by local agricultural businesses under a participation model. For example, BG Biogas Service GmbH runs two plants, each of which has a satellite cogeneration power plant, in a radius of 15 km around Langenau in the form of a participation model for local farmers. The cogeneration power plants in Langenau, Seligweiler, and Öllingen had previously been equipped with MWM TCG 2016 gensets. After about 70,000 operating hours, the oldest cogeneration power plant in Langenau was to be re-fitted with a new genset. In the fall of 2018, the container was upsized, and the first new MWM TCG 3016 V16 genset was installed. “In view of the excellent experiences we had made with the TCG 2016, it was only natural that we opted for the successor model TCG 3016,” explains Hans Michael Keck, Managing Director of BG Biogas Service GmbH. The high efficiency of the engine, the reliability, and, last but not least, the high availability were key arguments for the investment in a new genset when the engine at the Seligweiler location also had to be replaced about a year later. Keck explains: “Since we did not experience any problems with the engine in the Langenau cogeneration power plant, our Advisory Board agreed to the new investment.”
He feels that the MWM TCG 3016 V16 engines are very economical compared to similar engines of other providers. “Thanks to the transition to the new engine generation, we earn about €90,000 to €100,000 more every year”, says Michael Keck. Meanwhile, the TCG 3016 V16 in Langenau has completed some 16,500 operating hours, and the one in Seligweiler has reached 8,760 hours. According to Keck, both engines run very smoothly and reliably, and the vibration is very low. In late October 2020, the engine in Öllingen was replaced as well; this will be the third new TCG 3016 engine to go live. Less Than 3%Downtime/Year The new TCG 3016 gensets were installed by VG Diesel- und Gasmotoren-Service GmbH. This company is also responsible for the regular maintenance of the three biogas cogeneration power plants. Managing Director Vinzenz Guggemos is convinced of the
reliability of the gensets and emphasizes: “Usually, biogas cogeneration power plants do not have any backup gensets. “Therefore, the operators depend on the hassle-free operation of the engines. The downtimes of the cogeneration power plants of BG Biogas Service amount to less than 3%, i.e. about 11 days a year. This already includes the maintenance work that is done after 2,000 operating hours.” There is a good reason why the biogas plants are based at two different locations and have not been consolidated to one large plant:. At the two locations in Langenau and Seligweiler, the facilities are located in close proximity to the areas where the energy plants are grown and are each connected to agricultural businesses. In this way, the energy resources do not have to travel a long distance to the substrate plants. For more information please visit mwm.net

LOAD BANKS
NOVEMBER 2020
CRITICAL POWER SERVICES - PROVIDING A RESISTIVE LOAD BANK PACKAGE FOR A PROJECT IN THE DOCKLANDS AREA OF LONDON
O
ptimum Power Services has provided critical power services across a variety of market sectors throughout 2020 and - says the company - has been in demand more this year than ever before. Although known for its generators, UPS and cable and distribution services, it was the company’s extensive fleet of load banks which proved most popular. From being able to provide 80kw load banks which can be roof-mounted in confined spaces to larger 2.5mva units in secure containers, OPS is able to provide solutions for all load bank rental requirements. The start of 2020 saw OPS providing a 2.2mw resistive load bank package with 60 metres of cable at 400v for a project in the Docklands area of London. With severely restricted site-access and weight issues, the OPS team was able to pick from their extensive range of load banks to provide a perfect solution for the site requirements. Additional planning was needed to take into account the heat dissipation and the safe installation of the cabling. This necessitated a temporary trench being dug and the cables supplied by OPS had to change from 8 per phase 240mm to 7 per phase 300mm to match the powerlock connections available. OPS also provided the necessary new 4000amp junction box next to the generator room. As Britain entered lockdown OPS continued to be called upon to supply its critical building support to clients across the UK and throughout Europe. Being called upon to support the NHS over the years, OPS was particularly proud to have been part of the team which helped to convert the Excel Centre in London into one of the Nightingale Hospitals.
“
Further afield, the OPS engineers spent several weeks supporting a longstanding global company in Holland with planned maintenance works. Requiring a comprehensive heat load test, OPS utilised its latest 200kw LT Heat load banks which are capable of being operated from a single handheld load controller and being linked together. Providing the functionality of applying 1kw heat load steps, OPS delivered the necessary control and flexibility to fully function test the cooling system in the Data Centre. In August OPS was again called upon to provide its expertise for the positioning of a load bank in a difficult situation. In this instance, the load bank needed to be located on a roof terrace and the OPS engineers worked in a team of three at ground level, easing the cable up to the generator, on the roof hitching the cable up and finally running the cable into the generator room. The company was ble to draw on its extensive fleet for 2x 80kw and 1x 230kw of OPS’ resistive load banks - the ideal solution for this project. Placing the 230kw load bank within the doorway and the 2x 80kw load banks on the terrace area, circumvented both the heat dissipation and space issues. During October 2020 OPS was able
able to supply its clients with the ideal load bank to meet the exacting requirements of each individual commission. Some recent projects where OPS has been asked to provide expertise and equipment include: - 2 x 400kw and a 2.5mva load bank for a London Data Centre - 1 x 230kw and a 990kw load bank for a London client - 2 x 600kw and a 2mw load bank for a client in Hampshire - 2 x 1000 kw load banks, back up onto roof tops in Manchester. - 1 x mw load bank in Mayfair and a 400kw load bank in a very restrictive space in the Barbican, London - A 2.5 load bank package for clients in Norway - and, finally, a 600kw resistive load bank package for an NHS hospital in Warwickshire. The considerable range of equipment which OPS has invested in reflects its ongoing dedication to providing clients ‘with the perfect solution to any critical power need’, reports the company. To help data centres meet legislative objectives OPS also offers emission testing within its load bank hire package. More information, visit: www.optimumpowerservices. com

USING MIXED REALITY TO IMPROVE POWER PLANT COOLING SYSTEMS
U
S-based Ecolab has successfully used mixed reality to improve the cooling systems of “one of the largest independent midstream energy infrastructure companies in the US”. With COVID-19 causing restricted access to facilities, Ecolab used mixed reality to safely install a PURATE™ chlorine dioxide generator at a leading midstream company’s facility. Mixed reality enabled Ecolab engineers to remotely “see” inside the plant and guide a single onsite field representative through installation, testing and implementation. By using PURATE, this midstream company safely reduced costs, improved efficiency and simplified logistics for natural gas processing operations while improving sustainability, reports Ecolab. With COVID-19 reducing in-person access to energy plants around the world, Ecolab is using new digital solutions to deliver its water, energy and sanitization solutions. Ecolab used mixed reality technology to guide the installation of PURATE chlorine-dioxide generators at multiple facilities for a US energy plant These installations mark Ecolab’s first use of mixed reality to install, test and deliver a chlorine-dioxide generator solution for cooling tower operations at an energy facility anywhere. Mixed reality combines elements of virtual reality and augmented reality to create a blend of the physical and digital world that users experience through mixed reality headsets. Ecolab says its installtion of three PURATE generators offer real benefits. They can generate ClO2 and can be more effective than bleach or bromide solutions in controlling the fouling and microbial problems which - in turn - can reduce the efficiency of heat exchangers in cooling towers (EPA Reg. No. 1706-242). “Due to the travel, social distancing and plant access restrictions in effect
32

for COVID-19, a typical installation process that involves several on-site engineers was not possible for this company,” said Steve Kramarczyk, a corporate account manager for the Global Heavy division of Ecolab. “Still, the company wanted to realize the cost and logistics savings PURATE offers, so we were able to use mixed reality to safely oversee its installation.” By wearing a mixed reality headset, a single Ecolab field representative was able to transmit onsite visuals and critical data to a team of Ecolab engineers working remotely. Similar to a guided space mission, the engineers, whose combined experience totalled more than 50 years, were then able to guide the representative through a variety of operations at the plant which included: * Inspection and planning * An installation process in the cooling towers that involved lifting the PURATE
generator into place with a crane. “Digital technologies like mixed reality will have a transformative effect in the energy sector,” Steve Kramarczyk said. “Not only will companies which embrace them be able to perform major equipment installations, they will be able to better assess risk, monitor their operations and improve their efficiency. He concludes: “Ecolab has spent decades building relationships with our customers and learning about the innerworkings of their operations. “It’s this intimate knowledge which enables us to leverage our digital solutions effectively for our customers.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND THE CONTINUITY CONUNDRUM
P
aul Brickman from Crestchic Loadbanks explores the vital role of back-up power in ensuring continuity in supply as the world transitions to greener forms of energy. This summer, writes Paul, California’s challenges with power continuity were thrust into the media, when a prolonged heatwave and high demand for air conditioning left the grid struggling to maintain a constant supply of electricity across the state. With a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045, the ensuing rolling blackouts have forced the state to confront difficult questions about how to maintain energy continuity while delivering on its commitment to an all-green electricity future. On August 14th, at the peak of the heatwave, the California Independent System Operator (ISO) declared a state-wide Stage 2 Emergency, announcing that excessive heat had driven up electricity use and put a strain on the grid. After a natural gas unit tripped offline, the ISO issued a Stage 3 Electrical Emergency, implementing rolling blackouts in order to achieve overall grid reliability - a strategy designed to reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled blackouts. As well as causing a strain on demand, the extreme heat and increased reliance on air conditioning put additional stress on generators. An article in Bloomberg Green stated that California grid operators cited the failure of a 500-megawatt generator, which tripped offline unexpectedly during peak demand hours Friday, as well as a 750-megawatt unit that was out of service and didn’t return until after the peak hit. If both had been in service, a spokesperson was quoted as saying, then the grid operators wouldn’t have had to call for outages. For Paul, the situation in California highlights the fact that renewables bring with them a certain level of risk. Paul explains, “For many years now, California, like many other states, cities and countries, has been committed to moving towards a greener future. It currently gets around 1/3 of its power from solar, wind and other renewable sources, with a push to increase this percentage hugely in the coming years. While the aim is commendable, the reality is that the transition could mean a fragile and less reliable electricity supply for years to come.” As experts in the manufacture and supply of load bank technology - which is used to test and maintain backup generators - the company has seen an uptick in
36
WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER
demand for backup generators, which are vital standby power sources for applications that use renewables. However, explains Paul, citing the recent generator failure which contributed to blackouts across the state of California, generators need to be 100% reliable, or they’re not worth having. “The real issue here is reliability” Paul explains. “When the sun sets, solar output plummets and the warm evenings mean demand remains high, there is a discrepancy between supply and demand. The fragility and fluctuating supply of renewables creates a dependence on reliable backup.” Balancing supply and demand for variable sources of power is a known issue. Wind farms, solar plants and renewable energy facilities all use generators as a reliable source of backup power - for when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine. Paul continues, “It’s widely established that having backup power is critical. Wherever there is standby power, there is also a need for a load. By testing and maintaining the system using a resistive reactive
load bank, users can get a clear picture of how well an entire system will withstand changes in load patterns while experiencing the level of power that would typically be encountered.” Yet the issue in California isn’t confined to their use of renewables. The investment in green power has inevitably resulted in an underinvestment in traditional power sources, leading to aging infrastructure. While the deadly combination of ageing wooden poles, high winds and dry vegetation is a risk that the state is only too aware of, ageing power infrastructure also brings with it a risk of increased downtime, making access to reliable backup generation and testing of equipment even more important. Paul concludes “The increase in renewable energy generation brings with it a risk of fluctuations, which has undoubtedly led to more sites wanting generators. However, simply having them on site isn’t enough. The only way to guarantee the reliability of backup gensets is to test them often. Test them properly. Test them with a load bank. Failing to do so is a sure route to unplanned downtime.” www.crestchicloadbanks.com

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT STUFF: GOV TO PUT LOCAL AREAS IN CHARGE WITH ZONING CONSULTATION The Association for Decentralised Energy welcomes the decision announced on Octpber 21st by the Department for Business: Energy and Industrial Strategy to consult on a framework for heat network zoning. This comes after the publication of the ADE’s recent report “Heat and Energy Efficiency Zoning: A framework for net zero for new and existing buildings”, which laid out a vision and policy proposals for a wider zoning framework. The announcement included the following: - BEIS will consult on heat network zoning starting in Spring 2021 - The consultation will explore how a zoning framework could encourage both new and existing developments to connect in designated heat network zones. The consultation will then inform further policy developments to roll out heat network zones across the country, and explore the role local authorities and stakeholders will play - Heat networks will play a key role in a net zero energy system, and will need to be rolled out at scale if we are to meet our 2050 climate targets (CCC). To make this happen, we need policy that makes low carbon heat an attractive, long-term investment. Introducing zoning for heat networks not only attracts investors, but will help ensure consumers get the most cost-effective low carbon heat for their area. Caroline Bragg, Head of Policy at the ADE, issued the following comment: “Zoning is a hallmark policy for the ADE and the announcement to consult on zoning for heat networks aligns really well with our vision of a local, efficient energy system that works for the consumer. “This framework, if implemented correctly, will go a step further towards streamlining policy for heat decarbonisation and acknowledging that different solutions will be best suited towards different areas. It will, when considered alongside broader policy, create a positive landscape for investment in the heat networks sector, resulting in the creation of green jobs and the bolstering of supply chains.”

WORLDWIDE INDEPENDENT POWER
The hallmark of the KDI 3404TCR SCR is its high torque density, which makes it possible to guarantee performance typical of engines with larger displacement. In the US-T4F version the maximum torque is 500 Nm, while in the EU-Stage V version it is 650 Nm. The big advantage of the KDI 3404TCR SCR is its ability to provide outstanding performance with much more compact dimensions compared to higher displacement engines. In addition, as for all the engines of the KDI family in Stage V version, the management of the exhaust gas after-treatment system is extremely effective and intelligent, as it is characterised by very long average regeneration intervals and by the ability to regenerate the DPF, mainly in passive mode and in any case without any impact on engine performance of the machine. The extreme effectiveness of the after-treatment systems of KDI engines is also due to the fundamental idea on which this platform was developed; i.e. engines designed to have high performance features with extremely efficient combustion, which makes it possible to fully comply with the limits of the strictest emissions regulations. The exhaust gas after-treatment system of the EU-Stage V versions is housed in a single compact and easy to install module, with flexibility guaranteed by the possibility to customise nthe layout according to the installation on the machine. The performance in the EU-Stage V version is even higher, to the point that the KDI 3404TCR SCR engine can reach 112 kW already at 1800 rpm, thus allowing it to work at low rpm with significant advantages in terms of noise and consumption.
