The recharging of lithium bastteries is believed to be the root cause of a International Space Station on 7th September, 2021. Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, said the incident took place in the Russian-built Zvezda module and occurred as the station’s batteries were being recharged. The International Space Station (ISS) Electric Power System (EPS) currently uses Nickel-Hydrogen (Ni-H2) batteries to store electrical energy. The Ni-H2 batteries are designed to operate at a 35 depth of discharge (DOD) maximum during normal operation in a Low Earth Orbit. Since the oldest of the 48 Ni-H2 battery Orbital Replacement Units (ORUs) has been cycling since September 2006, these batteries are now approaching their end of useful life. In 2010, the ISS Program began the development of Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries to replace the Ni-H2 batteries and concurrently funded a Li-ion cell life testing project. Each battery assembly has a LITHIUM BATTERIES nameplate capacity of 110 Ah RECHARGING TRIGGERED (396,000 C) (originally 81 Ah) and 4 kWh (14 MJ). This power is fed THE ALERT ON THE to the ISS via the BCDU and DCSU respectively. INTERNATIONAL SPACE The electrical system of the International Space Station is a STATION critical resource for the International Space Station (ISS) because it allows the crew to live
“
The ISS electrical system uses solar cells to directly convert sunlight to electricity. Large numbers of cells are assembled in arrays to produce high power levels. This method of harnessing solar power is called photovoltaics. A lithium battery consists of two electrodes separated by an electrolyte. Typically, the batteries transfer electrical charge from a lithium metal cathode through an electrolyte consisting of an organic solvent containing lithium salts

pressure, so if a metal fragment punctures a partition that keeps the components separate or the battery is punctured, the lithium reacts with water the battery or internal component is compromised. The investigation into the cause of this most recent ISS alarm is ongoing but WIP will continue to keep you up to date with any developments.

Europe’s largest battery storage project, the 100-megawatt system in Minety in Wiltshire, South West England, is now fully operational. Controlled and optimised by Shell-owned Limejump, the battery will help balance the UK’s electricity demand, providing electricity for up to 10,000 homes for a day before being recharged. Shell Energy Europe Limited signed a multiyear offtake agreement in early 2020 to trade all of the power from the battery, as part of Shell’s wider work to help accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources. The Minety project, consisting of two 50-megawatt batteries, was developed by Penso Power and funded by China Huaneng Group and CNIC Corporation. “Flexible storage and supply systems such as Minety have an essential role in balancing supply and demand – especially as renewable power sources become increasingly central to the UK’s energy needs,” David Wells, VP Shell Energy Europe, said. “We fully support the UK’s target of achieving a net-zero emissions society by 2050. Projects like this will enable that transition.” The Minety scheme is now the largest battery within National Grid ESO’s Dynamic grid balancing. Limejump is an energy-tech platform that connects and delivers renewable and stored energy to the UK’s electricity system and wholesale markets. As more renewable energy connects to the electricity system, supply becomes less predictable and batteries are needed to help National Grid balance supply and demand. Limejump manages more than 400 megawatts of responsive assets, including Minety’s 100-megawatt battery, that can be rapidly dispatched to support the grid when needed. Catherine Newman, CEO of Limejump said: “Delivering the Minety project during Covid has been an amazing team effort, and with our colleagues at Shell, we can now focus on optimising Minety’s performance and supporting National Grid ESO.” Shell aims to make power a significant business that could sit alongside its oil, gas and chemicals businesses. It is building an integrated power business that includes generating renewable electricity, buying and selling it, storing it and supplying it directly to customers.

CPS ENERGY, HYUNDAI, OCI SOLAR AGREE TO TEST STORAGE PROJECT WITH RECYCLED EV BATTERIES
COMPLETION OF SALE OF THE UK’S WEST BURTON B CCGT POWER PLANT TO EIG In April 2021 EDF announced the signing of a binding agreement to sell its 1332 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power station and 49MW battery at West Burton B in Nottinghamshire to EIG. As of this month, September, the sale process has completed, the company has confirmed. West Burton B CCGT was EDF’s only gas-fired power station in the UK. It began generating power in 2013 and consists of three combined cycle units with a combined output of 1332 MW - crerating enough electricity for approximately 1.5 million UK homes. Fuel for the turbines is provided by a 19KM gas pipeline supplying gas to the site. EDF is one of the UK’s largest investors in renewables, with 1GW of renewable generation in operation and over 4GW in construction, planning and development across a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage. The company is building its largest offshore wind farm in Britain – the 450 MW Neart na Gaoithe project in Scotland, which will be ready in 2023.
CPS, OCI Solar Power and Hyundai Motor Group have joined forces to build a utility-scale system by a 2022. Hyundai Motor Group will develop the energy storage system, while OCI Solar Power will procure the storage system components and CPS Energy will operate the Energy said: “Evaluating these innovative technologies is be needed to replace fossil fuels.”
MOSS LANDING ENERGY STORAGE FACILITY IS CLOSED OVER ISSUES WITH BATTERY MODULES OVERHEATING A potential overheating issue shut down the 400MW/1600MWh Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility in California, south of San Francisco, USA,earlier this month. The facility operator, Vistra Corp, said in a statement that an investigation is underway into an “overheating incident” at the Moss Landing facility, which did not result in a fire, but has taken the 300MW, four hour storage first phase of the project out of service. “Late Saturday evening, Sept. 4, the Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility experienced an overheating issue with a limited number of battery modules in its Phase I, 300-megawatt/1200-megawatt hour system,” the statement said. An in-built safety system had detected that the modules were operating at a temperature above operational standards and triggered a sprinkler system, bringing the overheating back under control and averting a fire, but the local fire department was called as a precaution in the record heatwave conditions of that weekend. Vistra says it is now working alongside teams from battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution, engineering firm Fluence, and “other external experts” to gather information and begin their investigation into the root cause of the incident.

allorca’s environmental technology park processes more than 730,000 t of waste a year. Apart from the material created by infrastructure, the additional waste caused by tourism also represents a challenge for the island with regard to the waste disposal and processing. Thus, the so-called “zero-waste” model is employed to handle the waste problem: in Mallorca’s environmental technology park, all waste from the Balearic island is either used as raw material or transformed into energy in recovery plants. The objective of the model is to upgrade all waste in such a way that it can be reused as material or for energy generation purposes. Any waste which cannot be utilized is to be eliminated in an eco-friendly manner. F ollowing a meticulous separation process, any waste that cannot be recycled is used to generate energy whenever this is possible. The environmental technology park’s recovery plant thus generates enough energy to cover the consumption of about 53,000 households. In a methanization plant, biogas is gained from the digestion of organic waste. This utilization process also yields methane gas, which is used as fuel for the production of electrical energy. The digestate, for example, the residual material which is left over after the digestion process, is transferred to the composting plants. The generated biogas serves as fuel for an MWM TBG 620 V12K gas engine with an output of 940 kW. Some of the power generated by the engine is fed into the power grid. In order to further expand this sustainable cycle and the plant of the environmental technology park, an additional MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engine with an output of 1.2 MW and an overall

rupel recently provided a genset which runs on biogas for a special livestock farm project in Spain. The move meets global trends in power generation and the company’s own strategy of growth which involves employing alternate energy source other than diesel diesel. Pedro Gonçalves, Grupel’s Sales and Marketing Director, commented commented: “The daily work of
world. in order to make them increasingly more versatile, agile and capable of serving many applications, in a wide variety of contexts and conditions. This process also involves alternating the generator sets’ energy sources.” Grupel’s new genset has been designed to provide support for a livestock farm in Dumbría (A Coruña, Spain), operating continuously and in parallel with the regular electrical grid. expected to grow to 1,000 by next year. The fuel which feeds the generating set, biogas, comes from a biodigester with a capacity of 1,500,000 litres, located on the livestock farm. The project consists of a 100kW cogeneration generator, with a BAUDOUIN engine (6M11G4N0/5 biogas model), GRUPEL alternator (274GB125), and DEIF controller (AGC 150). block load capabilities, f ull duty cycle capability, from prime to continuous power, and a low energy fuel The DEIF The AGC 150 Genset controller contains all the necessary functions for control and protection of a genset. The slim design makes the genset controller suitable for paralleling even small gensets thus the AGC 150 can be integrated in nearly all types of gensets. The AGC 150 provides up to three levels (customer, service, and master) of password-protected and role-
Over the years, Grupel has been solutions for various types of applications, particularly for the agricultural sector, Pedro says. The generators produced for this purpose are able to support the producers in all stages of their activity with power and heat. Being an area which is increasingly more automated and dependent on machinery, any kind of power failure, however short, can jeopardize the conditions of the facility and various processes ranging from feeding to the treatment of livestock, putting at risk the survival of animals. A reliable power source is considered to be of critical importance. The generators designed for continuous use are ideal for this purpose, where there is heavy machinery and highly automated processes. supply 24-hours-a-day, avoiding
failures and losses. However, constant operation is more demanding and naturally entails higher consumption and more expenses compared to standby operation (when there is a grid failure). So, a fuel solution such as biogas, which results from the transformation of organic waste to produce biofuel, is ideal. This type of fuel is, nowadays, widely used for the generation of thermal and electrical energy in various contexts. Besides ensuring a decrease in costs normally associated with other types of fuel, biogas also ensures greater sustainability at an environmental level. All this, combined with the integration of a cogeneration system, of the genset, since the use of heat reduces the energy losses of the installation, reports GRUPEL. www. grupel.eu
have only relevant parameters displayed. The controller is made of robust materials and is built to last. It has undergone several tests showing that it stands wear and tear in all types of harsh environments. Also, the controller is suitable for PV-Diesel hybrid DEIF. Since this is a cogeneration system and has been designed to reuse thermal energy, a heat exchanger for the exhaust gases and a plate heat exchanger for the engine cooling system have been installed in this generator. These exchangers will allow the heat (from the exhaust gases and the combustion of the engine) to be used to heat water, which can then be used for various biodigester. The generator also has a gas ramp with pressure control, installed prior to fuelling the engine. It is a high-performance genset, robust, soundproof, and application. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

lthough there has been a material change in power production, with greener solutions favoured above traditional power sources, the need for back-up power systems and the critical role of testing will never disappear, according to a new data centre industry guide from Crestchic Loadbanks. The guide explores the critical role of both backup power and load testing solutions in the resilience strategy of data centres - from server emulators in the testing and commissioning phases to multi-megawatt resistive/ reactive units used for more regular testing of back-up power systems. Drawing on many years in the sector, the guide also explores the changing energy mix and its impact on power resilience and reliability as demand itself Paul Brickman, Sales and Marketing Director at Crestchic Loadbanks, explains: “In the most critical area - the data halls, which are home to the servers, arranged in rows of cabinets or racks - there is a continuous need for power and cooling. This is no great surprise to any data centre operator, a robust set of systems to deal with power failures and to ensure cooling is always available. However, while most operators full appreciate the need for back-up power, the problems arise when tain their back-up power systems.” To help, the team at Crestchic created a White Paper which highlights the various areas of a data centre that in the face of an outage, as well as the types of technology that suit the job in hand. SMART ENERGY TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASED AT PARLIAMENTARY RECEPTION The Association for Decentralised Energy showcased how smart energy technology lies at the heart of a net zero system at a Parliamentary reception held this month, ahead of global discussions on climate change at COP 26 later this year. The gathering of businesses from across the heat network, energy efficiency, heat pump, smart energy and combined heat and power sectors was an opportunity to highlight to senior government ministers the critical role the decentralised sector is playing in breaking through the most important challenges that stand in the way of the UK reaching net zero. These challenges centre on how we generate, flex, store and manage our electricity and heat. The reception, hosted by the ADE’s President Lord Duncan of Springbank, was attended by senior politicians including shadow energy minister Alan Whitehead. Recognising the importance of smart energy technology in the transition, the Secretary of State, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy The Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP gave the headline address. In his speech he recognised the need for the energy sector to work with Government to find the solutions for a decarbonised system. The Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP said: “We are trying to change the world, change the way we do business, the way we fuel our economy, and the way we live. It’s a complete whole systems transformation, and I think that’s one of the most exciting aspects of it, but also one of the most daunting. “There’s no way that a government minister, with great civil servants, can navigate on its own towards this goal. The parliamentary sector and the private sector have to work together, and I think that the work that you do is a great example of how we can co-operate. “What the ADE does is really a prime example of what can be done.” The event was sponsored by energy data company and ADE member Stark. Stark empowers organisations to better manage energy through data and analytics.

AMPS MEMBER COMPANY HELPS LONDON’S GREAT ORMONDE STREET HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN - MAJOR CHP SYSTEM OVERHAUL COMPLETE
C
larke Energy’s service team recently completed the scheduled 60,000 hour overhaul of an INNIO Jenbacher engine installed at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), in Central London.. The Jenbacher Type4 engine, originally commissioned by Clarke Energy in 2015, was positioned on the roof the building at the famous children’s hospital. As GOSH is located in a busy part of central London, from the roof and return it to the Overhaul and Repair Centre before it could be restored to the site, reports AMPS. Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust runs Great Ormond Street Hospital. It is closely associated with University College London (UCL) and in partnership with the UCL Institute of Child Health. The hospital works with the UCL Institute of Child Health, and is the largest centre for research into childhood illness outside the United States and Canada, and is a major international training centre for doctors andnurses. It has the widest range of children’s specialists of any UK hospital, and is the largest centre for children’s heart or brain surgery, or for children with cancer, in the UK. Recent apy for immune diseases. In 2015 the hospital invested in a J420 gas engine to provide for its CHP needs. building after full servicing. A spokesman for Clarke Energy commented: “The J420 gas engine has now been rebuilt and delivered back to GOSH and is sitting proud back in place on the roof of the hospital ready for the next stage of its lifecycle. “Great credit goes to all the Clarke Energy service department involved in the planning, removal and safe
durability. The electricity generating peaking plant at Ashford Power, Kings North Industrial Estate in Kent is operating 14 containerised Jenbacher J420 engines. When not in operation, the engines of this fully-automated plant wait on standby, prepared to be called upon and ramped up in less than two minutes.
