Types of weaves

TYPES OF WEAVES Most of the woven fabrics manufactured are of a basic weave construction or variations thereof.

What defines a Satin and Sateen weave? These may be considered to be opposites of each other and characterised by their smooth lustrous surfaces due to the warp floats in satin and weft floats in sateen. A float is a long length of yarn, which passes over more than one weft or warp yarn respectively before being interlaced. Such a length yarn is said to float, as it lies on the surface of the fabric.

There are three basic weaves: What is a Plain, calico or tabby? This weave is recognisable by its chess or draughtboard like yarn interlacings. This weave is the simplest and quickest to set up on the loom and fastest to weave, requiring the least amount of yarn. This weave gives fabric an even surface for printing.

What is a Twill Weave? A basic weave in which the fabrics are constructed by interlacing warp and filling yarns in a progressive alternation which creates a diagonal effect on the face, or right side, of the fabric. In some twill weave fabrics, the diagonal effect may also be seen clearly on the back - side of the fabric. Twill weave is the most durable weave giving the most hardwearing fabrics.

How is a Jacquard design created? Woven fabrics manufactured by using the Jacquard attachment on the loom. This attachment provides versatility in designs and permits individual control of each of the warp yarns. Thus, fabrics of almost any type or complexity can be made. Brocade and damask are types of Jacquard woven fabrics. The shedding motion on the machine has no shafts, instead a harness consisting of as many cords as there are ends in the warp sheet, which connects each end individually to the machine situated high above the loom. This permits delineation of most complicated and most intricate designs to be woven.

Satin

Sateen

Cotton Sateen fabric is a durable cotton fabric with a satin weave construction. This is achieved by the warp thread passing over four weft threads before being interlaced again. Hence, improving the fabric handle and increasing fabric strength by 25%.

What is Percale? A closely woven plain weave fabric, using fine threads which can be used in all products pertaining to bed linen. The fabric is unique for its handle and durability. A percale fabric is resistant to pilling.

Dobby Weave Dobby weave is a loom which small all over designs, dots and stripes can be made in raised woven or self-colour effects by means of a special attachment. Each shaft controls a set of threads. Raising or lowering several shafts at the same time gives a huge variety of possible sheds through which the shuttle containing the weft thread can be thrown. With a dobby loom, all 254 possibilities are available at any time. This vastly increases the number of cloth designs available to the weaver. The advantage of a dobby loom becomes even more pronounced on looms with 12 and 16 shafts.
