Come on England!
y the time you read this the Rugby World Cup will be over. New Zealand will have won, although as I am writing this they still have yet to play South Africa in the semi final. Just a thought, by the way, but if South Africa beat New Zealand would the fact that Japan beat South Africa make Japan better than New Zealand? I think it would but then I am an English rugby fan….and not bitter at all! It is only now, three weeks after England were ignominiously dumped out of their own tournament in the group stages, that I can even contemplate discussing the most upsetting sporting occasion of my life.
nooooo’… ‘All Scotland have to do is hold out for another minute’…’Oh nooooo!’ There it was, gone. Not only the hopes of a nation but the hopes of a whole hemisphere. I’m only glad that I decided not to buy any tickets, thankfully the eye-watering prices put me off. I also came to an agreement with myself that I’d not be swayed by the marketing campaign and end up swathed in branded RWC15 gear. The one concession I did make on this front was buying my daughter an England rugby shirt. I must admit it cost a few quid, especially when you bear in mind she’ll have grown out of it by Christmas, but, once in a lifetime etc etc and she did look very cute…
One of the saddest sights of the recent past was in the week after the Australia game. I went into a supermarket and was greeted by a huge box of England rugby balls on sale. They were dirty, the box was tatty and worst of all, they were completely flat. I am English but will always support any of the home nations (including Ireland of course) in any sport so it goes without saying that I’m used to being disappointed. The Rugby World Cup 2015 promised something different though. It was in our own backyard and to have waited 24 years for it to return and then to be over after just three weeks was just dreadful. Then to watch as one by one the other home nations fell away as well. ‘Wales are going to win only 5 minutes to go’…’Oh no’…’Ireland will surely beat Argentina, the weakest of the Southern Hemisphere sides’…’Oh

well she would have if she’d have even tried it on. When I got home with it, on the morning of the Wales game, she flatly refused to have anything to do with it. Little did I know I have been harbouring my own version of Paul ‘the oracle’ octopus; she obviously knew it would all end in tears. Maybe by not wearing it she was hoping her old man could return it and get his money back. Thankfully her early bedtime meant she didn’t have to watch the horrors unfold, but by the end of the game I sure wish I’d joined her in having an early night. She still hasn’t worn it (is she trying to tell me
something?). We’ll keep her on half rations to make sure it still fits come the Six Nations in February and if she still refuses to don the rose then I’ll be sure not to put any money on England to win that one either. They were dirty, the box was tatty and worst of all, they were completely flat. If ever there was a metaphor for how England fans were feeling then this was it, deflated and at the bargain bin end of the rugby world. Oh well, if nothing else England fans are resilient…Bring on Japan 2019…Come on England!!!
