W

elcome to the first edition of the year. As I write the festive season is still in full swing, and as such the excesses of the season have yet to fully realise themselves. It is only a matter of time for that though, and sure enough, as January swings around, it’ll be time to purge the system and adopt a new healthier lifestyle for 2017. That’ll start with the help of some delicious vegetarian recipes (p16) and no doubt will require looking up the advice of experts like Matt Chappell at Evolved Health (p18) and Jo Grant at The Body Harmony Clinic (p20). But it’s not all about health and fitness this new year, there’s plenty more to look forward to besides. For one there’s the appearance of Omid Djalili at City Hall in Salisbury - read our interview on p10 - and the popular Mercers lecture series at Dauntsey’s School to take in too (p12). Head over to Howard’s House (p14) too for one of their hugely popular dining events. Beyond all that, we take a look at the offerings from Sydenhams (p22), get some property advice from the experts at Northwood and much more besides. Enjoy!

Salisbury business celebrates bicentenary Salisbury Fine Jewellers W. Carter & Son is set to celebrate 200 years in business in March 2017.

A

discrete notice published in the Salisbury and Winchester Journal dated 10 March 1817 heralds the beginnings of a business that will go on to trade for 200 years. On 10 March 2017, W. Carter & Son of 3 & 5 Minster Street in Salisbury will begin celebrations to mark the incredible success story of the oldest family business in Wiltshire still trading at the same location from when the business began back in 1817.

The owners and staff of W. Carter & Son Limited

As thoughts turned to celebration, one of the current directors, Sebastian Salt decided to commission a brief history of the business, and this has turned up some fascinating details of the building and the Carter and Holmes families. Since 1817, there has been a watch and clock maker, jewellers, silversmiths (and at one point in its history, even an opticians) to be found at 3 & 5 Minster Street. It is almost certain that every visitor to Salisbury, from the humblest to the greatest has passed its distinctive shop front. Delving into the history of the building has revealed that 3 & 5 Minster Street were united as one property in 1877. There is no exact date for the installation of the iconic shop front, which remains unchanged to this day, but it is likely to have been around 1897. A total of three William Carters have lived and worked at 3 & 5 Minster Street since 1817 and in

that time, the medieval ‘canals’ or open drainage channels have been cleared, the railway and electric light has come to Salisbury, two world wars have been fought and seven monarchs have reigned.

of Salisbury, as W. Carter & Son also have the honour of looking after the City of Salisbury silverware. The history of W. Carter & Son, which has been researched, written and designed by Elliott Tunnard, will be published in time for the celebrations in 2017. The business is also planning a celebration at the Guild Hall in Salisbury on Saturday 11 March.

Inside the building, the shop fittings and workshops of a fine jeweller remain largely unchanged and give an air of calm, luxury and continuity in an uncertain world. The business is part of the commercial and civic fabric • wcarterandson.co.uk

And although he’s swapped dingy pub rooms for the big theatres, it’s still live on stage doing stand-up where he’s at his best. Feed the birds this winter

W

inter is often a difficult time for wildlife with little or no natural food as the last of the autumn berries have gone, the ground may be frozen or waterlogged and insects are scarce. When the temperatures fall, birds use more energy fluffing up their feathers to stay warm and with the short daylight hours there is less time to search for food. However, we can lend them a helping hand by making food and fresh water available in our gardens.

Spoon the lentils into the pepper halves and top with the tomatoes and mozzarella. Drizzle with oil and season. Bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the peppers are soft. Scatter over the basil and serve with a prepacked salad and crusty bread.

Beetroot Falafel Serves 4

Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tsp ground cumin 250g pack cooked beetroot 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 125g fresh white breadcrumbs 1 free range egg, beaten 200g pot tzatziki, and mixed salad, to serve

Method Heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened. Stir

in the cumin and cook for a further minute. Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Pat the beetroot dry on kitchen paper and roughly chop. Place in a food processor with the onion mixture, chickpeas, breadcrumbs and egg. Whizz together to make a firm paste.

Cook’s tips Any remaining lentils can be added, warm or cold, to chopped tomatoes, peppers and avocado, then tossed in salad dressing for a quick lunch. Or serve them with grilled sausages or pan-fried duck breast.

Using damp hands, roll the mixture into 20 even-sized balls and place on a non-stick baking sheet. Brush lightly with oil and bake for 20–25 minutes until crisp and heated through. Serve warm with tzatziki and mixed salad. These will keep for 2 days in the fridge, and are just as good eaten cold as leftovers. They make a great packed lunch. THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

E

volved Health is a personal training facility that is pioneering, innovative, and focused on delivering results, whilst having fun. Evolved helps people get the best possible gym experience, and as we begin a new year, with so many of us looking for a way to feel healthier and look better, it’s well worth finding out a little more about what they do.

Evolved work with the individual in front of them, deliberately steering clear of a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Founder Matt Chappell says, “Evolved understand that each client they see is investing in themselves, and placing their trust in them to get results. It’s a responsibility we take seriously. One of our mottos is ‘trust the process’.”

“It is often said personal training is an expensive luxury, but Evolved turn that into a valuable essential.”

At this private fitness facility, all sessions are by appointment only. There is no queueing for kit and there are no time limits in force for the equipment. Their 1:1 or semiprivate (two to three people sharing a session) options mean you get personal attention and access to the superb gym at a time that suits you.

Using tried and tested programmes and approaches, they avoid fads and gimmicks. Incorporated into sessions are elements of strength, endurance, mobility, flexibility and cardio exercises.

It is often said personal training is an expensive luxury, but Evolved turn that into a valuable essential. Evolved Health is one of the most innovative fitness centres in the region

What’s more with their different training options it doesn’t cost as much as you think, with small group female training classes costing from only £10 per session. These fun sessions use HIIT, bodyweight exercises, weight training and punchbag work to achieve great results. Alternatively, their semi private personal training (from £20 per session) allows you to share a training session, and the cost, with spouse/friend, with programs designed specific to your goals. Penguins bring festive cheer

I

f there’s one thing that’ll cheer anyone up over Christmas, it’s a visit from something small and cuddly. If that small, cuddly thing happens to be a penguin, so the better. And when penguins Pringle and Charlie went to Avonbourne Care Centre at Old Sarum in December their impact on residents was clear to see. The penguins waddled around visiting care home residents and generally delivering festive cheer to all. The residents could stroke the penguins and enjoy all the therapeutic Pringle and his friend Charlie are therapy pengiuns

effects of playing with any other animal, but with the added ‘cute and cuddly’ factor of them being penguins. Pringle and Charlie aren’t just any penguins, mind you, they have been trained up to work as therapy animals, happily enjoying strokes and posing for photos to provide comfort. The care home residents were joined by a group of visiting children, who also got to experience the joy of spending time with penguins. Following the success of the penguins, more animal visits are scheduled for 2017, all

part of the wide range of activities and outings that take place at Avonbourne. Care Centre manager, Esther Thomas, says, “We believe it’s crucially important for all our residents to keep healthy and active, in mind and body. That’s why, as well as providing healthy, nutritious homecooked meals and encouraging our residents to exercise, our activities co-ordinator offers a diverse range of activities; it is these factors that ultimately lead to residents living healthier, more independent lives.” To make an appointment to visit and see Avonbourne for yourself, call 0800 988 8133 or email enquiries@osjct.co.uk. • osjct.co.uk

Selling your home in 2017? MARYAM CALVERT from Northwood Salisbury talks you through an array of things, some quite surprising, that are known to affect the value of your home... Regal sounding street names can bump up the price of your home

A FRIENDLY LOCAL DRINKING HOLE!

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Actually quite a lot, it’s not a massive shock to most of us that the name of your street affects the value of your home, after all, given the choice between Primrose Hill and Pike Street, one has significantly more appeal than the other. Research by Zoopla found Warrens are the priciest types of roads and rude names sell for less due to the embarrassment. Regal sounding street names, especially with one with ‘king’ in the name, can help to bump up prices.

LOVE THY (GOOD) NEIGHBOUR It would seem that even if you yourself are not terribly interested in an organic farm shop or a Michelin – starred restaurant, it pays to have neighbours that are. The more upmarket businesses that pop up around you the better it is for your house value. And it doesn’t matter how well maintained the local area is, or how pretty the local park is, disputes with neighbours, or an unkempt neighbouring property, will affect buyer offers. A successful local school, meanwhile, can increase house prices dramatically compared to lower performing schools.

It seems a good idea having a local within staggering distance, that said, a local which is noisy or maybe has bad reputation will potentially put buyers off and have a negative impact on your sale price. To find out how much your property really is worth – regardless of whether you have a Waitrose supermarket or award-winning butchers on your doorstop, or reside in Ridgemount House – get in touch with us and we will happily give you a free market valuation. Lettings and Landlords MARYAM CALVERT from Northwood Salisbury talks you through the importance of a detailed inventory when letting your property... “If you have an unfurnished property, then you don’t need an inventory.” It is a common misconception amongst many landlords that an inventory is only necessary on a fully furnished property. After all, there is no furniture right? Wrong! What about your kitchen cupboards and carpets, light fittings, doors and bathroom suites? The most expensive damage that can be done is to the property itself.

Unfurnished properties still need inventories to detail the condition of fixtures and fittings

A detailed inventory (also called a schedule of condition) not only lists items within the property and their condition, it also states the condition of fixtures such as carpets, ceilings, light fittings, curtains. Ideally an inventory should also include the colour and make/model of any appliances. A supporting set of colour photos provide incontrovertible proof as to the condition of the property, both at the beginning and the end of the tenancy. Any damage that has been caused by the tenant, such as holes in the wall, stains or damage to carpets, even lack of cleanliness will be much easier to prove with before photos. These should be signed by the tenant at the start of

The panel of judges for the 2017 Carbuyer Awards were particularly impressed with the latest Mitsubishi L200, saying it is ‘better than ever’ thanks to its combination of impressive off-road capabilities with car-like on-road dynamics, while also offering competitive pricing and high standard specification. Stuart Milne, Editor of Carbuyer commented: “The Mitsubishi L200 name has been with us for more than 30 years and the latest model is better than ever. It delivers on its promise of rugged ability with some neat detailing and an impressive amount of equipment, while it packs a strong 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that allows you to tow over three tonnes. T

hose of you who read this column regularly (and who pay close attention) will be aware of the fact that on 1 January 2016 I started something called Kx365. It entailed making a commitment to walk, run or cycle a certain distance every day for a year (hence the 365 bit, although as 2016 is a leap year I got to do 366 days!) By the end of 2016 - as I write a few days still remain - I’ll have covered pretty much bang on 4000km, at an average of around 11km per day. I am, I must admit, rather pleased with myself as I have had to do it when I have been ill, while on holiday, in the rain, the cold and the dark but I have always managed to make time for it. Even my four year old has occasionally chimed in with “Don’t forget your 5k Daddy”. So, having completed this challenge I have been looking forward to 2017 and trying to think about what I could do next. Something that will be as much of a challenge (but perhaps not as long term) as the Kx365 and perhaps something with somebody else rather than just on my own. So when a friend of mine mentioned he was going to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats in May 2017 I signed up immediately. We won’t be doing it fast, don’t worry! We’ll be taking a leisurely two weeks to complete the challenge, which averages out at around 75 miles a day. That doesn’t really sound like much, it’s just words on paper, but once you start to break it down it becomes

30

THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

Le Jog quite daunting, and, because we’re going from Lands End to John O’Groats and not the other way round it’s all uphill!

to keep anyone awake at night!! No. I shall remain hirsute and just remember to take lots of lovely, soothing cream.

Perhaps surprisingly, the actual cycling isn’t the big worry for

One of the other slight concerns, and one we can,t do anything

“We’ll be taking a leisurely two weeks to complete the challenge, which averages out at around 75 miles a day. That doesn’t really sound like much, it’s just words on paper, but once you start to break it down it becomes quite daunting” me though. I’m also not too worried about the logistics of it all, where we will stay, how we will get all our gear from one point to another, the weather, even the question of whether I’ll be fit enough physically and mentally to do it. We have that under control, in no small part because my friend’s wife is going to be helping us with almost all of it! No, the big choice I have to make, and I won’t lie it’s giving me sleepless nights, is whether or not to have the ‘back, sack and crack’, body hair removal procedure. As you can imagine, that amount of cycling every day for two weeks is going to play havoc with the undercarriage and body hair can exacerbate the situation enormously. I am fairly certain I have made my decision already and, to be honest, it was not too difficult. I think most men have, to show solidarity with their wives/ girlfriends, had a bit of a go at hair removal, but to have someone ferreting around in that area with hot wax, or even, as I have just been informed, bleach, is enough

about anyway, is the weather. I was discussing the challenge with a friend who has done a number of long-distance rides, and he said, quite matter-of-factly “Don’t forget in Scotland, in May there is still a fair chance of some snow”…. SNOW!!! I am not a huge fan of cycling in anything other than what can only be described as fair weather, so the very mention of snow made me think that perhaps I had bitten off more than I could chew. All joking aside it will be a very memorable two weeks and definitely an unforgettable experience. If it snows it snows and if it doesn’t well my prayers will have been answered.
