With summer here, and six weeks of school holidays stretching out in front of us we’ve some great ideas on things to do including Salisbury Museum’s Festival of Archaeology, the one day Gillingham & Shaftesbury Agricultural Show, to twilight opening at the stunning Roman Baths. As usual our comprehensive listings pages will ensure you have everything you need to know about the what’s and where’s if you are planning to attend and our summer activities guide is full of options too. One of the highlights of the calendar is sure to be Salisbury Cathedral’s ‘Sharing Memories’ weekend of nostalgia. Taking place from 3 to 6 August there’ll be children’s activities, a picnic, swing band and much more - see p8 for details.

Sharing Memories
Join in a weekend of nostalgia at Salisbury Cathedral this summer. anyone who wishes to contribute to the Last Seventy Years research project, a Memories Booth is being set up in the North Transept. Volunteers will be gathering memories between 10.00 and 12.00 in the morning and 13.00 and 15.00 in the afternoon. There are families activities in the West Cloister on Saturday 5 August, with special spire building and art-based workshops running from 10.00 to12.00 and 13.00 to 15.00 in which youngsters can make their own spire creation. Just turn up and take part.

alisbury Playhouse’s Stage 65 Youth Theatre will perform its latest production in the beautiful surroundings of the garden at Salisbury Museum, inspired by the Museum’s current exhibition British Art: Ancient Landscapes.

A Sublime Feeling runs from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 August

The production is particularly inspired by Wiltshire landscapes, including Stonehenge. The performance follows the course of the longest day of the year, with the rising and the setting sun portrayed on a specially constructed set. The young people in the production will be encouraged to respond to the exhibition through various roles: those of a scientist, an archaeologist, a punk hippy and a 21st century teenager.
‘A Sublime Feeling’ is a special theatre performance produced in association with Kazzum, a London-based arts organisation whose tagline is “playful theatre, unusual spaces”. Kazzum specialises in devising productions in non-traditional venues for young people using playful and inclusive methods.

Roll up, it’s show time!
The Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show returns on Wednesday 16 August, and this year organisers are trying to top last year’s event - the most successful in its history! The Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show is one of the largest one day agricultural shows in the south
producers will tempt you with delicious fresh food and drink. The Horticultural & Handicraft marquee always attracts big crowds so must be rated as a major highlight. There is a huge range of classes including vegetables, flowers, floral decoration, cookery, wine making, needlework, wood work and photography, with a specialist section for bee keepers and a whole section to encourage the younger exhibitors – all classes need to be entered in advance. In the art marquee, many local amateur artists compete and sell their works after judging.

ow do you follow the most successful show ever – by trying harder to stage an even better event! This year the feature event in the main ring will be the amazing Jason Smyth with the Adrenaline Tour Quadbike Stunt Show. This unique display is crammed full of tricks, jumps and spectacular stunts on a freestyle quad, with jumps of over 30ft in height. New to the main ring is the Dorset Polo Club from Lytchett Matravers,
One of the most popular areas of the show is the Turnpike Countryside Ring where there will be a full day of exciting displays including the fantastic birds of prey from Mere Down Falconry. If you are looking for a surprise you will want to see Terry Moule’s racing ferrets; you never know which end of the pipe they’ll appear from! For a laugh a minute the Dog & Duck display takes some beating, do the ducks really know how to fool the dog?

am writing this, sat on a garden chair, with my feet in a paddling pool. (note to self, do not drop tablet!) It is, without question, hot. Not a bit warm or sticky or humid or unseasonably balmy. The water in the paddling pool isn’t even very cold, it has been out all day and has warmed up enough so that it is a little like putting your feet in soup; garnished with bits of grass and insects obviously!!
