DOWNTON BREWERY

T

his is a hectic time of year for Downton Brewery. Apart from brewing, there’s the shop to run – they sell many of their beers in bottle; from New Forest Ale (quaffable at 4%ABV) to Endeavour (which demands respect at 10%ABV!). Draught beer in 4-pint carry-outs is very popular, especially with their LoyAlety card so your ninth carry-out is free! The Brewery will be at Winchester Christmas Market again this year, from 16 November until 3 December, selling cases (12 bottles), and presentation packs of 3 or 6 bottles – all of which make ideal Christmas presents. Back at HQ, their Brewery Bar is open every Friday till 9pm come rain or shine - outside heaters and gazebos help keep everyone dry and warm. There are at least five

different ales to choose from, all beautifully poured fresh from the cask. And by popular demand they’ve also started occasional foodie nights: so far they’ve enjoyed wood-fired pizzas, had a curry night, and a hot dog evening - with sausages flavoured with Downton Brewery beer of course!

As it’s party season, they have even more orders for minipins (18pt) and polypins (36pt) of their beers than usual. If you want to stock up with your favourite brews they’ll be open Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve for collections too. • downtonbrewery.com

FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT

Salisbury Cathedral will transform this advent with an illuminated art installation.

G

lowing tree forms, a gigantic light-filled globe and a wave of singing lights, Salisbury Cathedral and Close is going to be transformed this Advent and Christmas, with illuminated art installations on the Cathedral lawns and inside the Cathedral itself. The four artworks, collectively titled From Darkness to Light, were commissioned on behalf of Salisbury Cathedral by Jacquiline Creswell, Salisbury Cathedral’s Visual Arts adviser. Visitors approaching via the West Walk will encounter Light Wave by Squidsoup, an immersive walkthrough experience comprising of 500 light and audio spheres, suspended in a 20-metre wave formation, that softly glow and emit plainsong, creating a dreamlike experience.

“From the end of November until early February the exterior artworks will be illuminated nightly until 10.30pm” Coming from the High Street Gate, a neon sign suspended above the North Porch Gates will welcome visitors with its simple promise of hope taken from scripture, I Will Turn The Darkness Into Light. On the Cloister Garth, Lumen by David Ogle RBS, will sit among the grand Cedars that were planted to commemorate Queen Victoria’s ascension to the throne. This installation of 5 treelike structures will form a luminous canopy of interlocking neon branches

12

THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

The installation will include luminous interlocking tree-like structures

up to 3-metres high that will bath the stone arches with a vibrant glow.

Thursday 13 December for late night viewings of Lumen and The Light.

Inside the Cathedral The Light, a 4-metre illuminated globe hanging in the Spire Crossing, will evoke the spirit of Advent. Created by artist Richard McLester and his Poole-based team, a whirling and spinning galaxy of stars projected onto the globe will finally focus in on a single ‘Star of Bethlehem’, the symbol of Christ’s birth. The Light will be at the heart of an immersive concert, Songs of The Light, on Wednesday 5 December created and performed by Richard McLester with a choir of 150 local singers. The live music performance will be punctuated by films featuring moving testimonies from individuals sharing their journeys from emotional darkness to light, projected on seven huge screens across the Spire Crossing and at the West End of the nave. For further details go the website.

This year’s Advent Processions will take place at 7pm on Friday 30 November and Saturday 1 December and at 5pm on Sunday 2 December. The processions mark the start of the Christmas season for the Cathedral and the anticipation of Christ’s birth. Each service commences in total darkness until a single advent candle is lit. Over the course of an hour, two processions wend their way through the Cathedral lighting candles as they go, until the service reaches a climax with the building ablaze with the light of 1300 flickering candles.

From the end of November until early February the exterior artworks will be illuminated nightly until 10.30pm and the Cathedral will stay open until 8pm on Thursday 6 December and

In addition to the installations, there will be extra lights in the trees around the lawns and Choristers Green; a bonus for those taking the everpopular Twilight Tower Tours up onto the balconies high above the city and Cathedral lawns. Twilight Tower Tours are on sale now and run from 16 November until 22 December. You can book via the website. • salisburycathedral.org.uk

BUYING VS RENTING When you are setting up in a new home the basic choice you need to make is whether to buy or rent. MARYAM CALVERT at Northwood Salisbury looks at the pros and cons of both.

T

here can be nothing more exciting than moving out of the family home and setting up on your own. The basic choice that you need to make, however, is whether you are going to buy your first home or rent a property. With the growing price of houses in many areas of the UK, buying can be a challenging option because you need to get the initial finance together. This is especially true if you are first time buyer and just starting out. In the longer term, however, you have a strong investment that should prove cheaper than renting over time and accrue in value. For those who want the flexibility The hardest part about buying is getting of being able to up sticks and move together the money for the deposit when they want, renting is certainly the better option, though you don’t work out more expensive in the short term, over the years it should get the return on investment that prove much more cost effective comes with owning a property. than renting.

• You will need to get a mortgage to cover the cost of the house, minus your deposit. • You need to be confident that you can afford the monthly repayments for the mortgage. • You will most likely be asked for a deposit of between 10 and 15%

of the value of the property and mortgage companies may ask for a guarantor if you are a first time buyer. • If you are struggling to put together your deposit, there are various programmes designed to help, including the government’s help to buy scheme. The big pro of buying your own home is that you can later sell it and potentially profit from the

house & home | someone reliable who wants to rent their property. The big benefit, of course, is that you don’t have to find the large sums of money needed to purchase a property. While there can be certain overheads such as finding a deposit, this is far less than the deposit for purchasing a flat or house. You generally don’t have to worry about the maintenance of the property either as most of this is the landlords responsibility, so you shouldn’t expect sudden costs for repairs, but you will be expected to keep the property in a good state or risk forfeiting your deposit. Renting is a great option if you’re not ready to settle down

“Renting also makes sense if you are not yet ready to settle down and want the option of ending your tenancy and moving on whenever you desire.” sale or purchase a bigger home. The big disadvantage (if you view it as such) is being tied into a large financial agreement that you have to meet each month for the next 25 years or so. You are also responsible for maintaining the property and all that involves.

PROS & CONS OF RENTING More and more of us are renting rather than buying a property outright. The reason is down to the rising cost of the initial deposit and

ancillary costs. Renting also makes sense if you are not yet ready to settle down and want the option of ending your tenancy and moving on whenever you desire. The disadvantage for many people is that the future is less certain with renting than it is buying a home, though the security of both depend on a number of different factors. The good news is that many landlords offer long term tenancy agreements, especially when they’ve found

One issue that does worry some tenants is that the place they rent is not their own home. That means any changes or improvements have to go through the landlord, even if you’re in a long term tenancy. The key with choosing either buying or renting is to make sure that you can afford it in the first place before you start searching around for properties. ‘DOING A FREDDIE’

I

f you are lucky, you will have a few ‘I was there’ moments in your life. Obviously there are the proper big personal moments that come along, I’m not really talking about these – you don’t hear anyone boasting that they made it to their child’s birth anymore, it’s kinda expected for you to show up. It’s more about being there when something really significant is happening. I imagine millions now claim to have been near the grassy knoll in Dallas on that November morning when Kennedy was assassinated, or in the crowd when Dr Martin Luther King gave his ‘I have a dream’ speech’ I wonder how many say they were crowded into Wembley on that sunny July afternoon in 1966 when England won the football world

on the day Chris Ashton scored one of the most amazing tries in England’s history against Australia in an autumn international (they won the game 35-18 too, although I confess I had to look that up). It happened just after half-time and unfortunately (for her) my wife was still in the queue for the toilets when it happened. Never leave your seat at half-time at a big sporting occasion…that’s my advice!

And in the 2014/15 season I was at both of the record breaking victories that Bath Rugby had over Leicester Tigers (45-0 and 47-10) at The Recreation Ground. Good times. Phil Rockliffe Lastly, and this was incredible for entirely different reasons, I was also there on Saturday 13 October

“I was at Twickenham on the day Chris Ashton scored one of the most amazing tries in England’s history against Australia” cup. I’m fairly sure it was just my wife, me and the midwife at our children’s births but the nature of that experience meant you could never be sure how many turned up on the day!

2018 when Freddie Burns did one of the most stupid (not to mention embarrassing) things ever seen on a rugby pitch. Bath were playing Toulouse in a European Champions Cup game and trailing by a couple of points with five or so minutes Now, I can’t claim to have been left to play. Firstly, he missed a kick at any of the earth shattering from straight in front of the posts 25 moments, but I think I’ve been yards out, which we thought was pretty lucky in catching some about as bad as it could get….oh no big sporting moments at least. Mr Burns had something far worse I was at The Ashes in Cardiff in up his sleeve. He then seemingly 2009 when Jimmy Anderson and made amends by carving through Monty Panesar stopped Australia the Toulouse defence to score winning a test match with an under the posts, and win the game unlikely unbroken 69-ball last wicket for his team. Only he didn’t. Rather partnership. It got England a draw than dot the ball and celebrate he and they went on to win the series got rather ahead of himself, saluting 2-1. A year later I was at Twickenham the crowd and slowing down to

30

THESOUTHWILTSMAGAZINE

take in the crowd’s applause. He didn’t hear the Toulouse defender approach, and when Maxime Medard knocked the ball out of Burn’s clutches as he went to place it down all the Bath man could do was sink to the ground and hope it would swallow him up whole. Any Bath fans reading this will recall Sam Vesty doing a similar thing against Wasps a couple of years ago and big mistakes, in the sporting arena at least, immediately became ‘doing a Vesty’ from now on I’m fairly sure it has been renamed ‘doing a Freddie’!!
