A

s I write this I am in a state of shock. We’ve had a summer! And not just any summer, a recordbreaking one at that. Yes my croscosmias and helianthus are looking rather sad, and my lawn has pretty much had it I suspect, but we’ve enjoyed the kind of tropical conditions that any holiday destination would be proud of. Of course, they also have air conditioning but beggars can’t be choosers - my new favourite hobby is to browse the frozen foods aisle at my local supermarket very refreshing! But I digress, on to the August edition! Getting away is at the forefront of many people’s minds this month. If you haven’t yet booked your summer break see our last minute getaway guide for inspiration and tips (p41)! And if you are off on hols you’ll need to see our feature on travel essentials (p44). For us, this will be our first holiday abroad with our baby son - if you are in a similar boat our product guide to travelling with babies is a must (p46)! Away from holidays there is still plenty of school break to fill - why not treat your family to a delicious lunch or afternoon tea - our feature (p23) has some great places to go. As well as all that we’ve the latest outdoor kitchen from Stephen Graver, news from Bath Rugby and all your other favourites too. Enjoy!

Making music a team sport

R

esearch shows that children who learn an instrument experience significant cognitive, psychological and physical benefits. It helps wider learning, brings happiness and eases stress. Yet, anyone who has ever tried to learn an instrument knows that it’s hard work, and takes practice. Bath

Strings Academy was founded to help children and parents and is built on engaging group work, innovative teaching methods and great friendships. “Too often learning an instrument feels like training alone for a marathon, but our approach makes everyone feel part of a team” says Co-Founder Ruth O’Shea.

The Bath Strings Academy encourages young musicians to play and practise in groups

local news |

“It’s about time and space too,” adds Co-Founder Michelle Falcon. “Unlike the rushed weekly music lesson, Bath Strings Academy gives students the luxury of time and space: to explore ideas, to have fun, to be creative and try out techniques, from the earliest beginners to highly advanced players.” Players have been coached to competition success at local and national level, winning places in the National Children’s Orchestra, and National Festival of Music for Youth Finals. The next event is the Summer Academy, running over three days (29 – 31 August) at Monkton Combe Senior School. The site itself is a former textile mill; one of the few surviving mills in fact that once put Rode on the map as a key trading centre and market town on the Somerset/Wiltshire border. The Mill was part of a consortium that won a competition to make a dress for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, and invented a dye from which the colour Royal Blue was derived.

Caesar salad with roasted cauliflower Serves 4

turning halfway. Meanwhile, mix the breadcrumbs, 5 tbsp grated cheese, 1 crushed garlic clove, the lemon zest, parsley and 1 tbsp oil; season. Sprinkle over the cauliflower; roast for 10 minutes more. For the dressing, put the anchovies, Worcestershire sauce, egg yolk, 1 tbsp lemon juice and the remaining crushed garlic clove in a tall glass or jug. Add the remaining 75ml oil and 1 tbsp warm water; using a hand-held upright blender, whizz to an emulsified sauce. Stir in the remaining 5 tbsp grated cheese and plenty of ground black pepper.

Put the cucumber and onion in a bowl with the vinegar, honey and a pinch of salt. Toss together and set aside. Arrange the salad and potatoes on a plate, then flake over the trout. Lift the onion and cucumber from the pickling juice and scatter over the salad. Gently stir the yogurt into the pickling juice, then stir in most of the dill to make a dressing; spoon over the salad. Peel and halve the boiled eggs, then place on top of the salad and scatter over the remaining dill.

Toss the lettuce with ½ the dressing (keep the rest in an airtight container for up to 24 hours); arrange on a platter. Top with the cauliflower and extra cheese.

Ingredients 1 cauliflower 120ml olive oil 5 tbsp fresh white breadcrumbs 10 tbsp (about 150g) Parmigiano Reggiano, grated, plus extra shavings to garnish 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ lemon, zest, plus 1 tbsp juice 1 tbsp finely chopped flat leaf parsley 2 anchovy fillets, roughly chopped ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 free range egg yolk 1 romaine lettuce, roughly chopped

Method Put the potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with cold water, add a pinch of salt and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes; drain and set aside. GETTING A GREAT LAST MINUTE DEAL

1

All Inclusive can work out cheaper It will initially seem more expensive but if you are happy to stay at your hotel, having all your food and drinks included in the price can make it much cheaper.

2

Try less popular destinations If you’re not fussed about going to holiday hotspots, you have more chance of finding a budget-friendly deal. Instead of Spain opt for Bulgaria, or you can always choose lesser-known resorts that won’t attract as many tourists.

3

Be flexible with your dates Prices can drop significantly from one week to the next, so the more dates you have available to travel the better chance you have of securing a bargain getaway.

4

Book as late as you can Booking last minute can seem daunting but so long as you have the time booked off, by , booking close to your travel date you can

make huge savings on some fantastic holidays.

5

Avoid peak season If you can’t avoid travelling in peak times (if you have kids in school) the end of August often sees prices dip a little lower.

6

Fly from an alternative airport Prices can vary depending on the airport you fly from, so sometimes it’s worth considering other options. If you don’t mind travelling a little further, you could save yourself a considerable sum by choosing another airport.

7

Opt for package holidays With your hotel, flight, transfers and luggage all included in the price of your holiday, package deals can often work out cheaper when you compare them with do-it-yourself trips, and its far less stressful when booking last minute to know everything’s included. Pet Photography With the help of Lacock Photography’s FIONA TURNBULL you can take some fantastic pictures of your pets… PERSPECTIVE

A photo can show the great bond pets have with their humans!

F

or many of us across the globe, pets play an important role in our lives and are often thought of as one of the family. Photography is a great way to cherish our furry friends, and to capture moments that’ll give you that warm fuzzy feeling for years to come. Like family photographs, the aim of any pet portrait is to represent your pet’s individual character and the reasons why you love them (maybe don’t photograph them munching on an expensive pair of shoes!). While the pros make it look easy, if you’ve ever tried photographing your cat or dog, you’ll know it’s no walk in the park. But don’t worry! Follow these simple tips to pet photography, and you’ll be taking pawsome shots in no time.

CANDID SNAPS A successful pet photograph will explore a particular aspect of the animal’s personality. The best way to do this is to take a leaf out of David Attenborough’s book, and catch snapshots of your pet in their natural habitat! For example, take a picture

48

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

When photographing pets, most people either simply point their camera down for close ups or photograph distance shots from standing eye level. Photography is all about exploring new and hidden perspectives, and if you photograph your pet from these same ‘human angles’, you’re unlikely

of your cat having a nap in his favourite spot, your pup fraternizing with the locals down the pub or some energetic action shots on a dog walk. Getting a posed image of your pet can be an arduous task, and often produces generic and awkward looking images. It’s good to remember that the more photos you take of your pet, the more natural they will behave in front of the lens, so get snapping!

CAPTURE THE BOND The special bond between domesticated animals and humans is a big part of why we love them; a dog is a man’s best friend after all! So, don’t be afraid to add a human element to your pet pic, and like all the best portrait photography, the more natural the better. An easy way to represent the connection between people and pets is to include a hand in your image, stroking or patting the pet, and to produce a powerful and timeless image, try converting your photo into black and white!

“photograph your canine companion or feline friend from THEIR eye level, and see the world from their perspective” to get a shot that stands out from the crowd. So, get down on the floor and photograph your canine companion or feline friend from THEIR eye level, and see the world from their perspective. Warning: watch out for the slobber! If you’re feeling experimental, have a go at taking a side profile shot, coupled with an aesthetic backdrop; this setup can produce an image of bags of character and is sure to make you top dog on Instagram! Online course booking and gift certificates are available for all courses on the website. • lacockphotography.com Try to get a picture of your pet at their level to explore a different perspective

BUYING YOUR NEW HOME OFF-PLAN

People seeking a new home in Wiltshire can reap the benefits of buying off-plan, according to leading housebuilder David Wilson Homes.

T

he five-star housebuilder is creating luxury new homes at its Mill Brook development in Westbury, and is currently selling them off-plan - with three and four bedroom homes among early availability. “We know more and more buyers are choosing bricks and mortar as a sound financial investment,” said sales director Louise Ware. “There has never been a better time to buy off-plan. Even by the time they move in, those reserving early in the build process will find the value of their home may have increased - saving them money and ensuring their investment is working for them very early on.” Set in the market town of Westbury, Mill Brook is a new development of three and four-bedroom homes surrounded by the beautiful Salisbury plain. The town centre is within easy walking distance, as is the local primary school, making Mill Brook the perfect base for families. Westbury Station is also close by, with direct services to Bath in under 30 minutes. Among the homes available to buy off-plan is the popular Hadley house type. The detached, three-bedroom home is priced from £310,000 and features a comfortable lounge stylish open-plan kitchen with French doors that open onto the garden. Completing the ground floor there is an adjoining utility room. Two double bedrooms are upstairs, the master with an en suite, as well as a single bedroom and a family bathroom.

The spacious four-bedroom Chelworth home costs from £460,000

“The town centre is within easy walking distance, as is the local primary school, making Mill Brook the perfect base for families.” Also available to buy off-plan is the impressive four-bedroom Chelworth style home, from £460,000. The entrance hall of this spacious home leads to the airy lounge and a stylish kitchen with breakfast and family areas. This space opens directly out onto the rear garden, as does the adjoining dining room. Downstairs also has a study – perfect for those looking for a home office. Four double bedrooms provide plenty of room for family and guests, the master with a full en suite and fitted wardrobes. Louise said: “We understand that buying off-plan is to some extent a leap of faith, and many purchasers may find it hard to envisage what the home will be like once completed, but rest assured, as a five-star rated homebuilder we build to an extremely high standard and will keep you

informed of progress every step of the way. FIND YOUR BBQ HEAVEN

Take your barbecuing to the next level with a dedicated outdoor kitchen from STEPHEN GRAVER.

e Brits love the outdoors but the only time we cook outside, notwithstanding this year’s heatwave, is that one day in the height of summer on a cheap and cheerful barbecue. It’s not the best but it lets the modern man feel primal, ‘man cooking meat with fire’. There are lots of amazing and beautiful barbecues that will have the family running back for more burgers and bangers, but there’s a lot more to a good barbie than just the coals... What if you have the space to design and create an outdoor kitchen? At Stephen Graver, they love to innovate and design products that transform living spaces and bring new life into your home. A new project for 2018 has seen the craftsmen at Stephen Graver embrace the great outdoors to create a stylish and practical outdoor kitchen designed for all weathers and to be used all year round. As well as looking great, it is designed with space saving in mind and is set up so well that you’ll have the confidence to cook all year round and not just on bank holidays.

GARDENING IN A DROUGHT

Without any decent periods of rain to speak of in months, all our gardens are looking parched. Here are some tips to help yours get through this dry spell... encourage plant growth; the more a plant grows, the more moisture it needs. If fertilizer salts build up in your soil because they’re not naturally leaching out with rain or irrigation, they can build up and burn plant roots, causing further damage.

KEEP ON TOP OF WEEDS

It might not be fun at the best of times, but getting weeds out of the garden is especially important during drought; the weeds steal valuable moisture from the soil and away from your more treasured plants. Beth Chatto’s famous gravel garden

WATER YOUR GARDEN

It’s the most obvious strategy, of course, but to stay healthy, most garden plants like about an inch of moisture per week. In most cases, it’s better to apply the water weekly. It’s a bit of a waste to give your plants less water more frequently: doing so discourages the roots from growing as deeply into the soil (where it stays moister longer) as they can, and it’s also inefficient as more water is lost to evaporation. If your pots have dried out, it might be worth popping them into a tray of water so they can rehyrdate from the bottom - otherwise water can easily just splash out.

APPLY MULCH

A 2- to 3-inch-deep layer of mulch over the soil can do wonders: It keeps the soil cooler and shields the ground from direct sun. The

60

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

benefit is that moisture stays in the soil longer, where it’s more available to your garden plants. Run a soaker hose underneath your mulch to maximize water savings: Water will be delivered directly to the ground (reducing evaporation) and slowly (reducing water loss to runoff ). It will also keep plant foliage dry, which helps prevent many common fungal diseases such as black spot on roses.

STOP FERTILIZING

If you apply fertilizers (organic or synthetic), it’s helpful to stop at the onset of a drought. Fertilizers

“If you are finding your garden is drying out more frequently it might be worth looking at developing a more drought tolerant garden.”

DEADHEAD YOUR FLOWERS

Removing spent blooms before they have a chance to set seed saves energy for your plants: They don’t need to put extra energy (which they need water for) into producing seeds.

PLAN FOR THE FUTURE... If you are finding your garden is drying out more frequently, and if you naturally have dry, free draining soil it might be worth looking at developing a more drought tolerant garden. Succulents make great container plants and gravel gardens (Beth Chatto’s being a famous example) are a great option too, with the added bonus of being low maintenance. It also lends itself to Mediterranean-style planting so things like lavender, euphorbias, Cistus, Santolina and Phlomis are ideal and provide plenty of nectar and pollen for visiting insects.

DIVORCE: THE PITFALL OF OVERLOOKING FINANCIAL MATTERS MATTHEW ROBERTS, a solicitor at Wansbroughs Solicitors in Melksham, discusses financial matters when settling a divorce.

D

ivorce is often the focus of separating couples following marital breakdown. It is a far from perfect process which takes many months to conclude. It is therefore understandable that many couples are eager to move on with their lives following the award of Decree Absolute, the final stage of the divorce process which will finalise their legal separation. This has however led to a significant number of divorcing couples never addressing the potential financial claims that follow divorce. It is unfortunately not widely appreciated that divorce itself does not dismiss these financial claims and unless addressed following separation, the potential for you or your former spouse to pursue such claims can remain indefinitely. The rise of DIY divorces will inevitably lead to a greater number of couples separating without ever having the luxury of legal advice. Separating couples may not appreciate that there is no time limit on either spouse pursuing a financial settlement following divorce. If, for example, you or your former spouse were to become wealthy 10 years after your divorce, there would be nothing to prevent a future claim for financial provision. In fact, a number of examples of exactly this occurring have made the headlines over recent years:

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

• The case of Wyatt v Vince [2016] EWHC 1368 (Fam) involved a 3 year marriage and a financial claim pursued by the wife some 22 years after divorce. The basis for this delay appeared to relate to the fact that her husband took 13 years to build his wealth after the relationship breakdown. Ultimately this led to a lump sum order of £300,000 payable to the wife in full and final settlement of her claim, together with costs orders totalling £325,000. • Another recent example involved a spouse being ordered to make a £2 million lump sum payment to his former partner as a result of a Euro Millions win some 10 years after separation.

I would therefore always recommend that clients obtain closure and seek to finalise financial matters alongside their legal separation. This will mean agreeing and formalising financial arrangements within a Consent Order which, once approved by the Court, will become a legally binding agreement between the parties. If you would like further information on all financial matters following separation, the Family Team at Wansbroughs offer a free 30 minute initial consultation to all new enquiries. Call 01225 896100 or 01380 733300 or email family@wansbroughs.com. • wansbroughs.com

“It is also important to recognise that an informal financial arrangement reached between spouses following separation will not be binding to The Court.” It is also important to recognise that an informal financial arrangement reached between spouses following separation will not be binding to The Court. Unless this agreement is formalised and approved as a legal Consent Order; the threat of your former spouse seeking to unpick this agreement at a later date remains.

GIRVAN DEMPSEY

B

Bath Rugby’s biggest signing of the season could prove to be the new addition to the coaching team.

ath Rugby added a significant boost to its coaching structure back in May with the appointment of Girvan Dempsey as their new Attack Coach. He has made the move from Leinster ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Girvan Dempsey arrives at Bath with a great reputation as an attack coach

The former Irish international played a key role in Leo Cullen’s coaching team at Leinster. During his tenure the 42-year-old has worked alongside the likes of Stuart Lancaster, Joe Schmidt and Michael Cheika. In his last role, Dempsey was influential in driving the formidable attack, which saw Leinster crowned European Champions with a victory over Racing 92 at the end of last season. Under his stewardship, Leinster earned a fantastic reputation for their inventiveness in attack, and their ability to score tries from first phase. Dempsey also brings a tremendous amount of experience to Bath from his playing days; primarily a fullback he was capped 82 times by Ireland and played in three Triple Crown winning teams. He also enjoyed both Heineken Cup and Celtic League success as a player with Leinster. Girvan’s appointment is part of Bath Rugby’s long-term plan for developing the right support structures to deliver successful and consistent performances in both domestic and European rugby. Having started working with the squad in pre-season, Dempsey was, according to lock Charlie Ewels, keen to instil a back to basics approach. He said: “Already he’s laid out what he

In his last role, Dempsey was influential in driving the formidable attack, which saw Leinster crowned European Champions” wants in terms of going back to the basics and how we want to play the game. It’s really exciting and now it’s a case of knuckling down and getting on with it; making sure that come round one of the Premiership we’re in the best place we can be.” Girvan is one of a multitude of new faces to be at the club this season with signings Jamie Roberts, Joe Cokanasiga, Will Chudley, Jackson Willison and Ruaridh McConnochie among those looking to make an impression in the weeks ahead.

Bath’s 2018/19 Gallagher Premiership campaign (nb new sponsors!) begins with a tough trip to local rivals Bristol Bears. The newly promoted team host the first game of the new season on Friday 31 August, ko 7.45pm. This tricky opening game should show how successfully Dempsey’s messages have been received, and with Bath not having lost any players to international duty over the summer, the squad should be ready and raring to go. • bathrugby.com

ARE YOU READY FOR YOUR CLOSE UP?

T

o some people having a photo taken is a pleasure; they turn up at the appointed time and place or point their phones at themselves for a selfie and the resulting pic is beautiful. Hair in place, no silly faces and, as the saying goes, they look like they have ‘just stepped out of a salon’. Me….not so much! When I decide to be in a photo (which by the way, is never, it’s always decided for me) I know there

checked on at regular intervals (I was also banned from eating or drinking anything.)

dreadfully uncomfortable having to pose in a way I wouldn’t usually, wear clothes that I wouldn’t usually and generally be someone that is not me We arrived at Sydney Gardens and and you can almost always see it in met up with the photographer the finished shots. who really made us feel at ease… The photographer has sent back the Well most of us anyway!! We were results of our hour or so in the park posing against trees and bridges, and to be honest they are about sitting on the grass standing in what I thought they would be. Loads sun-dappled light, you know the sort of lovely pics of the wife and kids of thing. I could feel the eyes of the getting two young children to look passers-by on me - they evidently the same way at the same time and smile is no mean feat I can tell you “We piled into the car and set off on a sunny and some quite questionable ones of Saturday morning hoping against hope that both me. I still want to know the black lagoon. If my wife and I something along the lines of, “I can who the fat bloke with the four chins have photos taken together I am understand the wife and kids being is though! always left wondering who the fat photographed but what on earth bloke with four chins is with her and is the fat guy with four chins doing Phil Rockliffe why didn’t they take any pictures of there?” I’m sure I heard someone say me… Oh hold on!!! “photoshop” out of the corner of their mouth at one point but that may Imagine my delight then when have been my wife!! I was informed that considering there are no photos of us together The kids were brilliant considering since we got married in 2011, and their ages, a 5 year old and a 9 the kids will apparently want to see month old, doing what they were pics of us when they grow up, we told and generally being cheeky and were taking a trip to Bath for a family photographing really well. Even I got photo session. We piled into the into it after a while and I believe that car and set off on a sunny Saturday in some of the pictures I only had morning hoping against hope that two chins. I have a really weird way both children would still be in a of smiling when having my photo photographable state by the time taken. I think I am smiling totally we got to Bath.
