NATIONAL RUGBY CAMPS AT TROWBRIDGE RFC Zeus Events are delighted to announce the launch of National Rugby Camps at Trowbridge Rugby Club this July. National Rugby Camps are designed for boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 16 and cater for all abilities. Sessions will be led by high-quality coaches and professional players. The National Rugby Camps are an opportunity for players to develop their skills using five pillars of play: Accuracy, Creativity, Continuity, Vision and Enjoyment. All attendees will receive a free gift and there are certificates on the final day of camp for players that have shown great potential and upheld the core values of rugby. National Rugby Camps are taking place at Trowbridge RFC between Monday 29 July and Wednesday 31 July. Adam Clayton, Co-Founder of Zeus Events, rights holders to the National Rugby Programme, said: ‘We’re delighted to be launching the National Rugby Camps across

MITCHEL BROWN AIMING FOR TOKYO Mitchel Brown, a student at Fairfield Farm College, is celebrating a variety of sporting triumphs over the past few months, including ranking highly in a range of competitive athletic events. Mitchel is a keen runner, with the 100m and 200m as his main events. He is currently ranked 7th in UK for the 200m. His talent was spotted by Rachel Bown, his sports teacher, when he joined the college three years ago.
The Soapbox Derby returns on 18 August
This August the Soapbox Derby is returning to the streets of Trowbridge! The event is supported by Tarmac and is part of the Trowbridge Carnival line up of events. It takes place on Sunday 18 August from 10am (registration from 9am), entry is only £3 per driver. So, get busy making your own soap box and head over to Castle Street to join in the fun - there are even prizes to be won!

PINE RIDGE DOG SANCTUARY AUGUST EVENTS
Every year Pine Ridge Dog Sanctuary hosts two fundraising events in August. The first is their annual Open Day, which this year takes place on

Saturday 3 August from 12noon to 4pm. Visitors will be free to visit the dogs and speak with manageress, Claire, about any dog they may wish to give a home to. The seecond event to pop in your diaries is their Fun Dog Show, which takes place on Sunday, 18 August (entries from 12noon judging from 1.30pm). A barbecue and food bar will be available throughout the afternoons and there will be other stalls and a raffle. There is parking on site too.
Mitchel does not let his Cerebral Palsy and learning difficulties get in the way of his ambitions. He is unfazed by competing against able bodied athletes in mainstream competitions, as well as racing against those with a similar disability as a member of Cerebral Palsy Sport. He currently trains with Deborah Bray to improve his times to meet the qualification standard for next years Paralympics Games in Tokyo. The team at Fairfield Farm College, Lavington Athletics Club and his family are all behind him, giving him the support he needs to break his personal best. Fitting all this sport in around his studies is sometimes difficult, but he’s used to running around! Young Paralympic hopeful Mitchel Brown has his sights set on Tokyo

CIVIL WAR RE-ENACTMENT
O
n Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August The Marquess of Winchester’s Regiment of the English Civil War Society will re-enact the two-day Royalist occupation of Great Chalfield Manor house in 1644 – 375 years ago. The regiment and accompanying civilians will march in at the start of each day and guards will be posted to keep watch. The soldiers will drill and fire muskets and cannon during the day.
Parliamentarian patrol will be driven off in a sharp skirmish. Any prisoners taken will be tried and then marched off under escort.

T
he Elizabethan Evening at Manor Farm in Corsley, near Warminster is always one of the highlights of the summer season. The professional open-air touring theatre - with optional pre-booked supper waited by serfs and wenches - and music in theme with the play performed, all make for an exceptional evening. Picnics are welcome at this family event and all proceeds are donated to local charitable causes. This year it takes place on Saturday 3 August, and the play is an adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. This year you are invited to take a step back in time with Chapterhouse Theatre Company to meet Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Austen’s notorious heroine. When

hat a change from last year ‘s weather which saw all our lawns scorched brown. We have had substantial rainfall during June. This has been very good for our vegetable crops and our livestock and arable farmers. One of our most important crops, potatoes, benefit most if they get a season long supply of water, but most importantly during the 6 - 10 weeks after they are planted when the tubers start to develop. Hopefully
already we should be able to predict a heavier yield than last year. Of course a good soaking once a week during the summer would be ideal. This month brings so many salad crops and vegetables to the table, too many to mention them all. A few of my favourites are heritage beetroots and carrots, broad beans, runner beans, peas, spring greens and new potatoes. Tomatoes, lettuce, reddish and watercress are some of the great salads around. Favourite fruits of the month are gooseberries, strawberries and raspberries. John Hurd, our longstanding watercress grower from near Warminster, produces and supplies us with all of our watercress which we in turn send out to our customers in the area.

½ tsp salt 2 eggs 4 brioche buns, halved 50g baby spinach leaves 1 large tomato, sliced 1 small red onion, sliced ½ cucumber, peeled into ribbons Tzatziki, to serve Method Put the courgette in a clean tea towel and squeeze tightly to remove any liquid. Tip into a large bowl and add the carrot, halloumi, onion, breadcrumbs, cumin, coriander, salt and eggs. Stir well to combine. Put just over half the mixture in a
food processor and pulse until the mixture starts to stick together. Return this back to the reserved mixture and mix well. Divide the mixture into 4 and shape into patties. Heat a barbecue or griddle pan to a medium heat. Cook the burgers for 4-5 mins each side or until golden and cooked through. Add the burger buns to the barbecue until lightly toasted. To assemble, place spinach leaves on the bottom of each bun. Top with the burger, a slice of tomato, a cucumber ribbon and a spoonful of tzatziki. THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE 29
recipes Method Put the asparagus spears in a deep frying pan or wide saucepan (large enough for the asparagus to lie flat in a single layer) with enough water to barely cover. Put over a high heat and boil for 3 mins until the asparagus is nearly tender. Refresh under cold water, drain and tip the asparagus onto a chopping board. Cut each spear in half across the middle.
BBQ ONION STEAKS Serves 4 Ingredients 2 tbsp ketchup ½ tbsp balsamic vinegar 1½ tbsp clear honey 1 tbsp American or Dijon mustard 1 tsp roughly chopped fresh rosemary leaves, plus sprigs to garnish oil, for brushing 4 onions Method Soak 4 wooden skewers in cold water for 30 mins. Meanwhile, make the glaze by mixing together the ketchup, vinegar, honey and mustard in a bowl. Stir through the chopped rosemary and set aside.
glaze and place on the grill. Cook for 20-25 mins until charred and tender, turning the skewers and brushing with more glaze regularly. Garnish with the fresh rosemary sprigs and drizzle over any remaining glaze to serve.
asparagus & halloumi skewers Serves 4 Ingredients 12 long asparagus spears 1 x 225g pack light halloumi, cut into 8 long spears 1 tbsp olive oil ½ lemon, zested and juiced 1 small handful mint, finely shredded
Thread an asparagus length onto two skewers horizontally, one skewer sticking through at each end. Follow this with a halloumi spear, then another asparagus length, then halloumi, then asparagus. Repeat with the remaining skewers and ingredients to make four doubleskewers in total. Drizzle with olive oil and season lightly with salt and pepper (remembering that halloumi is salty). If using a barbecue, make sure the coals are white-hot with no trace of flame. Lay the skewers directly onto the barbecue bars (You may need to work in batches). Leave undisturbed for 2-3 mins, until well-marked with griddle lines. Flip each skewer to cook the other side in the same way. Remove to a platter or serving plates. Line up 3-4 of the slices flat on your chopping board then carefully insert a skewer through the centre of the slices (as you would a lollipop or kebab). DANNY ADAMS, executive chef and landlord at The Greyhound in Bromham, The George at Sandy Lane and The Canal Tavern in Bradford-on-Avon, talks favourite dishes, national awards, memorable events and Scotch eggs! What was your first job in catering? I started out at as a kitchen porter at The Duke William, Ickham, Canterbury, Kent in 1991. Where have you worked before? The White Horse Inn, Compton Bassett for nine years where I gained an AA Rosette. We left and became the landlords of The Greyhound, Bromham in 2016. The Greyhound has recently had some awards success... can you tell us about it? Yes, we were really chuffed to be named as finalists in the BII Licensee of The Year (LOYA) 2019 awards. It was a national award sponsored by Sky and the other finalists were based in London, Essex, Norfolk, Nottingham and Cumbria! It was great to make it to the final, testament to the hard work put in by our whole team. What is the first dish you mastered? A Sunday roast – the BEST! Danny has been at The Greyhound with wife Tara since 2016
Do you have any favourite local suppliers? Our pork is sourced from Padfields Pork very local to us in Seend, all other meat is sourced from Wiltshire and Somerset (where possible) and veg, when available, from our own village of Bromham. Last month we looked at staycation spots. This time round, LISA ROCKLIFFE and family ventured to the Algarve in search of some sun.

I
’ve been to the Algarve many times as a child, but this was the first time I’d been back with a family of my own. Two children in tow, we headed for a villa on the outskirts of Vale Do Lobo, one of the best-known spots in the Algarve along with Vilamoura, Lagos and Albufeira. Vale Do Lobo is less than half an hour from Faro airport, and Faro is just a 2hr 30m plane journey from Bristol. It’s so close you can do the whole journey door to door in a morning – so it’s perfect if you are travelling with young children. Vale Do Lobo and its neighbour Quinta Do Lago are particularly well known for their amazing golf courses, but that was far from our minds as we dotted down. We went in search of some reliable sunshine (the Algarve has one of the best climates in Europe and sees little rainfall from April to October) and some great family fun. Our villa was based next to Dunas Douradas Beach Club and came equipped with a heated pool, excellent WiFi, an outdoor kitchen and BBQ and even a pool table. Inside was a little basic, which was

It’s situated in the heart of the resort, where the beach meets an area dedicated to restaurants, bars and live entertainment." a disappointment, and it wasn’t as child proof as we’d have hoped, but thankfully we spent most of our time enjoying the outdoor space, which the kids absolutely adored. The pool was an instant and constant hit, providing the bulk of daytime entertainment. We did venture over to Praia de Garrão, a golden sandy beach that was lovely and quiet and perfect for building sandcastles and dens, although in June the seas were still on the chilly side it must be said. In the evenings we mixed up self-catering (eating far too many pastel de natas for pudding) with restaurant dining at the likes of Bougainvilea Plaza, which has a range of family friendly dining spots. We also paid a visit to The Praça in Vale do Lobo. It’s situated in the heart of the resort, where the beach meets an area dedicated to restaurants, bars and live entertainment. It is a fantastic place to go as a family, with bouncy castles, face painting and more on

travel offer for the kids and a range of restaurants where everyone from couples to multi-generational families are accommodated. We dined at La Terrazza, which offers authentic Italian cuisine, and of course, were able to enjoy our meal al fresco too. We left a little early to be honest, just as the live entertainment was starting up, creating a fantastic atmosphere. If our children were a little older it would be ideal to start the evening with a round at the nearby crazy golf course (giant deckchair for taking selfies included) before sitting down on the terrace for dinner.

FAMILY FUN
There are some great options when it comes to family entertainment and we were able to check a couple off our list in the course of our week. The first was a water park. There are lots to choose from in this neck of the woods; we opted for Aqualand, which is not far from Alcantarilla, about a 40-minute drive from Vale Do Lobo. It had everything you would expect from a top waterbased attraction including chutes, rapids and slides, the highlight of which was Kamikaze, which goes from 36m in the sky to ground zero in 4 seconds. As well as these adrenaline-fuelled efforts, there’s also a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a surf beach, a Children’s Paradise playground for under

8s, a Rainbow Park for little ones with mini slides, showers and giant crayons and a Congo River ride where you can head slowly downstream in giant rubber rings. Those looking for a rest can find some on the scores of sunbeds, and there are lots of restaurants on site too if you want to refuel and go again. Our second big family day out was to Zoomarine, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Portugal. Based outside of Guia, near Albufeira, the dolphin and sealion shows are the huge draw here (with a firm emphasis on conservation and looking after our oceans) along with a spectacular bird of prey display, pirate acrobatic show, aquarium, 4D cinema, ray feeding and more. There is also a smaller water park on site with water cannons, slides, tubes, an aquatic playground and a wave beach! It’s a great full day’s entertainment. Beyond these two options though there’s lots more to enjoy including horseriding, dolphin watching boat trips, the Fiesa Sand Sculpture
Festival, shopping, beach fun and much more. So, plenty of reasons to return next year too!
TRAVELLER'S TIPS
Average temperatures in summer range from 24ºC to 29ºC, so it’s very much a Goldilocks ‘just right’ climate. The sea in summer gets to around 20ºC, though given its position on the Atlantic coast, the sea can be a little rougher than other Mediterranean destinations. Admittance to Aqualand costs 74€ for a family ticket (2+2). Admittance to Zoomarine costs 71€ for 2 adults, one junior and an under 1m (a rather clever way of working it out we thought). Flights to Faro from Bristol via Easyjet cost from around £250 rtn in August. The flight takes around 2hrs 30.

This exhibition, and accompanying family trail, celebrates the art of Child’s illustration, featuring works from her original stories as well as her re-workings of her favourite children’s classics and fairy tales, including The Princess and the Pea, Pippi Longstocking, Mary Poppins and The Secret Garden. Families can enjoy a special family trail around the Holburne Museum and its garden, and the city of Bath. The system in England expects everybody to pay something. Those with capital assets in excess of £23,250 have to fully fund their elderly care in a care home or at home.

ENGLAND CALL UPS Seven Bath Rugby players have been called up into Eddie Jones’ first training camp ahead of this autumns Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The definition of onomatopoeia is “a word, which imitates the natural sounds of a thing. It creates a sound effect that mimics the thing described, making the description more expressive and interesting”. It certainly livens up the way we communicate. It is vivid, expressive and often colourful.
The words can come in combinations, reflecting, as they do, different sounds for a single object. If we look at sounds of water there’s plop, splash, gush, drizzle, etc. And likewise, with all matters windy, we can identify with swish, whiff, whoosh, whisper etc. For the sound of human voices English proper provides us with words like growl, giggle, grunt, blurt and chatter. But for the amazing kingdom of animals the range is naturally wider and more graphic with the well-known moo, neigh, oink and baa. However only English, it seems, thinks that owls go ‘tu-whit, tu-woo’ or a cockerel ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’. So not everyone agrees about the birds and the bees!

WE’RE READY FOR TAKE OFF...

e have just come back from a week long holiday in Portugal (see page 37 for details!) which was brilliant. We had a fantastic time while we were there but, fairly obviously, that means we had to get there in the first place. Driving there was mentioned but when we realized we’d probably have to turn around and head back almost as soon as we got there it was fairly quickly discounted. So we flew, which means we had to brave one of the traditional stress-inducing events of a person’s life…travelling on an aeroplane with a baby!! It certainly can be done, some friends of ours from Australia came over and travelled around Europe with their 6-month old a couple of years ago… they are clearly complete nutters.

I have to admit that to try and get our little chap interested in watching TV shows in the lead up to our trip just felt wrong, but an aeroplane journey - when you are cramped for room and have dozens of other people’s comfort to consider as well as your own - is the not the place to be trying for parent of the year. It’s all about keeping them quiet, interested and, hopefully, tiring them out. I think it helped that we had a fairly short flight and there was no turbulence or anything else that might upset the kids, but of the dozen or so youngsters on our flight not one was obnoxious, shouty or crying hysterically. They were all very well behaved; ours even fell asleep for the last twenty minutes or so which was a definite plus. Mind you, when he woke up on the terminal bus after we’d landed he did look very confused for a moment or two. Phil Rockliffe
