Trowbridge Carnival is one of the highlights in the town’s calendar and takes place on Saturday 19 October. Organisers are hoping to make it even bigger and better than last year’s, when thousands of people lined the streets to cheer on a huge array of floats, marching bands and local groups. Maryrose Mantle, chairman of the carnival committee, said: “Our recent events have become more and more popular and we’re hoping for more of the same this October. The floats look fantastic in the darkness and the event is a great way for getting the wider community involved, both as participants and spectators. The more the merrier and we hope everyone will come out again this year for a great party night in the town.” The procession starts at 7pm from Canal Road and takes in all of the centre of town before finishing at Cradle Bridge. It’s World Pasta Day on Friday 25 October. FRAN STEVENS, aka The Food Wife, gives you a great excuse to experiment with some fantastic Italian flavours.

Take me to an Italian restaurant and it’d be highly unusual if I didn’t go for their Linguine ai Frutti di Mare. At home my version just has prawns in it, but there is nothing stopping you from adding a mix of seafood. I like chilli in my sauce but this is not obligatory, and the sauce is good with pasta on its own if you want something simple for supper. You can make the sauce (minus the prawns) ahead of time; just go up to step 4 and switch off after 15 minutes, until it’s time to reheat to get dinner on the table.

This sauce could stretch to four people, just add more prawns and pasta!

Ingredients 150g linguine (gf if required) 1 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, finely diced 1/2 pepper, finely diced 2 cloves of garlic, minced 12 cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes 1 dsp balsamic vinegar 1 tsp sugar 500g passata 150g raw king prawns Method Soften the onion in the olive oil on a medium heat for five minutes. Add the pepper and garlic and cook for a further five minutes, stirring often. Add the halved tomatoes followed by the passata. When it is simmering add the chilli, sugar and balsamic

vinegar. Cook on a gentle simmer for 15 minutes. Whilst this is simmering, cook your linguine according to the packet instructions. Three or four minutes before you are ready to serve, add the prawns to the simmering sauce and they will poach in the liquid. Add the drained linguine to the sauce and coat evenly, using a little of the cooking water to loosen the sauce if necessary. Serve with a sprinkling of parmesan if you like (this will remove its dairy free status - you could opt for some chives and sliced chilli) and a green salad. THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE 35

Cacio e Pepe is an Italian dish of pasta (spaghetti) with cheese and pepper. It’s a very quick and simple dish that is utterly delicious and real comfort food. Each strand of pasta is coated in an emulsion of olive oil, butter, ground black pepper and cheese (pecorino or parmesan). But is going Mouse-free just plain mean when visiting Florida? And is actively avoiding the big theme parks child-deprivation? Not with the vast selection of other things to do. Honest!

FAMILY FUN Orlando offers year-round sunshine and summer can be seriously hot. So for getting out of the sun, WonderWorks, an indoor, airconditioned ‘edutainment centre’ on Orlando’s main drag International Drive - proved to be a perfect choice for Sophie, 11 and Max, 8. There over 100 experiences on offer here in zones including natural disasters and space exploration and there’s plenty of variety so you can pilot Shuttle Discovery, ride wonder coasters and take on a glow-in-

For an extra cost, we booked the Outta Control Dinner Show, which includes family-friendly comedy and magic with lots of audience participation and food and drink aplenty. The entertainment was perfectly pitched so everyone had a great evening. Max likes really fast cars and at Old Town Kissimmee, a half hour drive south of Orlando, we joined petrol heads for the Saturday night Classic Car Cruise.

WHEN IT COMES TO MOVING HOME, GET STREETS AHEAD, CHOOSE THE HIGH STREET…

If you are moving home, you will need to instruct a solicitor to carry out your conveyancing. SARAH THOMSON, Head of Residential Property at Goughs Solicitors, explains the benefits of using Goughs over an online conveyancer.

W

e all use the internet for so many different things, buying our groceries, shopping for clothes or even house hunting. But when you consider that buying your home is likely to be the biggest investment you make in your lifetime, you need to be certain to instruct a property lawyer that’s right for you. At Goughs we understand that it can be tempting to use an online conveyancer, but look a little closer. Will you actually save money or are there hidden costs? Can you speak to the same person twice? What if things start to get complicated, what happens then? With such a significant purchase we believe you should always be able to meet your lawyer face-to-face first. That you should choose someone you trust, someone you know and someone that puts your needs first.

or purchase. With us you’ll receive a personal, tailored service, unlike large online firms where you’re more likely to deal with multiple call handlers.

5

There has been a surge in fraudsters targeting law firms by intercepting emails and changing bank details. By instructing Goughs you can always pop in and see us to clarify bank details. Having face-to-face contact really does help reduce the likelihood of identity theft.

6

Our experienced property lawyers have excellent relationships with local estate agents. We also have a large network of local specialists and can recommend reliable surveyors, architects, mortgage advisers etc.

10 REASONS TO INSTRUCT GOUGHS WHEN MOVING HOME

1

With Goughs you can speak to your named residential property lawyer face-to-face to discuss any issues or concerns you may have. Whilst you’re there you can sign any documents too, rather than having to wait for them to be posted or emailed.

2

At Goughs our property lawyers have excellent knowledge of the local area and can provide you with their insight and advice based on their own experience.

3

If things become complicated our residential property lawyers have the experience and knowledge to deal with the issues and to guide you through. We don’t operate on a computerised “tick-box” system.

4

At Goughs you will be allocated an individual property lawyer who will look after you from initial contact through to completion of your sale

Online conveyancers often advertise low price costs designed to catch the eye. But there may well be extra costs hidden in the small print that aren’t immediately obvious. We don’t hide any of our costs, we are clear from the outset.

8

Online firms tend to stack up their workloads in order to hit “targets”, which in turn can lead to a lapse in quality. With these types of firms you can easily become a “number” rather than a valued client. At Goughs we always put your needs first and never lose sight of who we are acting for.

9

Once you have instructed Goughs and have moved home, you might want to update your Will, have a Trust Deed prepared or perhaps your family circumstances have changed. We can offer a wide range of legal services and are always happy to help. Our lawyers work closely together to ensure a smooth process.

“At Goughs we understand that it can be tempting to use an online conveyancer, but look a little closer. Are there hidden costs?”

Some estate agents get referral fees for recommending online firms. At Goughs we rely on our reputation and excellent service and are happy to put it to the test!

MOVING HOME MADE EASY...

At Goughs, we have helped thousands of people move home, and we recognise that each move is unique, which is why we tailor our services to meet your needs. When you move with Goughs your dedicated lawyer will handle every aspect of your move, from start to finish and you can rest assured that we are with you every step of the way. THE TRUTH ABOUT TAPER RELIEF FOR INHERITANCE TAX

EMILY ANDERSON, an Associate Solicitor at Wansbroughs Solicitors in Devizes, dispels some common misconceptions regarding lifetime gifts and the application of taper relief.

A

lot of people are aware of the need to survive seven years from making a gift of capital for the value of that gift to fall out of their estates for inheritance tax (IHT) purposes.

• The rate of IHT which becomes payable on death on those gifts is then tapered down from the third year you survive to the seventh year you survive when it is tapered to zero.

There is a common misconception, however, that if you survive any gifts by between three and seven years the gift itself will be tapered resulting in a reduction in the IHT you pay on that gift...

Mr A, who was not married, made a gift of £400,000 in May 2015 and died in April 2019. He made no other gifts in the seven years before his death.

This is not correct... the following sets out how taper relief works: • On death, if you have failed to survive any lifetime gifts by seven years, and those gifts give rise to IHT, it is the rate of IHT on the gifts which is tapered, not the size of the gifts • The gifts must, therefore, have IHT payable on them at death because you have a) not survived them by seven years and b) because the total of those gifts has exceeded the nil rate band for IHT (currently £325,000) at the date of your death. The rate of Inheritance Tax payable on gifts is tapered

74 THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

AN EXAMPLE

The IHT calculation on his death in April 2019 on this gift would therefore be as follows: • The nil rate band at Mr A’s death in April 2019 is £325,000 • The first £325,000 of his May 2015 gift is therefore free of IHT • The remaining £75,000 would attract IHT • If Mr A had died in 2017, less than three years from the gift, the IHT would have been 40% on £75,000, being £30,000. However, as Mr A actually died between 3 and 4 years from the date of his gift, the rate of IHT applied to the £75,000 can be tapered to 32%, giving rise to tax of £24,000 • If Mr A had survived the gift by 4 to 5 years the IHT rate would have been tapered to 24%; 5 to 6 years would have been 16%; 6 to 7 years it would have been down to 8% and if he had survived the gift by seven years the value of the gift would have dropped out of his estate entirely.

COOL HAND LUKE LUKE CHARTERIS hung up his boots at the end of last season and is embarking on a new career with Bath Rugby as a specialist line-out coach. Lisa Rockliffe spoke to him about his new role.

HOW IS RETIREMENT SITTING WITH YOU?

Luke Charteris has started his coaching career as a specialist line-out coach

Great thanks! People keep asking me if I miss it and I’m happy to say no! First day back I had the biggest smile on my face because I knew what the first session was, knew how tough it was going to be and knew that I didn’t have to do it!

WAS THERE A MOMENT LAST SEASON WHEN YOU THOUGHT ‘I’M DONE’? Not really, but there was a time when I realised I was more interested in the coaching sessions than the playing. That, and obviously my body packing in, meant I just knew it was the right time to stop playing. Now I have, for the first time in years I can get up in the morning walk around and not feel all those aches and pains.

WHAT DREW YOU TO COACHING? I don’t know. Teaching was always a possibility when I was at school and you’re thinking about careers but it’s more the last three or four years I’ve had coaching in mind. I got my coaching badges, and went out and got some experience coaching and really enjoyed it.

DID BATH APPROACH YOU ABOUT MAKING A ROLE FOR YOU HERE? It was discussed first about 18 months ago. I knew then I was coming to the end of my career. I had offers to continue but felt I’d come to the end and coaching interested me. Bath were great in terms of keeping me in the loop, and I jumped at the chance 76 THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

“BECAUSE WE’RE IN DIFFERENT COMPETITIONS THEY’RE A LOT MORE OPEN WITH THEIR ADVICE WHEREAS A FRENCH, ENGLISH OR WELSH CLUB WOULD BE A LOT MORE GUARDED” of joining the coaching team when the offer was made.

great to experience those different environments and how they work. There are technical differences of YOU’VE BEEN course but the biggest thing was WORKING WITH SOME seeing how the sessions are run, OTHER CLUBS IN THE how the mindset is different and OFF SEASON TOO... then getting advice and ideas from Yes. I’ve just gone out and got some the other coaches. Because we’re experience wherever I could. I went in different competitions they’re down to South Africa and spend a lot more open with their advice some time with the Lions down whereas a French, English or Welsh there and they were amazing; really club would be a lot more guarded welcoming and open about how because we go up against them they operated. I also spent a few days regularly in competition. The whole with the Crusaders as well. It was experience was really good.

bath rugby WHO WILL BE DOING YOUR LINEOUT CALLS THIS SEASON? We’re not sure as yet. Last season there would only be myself, Stooke or Charlie (Ewels) who would ever call a line out. This season we’re trying to make it so that lots of guys can have a go at calling them – back row players, second row players will be taking on that responsibility – that will show us if there are any guys out there who are naturally good at making those calls. Our extended pre-season has given us the chance to explore those things a bit more. We have a new team this year, new coaches, new structures and new faces coming in. It has given us a chance to see their strengths too.

Stuart and Mike Williams have been in and out with injuries but when they’ve come in they’ve done very well. Stuart McInally is an intelligent guy. He’s taken to it really well and his leadership is coming through. Some of the young guys coming into the senior team from the academy are really impressing me. You can see their confidence coming on and it’s good to see. We haven’t made a lot of signings this year, but each of the guys who has come in is adding something to the team.

AND THE SIGNINGS HAVE GENERALLY BEEN GOOD YOUNG PROSPECTS RATHER THAN BIG NAMES…

5/10 years and will grow within the culture we’re trying to create. Then hopefully we can develop a good consistent team.

AND YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE WORLD CUP? WHO (APART FROM WALES) DO YOU THINK WILL WIN IT? I think South Africa are looking very good and seem to be peaking at the right time. If you look at their pack they have some unbelievable strength in depth and if they can keep their ten, Pollard, healthy, they have a great shout. France and Ireland you just don’t know, they’re a bit unknown at the moment but we’ll see. England will be up there with the favourites too. Don’t ever write New Zealand off either. It should be a great World Cup as there are lots of teams (including Wales), who could win it. It’s wide open.

Yeah, well it’s definitely the aim of the club to have more homegrown players in our ranks, and most of OF THE NEW the guys we’ve brought in are of a SIGNINGS, WHO similar profile and we hope they’ll HAS PARTICULARLY Subheading Subheading all Subheading Subheading Subheading Subheading grow as a team together. RUGBY’S COMING HOME......?

E

ngland recently won the Cricket World Cup which was amazing, we’ll gloss over The Ashes though and hope no Australians are reading this (it was a tie, so what if that means they kept the urn!!) The best bit for me about our success though is that I was able to watch it. This has not always been the case. I reportedly got to watch the World Cup Final in 1966 although being only a year old at the time it’s rather difficult for me to remember. The next significant England sporting occasion was Italia ’90. As everyone old enough will remember we made

2003….working. 2007 Rugby World Cup final against South Africa….yep, you guessed it…working. I did get to see England beat Scotland in the 2011 Rugby World Cup in Auckland though. It was part of our honeymoon and although it was amazing to be there it was only a group match, and, with all due respect to our opponents, it was only Scotland. We had got married in Las Vegas and spent the rest of the next month travelling around New Zealand while the World Cup was going on. They are totally crazy for rugby in New Zealand so it
