TREND SETTING

With 15 year's industry experience, LARA WILLMORE of Axford Interiors discusses the importance of not getting side-tracked by the latest trends.

T

ype 'interior design trends' into a search engine and you are instantly hit with a list of articles telling you what we should be doing in our homes, what colours are 'in' what styles we should be using and what we should be buying. There are trends that are ongoing for a few years, flash trends based on something current that becomes popular or something more seasonal. There is no escaping 'trends'. But whether you live by them or feel totally unaffected, there are more important things to consider when decorating your home. To really feel at home in your home, the interiors need to reflect the distinctive personalities that live there while also being fit for purpose. Ultimately, we want our homes to make us happy and feel relaxed, rather than just to impress our guests. We advise our clients to really consider why they are changing the room - what is currently wrong with it? What isn't working and why? This helps to begin to establish the brief. Then we can look at trend inspiration, personal tastes and how to also be sympathetic, appropriate to the age of the property. When looking through fabric collections and paint charts, clients often have an emotive reaction - knowing whether they like or dislike something by the way it makes them feel. This can lead to developing other choices in the room and a designer will take note of this rather than influence
