WEDDINGS AT THE CHEESE & GRAIN The Cheese and Grain is Frome’s newest wedding venue and has now been issued a Civil Marriage Licence from Somerset County Council.
The venue has been licensed to perform weddings on the new mezzanine area, a bright and airy space, which can hold 60 people for a ceremony. The hall, cafe and terrace area are perfect for receptions so the Cheese and Grain is a perfect venue for the complete wedding package!
The venue will be promoting weddings at the Cheese and Grain especially for the quieter summer months June September and also January - February when bookings are generally less busy for live music. “There is already a booking for our first wedding in the diary for September 2016 and we are thrilled” explained Marketing Manager Tracey Rawlins, “We will be working closely with wedding planners Vintage Rose Weddings too so we’ll be able to offer a full bespoke wedding service with preferred suppliers or we can just offer the space to hire for the complete DIY. We think this could be very popular, a town centre venue, with a huge car park in a great quirky popular building in Frome, with space for a very big party! What more can you ask for?”

Meet the Chef
DAVID PHILPOTT is the chef patron at The New Inn in Westwood. Originally from Broadstairs in Kent, he has previously worked under the likes of Marco Pierre White and Tom Kerridge. The New Inn offers a comfortable, welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and a newly refurbished garden that’s ideal for al fresco dining. What was your first job in catering? My first job was washing up when I was 15 back home in Broadstairs, and I trained at Thanet College. What was the first dish you mastered? Dressed crab, from going out on friend’s fishing boat. Picking and cooking freshly caught crab was a great experience. Do you have any favourite local suppliers? The local farmers’ market in Frome. I have been going every Wednesday since we took over back in 2012. The

What is your favourite dish on the menu? For summer, my favourite dish is the seared tuna steak. It’s served with a classic niçoise salad and is fresh, light and very colourful. When you get a day off, which local pubs and restaurants do you like visiting? I probably say this a lot but Thai Barn is still my favourite place to go. Delicious and fresh Thai food, nice atmosphere and service with a smile.

When you cook for friends, what’s on the menu? It depends on who I’m cooking for, but I love cooking seafood, shellfish is my speciality. What’s your favourite kitchen gadget? My Microplane® grater, it’s essential given the amount of herbs, spices, garlic and chilli I like to use. And your guilty pleasure? There are a few but at the moment I can’t resist cheese and chilli toasties. To make a reservation at The New Inn call 01225 863123. • www.thenewinnwestwood.co.uk

without a doubt the best crops in August are runner beans - tender - perfectly formed and delicious as can be! have such a short season so make the most of them. For all of you chutney makers don’t forget you can use all the old tough pods
left at the end of the growing season to make runner bean chutney, so chat up anyone you know with an allotment just give them a jar of chutney and they will be happy! This month is the last for the best of the broad beans, but you can still take advantage of the new season potatoes, beetroot, baby carrots and fresh peas. Courgettes are plentiful now with the round and yellow varieties becoming more and more popular. Don’t forget the good old fashioned marrow either - it’s much neglected these days. Stuff one with mince, peppers, onion etc and put in the oven for about an hour. Lovely! A childhood memory is of a marrow cut into rounds and then put
on the plates with peas in the middle. Very pretty and, most importantly, delicious! Making their first appearance this month are curly kale, cavolo nero and purple and orange cauli! The best English fruits to eat this month are strawberries, raspberries, Victoria plums and from the continent, peaches and nectarines. For any foragers out there the humble blackberry is starting to ripen too. As always you can email me (neil@lovejoyswholesale.com) with any questions you may have about seasonality and availability. Are you App for a Tree Quest? Visitors to Westonbirt Arboretum this summer can have a more interactive experience with their new TreeQuests App.
W
estonbirt Arboretum is inviting visitors to take part in a new digital quest around the internationally renowned site, which will help them to get closer to the tree collection in a different way with information at their fingertips. The team at the Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum hope to encourage families to explore the fantastic tree collection digitally through the launch of their new app, TreeQuests, which is activated by 50 trigger beacons that have been fitted to some of the arboretum’s 15,000 trees and connect to the app. Launching during w/c 3 August, the free app enables adventurers to create their own quest through the Old Arboretum, dog friendly Silk Wood or for really committed explorers, the whole arboretum, offering a number of interactive challenges along the route. Users can discover more about the fascinating world of trees at Westonbirt by customising their own adventures and following the clues, allowing them to explore the arboretum on or off paths – making the app accessible for everyone. Once visitors have solved the clues and found the next tree on the trail, the trigger beacons will send out an
alert and award a virtual silver medal. To win a gold medal, adventurers must complete a challenge, such as building a bushcraft tower, working out the age of trees and competing in photo challenges. After completing the quest the app will create a virtual arboretum, where users will be rewarded with a wealth of knowledge about the trees they’ve tracked down. Ben Oliver, Learning and Participation Manager at the National Arboretum, said:
Users can discover more about the fascinating world of trees at Westonbirt by customising their own adventures
“We’re really excited to launch TreeQuests, and looking forward to seeing adventurers scouring the arboretum to find the trail trees and win their virtual medals. It’s a great way to use technology creatively to encourage families and young adults to discover our trees in a fun and interactive way. We hope they will take away a new fact or two from their visit and find new trees around our collection. If you’re up for the challenge, then join us at Westonbirt and download our new app!” TreeQuests will work on both iOS and Android devices, and operates without wifi once the app is downloaded on to a phone. Users simply turn on Bluetooth to start their app adventure. Download TreeQuests for free from the App Store, Google Play and the Welcome Building at Westonbirt. Find the heart of your home Leekes in Melksham can design and install a kitchen to your exact specifications, something they did to great effect with recent clients Matt and Alethea Mizen.
W
hen Matt and Alethea Mizen embarked upon their new kitchen from Leekes, it represented the final element of a lengthy home improvement project and the couple were keen to establish their new room as the social hub of the home; a practical, versatile and stylish area where they could spend time with family and friends. “After several years of house renovation the kitchen was the final part to complete” recalls Alethea, “and it’s lovely to be able to come home and relax and enjoy the heart of our home”. The project entailed working alongside Leekes’ expert designers to create a kitchen that would provide just the right mix of style and practicality – including specific lifestyle features that met the couple’s requirements. With an island at the top of their priority list, the couple decided on a classic monochrome colour scheme for their cabinets and worktops. The sleek and stylish Sheraton Mattonella white gloss cabinets complements the two colour quartz worktops – a classic combination that will stand the test of time. Another key factor in the design process was to incorporate the latest innovation and so, after taking into consideration the daily tasks that need to be completed (such as cooking, cleaning and washing) integrated appliances such as the fridge, freezer, dishwasher and microwave oven were selected for a space-saving and seamless finish. Then, to add the gadget factor the couple chose the Neff automatic bean to cup coffee

machine, with Matt enthusing, “I love all the gadgets and am thrilled with the integrated coffee machine.” Combining functional with softer ambient lighting created the right illumination for an alluring living space - and with the open plan kitchen now the primary entertaining centre (as well as a practical space within the home), it was important to the couple to select practical yet stylish options. “I love the window seat that was designed for me as I can sit back and watch the boys playing outside - and it makes such a good serving hatch in the summer!” comments Alethea.
The design blends style with functionality
Crafted with quality, innovation and style, a kitchen from Leekes is truly unique. With an extensive choice of cabinet styles and finishes, versatile storage solutions, durable worktops and the latest sinks, taps, appliances and accessories the essential ingredients for your perfect kitchen are here - under one roof. ath Rugby has unveiled the new 2015/16 home and alternate shirts designed by Canterbury, the Club’s official kit supplier, which will be worn throughout their 150th year. The colours blue, black and white, synonymous with Bath Rugby, feature on the home shirt in the traditional hooped design. The alternate shirt is in white with a contrasting black shoulder and sleeve detail.
it has been used in Canterbury’s sports apparel since 1949 - and players will also benefit from a range of innovations developed by Canterbury, including super-enhanced fit technology, supporting the varied physiques of the modern rugby player. The shirt also benefits from VAPODRI technology, which minimises moisture absorption, improving the look, feel and performance of the shirt on the field.
The most striking development on new home and alternate shirts is the 3D injection moulded crest, which also features gold highlights, signifying Bath’s 150th year and is complemented by a gold Canterbury and 150 years logo on the home shirt.
Canterbury CEO, Chris Stephenson, said; “We are proud to reveal the new home and alternate shirts with Bath Rugby in their 150th anniversary year. We have developed key features that benefit not only the players on the field, but also the fans, making this year’s shirt particularly special.”

O
Flying in the Face of Adversity
ne of the most annoying things in life, apparently, is children on aeroplanes. Children in the air, as such, is not such an issue, as long as you catch them on the way down. Ha! Ha! It is obviously the badly behaved ones we are talking about. I have travelled all over the world, been to many different countries on many different airlines, some great and some not so great but, luckily for me, have only had one bad experience. The temptation is not to blame the child as they are only kids, therefore it must be the parent’s fault but this one little boy, who must have been about 6 years old, was just malevolent. You could see it in his eyes that his behaviour was deliberate and his poor mother was at her wit’s end. I think if she had been offered a parachute at that moment she would have taken it and gladly flung herself from the plane.
The Peak District and West Wales in the last two years or so and not once did we have unbroken good weather. I am not even asking for blazing sunshine, just no rain please. Mind you endless grey skies threatening rain at any given moment is pretty unwelcome too. It is not as if we are going in the dead of winter either. Far from it in fact, each time has been at the height of summer and we have had at least one day of rain and seemingly endless greyness.
So this year we may be taking the plunge and bagging a late deal to a sunny spot not more than three hours flying time away. We have bitten the bullet and agreed that we should fly somewhere we can pack only summer gear. One of the difficulties of staycationing, as it now seems to be called, is that a decent third of the car space has to be taken up with things that you hope you will never use. Raincoats, umbrellas, stout shoes, indoor toys and games and other accoutrements needed for The reason for me telling you this is the British winter…I mean summer!
