All the latest news and events from West Wiltshire and beyond!

ENJOY AUTUMN AT LACOCK ABBEY November is a wonderful month to enjoy the outdoors in Wiltshire. Nature is constantly changing, as leaves turn from green to gold to red and animals prepare for their winter slumber. The wooded grounds at Lacock Abbey, with magnificent tree species, are a feast for the eyes with beautiful autumn colour. When you walk to the rock works by the Bide Brook the views across the surrounding Wiltshire landscape remind us why we love to

live in West Wiltshire. Warm up in The Stables tea-room across the road, it offers hot drinks and warming meals, and a new winter menu.

From 1 November dog walkers and their furry friends can visit the grounds at the abbey together for an autumn walk. ‘Being a small site we operate a little bit like beaches in Devon and Cornwall, in the summer dogs have the village and surrounding countryside to explore while families play and picnic in Lacock is beautiful in the autumn

the grounds. But as the leaves change colour and we get quieter we can’t wait to welcome back dogs and their owners through the gates. It’s great to see regulars return and there is always time for a cuddle and paw-five from the visitor welcome team,’ says Kristine Heuser, who works for the National Trust. If you are looking for somewhere to take your dog, visit the dog-friendly George Inn on West Street, where you can rest your paws and feet by the fire. Don’t worry, the famous ‘dog wheel’ hasn’t been in operation for many, many years. The grounds at Lacock Abbey are open daily from 11am to 4pm. Dogs are welcome on short leads from 1 November to 31 March. (Please note that dogs can’t go into the buildings and cloisters). Normal admission applies. National Trust members and under 5s go free. For more information call 01249 730459. • www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock

F

ollowing the extraordinary success of last year’s inaugural Festival of Light, which saw more than 150,000 people visit Longleat Estate over the Christmas period, organisers are determined this year’s extravaganza will be even bigger and better again. More than 20,000 individual lanterns will once again transform the estate in to a magical illuminated winter wonderland. Over three-quarters of the glowing scenes are new for this year and designers have taken their inspiration from China’s mighty Tang and Qin

A team of highly-skilled artists from Zigong in China’s Sichuan province, which has been staging lantern festivals for more than 2000 years, are travelling to the UK to help create a must-see event. “To be honest we had very high expectations for last year’s event, but even we were overwhelmed by the positive reaction from our visitors who scored the event as outstanding with a 97% rating,” said Longleat’s CEO Bob Montgomery. “Our challenge now is to go one better in 2015. There will be five additional scenes, with the majority of

the illuminated tableaux being entirely new. However several of the most popular displays; including the mythical Qilin, which are made from over 65,000 glass phials filled with coloured liquid, the giant elephants and the safari park animals will also be returning,” he added.

The festival will run alongside Longleat’s traditional Christmas celebrations which include the santa trains, giant musical Christmas tree, fairytale characters and outdoor ice skating rink. It opens Fridays to Sundays from 13th November to 6th December and then daily from 11th December to 3rd January (excluding Christmas Day.) • www.longleat.co.uk

Add the onion, carrots and mushrooms to the pan. Cook over a medium heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring often, until softened. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute. Stir in the flour, then gradually add the stock and Worcestershire sauce, mixing well. Season and bring to a simmer, return the steak to the pan, then cook gently for 5 minutes.

A Man For All Seasons NEIL MORTIMER is the man behind specialist fruit and veg supplier Lovejoys Wholesale. The business is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month and we caught up with Neil to find out the secret of the company’s success…

How did Lovejoys Wholesale come into being? Well I’m from a farming background. After getting my qualifications from Pershore Horticultural College I came back to work on the family farm, responsible for growing 250 acres of vegetables and arable. I then ran a greengrocers in Melksham, which in turn led to the establishment of the wholesale business in 1995. It came about by chance really, when customers asked me to supply their restaurants

and pubs. It wasn’t my initial intention but it has turned into a thriving business where we supply great local produce to local pubs, restaurants, cafés and shops among others. What do you supply? Predominantly we supply seasonal, locally grown fruit and veg, but also milk, cheese and bread. Much of what we sell is grown right here in Wiltshire, and we also source from producers in the Vale of Evesham and from Bristol Market.

Who do you supply? We supply many restaurants in Bath and Wiltshire, within about a 90 minute radius of our base in Melksham. We also supply schools, care homes, pubs, garden centres, village shops and farm shops. In all we have over 200 regular customers and we pride ourselves on our levels of service; we always try do our absolute best for our customers. What’s the best bit about your job? I used to love being outdoors all day in the fields, especially in the spring. My favourite bit was harvesting on the morning, knowing what we picked would be on sale that day! Although

Neil (second from left) and the team at Lovejoys HQ

"We know all our chefs by name and they know they can get hold of us for information or advice at any time. They all depend on quality and that is what we aim to give them." other people grow for me now, I’m still very in touch with the seasons and we grow many crops to order for our chefs. In the last few years that has included growing heritage varieties like pink fir apple potatoes, stripy beetroot and mixed colour carrots. I also like eating out at the many lovely restaurants I supply to actually see the end of the journey on the plate. What’s the secret of your success? The business has grown gradually and we’ve always ensured we have the ability to provide what our customers want. We know all our chefs by name and they know they can get hold of us for information or advice at any time. They all depend on quality and that is what we aim to give them. If a chef

wants something unusual we can source it for them. We support our chefs with weekly specials lists, monthly newsletters and can also arrange farm visits if they would like to meet our growers. How important is it to buy local? I urge everybody to try to buy British as much as possible, just look at the label. You can support the growers in this country who get up in all weathers to grow local food. They are under threat from the cheap imported fruit and vegetables now available pretty much all year round in supermarkets. Not only are you helping the local economy but you are also getting healthy, tastier produce that is being eaten in the right season.

And what’s best to eat right now…? Winter is nearly here! We are starting to gear up for the Christmas season. Our prep room will be at its busiest. If you are handy with a knife or a peeler and fancy some seasonal work please contact me by email - I’m serious about that too! Root vegetables are the centre of attention this month with the famous Bromham parsnip in full production. Parsnips have been grown in the village for generations as the sandy soil provides the best conditions for the tap root to grown deep into the soil. It also allows heavy machinery on to the field during wet conditions which going by our weather in this country sometimes we are very grateful for! Locally grown at the moment are swede, beetroot, curly kale, cavolo nero, celeriac, brussels sprouts, savoy cabbage and bunch carrots. On your allotment or in your veg patch you can sow broad beans directly into the soil. Now is also the time to reflect on the season gone and plan for the next new year of growing. Decide what you want to grow and go for it! • www.lovejoyswholesale.com

Independent Living

With great facilities and a thriving community, Chantry Court is a great solution for older people considering a move to supported living facility. Chantry Court has a thriving community feel that greatly benefits many residents

C

hantry Court’s ethos is centred around residents living as independently as they can for as long as they can, with a network of support and care available if they require or want it. The one and two bedroom apartments are available to rent or purchase, are all spacious and come in a choice of layouts. Some have outdoor space in the form of a garden or balcony. There are various areas available within the grounds where residents can sit out too. One of the main reasons residents choose to live at Chantry Court is to combat the lonliness and isolation that can increase as one gets older. Very often it is family members who divulge that their loved one has been living alone and becoming increasingly isolated. Chantry Court also has a policy which allows pet owners to bring their pets, which can bring great joy to an individual and make the transition to life in the village that much easier to contemplate. Of course some residents who move to Chantry Court are very private people, and that is completely

It is an advantage and an individual’s right however, to have the choice and the balance of interaction, and most residents like the idea of having the option to be on their own, one to one or within a group as and when they wish. The best and most natural form of interaction for a new resident is the village restaurant, where a number of our existing residents choose to have their main meal of the day. The layout of the restaurant is open plan and a number of residents, after finishing their meal, naturally gravitate to the lounge for tea or coffee, which means an invaluable extension of social integration. [ later life

What does the future hold? Will you end up in long term care? Will your relatives have to sell your home to fund it? We asked ANDREW DOUGLAS, partner at Awdry Bailey Douglas Solicitors, to examine the issue. He and his team specialise in elderly care.

W

e all know that statistics can be misleading. With that warning what do the statistics show? Firstly, that 81% of people in care homes are over the age of 65. If you drill down, this same research also shows that if you are in the 65 year age group your chances are only 3 to 4%. This percentage increases significantly however for nonagenarians. A person who is between 90 and 99 years old – one of the fastest growing groups in our demographic – has a 50% chance of being in a care home. If you do end up in a care home research shows that your average likely stay is just under three years.

a local authority must in certain circumstances allow you the option to defer paying for your care home fees by putting a charge on your property. Statistics are statistics. Of more concern to people is if they do need longer term elderly care will the local authority require you to sell your home? This is a complicated area. The first point to note, and which is fundamental, is that your home will not be taken into account for so long as you are receiving care within your home. If you do need to go into a long term care home the council will not take into account your home until your other savings are reduced to £23,250 and your income is insufficient to pay for the care home.

74

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

If your home needs to be considered the local authorities cannot take it into account if there remains living in your home your partner, former partner or civil partner, or if you leave behind a member of the family who is 60 or over or a child aged 18 and below. There are certain other exceptions If you do not fall into any of the exceptions mentioned councils do have a discretion not to require you to sell where another person lives in the property. Also, and importantly, a local authority must in certain circumstances allow you the option to defer paying for your care home fees by putting a charge on your property. This is called a deferred payment arrangement. Interest is chargeable and other conditions apply.

The BIOTEC Facial

When The Spa at Woolley Grange Hotel launched a new range of Elemis beauty treatments, LISA ROCKLIFFE headed over to find out more... One of the treatment rooms at The Spa

M

y skin always starts to feel off at this time of year. Whether it’s the diminishing light, the drying impact of central heating systems or the dreary weather taking its toll, I always feel (and no doubt look) a little lacklustre come late autumn. So when Woolley Grange offered to let me try their new Elemis facials I jumped at the chance. The introduction of the Elemis range has seen The Spa bring in a whole new range of treatments. I was here to experience something completely new, a BIOTEC facial. My treatment began with a consultation with my therapist Chelsea. She asked about any problem areas I had and about my skincare routine to help figure out which type of facial would suit me best. There are six available, Anti-Wrinkle, Firming, Resurfacing, Radiance, Sensitive Skin and

a White Brightening. We decided that the Sonic Skin-Resurfacing Facial (£70 for 60 minutes) would fit the bill. A BIOTEC facial mixes electrotechnology with all the relaxing pampering aspects you expect and promises to leave your skin looking wonderfully soft and even. The procedure begins with a cleanse before Chelsea then starts to work with the BIOTEC machine. For those who have never experienced it before it is slightly unnerving, but any worries you might have quickly dissipate as it is gently, and painlessly, scraped across your skin. Using vibrations rather than exfoliation, the machine encourages dead cells to come away whilst an infusion of concentrated lactic and hyaluronic acid helps to boost cell turnover. The effect is a more even tone, whilst minimising the appearance of blemishes and fine lines.

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

If this is all sounding hi-tech, it’s because it is, you really do feel like you are getting a state-of-the-art treatment. Even better, all the best elements of a pampering session remain too. After the machine had removed dead skin and impurities, I had a face mask applied and enjoyed a relaxing shoulder, head and scalp massage whilst waiting for it to set. The BIOTEC was then used to apply a final layer of serum to complete the session. And the result? Wow. My skin has never felt softer or looked better. Days later and I can still feel the difference, unlike so many facials where the effect diminishes frustratingly quickly. As well as the facial I enjoyed, The Spa has a full range of treatments available, including massages, pedicures, waxes and a selection of procedures tailored specifically for men; a fantastic gift idea or the perfect pre-Christmas treat. They also recommend a series of treatments to get maximum benefit and have a loyalty scheme which offers a complimentary treatment for every 5 taken at full price. Now if that doesn’t convince you, nothing will! For more information call 01225 865979. • www.woolleygrangehotel.co.uk

TEAM TALK

We caught up with Bath Rugby first team coach DARREN EDWARDS to find out more about the team’s start to the new season...

W

hen I speak to first team coach Darren Edwards it is on the back of a hard fought win against Exeter Chiefs (19-17). It was a tough start. “Yeah wasn’t it just. We knew the game would be tough. Exeter are a quality side and we weren’t at our best. We had a lot of internationals to reintegrate back into the team, and many of them weren’t as prepared as we’d have liked but when their coach Rob Baxter says he thought that was the best Exeter have played at The Rec that tells you what we were up against. We were just happy to get the win and move on.”

With the World Cup going on the domestic season has, understandably, taken a back seat. I wonder if it has been difficult to prepare for with so many internationals missing? “It has been strange not having them around, but it has given the coaches an opportunity to work more with those who have been here as well as with our academy players. They’ve also benefitted from more game time in pre season and we’ve seen some come on in leaps and bounds.”

Rhys Priestland and Niko Matawalu have now arrived. They, like the returning England players and other internationals, Following the opening round it looks like have perhaps not experienced the World a lot of teams are going to be competitive Cup they hoped for. “We are delighted to have the guys back, and the new players this year. “Absolutely. You have the likes coming in have been really keen to get of Saracens, Northampton and Leicester started. Obviously the England boys who were in the top four last year plus didn’t enjoy a great tournament but it is Exeter, Harlequins, Wasps and others up to us to get them back involved and looking like they will be pushing for the top four too.” There don’t appear to being playing well for Bath. They are all great professionals and just want to play, if many easy games. “Worcester surprised anything we’re trying to hold them back Northampton on the opening weekend and manage their game time. Getting all and they have only just come back up. our returning internationals up to speed With the late start to the season the as soon as possible is going to be really games are coming thick and fast, really testing everyone’s squads; the teams that important as we have a tough start to the season in the league and then the rotate their players the best will do well European games will be on us soon too.” this season.”

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

The World Cup appears to have changed things, attacking rugby has thrived. “Teams like Argentina have come along and really shaken things up. They played with such great speed and intensity against Ireland. New Zealand as well looked fantastic.” Does that echo what they are trying to do as a club? “Well we do have that attacking mentality for sure. We look to score 25 points a game and know that if we do we should be there or thereabouts in every game. You have seen teams in the World Cup who look to defend a lead failing to do so and those that have gone out to attack have done really well. It’s been great to watch. Our mantra is just to keep improving every day and keep playing in the Bath way and hopefully we can go one better than we did last season.” • www.bathrugby.com

Come on England!

y the time you read this the Rugby World Cup will be over. New Zealand will have won, although as I am writing this they still have yet to play South Africa in the semi final. Just a thought, by the way, but if South Africa beat New Zealand would the fact that Japan beat South Africa make Japan better than New Zealand? I think it would but then I am an English rugby fan….and not bitter at all! It is only now, three weeks after England were ignominiously dumped out of their own tournament in the group stages, that I can even contemplate discussing the most upsetting sporting occasion of my life.

nooooo’… ‘All Scotland have to do is hold out for another minute’…’Oh nooooo!’ There it was, gone. Not only the hopes of a nation but the hopes of a whole hemisphere. I’m only glad that I decided not to buy any tickets, thankfully the eye-watering prices put me off. I also came to an agreement with myself that I’d not be swayed by the marketing campaign and end up swathed in branded RWC15 gear. The one concession I did make on this front was buying my daughter an England rugby shirt. I must admit it cost a few quid, especially when you bear in mind she’ll have grown out of it by Christmas, but, once in a lifetime etc etc and she did look very cute…

One of the saddest sights of the recent past was in the week after the Australia game. I went into a supermarket and was greeted by a huge box of England rugby balls on sale. They were dirty, the box was tatty and worst of all, they were completely flat. I am English but will always support any of the home nations (including Ireland of course) in any sport so it goes without saying that I’m used to being disappointed. The Rugby World Cup 2015 promised something different though. It was in our own backyard and to have waited 24 years for it to return and then to be over after just three weeks was just dreadful. Then to watch as one by one the other home nations fell away as well. ‘Wales are going to win only 5 minutes to go’…’Oh no’…’Ireland will surely beat Argentina, the weakest of the Southern Hemisphere sides’…’Oh

82

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

well she would have if she’d have even tried it on. When I got home with it, on the morning of the Wales game, she flatly refused to have anything to do with it. Little did I know I have been harbouring my own version of Paul ‘the oracle’ octopus; she obviously knew it would all end in tears. Maybe by not wearing it she was hoping her old man could return it and get his money back. Thankfully her early bedtime meant she didn’t have to watch the horrors unfold, but by the end of the game I sure wish I’d joined her in having an early night. She still hasn’t worn it (is she trying to tell me

something?). We’ll keep her on half rations to make sure it still fits come the Six Nations in February and if she still refuses to don the rose then I’ll be sure not to put any money on England to win that one either. One of the saddest sights of the recent past was in the week after the Australia game. I went into a supermarket and was greeted by a huge box of England rugby balls on sale. They were dirty, the box was tatty and worst of all, they were completely flat. If ever there was a metaphor for how England fans were feeling then this was it, deflated and at the bargain bin end of the rugby world. Oh well, if nothing else England fans are resilient…Bring on Japan 2019…Come on England!!!
