seasons I

Keeping you in the know as to what is coming into season each month is NEIL MORTIMER from Lovejoys Wholesale...

n season this month is an old vegetable, grown locally, that has made a big come back over the recent years, helped by our fantastic chefs. It is the good old Jerusalem artichoke. It is a relative of the sunflower believe it or not! We use a tuber as a root vegetable and they are also promoted as a healthy choice for type 2 diabetes. They make a delicious soup and can be cooked in the same way as potatoes or parsnips and are excellent roasted. If you fancy growing some you plant the tubers in March or April, about 10 cm deep and 30 cm apart, or in large tubs. If you don’t want them the following year make sure you remove every last tuber. They will be ready to harvest early the following year.

Soil conditions permitting you can now sow - under cover carrots, radish, beetroot, salad leave, spinach and broad beans. Still available locally are parsnips, savoy, red cabbage, leeks and purple sprouting (which has been brought on early due to the unusually mild weather). When visiting your local farm shop or village shop ask for Seville oranges and don’t miss out on making your own marmalade, there is a particularly quick way to do this in a pressure cooker.

IN THE GARDEN

Soil conditions permitting you can now sow - under cover - carrots, radish, beetroot, salad leave, spinach and broad beans. You don’t have to have a garden or an allotment, a small patio with a few tubs will do, or even a window box! Get growing. Neil @lovejoysuk Find out more at www.lovejoyswholesale.com

Independent Thinking TOM O’HARE runs local boutique sofa specialist SofaCo Plus in Warminster. Here he discusses the major benefits of buying from independent retailers.

F

or small independent retailers, it is always tough trying to beat the multi-nationals with their large out of town retail stores, powerful TV advertising and expensive web design teams. How do you keep ahead of the competition? All of the above come with major costs, which the smaller retailers cannot hope to compete with. So how do they do it? I was at a show

in the last year where I came across a manufacturer who made for one of these larger suppliers. They were also trying to manufacture for smaller independents, and the one thing that was highlighted in the salesman’s patter was that materials and components were of a much higher quality for this new range. Their products weren’t right for me – I don’t want to be linked to a mass market producer – but the fact that to reach independent markets means

manufacturers building with higher quality components and materials should not be ignored. At SofaCo Plus, since we opened in 2009 we have tried to get the formula right, and so far seem to be succeeding. Firstly, we stock great/unique quality products from reputable manufacturers. Secondly, we have our overheads to the bare minimum and are constantly reviewing where else we can save without compromising our product

Party Monsters

ust recently my daughter turned three. I know regular readers, how quick was that!? Along with the shock realisation of time passing so quickly it also meant we had to cross the Rubicon and host a kids’ birthday party. When she was one and two she didn’t really have a party as such, just some family around for tea and cake, but three is a big girl, or so she tells us, so a party is in order. Nothing too spectacular, the same as before really but with a couple of little people added into the mix. In my naivety I thought that, first of all, organising and then staging a three year old’s party would be simples…. some party food, some party games, cake, sing Happy Birthday, party bag and then home time. What I didn’t figure into the equation was the utter chaos that having twenty people into

we had gone with our original amount we would have been woefully under provisioned….talk about feeding time at the zoo!! Once people started arriving I thought it would be plain sailing, as you can just leave them to get on and chat with each other - they are adults after all. It doesn’t happen that way though, especially when the host forgets to introduce people to each other so they are all sitting around not talking, which is even worse because that means they are looking around at your house and judging… They say they don’t but they will… In the same situation I would! Of course, being the host you are constantly on the go, seeing to it that your guests all have drinks and food, try and chat to everyone for at least a little bit and generally rush about like a headless chook making sure all is okay.

You have never seen carnage until you have witnessed two three year olds fighting over who will get to be the green Hungry Hippo. your home can bring….and that’s just the adults. We thought we had plenty of food until the morning of the party, when myself and my wife had a conversation that went something like this…. Wifey: ”That’s enough food isn’t it?” Me: “Totally, there is no way we will need any more than that” Wifey: “There are twenty people coming plus kids” Me: “I’ll go and get some more”. A hurried trip to the supermarket later we had twice as much food as we originally thought we would need and double the amount of drinks. As it turns out if

That’s the adults dealt with…at least they are relatively rational. The children however….not so much! You have never seen carnage until you have witnessed two three year olds fighting over who will get to be the green Hungry Hippo. Once you have sorted that one out they have moved on already and it’s no longer about hippos but all about balloons. You have lots of tiny humans running about the place carrying balloons, screeching as they go. The parents are sucking teeth and wincing every 5 seconds as they know that at any given moment one is going to burst (balloons not tiny humans full

of cake and crisps) and Armageddon will ensue once again. Not balloons now but the Frozen DVD, no more Frozen it has to be Monsters Inc., no more Monsters Inc it’s now Play Doh and so it goes on, a constant whirlwind of activity and noise. Of course once you have packed away Hungry Hippos a small voice will wail “Where’s hippos? I wanna play wif hippos” and it all begins again. Having said all that it was good fun. No honestly it was! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and went home smiling…at least until they got to the car. Our little girl loved it and, obviously, wanted it all again the next day, I think once a year maybe enough though!
