f you are anything like me, you enter 2017 a little older, a little wiser (questionable), and - following some impressive overindulgence over the festive season - a few pounds heavier. If that sentence hits the proverbial nail on the head for you too I advise you to head straight for our New Year, New You guide (p63), which will help you look better and feel fitter in 2017. Continuing on a similar theme is our feature on learning something new (p21). Whether you want to find or indulge a new hobby, speak a new language or meet a partner, we’ve gathered some great local companies that can help you turn over a new leaf.

The other main feature in our first issue of 2017 is Later Life, covering retirement planning, wills, care homes and care and mobility services and much more. It’s a hugely important and relevant topic that affects almost all of us to a greater or lesser extent - turn to p39 to find out more. As well as all that January’s edition also includes stacks of local news, delicious and healthy vegetarian recipes, the chance to win a Taster Spa Day for 2 at Woolley Grange and all your usual favourites too. Enjoy!

Beating Exam Stress Exam stress on primary aged children has been the subject of much debate nationally. Against this backdrop, KAREN CORDON, Headmistress of St Margaret’s Preparatory School, Calne, explains how she prepares both pupils and parents for success in the Year 6 Common Entrance and 11+ examinations and how the school retains its enviable 100 per cent record.

I

f I have one piece of advice for both children and parents it is to ‘trust us’. It is all about finding the right school for the right child and believing that I, and the staff here, will offer sound advice based on our knowledge of both the children and the senior schools concerned.

“We are proud to have a 100 per cent success rate of children getting into their chosen schools, despite us not being highly selective” We are always considering the best ways to support children both inside and outside the classroom. A few years ago we introduced yoga sessions for all our Year 6 pupils as an aid to relaxation. It has become very popular and helps them learn techniques to clear the mind and how to manage anxiety. But the best way for them to be prepared is to practise exam technique and also to familiarize themselves with practice papers so that they know what they are going to be faced with and will not panic when the real examinations are put in front of them. As a school, we are very much against spoon-feeding children information to pass exams. The process of learning how to access, retain and share information as appropriate is vital, and is ultimately the method by which children learn and progress.

St Margaret’s recommend children only sit the entrance examination for one school

We always recommend that children only sit the entrance examination for one school. This does mean there is no fallback position, but making pupils sit several entrance exams, aged 10 or 11, simply adds to the pressure. We are proud to have a 100 per cent success rate of children getting into their chosen schools, despite us not being highly selective. The correct choice of school is one where a child will flourish and not simply survive. It should never be about survival, what parent would want that for their child? We want them to thrive and be happy at their new school and we can reassure parents by offering certainty around the examination process; this takes away some of the pressure for them and their children.

a given time. We want all our pupils to reach their potential and everyone who leaves St Margaret’s at the end of Year 6 will undoubtedly go on to the best school for them. Some of our children are very academic, whilst others have talents in sport or music. They are all different and that’s what makes them special. But what I always say to every parent is: ‘We know your child, trust us’. St Margaret’s Prep is hosting an Open Morning on 9 March. For further details call 01249 857220 • stmargaretsprep.org.uk

New Executive Chef at Whatley Manor

C

hristian Landolt, owner of Whatley Manor, and the hotel’s new General Manager, Sue Williams, have announced the appointment of Niall Keating as Executive Chef, following the recent departure of Martin Burge. Niall will oversee the entire food and beverage operation, including the two restaurants and all private dining functions. Niall, aged 25, was born in Staffordshire, and his first taste of a busy restaurant kitchen was as a pot-washer at The Fitzherbert Arms in Swynnerton when he was 15. He was immediately hooked on the buzz and fast pace of the kitchen environment. His first proper kitchen role was in 2010 as a Commis Chef at the Bath Priory Hotel - and in just two years he worked his way up to

Sous Chef. In 2013, Niall moved to Nottingham as Chef de Partie at Sat Bains Restaurant, where he remained for two years. He then acquired a one-year USA visa and worked in San Francisco at Benu. Continually striving to learn and achieve, Niall then moved to Copenhagen in 2015 as Chef de Cuisine at Restaurant Kong Hans Kaelder.

Niall Keating added: “I’d like to thank Christian and Sue for this fantastic opportunity. It’s an exciting next step for me, and I look forward to evolving the cuisine at Whatley Manor.” • whatleymanor.com

Returning to the UK to run a prestigious kitchen has been a longheld goal, and Niall’s new position at Whatley Manor will give him the opportunity to showcase the skills and experience from his roles to date, and to focus on his own cooking style. “We are delighted Niall has chosen Whatley Manor for his return to the UK,” stated Sue Williams. “When I first met him at the Bath Priory, his

Djordje Ozbolt: The Grand Detour

I

n a series of newly commissioned paintings and sculptures, celebrated artist Djordje Ozbolt stages an intervention throughout the Holburne Museum, replacing and responding to the art works in the historical collection. The art inside the Holburne Museum tells different tales from

history, religion and mythology. Ozbolt has created a new fable based on the Holburne’s stories and the traditional folklore of his native Serbia. With his signature blend of surreal satire and playful reinterpretation of history, Ozbolt helps the viewer to see the collection anew.

Ozbolt’s thought-provoking works will be placed throughout the Museum and grounds. On the front lawn, greeting visitors as they approach, will be two groups of gnomes shaped in the letters O and D, inverting the artist’s initials and creating magical zones to be inhabited. Inside, he invades traditional still-life paintings with objects from contemporary society, distorts classical portraiture, and transforms sculpture. While admiring the craft and delicacy

with which the pieces in the collection have been executed, Ozbolt’s response is suffused with an attitude of playful subversion. For this exhibition, Ozbolt has been particularly inspired by the Grand Tour and is equally fascinated by masters in the collection like Thomas Gainsborough and Allan Ramsay and by the array of precious silver, small bronzes, cameos and jewellery collected by Sir William Holburne in the early 19th century. In preparation for this exhibition, Ozbolt spent an extended period in the local area as artist-in-residence at Hauser & Wirth Somerset in Bruton during which time he created this exciting new body of work for the Holburne Museum. • holburne.org

Why not take up photography? It may be the best decision you make all year

FOCUS ON YOU Millions of people make New Year’s resolutions every year, yet of the 74% of Brits who made January pledges last year, 63% failed to stick to their resolution, and of those, two-thirds didn’t even last the month! So, this year, instead of idealistically swearing you’ll never touch a doughnut again or vowing to make the gym your second home, why not shake things up a bit and start an exciting new hobby that ticks loads of your resolution boxes…just minus all that pain and suffering. What is this Holy Grail of New Year resolutions I hear you ask? Drum roll please… Taking up photography! Here are just some of the many of great reasons why starting a photography journey may be the best decision you’ll make all year: • Photography reveals your adventurous side and gets you exploring the great outdoors… you’ll be climbing mountains and going on exotic holidays in the name of photography before you know it. • It’s a great way to socialise! You can plan photography expeditions with your mates, meet new people at camera clubs or connect with

MEET THAT SPECIAL SOMEONE As we get older it can be difficult to meet new people. And for those who find themselves single, it can be very difficult to meet someone new. Caroline Crowther Introductions was set up 20 years ago and has a strong reputation built on recommendation – many of their clients join the agency as a result of personal recommendations from friends or colleagues who they have matched successfully. There are different levels of membership to suit individual requirements, ranging from a monthly listing to individual personal memberships, where proprietor Elaine Reynolds meets the client and personally prepares a profile. Typically clients are age 45 and over. Usually, they have tried internet dating or agencies before and been disappointed. The signs are good at The Angel

I

t has been a busy and successful year for Sign of the Angel, what with being awarded 2 rosettes in only their second year and being crowned ‘Pub/Inn of the Year’ by travel and pub guru Alastair Sawday’s. The characterful 15th century Inn has steadily built a reputation for providing high quality food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere, encompassing the key elements of a traditional Inn. Looking ahead to 2017, there is plenty more to come from the team! The kitchen is introducing a tasting menu, available for pre-ordering upon booking, and there are also themed tasting menu events. The first takes place on Wednesday 18 January – ‘Game & Chocolate’ consisting of 5 courses

for £35 (drink pairing also available). There is a limit of only 14 places for the themed events. Held in their private banquet room, everyone will convene around one large table, the idea being that food and drink should be the key to bringing people to together!

Outside the kitchen, the Inn is developing its own kitchen garden in the paddock over the stream from their beautiful orchard, where they already harvest delicious apples. As well as that, those watching the pennies this new year can enjoy a two course lunch throughout January and February for only £12.50. The Government stakeholder initiative has slashed charges and you no longer have to buy a fixed annuity or accept poor investment choice. Unspent pension funds can also now be bequeathed to survivors and even the next generation, often tax free so there is less excuse than ever before! It is however vital to grasp that your retirement provision will need to be in the hundreds of thousands of pounds before a decent income can be realised after you retire. This sounds daunting but there are things you can do. Start now by reviewing any existing private pension arrangements you have to see if you can reduce charges and boost performance. Also ensure you are at least saving something every month via a modern flexible investment ISA or competitive pension arrangement. Is the elderly care system unfair?

We asked ANDREW DOUGLAS, partner at Awdry Bailey Douglas Solicitors, to examine the issue. He and his team specialise in elderly care.

W

ith ever increasing numbers of elderly people (the numbers of nonagenarians are the fastest growing sector of our demographic) means more of us need to take advantage of longer term elderly care services. 81% of people in care homes are over 65. 45% of those in care homes are self funders.

WHAT IS A SELF FUNDER?

This is a phrase used in the industry to describe people who are funding all their care costs. The rules are that if you have capital (to include a property) in excess of £23,250 you will have to self fund your care in its entirety and before you get help from the state. Your income will as a general rule always be used to contribute to your elderly care costs.

IS THE SYSTEM UNFAIR?

The simple answer is yes. This statement is made in the knowledge that if you self fund the cost is higher for the same services as compared to being funded by a local authority. This manifests itself in various ways. Firstly the cost of a room per week in a care home is more expensive. Local authorities can on average purchase a room for £421 - £624 compared with a self funder who for the equivalent may on average pay £603 - £827 per week. Self funders in addition can be subjected to more regular price rises, a requirement for payments in advance, deposits, longer notice periods and the requirement to pay for unwarranted extras.

48

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Quite simply the government can step in to better support care homes and local authorities who are all under financial pressure. They could also provide more rights to self funders such as protection under the Human Rights Act, which rights only extend at present to those who are funded by local authorities. These hopes are unlikely to be fulfilled when it was this Government who postponed the £72,000 cap on how much anybody would have to pay for their care fees and has now got its hands and time full with managing Brexit.

ARE THEIR STRATEGIES THAT AN INDIVIDUAL CAN PUT IN PLACE?

In the right circumstances there are a number of strategies that an individual can put in place to make their money last longer and shelter their assets for the benefit of themselves and others. These include reviewing and investing in the right financial products, owning properties in the right way and making use of Trusts to name but a few.

BATH MEN’S WALK

Coming this March is the Bath Men’s Walk, a charity fundraiser designed specifically for men, raising funds for the Bath Rugby Foundation and Dorothy House.

O

n Saturday 18th March two Bath charities are hoping a record number of men will take to the streets of Bath in the fifth annual Bath Men’s Walk to show their support for Bath Rugby Foundation and Dorothy House Hospice Care. The eight-mile event takes approximately two hours to complete. It starts with registration at Dorothy House in Winsley at 11am and finishes at the Rec, the home of Bath Rugby with a short detour at The George for refreshments! Once at The Rec, walkers are treated to a screening of the day’s Six Nations action, a pie and a pint. This year walkers will be treated to both the France v Wales match at 3.45pm and the big one, England v Ireland at 5pm. Last year, thanks to the efforts of all who took part, the charities raised over £45,000 to help their work in the local community. Participants pay £25 for their entry and pledge to raise a further £50 for the charities. Bath Rugby Foundation General Manager, Mandy Gardner said: “Bath Men’s Walk is one of the highlights of the Foundation’s fundraising calendar. Seeing men of all ages, fathers and sons, friends and family, putting on their walking boots in aid

It’s also an important fundraiser for both charities and the vital funds raised for Dorothy House will enable us to provide patients and their families with the specialist palliative and end of life care they need when it matters most.” Simon Holdsworth, Managing Partner of main event sponsors Thrings and a member of the firm’s walking team, added: “Every year the walk generates huge amounts of interest and excitement among staff at Thrings, and the firm is very pleased to be extending its partnership with the event for a fifth successive year. And while raising much-needed funds for two fantastic organisations is motivation enough, the prospect of a pie and a pint while watching the culmination of the Six Nations championship at the Rec might just offer walkers that little bit of added incentive. • bathmenswalk.co.uk

hose of you who read this column regularly (and who pay close attention) will be aware of the fact that on 1 January 2016 I started something called Kx365. It entailed making a commitment to walk, run or cycle a certain distance every day for a year (hence the 365 bit, although as 2016 is a leap year I got to do 366 days!) By the end of 2016 - as I write a few days still remain - I’ll have covered pretty much bang on 4000km, at an average of around 11km per day. I am, I must admit, rather pleased with myself as I have had to do it when I have been ill, while on holiday, in the rain, the cold and the dark but I have always managed to make time for it. Even my four year old has occasionally chimed in with “Don’t forget your 5k Daddy”. So, having completed this challenge I have been looking forward to 2017 and trying to think about what I could do next. Something that will be as much of a challenge (but perhaps not as long term) as the Kx365 and perhaps something with somebody else rather than just on my own. So when a friend of mine mentioned he was going to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats in May 2017 I signed up immediately. We won’t be doing it fast, don’t worry! We’ll be taking a leisurely two weeks to complete the challenge, which averages out at around 75 miles a day. That doesn’t really sound like much, it’s just words on paper, but once you start to break it down it becomes

Le Jog quite daunting, and, because we’re going from Lands End to John O’Groats and not the other way round it’s all uphill!

to keep anyone awake at night!! No. I shall remain hirsute and just remember to take lots of lovely, soothing cream.

Perhaps surprisingly, the actual cycling isn’t the big worry for

One of the other slight concerns, and one we can,t do anything

“We’ll be taking a leisurely two weeks to complete the challenge, which averages out at around 75 miles a day. That doesn’t really sound like much, it’s just words on paper, but once you start to break it down it becomes quite daunting” me though. I’m also not too worried about the logistics of it all, where we will stay, how we will get all our gear from one point to another, the weather, even the question of whether I’ll be fit enough physically and mentally to do it. We have that under control, in no small part because my friend’s wife is going to be helping us with almost all of it! No, the big choice I have to make, and I won’t lie it’s giving me sleepless nights, is whether or not to have the ‘back, sack and crack’, body hair removal procedure. As you can imagine, that amount of cycling every day for two weeks is going to play havoc with the undercarriage and body hair can exacerbate the situation enormously. I am fairly certain I have made my decision already and, to be honest, it was not too difficult. I think most men have, to show solidarity with their wives/ girlfriends, had a bit of a go at hair removal, but to have someone ferreting around in that area with hot wax, or even, as I have just been informed, bleach, is enough

about anyway, is the weather. I was discussing the challenge with a friend who has done a number of long-distance rides, and he said, quite matter-of-factly “Don’t forget in Scotland, in May there is still a fair chance of some snow”…. SNOW!!! I am not a huge fan of cycling in anything other than what can only be described as fair weather, so the very mention of snow made me think that perhaps I had bitten off more than I could chew. All joking aside it will be a very memorable two weeks and definitely an unforgettable experience. If it snows it snows and if it doesn’t well my prayers will have been answered.
