KIDS DISCOVERY WEEK AT HAYNES This half term, Haynes Motor Museum is running a Kids Discovery Week (13 to 17 February) Is your family ready to accept the Haynes Discovery Mission? Working as a family of amateur detectives, your first task will be to work out what the contents are in one of the mysterious bags.

SAY IT WITH FLOWERS

A museum volunteer will be alongside each bag and once you have identified the contents they will give you further information and your ‘mission details’. Upon completing your mission you will need to report back to HQ with the information you have collected and will then all receive your first mission reward. In total there are ten exciting missions.

VALENTINE’S AT WOOLLEY GRANGE

Aimed at families, this is a fantastic chance to explore the museum and education centre, as well as getting hands on with some artefacts from motoring past and present. See website for further details.

Enjoy a sumptuous candlelit feast whilst the hotel staff keep a careful ear out for your little ones via the baby listening service (alternatively you can book a babysitter with the hotel). Book your children into the fun Children’s Breakfast Club. In the morning the lovely ladies form the Woolley Bear’s Den, the hotel’s Ofsted registered children’s club, will collect you children from your room, allowing you a much needed lie-in, breakfast a deux, or chill out time in the relaxing Elemis spa, indoor pool, sauna and steam room. Something for everyone

E

stablished over 40 years ago, Marlborough College Summer School has grown beyond compare into one of the largest multi-generational events of its kind. Its popularity is undoubtedly underpinned by the phrase “something for everyone”. The eclectic course programme is refreshed and developed annually, with traditional favourites running alongside a wide range of inspiring new titles including An Introduction to Astronomy, Performing Victorian Music Hall, Iyengar Yoga, The Anatomy of Antiques and even Wine and Cheese Matching! While there are over 400 fascinating courses for adults, the comprehensive programme for young people is a winning formula packed full of inspirational activities.

Junior Troopers (3-6 years) and Children’s Activities (6-9 years) adopt the multi-activity approach and feature art and crafts, music, sport and outdoor adventures. Meanwhile, older children and teenagers can choose a morning and afternoon course which they continue all week. The Friday exhibition provides a perfect opportunity to view work from many of the courses,

while enjoying live music and entertainment in the wonderful setting of Court at the heart of the College. What’s more, the entertainment continues long after afternoon tea is served. Daily lectures, film nights, recitals and showcase Gala performances are all open to Summer School students and the general public. This year’s superb Gala line-up ranges from An Evening with Ann Widdecombe to Illyria’s outdoor theatre production of The Lost World – complete with life-size dinosaurs! Bookings are now open for this year’s school, running from 9 July to 5 August. For further information and to request a brochure, call 01672 892388. • summerschool.co.uk

Sid’s Show DEEP SEA DISCOVERY

Want to know how to turn a cardboard box into an imaginary bus and still look cool? Ask Sid Sloane from CBeebies who is coming to the Civic Centre in Trowbridge this February with his brand new show!

T

he trusted star of the best loved, most watched children’s TV channel for over 15 years looks back and forward over his career with a Samuel L Jackson kinda cool. Sid is unique. This legendary presenter exudes a laid back modesty that belies

the tenacious hard work and consistency applied. Talking about being a presenter he says,“I knew I could do the job the day they asked me to don a cardboard box and sing ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ . He continues, smiling with ease, “I also knew I could handle the fame when a female fan wrote in asking for a date, which prompted me to request that I no longer became privy to such letters”. It hasn’t slowed the respect and admiration from those in front of and behind the camera or stage.

Sid is currently touring the UK with his interactive, fun live theatre show for CBeebies fans. As well as performing, he loves the meet and greet after the show because he gets to say hello to the kids in person, which always sparks a positive exchange. He tops the tick list for many mums, is a harmless hero to all the dads and the happening uncle for all the kids “I like to be appreciated for what I do but it’s not scientific research, and although I have a lot of fun but I can be a serious man. I love being inspired by, working with, and being

an inspiration to people, particularly children. I have found a purpose and I intend to put it to good use.” Whatever that truly means Sid has an air of confidence that let’s you know it will be good clean fun. Sid’s Show - Deep Sea Discovery will be taking to the stage at the Civic Centre in Trowbridge on Saturday 18 February at 2pm. Call the Box Office for tickets and to find out more on 01225 765072. Tickets cost £13 adults and £11 for children. • trowbridgecivic.co.uk

History of The George Inn For over 700 years The George Inn in Norton St Philip has welcomed many thousands patrons over its threshold and shows no sign of slowing down.

T

he George Inn is reputed to be the oldest continually licensed inn in the country, with early documents stating 1397. It was named after St George in 1375. The building you see today was built to accommodate travellers and merchants arriving for the annual wool fairs that were held in the village in the 13th century and continued until 1902. The George was first mentioned by its name in a document from 1375, and there is evidence to indicate it had already been known for many years. In 1606 a survey describes the building as “an ancient and common Inn where lynnen cloth is souled at fare times” It was only in the latter part of the 17th century that

The George provided 35 beds and stabling for 90 horses. It was during the 17th century that many famous visitors drank, ate and slept here, including Samuel Pepys and The Duke of Monmouth. The Duke - an illegitimate son of King Charles II - headed a rebellion against King James II and used The George as his headquarters after his retreat from Bath on the 26 June 1685. During the Battle of Sedgemoor, on 6 July, the rebel Army was defeated and retribution followed throughout the West Country. It was in Norton St Philip that 12 men were hanged at the crossroads outside the front of the building. They were put to death by ‘The Hanging Judge’ Jeffreys, who is said to have held court here.

Sadly in the 18th century the prosperity of Norton St Philip declined, but the tourist route to Bath ensured The George continued to trade. By the 19th century it was well known as an historic inn and is featured in many watercolours, engravings and photographs.

“It was during the 17th century that many famous visitors drank, ate and slept here, including Samuel Pepys and The Duke of Monmouth.” The George has also been used in many films and period dramas, including ‘The Remains of the Day, ‘Tom Jones’ and ‘The Canterbury Tales’, also on the television serialization of Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’ By Jane Austin and Daniel Defoe’s ‘Moll Flanders’. In 1998 a major programme of restoration was undertaken, funded by the Wadworth Brewery, which included extensive archaeological investigations into the history of the building. This showed that part of the building had been demolished in the 17th century and dendrochronology showed that the roof timbers had been replaced in around 1431. Roof repairs included removing all 29,750 stone slates, 70% of which were still in good enough condition to be reused. Wadworth’s careful custodianship will ensure this fascinating building, and the incredible social history it houses, will continue serving visitors for centuries to come. • georgeinnnsp.co.uk

Keeping you in the know as to what is coming into season each month is NEIL MORTIMER from Lovejoys Wholesale...

t is with great delight that I can announce that Lovejoys has entered a new phase looking to the future, with the 4th generation of the family to be involved in the fruit and vegetable trade! Our youngest son has joined the company. He has spent 10 years working for a large retail organisation and it has given him vital experience in management. Although we have gone through some name changes the core food operation has always been at the centre of the business. It started off with my grandfather, who was a market gardener in Bromham. He took his vegetables to Bath in a horse and cart! When he retired my father started retailing and wholesaling. I took on the market garden in 1982 and ran the farm until the mid 1990s. I then moved over to supplying the restaurant trade and came out of retailing

altogether. We now employ over 40 people and have a fleet of 15 vans servicing a large area of the West Country. Back on the crops - at the moment it is a quiet month, with only the winter vegetables like parsnips, savoy and red cabbage, leeks and purple sprouting available - as long as the soil doesn’t freeze over too much. I remember having to drill out the parsnips for Christmas when the ground was very hard! The biggest problem we have had so far this winter is with the cold weather on the continent, which has caused huge supply problems with leafy salads, courgettes and broccoli. In Spain they have lost over 5 million heads of lettuce, 3 million celery plants and they have also missed a vital planting window that will no doubt result in a gap in both crops. Obviously this has caused a huge spike in prices.

As always we do our best for our wholesale customers and our advice to you as a consumer is the same. Try to search out locally grown vegetables if you can,as the price will be less and you will support the local grower at the same time. Neil

Feeling fruity with Riverford: review

A

few weeks ago Riverford delivered a Fruit Box to West Wilts Magazine HQ. The box, which was full to bursting, promised enough organic fruit to feed a family of four for a week. Ours was absolutely stuffed with bananas, kiwi fruits, apples, clementines and pears, although naturally the contents of the box depends on the seasons and what’s at its best. The box costs £12.75,

which works out at a little less than £3.20 per person, about the same as a takeaway coffee. That seems pretty good value for a week’s worth of organic fruit. Ultimately though, it all comes down to taste – how did it measure up? In a word, delicious! We may be a little biased, but when it comes to apples and pears, UK grown fruit really does taste best – perhaps it’s the climate, or perhaps it’s just because they are bang in season and low on food miles. Whatever it is, you really can taste the difference. In supermarkets, tracking down UK grown fruit, even when in season, can be a challenge. These apples were crisp and sharp, whilst the pears were practically dripping with juice and full of flavour – you just don’t get

those flavours from supermarket bought fruit. And then there are the more exotic fruits, including clementines, which were easy peel, virtually seedless, juicy and super sweet.Again, where with supermarkets you can often feel let down by clementines that end up being watery and dull, these were a cut above. When it arrived, to finish the entire box between us (we are a family of just three but still) seemed a daunting task. Such was the deliciousness though, we polished off the lot, no problem. And when you have to convince kids to eat something healthy rather than something manufactured, it’s far easier when it tastes this good! • riverford.co.uk

ring to life driveways, pathways, gardens, patios and pool surrounds with SureSet permeable paving. It’s an attractive, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional surfacing such as asphalt, gravel, decking and paving slabs.

WHAT IS SURESET? A mixture of natural aggregate, marble or recycled glass (we’ll call it stone) and high quality clear resin, that when laid, naturally creates minute voids that allow water to pass straight through. This delivers a wide range of safety, comfort and maintenance benefits, such as: • Reducing puddles • Preventing weeds • Contributing to flood prevention • Easy to clean • A smooth, accessible finish While SureSet offer a full supply and installation service, they also draw on the benefits of their resin bound technology with several self-install options including the DIY Kit®, PatioPack™ and TradePack®. A DIY Kit is ideal for small projects or incorporating designs into pathways and driveways i.e. your house number or name. A DIY Kit contains the exact amount of resin and stone to complete ½m² area at a depth of 16mm.

None of us are getting any younger... so what should we know about the elderly care system? We asked ANDREW DOUGLAS, a partner at Awdry Bailey Douglas Solicitors who specialises in elderly care, for his views.

HAS THE ELDERLY CARE IF YOU GO INTO A SYSTEM COLLAPSED? NURSING HOME DO If you believe the newspapers, the YOU HAVE A CHOICE Government’s intervention by raising OF HOME? Council Tax by 3% for the next 2 years and Jeremy Corbyn saying that the state of the system is “a problem made in Downing street”. it either has collapsed or is very close to collapse. That said the system is the system and no matter how broken, it needs to be understood. Key points to understand are:

WHERE IS THE SYSTEM EXPLAINED?

The Law and the explanations are contained in the Care Act 2014, it’s 8 schedules, 21 Regulations and importantly the Care & Support Statutory Guidance issued by the Department of Health. Why not have the system explained to you at one of my frequent seminars? Details of dates and times etc can be found on our website.

WHO PAYS?

The system is predicated on the basis that everybody pays something. If you are very ill the NHS will pay if your health needs match their requirements no matter how rich or poor. If you are sufficiently poor the Local Authority will pay. That said if you have assets in excess of £23,250 you will have to fund yourself. Subject to certain exceptions your income and capital to include houses will always be taken into account.

60

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

Quite simply, if you are funding yourself you do have choice. If the local authority are funding you, choice still exists but if the home is more expensive than they would normally pay they can, in certain circumstances, ask the service user or a third party to fund the difference. If the NHS Continuing Health Care Scheme funds you or a loved one there is no choice.

If you want to know more, then for a free appointment and to find out the answers to questions that need answering email Andrew Douglas or his team on ajd@awdrys.co.uk or call 0800 072 8636. The firm has offices in Marlborough, Royal Wootton Bassett, Devizes and Chippenham. Alternatively, take a look at their website. • www.abdcare.co.uk

HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE SYSTEM?

The best way of getting the system to know about you or a loved one is to contact the adult social care department at your local authority. If you think a loved one may qualify for NHS Continuing Health Care contact your local Clinical Commissioning Group and ask for the Continuing Health Care Department.

“The best way of getting the system to know about you or a loved one is to contact the adult social care department at your local authority.”

Andrew Douglas

The possibility of silverware is on for Bath Rugby as they qualify for the last eight in the European Challenge Cup.

ath Rugby secured their place in the quarter-final of the European Rugby Challenge Cup after a ten-try, 69-10 victory against Pau at the Recreation Ground. The extent of their victory meant they finished above Brive on points difference, setting up a home quarter final against the same team to be played over the weekend of Thurs 30 March to Sun 2 April. the other qualifiers are Ospreys, Gloucester, Edinburgh, Brive, La Rochelle, Cardiff Blues and Stade Français. The European Challenge Cup represents possibly Bath’s best chance of silverware this season with both Saracens and Wasps looking exceptionally strong in the league. Head coach Tabai Matson says, “We want to be a club that picks up silverware in any competition, and we’re going to go for it.” The game against Pau was also the last time Bath’s international contingent will be available until most likely the end of the Six Nations. Five Bath players, including the uncapped Nathan Catt, have been selected for the England squad, with Charlie Ewels, George Ford, Jonathan Joseph and Anthony Watson the other four.

That’s Magic!

couple of months ago I wrote about the trip we were taking with my four year old daughter to Disneyland Paris just before Christmas. I thought I would now give you an up date on how it went… Not well!

it. We then had to find a taxi rank and were informed that it would cost in the region of €50-€60 to get to our hotel. Once our cabbie had negotiated his way round some seemingly random roadworks and diversions, once which curiously involved coming off the autoroute,

oh no, my mistake, that was me. You know it’s expensive when you realise the people stuffing bread rolls, ham, cheese etc in their bags and pockets at breakfast weren’t thieving; they were stocking up for the rest of the day so they didn’t have to queue up for 40 minutes to

“You know it’s expensive when you realise the people stuffing bread rolls in their bags at breakfast weren’t thieving; they were stocking up for the rest of the day so they didn’t have to queue up for 40 minutes to pay €30 for deux croque monsieur (a ham and cheese toastie to you and me) and a bottle of water.”

When you are flying somewhere on holiday one of the first things you want to happen is that your flight is on time, especially if you have a young child with you, as it can often set the tone for the rest of the trip. Our flight was two hours late! It was an omen. Once we did get on the plane the airline staff were brilliant and our daughter completely loved her first experience of flying. Phew, my wife and I thought, we dodged a bullet there. Not so much.

going round a big roundabout and getting back on the autoroute - we ended up forking out over €100. Not the best of starts to a lovely, Christmassy trip to the land where dreams come true!

It all started to unravel once we arrived at the airport in Paris. We had booked seats on the ‘Magic Shuttle’ to ferry us from the airport to our hotel and so set off to find the place where it left from. As there are no signs anywhere to give you any indication of where you might need to go it took us 25 minutes of increasingly frustrating navigation before we finally found a manned information desk near where we thought might be the right place. It turns out that the magic part of The Magic Shuttle is that it’s invisible! Even though on the booking form it clearly stated that the shuttle runs all day we were informed that actually it only runs until 8pm. It was 11pm by this time and I don’t mind telling you tempers were getting a little frayed. Even if our flight been on time we would still have missed

It would be better the next day though, surely. Once we were rested, showered and breakfasted we made our way down to the parks; it could only improve…it did not. We should have predicted how it was going to go when, after about half an hour, we saw our first Disney character. It was Tigger. “Ooh look there’s Tigger” I said. “He’s not real Daddy, it’s just a man in a suit” she said, with a kind of deadpan delivery only bettered by Jack Dee. You know you may not be on to a What did we learn? Not much we winner when the magic is blasted are saving to go to DisneyWorld in to infinity and beyond by a four year Florida in a couple of years time!! old within the first hour of being there. I think my daughter was overwhelmed by it all; the amount Phil Rockliffe of people, the noise, the lights really seemed to knock her sideways. The thing that really upset her though was the price of everything…..

pay €30 for deux croque monsieur (a ham and cheese toastie to you and me) and a bottle of water. There were a few things we enjoyed. The carousel was a big hit - although there was a huge strop when we had to get off. The Cars ride was also good - cue huge strop when we had to get off. The teacups were OK - another huge strop when we had to get off. I don’t know if you have noticed but there is a theme developing here but we were not alone. I reckon at any one point at least 50% of the children there were not enjoying themselves at all, and, by extension, nor were the parents.
