T

he clocks have gone forward, the garden is growing - spring has very definitely sprung, and about time too! We had a great response to our gardening special last month, and hope this issue’s venture indoors will be just as well received. In all we have compiled some 16 pages of local companies who specialise in making your home that little bit more fabulous - the feature begins on p47. As well as interiors, in what is a jam-packed edition we had to find room for family activities. With the kids on Easter holidays, mums, dads, grannies and grandads will find our guide for places to go invaluable over the coming weeks - it starts on p33. As the weather improves so the fairweather golfer can come out of hibernation to enjoy some time on the course - our golfing feature (from p67) has some of the best courses, ranges and retailers around, be sure to take a look. So, that’s three major features to enjoy this April, and we’ve still found room for your all your usual favourites too. Enjoy.

INNOVATIONS AT PLACES FOR PEOPLE

Places for People Leisure have eight sites across West Wiltshire offering gym facilities, swimming pools, fitness classes and personal support. They are passionate about helping local communities stay physically active and emotionally engaged in fitness, sport and well-being. PfP recently teamed up with Technogym to launch the Places Locker App. The App enables members to check availability and book their favourite classes on the move as well as measuring their physical activity both within and outside of the centre. Places Locker will also synchronise with other applications such as Apple Health, Swimtag, Strava, MapmyRun and Garmin as well as working with popular wearables such as Fitbit. The App also has regular challenges so you can compete with other Places Lockers users, helping you stay motivated. If you haven’t yet joined in it’s time to jump on board and start #MakingMoves count...

Places For People has joined the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and offers women only swim sessions at each of their pools

PfP is also supporting the Sport England “This Girl Can Campaign” and have launched This Girl Can Swim sessions at each of their pools in Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Melksham, Warminster and Westbury. These women only swim sessions, with a swim teacher on poolside to offer support if required, are proving a fantastic

way of encouraging women to get back in the pool, or start swimming for the first time. For more information about what is happening at your local leisure centre or swimming pool see the website. • placesforpeopleleisure.org

CLARINET CLINIC WITH STUART KING Stuart King

PLANTS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT Erythronium dens-canis; Dog’s tooth violet

An exhibition of botanical photograms by scientist and artist, Jan Ramscar, on display at the Fox Talbot Museum at Lacock. Following in the footsteps of early photographic pioneers, Jan Ramscar’s botanical projection photograms are created without the use of a camera. Working in a darkroom, Jan shines light through flowers and seeds onto photographic paper to create unique and intricate images of some of the smallest elements of the natural world. “Each image is completely unique and unrepeatable”, says Jan, “much like a monoprint in art … so these images cross the boundary between photography and fine art.” ‘Plants in a different light’ is on display at the Fox Talbot Museum in Lacock until Sunday 18 June and is free with normal admission. • nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock Centaurea cyanus; Cornflower

The day will be split into two parts. The first, the clinic, will see Stuart help to troubleshoot and transform all areas of your playing (open to all Grade 5+ players) The clinic costs £45, which includes lunch

and the recital and runs from 10am - 4pm. The second part of the day is the recital itself, which will be taking place from 5-6pm. Tickets just for the recital are £5 for adults, £3 for students, and under 18s free. There are limited spaces so call Sue Dawson today on 01225 753175 to book your place.

S

pring is here again at last! It brings along with it that fantastic English asparagus season - although we do source some locally most of what we sell to our customers comes from Herefordshire or Cornwall these days. Most of the winter vegetables have now finished with new spring crops as well as the asparagus now available. Other seasonal treats include spring greens, purple sprouting and, towards the end of the month, overwintered spring onions and baby carrots. Most salad crops will be around as well. We may even be lucky enough to see some English strawberries later this month. This is because of the unusually warm spring we have been experiencing, or climate change. This month we are also harvesting wild garlic in woodlands around, if you like foraging for free food!

28

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

Many of our restaurants use the wild garlic we gather locally. You know when you are near it as you can smell it a mile off. For those of you who grow your own vegetables the soil is now warming up and it is time to sow broad beans, celeriac, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes and peas.

“For those of you who grow your own vegetables the soil is now warming up and it is time to sow broad beans, celeriac, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes and peas.

Remember you do not need a garden to grow your own food; a small backyard with space for a few pots or a gro bag - or even a few pots in the windowsill for some herbs, peppers and salad leaves - can help give you that great feeling of satisfaction that comes from growing your own food. ON THE LAMb

Spring lamb offers a delicate flavour and succulent, tender texture. Make the most of it this month with these delicious recipes courtesy of Waitrose.

Easy Roast Leg of Lamb with Lemon & Oregano Serves 3-4

Ingredients Juice 2 lemons 1 tbsp olive oil 2 crushed cloves garlic 2 tsp dried oregano 2kg whole leg of lamb 1.5kg red-skinned potatoes, peeled and cut into large cubes

Method Mix together the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and oregano. Place the lamb in a large roasting tin and

make some incisions all over the leg using a small, sharp knife. Pour over the lemon mixture and leave to marinate, covered, in the fridge for 1-2 hours, if you have time. Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Roast the lamb for 45 minutes then add the potatoes to the tin, turning to coat them in the juices. Roast for a further 45 minutes until the lamb is nicely browned but the meat is still a little pink on the inside.

Lift the lamb onto a board, cover with foil and leave to rest for 10–15 minutes. Drain any juice from the tin (use it to make the basis of a gravy) and return the potatoes to the oven for a further 10–15 minutes until tender and golden brown. Carve the lamb and serve with the roast potatoes, steamed green vegetables and gravy. THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

Cook’s tips At the end of step 1, transfer the meat to the slow-cooker dish. Add the stew mix, spice mix, purée, seasoning and 250ml cold water. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours

Method Cook the curly kale in a large pan of boiling water for 4 minutes until tender, then drain well and set aside. Preheat the grill to medium. Arrange the chops on a kitchen foil-lined tray and grill on one side for 5–7 minutes. Turn and spread the chops thinly with the mustard. Sprinkle the sugar over and return to the grill for a further 5–7 minutes until bubbling and brown, but still a little pink in the centre. Leave to rest for a few minutes. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a small pan and cook the onion for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add the beans into the pan and cook gently for 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally until warmed through. Add the cheese then, using a hand-held blender, purée until smooth. Stir the curly kale into the bean mash and spoon onto plates. Serve with the crusty mustard chops, and lemon wedges for squeezing over.

R

End of Le Road

egular readers will know I had rather a heavy fall from my bike a while ago training for Le Jog, a cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats. You may have thought that after five weeks I’d have recovered and, as the ride isn’t until early May, even be back on the bike for some light excercise. Unfortunately not and so, with a heavy heart, I have had to pull out of this particular adventure and maybe set my sights on achieving

while you are resting. Once you have recuperated and wish to return to your half finished Snow White and the Seven Dwarves classic you just roll it back out onto the table and voila! - you can continue from where you left off. If you have cats you must make sure you roll it up when you go to bed otherwise you may come down in the morning and find the puzzle and the mat in a big heap on the floor. This, dear readers, is a lesson I learned the hard way; one night one of our cats had obviously

“Although not being able to move around easily and having everything done for you is quite pleasant at first it soon becomes pretty tedious I can tell you. ” something a little less taxing, like climbing the stairs without wincing for instance! Although not being able to move around easily and having everything done for you is quite pleasant at first it soon becomes pretty tedious I can tell you. Early on I was confined to bed so ended up watching the first seven series of Modern Family back to back and whilst I think it is without doubt the funniest programme on TV at the moment even Phil, Cam, Jay and the gang were failing to get a laugh after about the 100th episode. I had to find something else that would fill my time. Something exciting, exhilarating, something that would make the time go quicker, something that would make my pulse race and give me a reason to get up in the morning. I chose puzzles. I even bought a green baize puzzle mat that rolls up with the puzzle in it to keep it safe

82

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

jumped onto the table overnight, hit the mat and skidded off the other side… I came downstairs the following morning to a mosaic of puzzle pieces scattered all over the floor. And although I was rather annoyed I would love to have had that on CCTV! One of the unfortunate side effects of being less mobile is that I haven’t been able to play with my daughter as much as usual. I have tried to explain I have hurt myself and so can’t do the things we often do together but she doesn’t really get it. I have some excercises given to me by my physio and she thinks that once I have done these my leg is fixed and expects me to fire into being a pirate or a fairy queen, or whatever is the game of the moment, with my usual gusto. One day the look of disappointment was too much and I agreed to play, as long as we did something that didn’t require too much activity. She

chose Lego® which was perfect, no rushing about or jumping up and down just sitting quietly making things from small coloured bricks. We decided to do this on the living room floor so I gingerly lowered myself down and began to build what can only be described as a masterpiece of Lego® engineering. I was a bit uncomfortable so needed to shift my position a bit and it was at this point I realised I was in trouble - I couldn’t get up. Over the next five minutes or so I tried and tried to get up from the floor, in some pain and discomfort I might add, all the time trying to keep a smile on my face while being asked to comment on some kind of princess castle/farm/builders’ yard combo made from Lego®. In the end I had to shout for assistance from my wife who was upstairs in our office. Apparently I looked a bit like a flailing, upturned tortoise but after stifling a few, what I thought were rather rude giggles, she got me up and I returned to my puzzling table and a couple of hours of more refined and sedate entertainment. It’s a shame I won’t be able to do the cycle ride, possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it’s for the best. I wouldn’t have been fit enough and wouldn’t have done it justice anyway. Besides, I have some serious puzzling to do and if I mess that up it won’t mean I am out of action for weeks on end!!
