he kids break up from school in just a few weeks time and six weeks of summer holidays are stretching out in front of us. For parents, keeping the kids entertained can seem a little daunting. Hopefully there’ll be a holiday to the coast or abroad to look forward to (see our summer beauty essentials on p72!) but for the rest of the time, what will you do to keep them amused?! Fear not, The West Wilts Magazine has been beavering away to provide you with 18 pages of inspiration on things to do, from museum trips and gardens to animal parks, go karts and summer camps. The feature starts on p41. Rugby fans will also be keen to find out more about Bath Rugby’s community summer camps - see p78 for details on that too. As well as occupying the kids, over the summer, when the weather is fine nothing beats dining al fresco. We head outside to discover some of the best gardens and terraces in the region where you can do just that... (p19). Also on the foodie front, we’ve been having a word with Leigh Evans, the new head chef at The Methuen Arms (p34). All that, and we still have all your usual favourites, including great drinks recipes to keep you cool on hot days. Enjoy.

FUNDRAISERS AT PINE RIDGE DOG SANCTUARY

Pine Ridge Dog Sanctuary was founded by the late Bernard Cuff in 1958 in Ascot, Berkshire. Since its founding the sanctuary has rehomed thousands of stray and unwanted dogs into responsible loving homes all across the country. The sanctuary is now run by Bernard’s widow Connie, together with manager Claire and their dedicated team. As well as providing a temporary home to strays and unwanted dogs, the sanctuary also helps elderly owners and needy families with veterinary costs as well as supporting like-minded organisations with neutering and spaying costs throughout the UK. Dogs are vaccinated, neutered (if old enough), wormed and chipped prior to being re-homed. As a non-destructive organisation the sanctuary places no time limit on how long dogs stay until the right home is found for them.

FORMOSA GOES ON MATERNITY LEAVE

Following the success of their programme of Open Gardens last year, Dorothy House Hospice Care is launching a new series of outdoor musical events this Summer called ‘Music In The Garden.’ Each of the five fundraising events in the series offers a different musical genre to suit a range of audiences and will be held in beautiful gardens provided by supporters of the Hospice. The events are planned in Warminster, Wingfield, Chippenham, Farleigh Hungerford and Bath and will help raise vital funds for Dorothy House to care for patients with a life-limiting condition, their families and carers.

Join the Circuit of Bath Walk this July

H

omeless charity Julian House is inviting you to join the Circuit of Bath Walk on Sunday 24th September. Split into 5 sections, you can choose to walk between 2 to 20 miles of this circular route, which takes in some fantastic countryside around the edge of the city of Bath. A shuttle bus service allows you to get back to your start point.

As participants can start at any of the 5 checkpoints and choose to walk either clockwise or anti-clockwise it doesn’t feel like a mass participation walk and walkers will be able to make the most of the stunning views. Detailed route instructions are supplied on the day as are water and treats for dogs, who are very welcome to join in.

Not only is this a great day out but participants will also be giving a welcome boost to the charity’s work. Event organiser Cathy Adcock explains “We really want participants to have a really wonderful day walking and enjoying the spectacular views. However, the much needed sponsorship they will be raising on the back of this event will help all the projects which Julian House has developed to support those or are homeless or facing exclusion.” The event is open to people of all ages and one section, the buggy friendly canal path between Bathampton and the Canal Visitors Centre at Limpley Stoke, will make an enjoyable walk for young families.

Meet the Chef

This month we spoke to LEIGH EVANS, head chef at The Methuen Arms, about growing up in a pub, feeding the 6000 and wine gums... When you cook for friends, what’s on the menu? Nothing beats a great roast dinner at home with all your friends around, enjoying a glass of wine or two. Which local pubs and restaurants do you like visiting? My absolute favourite is The Longs Arms in South Wraxall. Its got a fantastic atmosphere, brilliant service, and incredible food. Rob is always at the stove, and he delivers consistently. I can’t recommend them enough.

What was your first job in catering? I grew up in a family run pub and was in the kitchen from 8 years old, always wanting to help out. By 13 I was running my own service. It was a fantastic platform for my future. I left the family business at 17 and took on my first serious role at the Royal Crescent Hotel. Where have you worked previously? At the Royal Crescent I worked up to sous chef alongside Gordon Jones. I then took on my first role as head chef at The Chequers in Bath. This was my baby, and helped me earn a great reputation in the industry, gaining multiple awards in the process. After nearly six years, I needed a new challenge, so I took on the head chef role at Combe Grove, Bath. And now it brings me to the beautiful Methuen Arms. A stunning property. A pub with rooms. It has a great reputation, and myself and the team have plans to take it to the next level. It’s a very exciting place to be.

34

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

Do you have any favourite local suppliers? We use Ruby & White butchers, who supply us with great quality local produce. Eades Greengrocers of Bath are another fantastic local supplier. What is your favourite dish on the menu? At the moment we have a beautiful summery Bloody Mary gazpacho with goat’s cheese, olives and nasturtiums; perfect in hot weather. But my favourite is our duo of beef, onion-ashed beef fillet, crispy brisket, mushroom ketchup and pickled mushrooms. What is the most memorable event you have cooked for? It has to be Taste Festival in Bath, many years ago. It was whilst I was working at the Royal Crescent. We served over 6000 people that weekend, was great fun. We made some amazing memories as a team that weekend.

What’s your favourite kitchen gadget? We don’t really have any gadgets... but my favourite piece of kit is our Big Green Egg BBQ. We can’t do without it now! And your guilty pleasure? Ooooohhh a tough one, wine gums! Call 01249 717060 to make a reservation at The Methuen Arms. • themethuenarms.com

I

Feelin’ hot, hot, hot!

am writing this, sat on a garden chair, with my feet in a paddling pool. (note to self, do not drop tablet!) It is, without question, hot. Not a bit warm or sticky or humid or unseasonably balmy. No, no this is proper scorchio. The water in the paddling pool isn’t even very cold, it has been out all day and has warmed up enough so that it is a little like putting your feet in soup; garnished with bits of grass and insects obviously!!

allowed to water it you see, and parks and gardens everywhere suffered in the constant heat. It was so hot for such an extended period of time that even mad dogs and Englishmen decided to stay in and wait until it got a bit cooler in the early evening before going outside.

people who have air conditioned houses or can just disrobe and slip into a nearby pool without a care in the world….if it’s too hot when we are on holiday I even have to keep my t-shirt on in the pool!

One of the things that always happens when we get a mini I must admit though today, through heatwave is that the media always the mists of a 40 year time gap, start comparing the temperature does seem like it might be up here with how hot it is in holiday there temperature-wise. A lot of destinations around the world; people seem to think it is wrong to ‘WARMINSTER HOTTER THAN CORFU’...’ TROWBRIDGE, SUNNIER “A lot of people seem to think it is wrong to THAN DUBAI‘. They pitch it as though, despite already living complain about such lovely weather but I think there you might think “Why am I it’s OK to have a bit of a moan. There is a limit to bothering to go away when I have what I can take and don’t forget we are Northern all the sunshine I need right here?” European and just aren’t built for such heat.” They never mention the fact that you when you go away you head Being a survivor of the “Summer of complain about such lovely weather to an air conditioned villa with ‘76” you would think this might be but I think it’s OK to have a bit of swimming pool, or that there’s a water off a duck’s back to me. We a moan. There is a limit to what I lovely restaurant in a little fishing are not even into the situation of can take and don’t forget we are village where you order your food having to collect water at the end Northern European and just aren’t as they land the catch. They forget of the street in whatever utensils built for such heat. I come from Irish to mention that the closest you will you can find, yet, so have a long stock and am about as light skinned get to that is being there when the way to go before we challenge as you can get….my wife says I‘m so fish delivery turns up from Brixham that behemoth as a hot summer. white I’m blue. Consequently I have at your local pub and that the It’s funny but if you were there you to absolutely slather myself in factor nearest you get to a private pool is always use it as a benchmark for 50 sun cream if there is a break in dangling your feet in a lukewarm hot summers, whilst people who the clouds in December let alone paddling pool that may or may not weren’t there don’t understand how a full on summer’s day in June. This have been wee’d in by the kids that hot it was. We lived in Southwick at means I am currently donning long were using it yesterday!!! the time and I can remember the shorts, a t-shirt, a fetching sun hat tarmac on the pavements behind with a neck protection thingy and our house, not melting exactly, but generous amounts on factor 50. Phil Rockliffe certainly becoming sticky enough Having to be so covered up in hot so that we weren’t allowed in the weather is pretty uncomfortable I house without taking our shoes can tell you. off in case we ruined the carpets. Everything was dry and dusty, our I am sure the ones who complain grass was no longer green, not about the complainers are the same
