T

his month we have seen children return to school - some making the move up to the next stage of their education. For others, this is yet to come. Autumn is the time to start thinking about the academic year 2018/19, and with this in mind head to p45 for our annual education guide. There are 12 pages full of info on schools, open days, tuition, further education and other learning opportunities.

6

Away from education, this month we have been out and about in our county town. Trowbridge is undergoing great changes at the moment, a huge increase in its population has seen improvements to infrastructure as well as an abundance of great local and national stores opening up. We take you on a 12 page tour of the town from p21.

35

As well as those two big features we’ve still got plenty of your usual favourites including great local places to dine, delicious curry recipes, wonderful ideas for the home, fitness and spa treats and much more.Turn the page to get started and we’ll catch up again next month. Enjoy.

FRACTURED ARCHITECTURE AT LACOCK ABBEY

This month is your last chance to enjoy the photography exhibtiion ‘Fractured Architecture’ at Lacock Abbey. The exhibition, which has been running since late June, comes to an end on 24 September.

Westminster Abbey

In the exhibition German photo artist, Thomas Kellner, presents an exhibition of cubist photography of the seemingly dancing architecture of famous landmarks. Thomas is known for his photographs of familiar structures from all over the world. Even though his photographs show well known buildings whose ‘straight’ pictures would be immediately recognisable, his work is often referred to as Cubism considering that his creative process includes a construction but with the results resembling a deconstruction. ‘Fractured Architecture, Cubist Photographs’ is on display at the Fox Talbot Museum and is free with normal admission. • nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock

FLIGHTS OF FANCY FOR BOA ARTS FEST AUTUMN EVENTS AT

Bradford on Avon Arts Festival , which this year runs from Saturday 2 to Sunday 17 September, continues to provide a varied, stimulating and entertaining late summer programme. Trowbridge Carnival organisers are looking for ‘Trowbridge Superheroes’, who will be celebrated at this year’s carnival on Saturday 21 October. Anyone can be entered, regardless of age. You could nominate a child who has recently swum their first length, a tireless charity worker, a centenarian or perhaps just a good samaritan neighbour that goes out of their way to help others.

Meet the Chef

This month we spoke to TOM FURNIVAL, head chef at The Steak & Lobster Shack, about local produce, ultimate burgers and flame grills... What is your favourite dish on the menu? The Lobster Bake is a huge favourite; half a lobster, tiger prawns, mussels and new potatoes in a beautiful lemon, garlic and white wine sauce. It doesn’t disappoint. I can’t overlook The Ultimate Burger either. A lot of time went into finding the perfect mix of lean beef and fat. The burger comes with crispy homemade onion rings, bacon, lettuce, tomato and a rich melted cheese.

What was your first job in catering? My first experience working in a kitchen was at 13. I was a kitchen porter at The Crown in Bathford. It was here, under the late great Micky Higgins, that my desire to pursue a career in food was sparked. Where have you worked previously? At The Beaufort on London Road in Bath where I progressed to sous chef alongside Jack Scarterfield. I gained invaluable experience during my time there, creating a diverse, hearty and always memorable range of dishes in a busy and wholesome pub. I went on to work at The Combe Grove Manor and The Methuen Arms in Corsham both under the brilliant Leigh Evans. Do you have any favourite local suppliers?

38

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

We use Style Farm Butchers in Warminster who supply us with great local beef and Lovejoys of Melksham supply great tasting local fruit and veg. It is important to me that the produce we are using is local, fresh and in season. One day I hope to have my own place and using great quality local produce will always be at the heart of what I do.

Which local pubs and restaurants do you like visiting? I love to eat at Combe Grove Manor; it’s just such a beautiful place. The Fox & Hounds in Farleigh Wick is also great; Michelle makes very good wholesome food and you will always leave with a smile. When you cook for friends, what’s on the menu? On any day other than Sunday It has to be Thai food, you can’t beat a duck panang curry with coconut rice. But Sundays are reserved for a roast with the family. What’s your favourite kitchen gadget? I don’t really have any gadgets, but I couldn’t live without my flame grill. And your guilty pleasure? My guilty pleasure has to be Chinese food. Simon at China Garden in Newtown in Trowbridge is always good. Call 01225 763046 to book a table at The Steak & Lobster Shack.

Legal Q&A

ADRIAN NORTHALL, a Partner at Wansbroughs Solicitors in Devizes, is an expert in Family Law and here discusses divorce and separation. WHY SHOULD I USE A SOLICITOR TO OVERSEE MY DIVORCE? There are two main aspects to a divorce, there is the divorce process itself and the associated financial matters. The divorce process is not overly complicated however even after the divorce is finalised either party could make a financial claim against their ex-spouse at any time in the future. The only way to achieve any finality in the finances is by an Order of the Court. There is no set formula for calculating a financial settlement on divorce – the court has to consider all the circumstances in each case. When considering these circumstances, different judges may reach a range of solutions on identical facts, all of which would be within their judicial discretion. There is case law however that has established the approach the court should take which is why it is important to always seek independent advice from a solicitor specialising in Family Law. If you do not use a solicitor you can run the risk of agreeing to something that is not in your best interests. Alternatively, if you are the party with greater financial resources, you may be agreeing to something that may leave you vulnerable to further claims, should the finances not be dealt with properly. HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO PAY IN SOLICITORS’ FEES? These two are the most frequently asked questions at the start of a divorce and associated financial matters. The divorce process itself an average can take around 4 to 6 months but only if it is straight-

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

forward. It can take longer than this if there are complications. It is usually advisable to wait until you have a financial settlement before taking the final step which is to apply for Decree Absolute. The court fee for a divorce at the moment is £550 and if you have a solicitor representing you, you will have their fees on top of that, which can vary. Financial matters basically take as long as they need to - if matters are agreed relatively quickly, a solicitor can draft the financial order and send this to the court as soon as the divorce reaches Decree Nisi stage and so the financial matters may also be concluded within the 4 to 6 months. However, more often than not, the financial matters can take much longer. In cases that involve complex finances and/or the parties simply cannot agree then the time estimate will run to years rather than months. It is hard to provide a time estimate from the outset because it depends on the approach of the parties. MY RELATIONSHIP HAS HIT THE ROCKS. OTHER THAN DIVORCE, WHAT OPTIONS ARE OPEN TO US? Judicial Separation: If you are married, and you wish to separate but you do not want to divorce, you may wish to consider a Judicial Separation. You can still resolve most of the financial matters in the same way as a divorce - you remain married but legally separated. Separation Agreement: If you do not intend to divorce or consider Judicial Separation you may wish to make your financial arrangements formal by entering into a Separation

Agreement. These are not binding in the same way as an Order from the Court, and either party could still start divorce proceedings and make an application to court to commence financial proceedings, but they can be a useful way of documenting what the parties have agreed. Marriage Counselling: If a relationship is on the rocks marriage counselling can help couples work to save their marriage. If counselling does not help, the mediation process is available to help couples work out a way to achieve an amicable separation/divorce. The above is not a substitute for legal advice and if you are considering separation you should see a solicitor. At Wansbroughs, we provide friendly, expert legal advice to help clients try to resolve their difficulties and provide all clients with an initial free half hour appointment to discuss what options are available and how best to proceed. SECOND SEASON SYNDROME...

Expectations are high at Bath Rugby ahead of the 2017/8 season

W

ith new signings in key areas, an improved sense of togetherness and the coaching team having a full pre-season to work on new systems and strategies, the club is in confident mood ahead of the 2017/8 season.

club, the standouts are Freddie Burns and Sam Underhill, with new flyhalf Josh Lewis also looking good in pre-season. All three should be well drilled come the first match away at Leicester on 3 September.

FULL PRE-SEASON

Last season Bath were blighted by injuries to key players like Dave Attwood, Taulupe Faletau, Matt Banahan and Matt Garvey. They will be hoping to be luckier on the injury front this season. Great news for Bath is that Francois Louw has completed his first ever pre-season with the club (having always been on international duty previously) and will be available from round one having not been selected for The Rugby Championship. Bath will also be hoping the likes of Taulupe Faletau and Anthony Watson return from Lions duty in the same kind of form they showed on tour in New Zealand.

Last season Bath had no head coach in place until two weeks before the start of the season, affecting preparation and limiting their influence. Todd Blackadder and Tabai Matson had little time to implement new tactics, and no great say in their personnel. This time round the pair have been fully involved in pre-season, which has seen the club out training within the local community and having competitive sessions against the likes of London Irish. Without the excuse of it being a transitional year, Blackadder will expect to see progress - top four in the league will be the minimum expectation of the team.

NEW SIGNINGS Fewer players have been signed this year, but following an influx of new recruits last season that’s hardly surprising. Of the new faces at the New Club Captain Matt Garvey

Bath’s coaches have overseen all this year’s pre-season

INJURIES

NEW CLUB CAPTAIN Last season’s club captain Guy Mercer struggled to get game time. This season Matt Garvey has been appointed Club Captain. Even with Sam Underhill coming in, stalwart Garvey should be able to bring his

considerable presence to bear on the squad from where it is ultimately most important – on the field.

DIFFICULT START Bath face Leicester, Saracens, Northampton and Wasps in the first five weeks of the season. How they emerge from that fixture list should tell us a great deal about how they are shaping up for the season ahead. • bathrugby.com

hose of you familiar with these musings every month will remember that back in February I had a tumble from my bike. Consequently all exercise had to stop for a while until I was fixed….which I am still not….six months later!!! I have, though, been able to resume some physical activity, although that has been pretty tough at times as I may have gained a few pounds. The only running I’ve been doing is to the

I think I’m gliding through the water with the grace and aplomb of an Olympic swimmer when in fact I am gliding through the water with the grace and aplomb of an Olympic shot putter. One of the things about public swimming pools that is always a constant, unfortunately, is other people….the general public if you will. Another thing that annoys a tad is the Swimtag®. It’s a brilliant idea, like a watch that you wear in the pool and it measures how far you have swum, what stroke you have been “One thing that really gets me are the people - and swimming, metres/stroke, what there are a few of them in the sessions I go to - who colour your trunks are, whether you broken any of the running, basically go along to socialise.
