ver the last few weeks the season has most definitely changed. Gone are the long light evenings and in comes cosy nights spent by warm log fires. As we look inwards now seems an excellent time to focus on the home, and we’ve gone to town with some 20+ pages on interiors. Enjoy this great feature from p41. As well as looking inside, dare I say it but the more organised among us will already be looking forward to Christmas! Yes the leaves are only just starting to fall but one must get ahead to secure the best times and spots at the area’s finest eateries. We’ve scoured pubs, restaurants and hotels for some of the best options around if you want to book your festive knees up - see p21 for more. Those two features unsurprisingly take up much of the space this issue, but fear not there’s plenty of other things to read about, including some great local events and fundraisers, National Spa Week in Bath, delicious recipes making the most of seasonal root veg and all your usuals too. Enjoy.

THRESHOLDS FROM MAT COLLISHAW Go back in time to the dawn of photography at Lacock Abbey with ‘Thresholds’, a new virtual reality artwork by Mat Collishaw. Using the latest in VR technology, Collishaw is set to restage one of the world’s first major exhibitions of photography for contemporary audiences. Visitors will travel back in time to 1839, when British scientist William Henry Fox Talbot first presented his photographic prints to the public. Mat Collishaw said: “There are alternate levels of reality and unreality. This is a virtual reality of a virtual reality of reality.” The original exhibition, staged by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, celebrated cutting edge technological innovation. Unfortunately, Fox Talbot’s original images have faded

almost beyond recognition with several of the surviving photographs existing only in light-proof vaults. ‘Thresholds’ not only restages an important historical exhibition but provides a way to view images that has since been lost. ‘Thresholds’ is being held in the abbey courtyard at Lacock from 16 September to 29 October and is £4. Booking is essential and normal admission prices to the abbey and grounds apply. • nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock

Enjoy a Riverford UK veg box!

O

rganic farmers and veg box pioneers, Riverford, know a thing or two about growing and cooking with the seasons, but their 100% UK veg box epitomises seasonal eating and showcases British veg right at its peak. So this British Food Fortnight (23 September – 8 October) if you want a helping hand to get your creative veg juices flowing, a Riverford UK veg box could be the place to start. From freshly picked beans and greens in summer, to the sweetcorn and squash of autumn through to earthy roots and brassicas in winter, the box is packed with a changing selection of 8 homegrown veg, which is then delivered to customers’ doors for free. Farmer and Riverford founder Guy Watson explained: “We like to think of the box as the next best thing to growing

your own.” Although Riverford’s complete range of veg boxes are packed with organic, seasonal vegetables grown on their four UK farms, the boxes are often topped up with items like peppers and tomatoes from their French farm and Spanish growers. For Riverford to grow peppers and tomatoes out of season they’d have to use heated greenhouses, which goes against Riverford’s environmentally friendly ethos. The decision for a UK only box came following popular demand. Guy continues, “Nowadays it’s easy for consumers to lose touch with seasonality, due to the year-round supply in supermarkets. Our customers really enjoy seasonal eating and cooking with veg at its best. The boxes give them a connection with the food they eat.”

HOW DOES YOUR LOCATION INFLUENCE YOUR BESPOKE FURNITURE PIECES? Bradford on Avon is a vibrant town and definitely helps with my creativity. I name my pieces after local areas which I have developed an affinity for, usually through family walks with our border collie Jack. The elegant Wellow side table (pictured inset)was inspired by the styling of 1950s space comics. The Farleigh magazine holder is a mini piece of architecture full of character. The Iford library step chair is my take on the metamorphic library steps used by 18th Century French nobility.

“The elegant Wellow side table was inspired by the styling of 1950s space comics.” The Chantry coffee table has a unique x-shaped frame, with the legs converging to create a beautiful joint detail. It’s based on a traditional table from the kitchen in the home where I grew up.

HAVE YOU ENJOYED ANY RECENT ACCOLADES? Yes, I was recently accepted into the Guild of Master Craftsmen, which has just reinforced my passion for great British design and craftsmanship. I am proud to say my furniture is made in Wiltshire, and that means a lot to my customers too. • charliecaffynfurniture.com

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that gives somebody of your choice the power to deal with your financial affairs if for any physical or mental reason you were unable to. It is the only document which gives this power but you can only complete one while in good health, so you need to act as soon as possible.

CHAMPIONS CUP RUGBY RETURNS

Bath Rugby return to European rugby’s elite competition this season. Here’s who they are facing in the pool stages.

A

fter an agonising last minute semi final defeat in the Challenge Cup last year, Bath’s improved domestic form sees them return to the top table of European competition this season in the Champions Cup. The first round of games kicks off this October – here’s a guide to who Bath will be facing…

SCARLETS The Pro 12 Champions from last season will be really tough to beat, especially at Parc-Y-Scarlets. They finished last season exceptionally strongly and have carried that form into the early part of this season. Whilst they have lost Liam Williams to Saracens since then, they have brought in Leigh Halfpenny and have a huge amount of Welsh stars in their side, including Lions Ken Owens, Gareth Davies and Man of the Series in New Zealand Jonathan Davies. Bath are away to Scarlets in round two on Friday 20 October.

TOULON Despite changing their coaches regularly last season, Toulon still managed to reach the Top 14 final, and now owner Mourad Boudjellal has brought in Fabien Galthie, who takes charge of the three-time European champions. Whilst a few big names, including Juan Smith and Matt Giteau, have departed, former Saracen Chris Ashton, All Black Malakai Fekitoa and Argentinian number 8 Facundo Isa have freshened up an ageing, if star-studded, team. Bath face Toulon in an exciting double header before Christmas.

BENETTON TREVISO Bath’s first opponents in the competition are Italian side Benetton Treviso, who they face at home on Saturday 14 October (KO 5.30pm). Considered by many to be the weakest side in the group, they shouldn’t be discounted after a surprising away victory over Richard Cockerill’s unbeaten Edinburgh team this season showed Bath cannot afford to take them lightly. Their squad boasts 28 Italian internationals,

including fly half Tommaso Allen and rising star Federico Ruzza. Tickets for the game against Benetton Treviso are available now, and will be available for the home fixture against Toulon (Saturday 16 December, KO 5.30pm) from 23 October for season ticket holders, and to the general public a week later (30 October). • bathrugby.com

About a boy...

t the time of writing I have just packed our only child off to her second week of school. The big news is that as of the end of October she will no longer be an only child. There is another one in the offing and this time it’s going to be a boy. We didn’t want to know if it was going to be a boy or a girl but at one of the scans the screen was showing us something that was pretty obvious even to the casual observer and so, a boy it is and the surprise is gone!!

month, we almost didn’t realise she was teething as she was so relaxed about it and potty training was a breeze. So we think we may have used up all our good luck and this time around it could be the total opposite, lots of sleepless nights and probably two cranky kids to deal with, possibly three if you include me!

jumping all over stuff, trying to break it or if he is a bit less stereotypically male and prefers calmer pursuits like reading or drawing (although not on the walls) and generally just sitting still and not making a nuisance of himself then I will have to be the grown up and step up and do a bit of parenting. Whatever the outcome if it is as much fun and as enjoyable as the last five years then it’s going I am not sure how I feel about having to be great. a boy. The only experience I have with boy kids is the little guys who were at nursery with my daughter Phil Rockliffe

“Having a new little person in the house is going to be interesting as my daughter has very much enjoyed been the centre of attention for the last five years.” Having a new little person in the house is going to be interesting as my daughter has very much enjoyed being the centre of attention for the last five years. That was my role in the house previous to her arrival and I didn’t take too kindly to being usurped…let’s see how the youngster handles it…better than me probably!! The disruption in the house shouldn’t be too great as we have done it once before and we can already see a difference in our approach to the second one…it’s a much more relaxed experience this time around. I’m sure this one will bring his own challenges but we reckon we are more than equipped to deal with it. We do have one niggling thought though, with our first everything was very smooth and easy with no real drama at all, she was sleeping through after about a

and while they are all perfectly lovely, they all seem to want to run really fast, jump on stuff and break things, apparently you have to test the breaking strain of everything you play with otherwise it’s just not worth it. The girls, on the other hand, are much calmer and a lot nicer to deal with. They still rush about with as much gusto as the boys and generally play with the same type of toys, they just don’t seem to have the same desire to do damage. Don’t get me wrong my daughter and her little group of friends, can, given enough rope, be as destructive as any group of boys but they just don’t seem to do it with the same glazed eye, thousand-yard stare, intensity as their male counterparts. I guess the point is that if it turns out that my, yet to be born, son wants to rush about, making lots of noise and
