DSSELDORF EQUIPMENT As ever, wire Düsseldorf is known for halls full of the latest technology, but not all the OEMs who displayed machinery and equipment wanted to focus on their systems. Some wanted to focus on other aspects, from service to their “message.” And, as noted in the event wrapup, one company chose to drop-kick tradition. Below are some exhibitor summations. AIM USA With multiple systems displayed at wire Düsseldorf, AIM chose to focus not on equipment but instead the support the company offers customers via AIM-LMS, an online learning tool designed to meet the demands of customers today and for years to come. AIM-LMS is meant to be modern training for a modern workforce. As a customer’s needs change, it’s critical that AIM as a supplier stays ahead of the game. That’s why the company created an online learning tool that meets the AIM’s Johann Sfaellos spoke about demands of our equipment, but also about the customers. company’s online learning tool. The service is an online, virtual platform that provides a training and content-rich resource that is easily available. AIM packaged content and expertise to deliver learners an enhanced user experience through interactive content of videos, images, quizzes, workbooks and other active learning elements. With AIM-LMS, a company can realize significant savings by training employees online. AIM-LMS provides learners a valuable flexible schedule as they can access the eLearning platform at their own time and pace. This is one of the main reasons why online 54 | WIRE JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL

learning is essential for global audiences in different time zones. Employees can assess their progress by taking online exams or quizzes, participating in interactive scenarios and simulations, and watching videos that highlight machine set up and programming. AIM-LMS includes customer learner profile pages that help managers keep track of learner progress as well as ensure performance milestones are being met. Also, customers have unlimited 24/7 access to valuable information, such as machine manuals, maintenance guides, and other technical documents. www.aim.com.

Bartell Machinery Systems USA Bartell Machinery Systems launched the new ArmourLock™ SA-4 strip armoring system at wire Düsseldorf. The system focuses on bringing manufacturers additional production flexibility while increasing performance and addressing environmental, health, and safety factors associated with the strip armoring process. Now capable of armoring a product range of 0.5 in. to 4.0 in., ArmourLock allows manufacturers to better meet

DEM SpA Italy DEM’s slogan at wire Düsseldorf was Revolutionizing the Wire World. If someone thinks that sounds rather high-flying, then think of it as innovation taken seriously. Proof of that was seen in both the machines and software on display at the DEM booth (see p. 52), which presented two newly conceived advances—the DWR Direct Wire Rolling system for reinforcing wire production and the DDP DEM Digital Platform to match Industry 4.0 demands, as well as consolidated high tech applications for PWR flat and profile wire rolling production. DWR Direct Wire Rolling. Visitors realized how pulling capstans can be removed from cold rolling lines by using driven rolls. A patented quick locking system for rolling rings, combined with a fast tool positioning, allows exceptionally short-changing times.

Attendee: I went seeking technology for an ambitious project in Bangladesh Tens of thousands of attendees come to wire Düsseldorf, each with their own missions. Below is the story of one attendee, Rabiul Alam, the chairman of the Energypac Group, and CEO of Energypac Engineering Ltd., power engineering companies in Bangladesh. He was accompanied by Pasi Raikisto, CEO of HV Cable Solutions. WJI: Why did you choose to attend wire Düsseldorf? Alam: This was my first time at the event. I was there looking for new high-quality equipment for a greenfield factory to produce power cables in a new company I am opening in Bangladesh, which is where we started in 1982. We have imported a lot of cable. Now, we plan to produce overhead conductors, MV XLPE cables, LV cables, and eventually, HVe XLPE cables up to 220 kV. WJI: Were your meetings with exhibitors at wire Düsseldorf worthwhile? Alam: I would describe the event “as one of a kind.” Pasi Raikisto helped organize visits for me with key potential suppliers. The experience was quite good. I was there for two and a half days, and it was very convenient to meet all the potential suppliers in one place and negotiate deals. Some contracts were actually closed. WJI: How valuable was it for you to be there? Alam: It is important to my company to be able to boost our power engineering business in Bangladesh. Through our relentless endeavors, Energypac has now been deemed as a top power engineering business dome. We have power network engineering, make transformers, substations, install cables and overhead power lines. We even have a power station in a separate company. WJI: When do you hope to open your new plant? What does it mean for the country?

Rabiul Alam, r, with Pasi Raikisto at WAI’s booth at wire Düsseldorf. Alam: The site works started a few months ago and our intention is to get first products out in the market during the first quarter of 2019. As typical for this kind of project, we progress in phases. The new site will be fully operational by the end of 2020. It will have annual output of 20,000 to 30,000 tons, and employ some 200-300 people. We hope to be able to contribute to Bangladesh’s ambitions to develop the energy sector so that it supports the already started quite fast economical growth and well-being of its people. Attending wire Düsseldorf was an important part of that journey. JUNE 2018 | 55

changing customer demands with less capital investment as traditionally two different production systems were needed to meet the extended range. Additional flexibility is achieved through the modular design. The Strong Arm™ mounted touchscreen HMI and electrical cabinet can be relocated to mirroring positions on the machine, creating a unit that can fit into either left- or right-hand line layouts. That allows it to accommodate potential future plant layouts without having to purchase new equipment. This system not only has improved production performance by a 50% increase in raw material capacity, it maximizes potential efficiency gains through operator machine interactions. Improved pack loading, integrated sliding doors and off-line tooling setup all allow for simplified and quicker changeovers while a redesigned strip path allows for easier string-up. Director of Wire and Cable Sales Tim Murphy said that the system resulted from more than 12 months of design, evaluation and development efforts to incorporate many aspects of direct industry feedback. “We understand that our customers are under continuous pressure to deliver,
