If this first-time feature looks familiar, you’d be right. WAI’s Board of Directors believes that there are a lot of talented professionals in the wire and cable industry, and that highlighting some of the younger people in a wire and cable industry version of a “30 under 30” series would be most fitting. The age range was extended some, and the goal for this initial effort was to include a dozen or so staffers. Requests for nominations were sent out, and the results are noteworthy. The field ranges from one person with less than two years of experience and a staffer who manages international sales activities and has coauthored 10 technical papers to the founder of an IoT company that has shown incredible growth in a very short time and a longtime General Motors staffer who now heads maintenance in North America. What they all have in common is that they are well respected in their fields, and are the kind of people who by their work ethic and effort set a good example for their colleagues in the wire and cable industry.

His fast track success has already helped garner awards Cody Davis, 30, is an advanced product engineer for utility products for General Cable Corporation (GCC). He provides technical customer support for west coast customers and leads overhead conductor projects. He was a key driver for GCC’s award-winning E3X® Technology, and was a contributor to 10 company patents. He holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering, both from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He joined GCC in 2009, and is active in IEEE, chairing a working group and two task force bodies. He also is the company’s representative for the Aluminum Association. Per the company nomination, “Cody’s been on an accelerated development path with our Utility Engineering Team. After learning wire and cable fundamentals, developing systems and an advanced knowledge of the business, he now leads project activities for overhead conductors and provides customers tech support in the west region for all utility products. He also mentors training program engineers and co-ops and serves in key volunteer roles for multiple industry organizations. He consistently exceeds our expectations. His passion, creativity and dedication were instrumental to our E3X® Technology winning the prestigious Gold Edison Award. He aspires to be extraordinary, and in doing so makes General Cable a better place.”

Very new, very young, yet already making a difference Patrick Morrisey, 23, is a quality analytical engineer for Mexichem Specialty Compounds at its plant in Leominster, Massachusetts, which supplies a range of compounds. He holds a B.S. degree in plastics engineering from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. While at school, he worked two summers (2014-15) as an intern in Mexichem’s R&D department. He was hired in late 2016, and with a little over a year of service is now part of a lab team dedicated to ensuring product quality. He interacts with customers on compound use, and goes to their plants to help troubleshoot any cable processing issues. Per the company nomination, “Patrick has displayed an incredible level of patience and creative thinking. His communication skills have been effective and he has worked well with the older and more seasoned veterans of the business. He has made strong contributions to standardizing our testing procedures, and he is very good at helping customers. He always seems to ask the right questions, leading to the right recommendations. His mature demeanor is very impressive. I took him to a customer for a second trial when we had to modify a formula. As Patrick was so new, I wasn’t sure what he could contribute, but he came up with new conditions and improved the product. He won over two seasoned veterans and a long-time molder.”
