EDISON FARROW BRINGS US

SMASH SUNDAYS @ CHALK

BY JAMES CUBBY One of Miami’s hottest event promoters, Edison Farrow, known as the godfather of South Beach gay nightlife and for events such as Martini Tuesdays, the Simple Life at Buck 15, and HYPE Fridays, brings us his newest night called Smash Sundays at the newly opened Chalk, a ping pong and billiards lounge. For the Grand Opening of Smash Sundays Edison has double billed the night as a Grammy Viewing Party and a B52s After Party. Wire caught up with Edison to learn more about Smash Sundays. What can we expect from your new weekly party, Smash Sundays at Chalk? Smash Sundays will be like no other event currently happening in Miami. Chalk is a beautiful, chic Ping Pong and Billiards Lounge. So, people will be playing games, drinking, socializing and possibly dancing between the tables! We will have a weekly Happy Hour 9 to 10 p.m. with $4 Rokk Vodka drinks. Will there be themes every week? Yes, we are launching with a Grammys viewing party for the Grand Opening. The Grammys start at 8 p.m. So, there will be complimentary Rokk Vodka from 8 to 9 p.m. Our third week will be Oscar’s night. Will DJ Deejay Smeejay be spinning every week? Yes! Smeejay will be there every Sunday. He will be spinning fun, campy music. He has a great appreciation for music and always pulls out some unexpected fun music. Will pool and ping pong be part of your party? If so, any tournaments planned? Yes, Chalk is a Ping Pong and Billiards Lounge. So, Ping Pong and Pool are a big part of the night. I would love to have tournaments a little down the road. Tell us why you chose Chalk as the new location for your weekly party. I love this venue. They did an outstanding job with the space. I had a Martini Tuesdays at Chalk and everyone loved the night and the venue. What are the special ingredients that Edison Farrow mixes together to make a good party? A special venue is always very important, along with great music and fun people. I always try to invent a party that has never been done before in Miami. What’s the typical crowd at an Edison Farrow party? I have been promoting events for over 11 years. So, I have a huge and varied email list. I get all types of people at my events, but each event winds up finding its own audience. I am also currently hosting Martini Tuesdays and HYPE Fridays at MOVA. Edison Farrow’s Smash Sundays premieres Sunday, February 12 at Chalk (1234 Washington Avenue), located directly across from Mansion Nightclub. 6 | wire magazine | issue #6, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

FAREWELL TO THE FLESH:

YOUR STEELE TRAVEL PRIMER TO CARNIVAL BY DANE STEELE GREEN

Mark your calendars: Carnival is a-comin’. Falling in mid-February, it is technically a holiday-before-a-holy-day, being the herald of Lent, a six-week party-pooping period of fasting and penitence that remembers Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness. Which meant that if you were going to have any fun all at all, best to get it all out on the day before. Presto! Carnival was born. Meaning “to remove meat” in acknowledgement of the bland Lenten diet, Carnival, has since become one of the largest world-parties on the planet, with celebrations held on every continent. Steele’s five top party towns for all you party-boys are: 1) Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The no brainer. An all out bonanza of Latin flesh samba-ing at 180 mph, in 2011, Rio saw its population jump by a solid one million (a 33% increase over 2010) as people from all Brazil and the world came for this most popular of Carnivals. If you haven’t booked your hotel yet, be prepared to pay through the nose - this is South America’s top tourist draw, and is booked months in advance. It doesn’t hurt that Rio is also one of Latin America’s gay-friendliest cities. 2) New Orleans, USA Mardi Gras, Carnival - it’s all the same holiday, and New Orleans revolves around this one day, with krewes duking it out for top honors. Beads, boys, bongs - what more could you ask for? The lower French Quarter is the gay corner of the party. Today, there are eight Gay krewes in New Orleans: Amon Ra, Armeinius, Mwindo, Lords of Leather, People of Substance, Petronius, Queenateenas and Satyricon. A Gay Note: The Night of the Black Mask is held the Friday before Mardi Gras and is the South’s oldest leather block party. 3) Goa, India Okay, we admit it’s not the first country you would think of for what is usually considered a Latin holiday, but the state of Goa, on India’s western coast, existed for over 400 years as a Portuguese colony. Head to the capital of Panaji, where the festival called Intruz rocks on for three solid days as the legendary King Momo rules over the fun. Celebrations, from traditional drumming and local nighttime dancing to full-on parades are held all over the city, but for the best of the best, nothing beats the Red and Black Ball. 4) Barranquilla, Colombia Carnival shuts this town down. Officially an UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, if you’re not a party-monster, boy are you in the wrong place. Colombia’s biggest party fuses the energies of Europe and Africa into a bacchanalia of street dances and musical and masquerade parades. Beginning on the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday with the Battle of the Flowers, the Great Parade on Sunday and Monday is marked by a Caribo-Latin orchestral festival, while things go critical-mass during the Fat Tuesday blow-out, when the legendary king of the party, Joselito Carvajal, is buried (until next year). LOOKING GOOD

BY KEN HUNT

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR LARGEST ORGAN Now that I have your attention...I am talking about your skin. If you’re investing time in a regular workout routine, your body thanks you, but your skin may be paying the price. Here are a few tips for cleansing and caring for your body after the gym. These tips will maximize the benefits of your workout while giving you younger, healthier, and better-looking skin. 1. Rinse your face with cold water. Guys have larger pores than women, so your skin is naturally prone to being oilier. Try a deep-cleansing lotion instead of your usual soap. Use products that are odor-free and contain natural ingredients. 2. Two, four, six, eight - now it’s time to exfoliate! Once a month, include a mild exfoliant between your deep cleanser and your astringent. An exfoliant will gently remove dead skin cells and leave your face smooth and rejuvenated. Be sure to look for products that are formulated to work gently and do not include pieces of nuts or seeds, as these can damage your newly-invigorated skin. 3. If you battle oily skin, an astringent can help control the oils that your skin will continue to excrete for an hour or more after your workout. If your skin is photosensitive use a sunscreen before going outside.

4. Always moisturize after you shower, and use a light moisturizer on your face, paying special attention to the skin around your eyes. And always moisturize while your skin is moist, right after the shower or after you wash your face. Never go to bed alone! Always apply a light layer of your favorite night cream. And don’t forget to use a daytime lotion with a SPF factor. You will want to protect your face from the ravages of ultraviolet rays. 5. Drink adequate amounts of water after your workout. 6. Keep in mind that too much alcohol will dry your skin. Also when you are on a plane, traveling to your next business meeting, make sure to pack your favorite face cream and use it a few times in flight. 7. If you find yourself “faced” with chronic skin issues and problems seek a specialist. It might take some trial and error before you find the right products or combination of products that work best for you. Keep in mind that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a good product. Just because the product is beautifully packaged and sold at your favorite high-end department store doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for your skin. Ken Hunt is an AFI-certified trainer and fitness expert who owns New York and Miami’s Steel Gym. Steel Gym has been named the No. 1 gym in New York two years in a row by the American Fitness Institute. In Miami, Steel Gym is located at 5556 NE 4th Ct. 305.751.7591. www.SteelGym.com

WIRE COVER: THE B-52S CELEBRATE 35 GROOVY YEARS!

BY DJ FR8-O

It’s 1977 in Athens, Georgia and some friends have gathered for a Valentine’s Day like no other. The colors are bright, the outfits are outrageous, Barbie dolls are hanging from the ceiling and there’s more than just love in the air. The room is teeming with electricity as five musicians take to the tiny stage for their concert debut. As the band playfully romps through their set list, the energy in the room explodes with life and laughter and the B-52s are born. The original party rockers are still going strong today and celebrating their 35th anniversary in the only party city in the world – Miami! On February 12, the Adrienne Arsht Center’s John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall will become the grooviest place on the planet as the B-52s rock their party anthems during their one and only South Florida appearance.

outrageous musical style was only matched by their wardrobe which consisted of thrift-store finds and funny wigs. Not long after their concert debut they decided to take their quirky little show on the road. They took weekend road trips to NYC playing gigs at CBGB’s and other live music venues, making a name for themselves among the post-punk underground scene and eventually snagging their first record deal with Warner Brothers by 1979. Their self-titled debut album went Platinum with hits like, “Rock Lobster,” “Planet Claire” and “52 Girls” pulling the band out from underground obscurity and into the pop spotlight. The next four years were spent touring and recording three more albums – Wild Planet (1980), Mesopotamia (1982) and Whammy! (1983). The B-52s had reached international fame and it seemed like nothing could slow them down until tragedy struck. While recording their fifth album, Bouncing off the Satellites, Ricky had been suffering from AIDS/HIV-related health complications but kept it a secret from his fellow band mates. On October 12, 1985 he died at the age of 32. “He really had a vision,” his sister, Cindy remembers, “He was one of the strongest elements of the B-52s from the beginning.” The band was devastated after Ricky’s death and went into seclusion for the next three years. During the hiatus, Keith switched from playing the drums to guitar and began writing music. After playing some of his new music for some of his bandmates, they agreed to start writing and performing together again.

The B-52s decided they were going to make music together, much the same way all great ideas happen – after a few drinks. Having shared a Flaming Volcano at a Chinese restaurant one October night, they started writing songs together and rehearsing them until that infamous Valentine’s Day party. But they still needed a name – one that drummer Keith Strickland pulled from a dream he had of a band performing in a hotel lounge. In the dream someone whispered in his ear that the band’s name was the B-52s. Originally the group consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals, cowbell), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, tambourine, bongos), Ricky Wilson (guitar) and Keith Strickland (drums). Their style was a swirl of dance and surf music set apart by the unusual open tunings done by guitarist Ricky. Fred once described their sound as “a combination of rock- In 1989, the band released their mainstream breakthrough album, Cosmic Thing. n‘-roll, funk, and Fellini, and game show host, and corn, and mysticism.” Their The first single “Channel Z” became an alternative and college radio hit, hitting

number one on the U.S. Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. But nothing compared to the success of their next single, the legendary “Love Shack.” This was the group’s first top 40 hit, reaching #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The success of “Love Shack” was matched just a few months later by their third single “Roam” which also peaked at #3. Cosmic Thing became a multi-platinum selling album reaching #5 in the U.S., #1 in both Australia and New Zealand and #8 in the UK. 1990 was an especially great year for the B-52s who were featured on the cover of Rolling Stone and nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards, ultimately winning for Best Group Video and Best Art Direction for “Love Shack.” Later that year, Cindy took time off from the band to start a family. The rest of the group pushed on as a trio, and with the help of producer Don Was, released their 7th album, Good Stuff in 1992. Although they had been activists and fund-raisers for environmental, AIDS and animal rights causes for many years, this was the band’s first overtly political album. Good Stuff earned its title by reaching #18 in the U.S. Cindy returned to the group in 1998 and they spent the next few years recording new tracks for their “best of” collections, Time Capsule and Nude on the Moon: the B-52s Anthology (2002). In 2008 The B-52s returned to the scene with their first new album in 16 years – Funplex. With its guitar hooks, driving drums and the B-52s’ unmistakable vocal style, Funplex revived the classic B-52s’ sound and gave it a modern twist. The album debuted at #11 on the Billboard charts in the U.S. making it the second-highest charting B-52s’ album ever. There’s no doubt the B-52s are and will always be the original party rockers. Over 20 million albums sold and 35 years strong says it all. If you still don’t know what to

get that special someone for Valentine’s Day, celebrate early and show them some love at the grooviest party in town, February 12 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. My Valentine’s Day came early as I was able to catch up with bandmates, Kate Pierson and Keith Strickland to get the sweet and skinny on their big 35 and what psychedelic surprises await us this Sunday. Congratulations on an amazing 35 years! What do you think it is that’s kept you guys together for so long? Kate: I think it’s because we do dance music for one thing and that always gets people going and gives us energy too. Even though we’ve been doing a lot of the same songs for so long, they’re fun and upbeat and we can lose ourselves in them and be part of the party. We also let ourselves go with the flow in terms of the creative process. Also, really respecting each other after all these years and accepting each other as we are. We also make each other laugh a lot. Tell us about that infamous night on Valentine’s Day in 1977. Kate: We’d never played together before. We just started jamming after a night of drinking Flaming Volcanoes. Then we started writing some songs and Fred told his friends we had this band and we didn’t have a name yet. That first night, we bought these fun fur pocketbooks, turned them inside out and wore them as wigs. It looked very punky. We’d borrowed our friend’s P.A. system for the show and when we started playing, the house actually shook just like in the song “Love Shack:” “The whole shack shimmies.” So we got this reaction that we didn’t expect and everybody was just dancing. It was such an

15 | wire magazine | issue #6, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

“Our shows are always high energy. So get ready to get your go-go on!” unexpected reaction that we knew something was happening. Tell me one thing you love about each of your bandmates. Kate: For Fred it would have to be his wicked sense of humor. Cindy: her emotional depth. Keith: his spiritual quests. He’s always interested in new things and looking deep into the cosmos. Name one of your favorite places that you’ve “Roamed” during your tours, and what did you love about it? Kate: California is really great. We typically get an unusually nutty crowd that’s interesting. And they love to dance. But I’d have to say that Athens, Georgia is my very favorite place because I have so many friends there and it’s where we started. It’s like coming home and seeing where it all started. Oh, and New York (laughing). It’s so hard to pick just one.

WIRE COVER: THE B-52S CELEBRATE 35 GROOVY YEARS! Who are some new artists or bands that you love? Kate: I’ve actually been listening to Lana Del Rey. I really like her new album. Her voice is very beautiful and her lyrics are really great too. I’ve also been having a little festival of my own with Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, Big Audio Dynamite and The Cure. And I love Adele! When you lost one of your band mates, Ricky, from AIDS/HIV-related complications how did that influence or change the band’s direction? Keith: Ricky was so distinctive in his style. He was such an original. We didn’t think that we would continue without him. We didn’t think that we could continue without him. He and I used to write the music together. So I didn’t see how it was possible for us to continue. So I moved to Woodstock and continued writing for the next two years. Then one day I played some of my stuff for the girls and we thought maybe we could continue. But with that decision I made the decision to switch to guitar. Which was interesting because I’d never really played guitar before. I didn’t really think about it. I just felt it was something I should do. So it really changed things. To me it’s like two completely different bands. There was the band with Ricky and then there’s the band after Ricky. What do you have planned for us on February 12 in Miami? Keith: We’re adding some new songs to the set. So they’ll be new to us as well. That always adds a little extra energy to the show when you’re doing something you’ve never done before. It keeps you on your toes. I should say “new old songs” because they’re songs we haven’t performed in a long time and we have to relearn them. Sometimes we even change the arrangement around to suit our mood. I mean sometime when you go back to a song you wanna do it a little differently. But we don’t stray too far from the original. Our shows are always high energy. So get ready to get your go-go on! Which one of you is the biggest romantic of the group? Kate: We’re all pretty romantic. But I think the biggest romantic would have to be Cindy. She and her husband have had this love affair since before the band started. And they’ve hung in there all these years, through kids, and the kids’ band. She still gets dizzy-eyed when she talks about her husband. Do you have any special plans for Valentine’s Day? Kate: We’re actually going to be off on the holiday. I’m going to be home with my girlfriend Monica, so we have to make some really romantic plan. I would love to go to Big Sur or maybe stay at the Madonna Inn which is the place we stayed when we first met. Keith: My partner, Mark, and I live in Key West so I’m not too far from home. We’re not really big on holidays, so maybe something quiet. Maybe hang out with friends.

PHOTO BY PIETER M. VAN HATTEM

Is there anything you would like to add or say to your South Florida fans? Keith: We have an awesome tour band with us. Tracy Wormworth on bass, Sterling Campbell’s our drummer and Paul Gordon’s on keyboards/guitar. They’re just really awesome. We’re sounding better than we ever have! I’m really excited. I love this band and we have some amazing musicians for this show. Kate: Thank you for sticking with us for all these years! We love making you dance. But it feels so good when you guys tell us how our songs got you through high school or a really tough time. So let’s keep the party going! Especially in Miami ‘cause we know you like to party!

This year’s Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, scheduled from February 23-26, has an impressive itinerary of events including the Brunch at Sea hosted by Chef Douglas Rodriguez, known as The Godfather of Nuevo Latino Cuisine, and award-winning Chef Aarón Sanchez, known for his authentic Latin cuisine. Don’t expect a typical brunch as Brunch at Sea will be on the Festival’s Party Boat, The Biscayne Lady and will be a Latin affair. The brunch will combine the vibrant Cuban cuisine of Chef Douglas Rodriguez with the Mexicaninspired style of Food Network star Aarón Sanchez for a swinging salsa affair mixed with brunch-style foods, Diplomatico Rum and Montecristo Cigars. Brunch at Sea is now celebrating its second year, and some 350 guests will enjoy this energetic brunch affair as The Biscayne Lady cruises around Star Island, Palm Island, and Hibiscus Island for about 90 minutes before returning to shore at Bayside Marketplace. Hosts Chef Rodriguez and Chef Sanchez will have the premier station at the front of the ship, serving Latin inspired brunch dishes. Chef Rodriguez, a pioneer in the culinary world, has an impressive track record that includes several award-winning restaurants, best selling cookbooks and numerous television appearances. Chef Rodriguez’s current sensation, De Rodriguez Cuba on Ocean, offers a new twist on classic dishes with an authentic experience. Chef Sanchez, co-star of Food Network’s hit series, Chopped and Heat Seekers, is the culinary visionary behind Tacombi Tacqueria in New York City and Crossroads at House of Blues nationwide as well as being the owner and executive chef of Centrico, located in New York City, and Mestizo, located in Kansas City. Chef Sanchez is one of the country’s leading contemporary Latin Chefs. Joining Chefs Rodriguez and Sanchez will be Guest Chefs Timon Balloo and Pichet Ong, who will have stations on the ship with Pichet located on the upper level serving up desserts. As Executive Chef of Sugarcane raw bar grill in mid-town Miami, Balloo brings his experience to the table earning him a collection of favorable reviews including three stars by The Miami Herald. Chef Pichet Ong is known for “mixing classical and modern flavors to create “whimsical sweet and savory foods at his iconic restaurants (P*ONG, Village Tart), dessert bar (The Spot, Bubble Lounge) and bakery (Batch).” The Festival’s Party Boat will not only be filled with great food but also live music from a salsa band located on the top deck and a group of professional salsa dancers. For cigar aficionados, there will be a cigar station offering up smokes from Montecristo. Diplomatico Rum will be just one of the specialties served at one of the four bars on the ship. Dress for the Sunday cruise is casual cruise-type wear and it’s recommended that women not wear high heels, as the steps on the ship are steep. Brunch at Sea sets sail Sunday, February 26 at 11 a.m. at Bayside Marketplace (401 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami) and returns to dock at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for this exciting culinary adventure. OSCAR SEASON LIGHTS UP INDIE SCREENS

WIRED ON THE ARTS

FEBRUARY 9 − 15 CONCERTS

Pianist Garrick Ohlsson plays with the Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra for an evening of music on February 10 at the Arsht Center. Raised in Miami, four-time Tony Award nominee Raul Esparza brings his musical talents to the stage of the Arsht Center on February 11 at 8 p.m.

Melodies and Memories - At Last celebrates the music of Harry Warren, who wrote memorable songs like “Lullaby of Broadway” and “42nd Street,” at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center thru February 12. I Love a Piano, celebrating the music of Irving Berlin, continues at Miami Beach Stage Door Theatre thru February 12. Next to Normal, the controversial Broadway hit, comes to the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre thru February 12. Free Shakespeare in the Park presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream at The Shell Lumber Stage thru February 29.

Oscar Night is February 26, and as invitations to Oscar parties flood your inbox you might be thinking it’s a good time to brush up your Oscar smarts by seeing a couple of nominated flicks. While several nominees are available on DVD, on cable or online, there’s still time to catch an Oscar contender on a big local screen. If you’re going to an Oscar party in drag, The Iron Lady is a must-see. In fact, if you normally wouldn’t even consider going to an Oscar party, or any party, in drag, seeing The Iron Lady might change your mind. The film’s camp glamour burgeons as its subject, first female British PM Margaret Thatcher (Oscar nominee Meryl Streep), grows more powerful; its last third plays a bit like an extravagantly budgeted episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race with the theme “Thatcher: The Heroine with a Handbag!” Albert Nobbs is quite the antithesis of campy fun, even though it features two women passing as men in Victorian Dublin. This story of a tiny, stunted, pitiable life is told with richness of spirit and depth of character; the acting is something to savor. Glenn Close in the title role and Janet McTeer are both nominated, as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Albert Nobbs is not a happy movie; it’s a beautiful movie. The Artist is mute but expressive, a silent movie with a big heart, a bravura musical score and ten Academy Award nominations. Only Martin Scorcese’s Hugo has more nominations – it goes all the way to eleven – and like The Artist, Hugo is caught up in the magic of movies when movies were new. Check the listings to see where these Academy Award nominees – and others, including War Horse, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and the widely acclaimed A Separation, a Best Foreign Language Film nominee – are playing on local screens. If you’ve caught up with all the feature-length nominees the pleasures of Oscarnominated short films, animated and live action, await at three local indies. The ten nominated short films will screen at the Bill Cosford Cinema from February 10 – 19 and at the Miami Beach Cinematheque from February 10 – 22. In Fort Lauderdale, Cinema Paradiso will screen both sets of films this weekend. At least two Oscar nominees haven’t opened in South Florida yet: Pina, nominated for Best Documentary Feature; and Chico and Rita, nominated for Best Animated Feature. Both are coming soon to the Coral Gables Art Cinema: Pina on February 17 and Chico and Rita in March. 22 | wire magazine | issue #6, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter

Miami Symphony Orchestra presents A Valentine Extravaganza, a program of romantic favorites at the New World Center on February 12. The B-52s, known as “The World’s Greatest Party Band,” brings their 35th Anniversary Tour to Miami with a stop at the Arsht Center on February 12 at 8 p.m.
