PUBLISHER'S CORNER A NEW YEAR FULL OF OPPORTUNITIES Every year brings new sunrises and new opportunities. It is up to each one of us to embrace those opportunities and make the most of what life has to offer. Yes, there will also be challenges ahead, but that is part of life. We must face our challenges head on and do our best to overcome whatever roadblocks come our way during 2018. I, for one, plan to continue working hard as owner, publisher and editor in chief of Wire Magazine and as chief operating officer of Q Link Wireless because we have plans to bring great new things to our readers, advertisers and customers in both companies in the coming year. I also want to do my best to ensure that both companies continue to succeed and grow for the benefit of all stakeholders. Work is very important to me, but I also plan to take more time for myself and enjoy a couple of nice vacations during this new year – something I did not do last year because I focused too much on my jobs and not enough on myself and my overall quality of life. As we start 2018, I encourage everyone to make time for yourself in the new year, and remember that you, your family and friends should also be a top priority. Switching gear to this week's issue, we start 2018 with a very sexy photo essay of hot Latin men through the lens of Brazilian photographer Gastohn Barrios. He believes that while it is true that we have made a lot of progress on the issue of homophobia, until the day comes when there are no categorizations that divide us, there will still be a lot to be done. Gastohn also shared with Wire Magazine that "I could say that my main objective is for anyone to see my work and take it as something natural, something human, without labels or categorizations." So enjoy his beautiful work in this week's cover story. If you are planning to take a vacation, consider one of my favorite places in the U.S. – Savannah, Georgia. In Destinations, Michael W. Sasser points out that "The Hostess City of the South" is an intriguing and welcoming Southern getaway. "Long the home of Southern progressivism, today Savannah is characterized by one of the better-preserved historic districts, rich in architecture and history, as well as being a center for the arts and, in most recent years, a culinary playground celebrating all things great about American cuisine," explains Michael. Finally, in Top Trax, music writer DJ FR8-O looks at some of the fresh new music talent ready to smash through that final wall and become the next big thing in 2018. You may have heard about some of these artists, others will be new to you, but expect to hear a lot more about them in the coming year.

DESTINATIONS

Savannah By Michael W. Sasser

Long the home of Southern progressivism, today Savannah is characterized by one of the better-preserved historic districts, rich in architecture and history, as well as being a center for the arts and, in most recent years, a culinary playground celebrating all things great about American cuisine. The panoramic exploration of Savannah's old world decadence in John Berendt's book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil might have introduced many media consumers to the particular oddities and charms of the city, as well as its natural beauty, but even the biggest fans of the book (and subsequent movie) would have to admit that Savannah has become more sophisticated, more modern and notably more gay friendly in the past decade. Much of Savannah's charms extend from its parks and other open spaces. All public life in the city revolves around the gorgeous 30-acre Forsyth Park. The park's great fountain is one of Savannah's most recognizable landmarks, and is the perfect spot to snap a photo. On more temperate Saturday mornings, the park really comes to life with a farmer's market of noted quality. Numerous other parks and open spaces, ranging from suburban greenery to the nearby popular waterfront, encourage visitors to appreciate the distinct outdoors of this, the oldest city and first capital of Georgia.

THE HOSTESS CITY OF THE SOUTH

PHOTO PROVIDED BY VISITSAVANNAH.COM

t's been said that a great host or hostess can make any party into a memorable occasion, so it is no surprise that Savannah, GA – "The Hostess City of the South" – is such an intriguing and welcoming Southern getaway.

PHOTOS LICENSED BY INGRAM IMAGE

Savannah's waterfront, eclectic shopping, historic sites and a wealth of ghost stories can occupy a good portion of one's days in the great city. By night, Southern hospitality and one of the most exciting culinary scenes in the U.S. take over as the attention-getters. Parker's Market Urban Gourmet, known as "Fancy Parker's" to the locals, stocks everything from imported cheeses to gourmet desserts and hot meals to go. You'll also find fresh cut flowers, late-night hot breakfast items, Savannah-made gifts, craft beer and basic necessities like bottled water, coffee and snacks. Circa 1875 might be one of the – if not the most – respected fine dining site in the city, but regional cuisine is what has driven the advent of Savannah dining in recent years. Joe's Homemade Cafe, Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room and Olde Pink House Restaurant are all well worth exploring, but consider this tip: do some in-country research upon your arrival in Savannah about what the hot spots du jour are. One of the exciting aspects of dining Savannah is its constant and quick evolution. Trust that it is hard to go wrong. Savannah's location ensures that the best influences of the Atlantic Coast, of the South and of numerous ethnicities combine for a distinct and coveted cuisine. Accommodations offer vantage points in either the more modern or more historic parts of the city and many can be good bases of operations for your Savannah adventures. Downtown offers the handsome Hamilton-Turner Inn, the Mansion on Forsyth Park, Autograph Collection, and numerous very affordable options. If you want to stay in the historic district, The Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront, Autograph Collection intrigues, and the Eliza Thompson House Savannah is well regarded, but the distances to travel are short enough that most accommodations are in range of attractions.

Besides the scenery, other attractions you won't want to miss include the SCAD Museum of Art, Tybee Island, Savannah's laid-back beach community, Davenport House Museum, and constantly evolving theater and visual arts programs and venues. While not as large or modern as Atlanta, Savannah has welcomed LGBTQ visitors as part of its evolution. True to the 21st century, venues are welcoming to all, as opposed to setting visitors apart into groups. A vibrant Savannah Pride takes place in October and attracts visitors from all over the region to enjoy a celebration with a distinct Southern taste – and a distinct welcoming environment. After all, Savannah is The Hostess City of the South... Michael W. Sasser has been a travel writer for more than 20 years, for publishers ranging from Time Out and Frommer's to Miami Herald Custom Publishing and ABARTA Media. He is author of thousands of travel stories and dozens of travel books. Reach him at mikewsasser@yahoo.com.

What is TRUVADA for PrEP?

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: ® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. ® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. ® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must continue to use safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. ® You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. ® If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. ® To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: ® Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. ® Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. ® Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. ® Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. ® If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: ® Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: ® Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA. ® Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. ® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. ® Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? ® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. ® If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA. ® If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. ® All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. ® If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT: Sexy Latin Men Through The Lens of

GASTOHN BARRIOS By Rafa Carvajal Photos by Gastohn Barrios. gastohn.com

14 WIREMAG.COM #01 2018

astohn Barrios reached out to Wire Magazine through Facebook and asked if we would be willing to publish some of his models in our publication. Upon seeing Gastohn's very steamy photographs of sexy Latin men, I decided instead to interview Gastohn, learn more about his work and publish a photo essay with a selection of his very hot models. Rafa Carvajal: What initially drew you to male model photography, and how did you become a professional photographer? Gastohn Barrios: It was 2006. I was a model then, living in Brazil, where I began taking pictures of some friends that were starting their modeling careers and could not pay for a photographer. I remember thinking, "How bad could it be? Let's try it!" It began as a hobby and trying to give a hand to some friends with a borrowed regular camera. People liked the pictures, and so did I. So, almost without noticing it, I became a photographer. My professional career started when I bought my first professional camera and received my first payment, ha-ha. Anyway, when I look back to those pictures, I can see how many things I had to learn. It is a process I think, as life itself – you learn along the way.

I know that most of my nude and clothed portraits are of men, even though I have done female photography too. The fact is that most of it is of male models. At the beginning, it was not planned, but it was easier to work with men. Maybe because I had more contact with male models and because a woman is more careful about being nude in front of a man that is not familiar to her. I really don't know, but the fact is I realized I was known as a nude male model photographer. Today, I have some kind of commitment with the public to follow my work and keep doing it. I know that because when I posted a hunky, sensual model on my Instagram, I got 2,000 likes. When I posted a female one, I got just 200 likes, ha-ha. So, I am aware that even if I like to photograph other things, or do more fashion shoots, producers and people want to see the sensual male portraits. I really enjoy doing it. I think the human body is the most perfect, beautiful thing in creation. So, I like to capture its shape, curves and texture. Nudity is kind of a rebellious thing too. All of my scholarship was in catholic schools, where our own body and sexuality was kind of forbidden and sinful. So, I think that doing this is a kind of shout-out saying, "I have my own thoughts and I will do whatever I want to do." I really believe that sex and sensuality are everywhere. So, I decided to show it in a perfect body as a part of my art, even after being aware that I receive a lot of criticism for it. But this is my art, creation and expression. Like all kinds of art, there are people who like it and people who don't, and it is great that way. I really admire and celebrate portraits of other types of bodies. I really love it, but if everyone did the same work, art would be very boring. RC: What do you see as your "breakthrough moment"? GB: I think that one important mark in my career was when I won the Annual Photography Contest organized by Next Magazine in New York back in 2014. The way it happened was so fast, so unexpected. I remember the editor of the magazine wrote me, inviting me to participate in the contest. I never even thought that I could do so, but his words were so kind. He said that he loved my pictures and that he thought I might be part of the contest. I sent a couple of pictures without expecting anything, and then I received a notification saying that one of my pictures was within the ten finalists. One week later, I won. Suddenly without thinking it, my work was exhibited at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York – a dream that I never thought would become a reality. That changed the way I saw my work.

#01 2018 WIREMAG.COM 15

RC: Where do you get your inspiration? GB: I think that I am inspired by a mixture of things. Firstly, I really admire Ancient Greek art, which used perfect human bodies in sculptures and drawings. Also, Renaissance artists like Michelangelo. It may sound pretentious, but I simply love them. Secondly, there are so many photographers and artists that I admire very much; such as Erwin Olaf and Steven Klein. I also like Terry Richardson, David LaChapelle, Herb Ritts, Mario Testino, David Vance, Klaus Gerhart‌ oh, so many. Thirdly, and maybe most importantly, is my life. Photographer Ansel Adams said, "You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved." I think that all my travels, experiences and artists that have touched my life at some point (e.g. Madonna, Alfonsina Storni, Frida Kahlo) are the true inspiration for my work and, of course, the reality that I live everyday. RC: How do you find your male models? GB: Thankfully, I get a lot of proposals to shoot models, so I can choose between all of them. Also, if I find somebody in social media that I like, I can write to them and start the process I just mentioned, ha-ha. RC: What have you learned through photographing people? GB: I think the most important thing to learn photographing people is to enjoy the moment that you are shooting. To have fun and make that person feel like they are your best friend in that moment, and the result will be the best for sure. RC: Describe your work in 3 words. GB: Sensuality, rebellion and myself. RC: What has been your favorite photo shoot and why? GB: I believe my favorite photo shoot is one called "Terra & Mare" I did outside Mar del Plata, Argentina with my boyfriend who is a ballet dancer. We were spending Valentine's Day at the top of some cliffs, when the sun began to set. We then decided to walk on the beach, close to the ocean. What we found was so beautiful that I asked him, "I have my camera in the car, don't you want to do some naked ballet poses in this amazing place?" He said, "Naked? Ha-ha." We were completely alone there, so we did it and it was pure magic. The sunset, the landscape, his body‌ my favorite shoot ever.

"I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT YOU SHOULD NOT HESITATE TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS, NO MATTER HOW CRAZY THEY SEEM. IF YOU WORK FOR IT, YOU WILL ACHIEVE IT." - GASTOHN BARRIOS

As a single photograph, the one I like most is one called "Fallen Angel" – the one that won the photography contest. The picture symbolizes the discrimination faced by the transgender community, genderfluid individuals and drag queens in our society. The naked and lifeless body symbolizes how deadly social condemnation can often be for a person. Also, it is a body without a particular gender. On the pavement, you can see a pair of red high-heels, symbolizing their struggle and dreams becoming a reality; and finally we can see a wing drawn on the street, which shows the main character as a martyr, a divine creature (as we all are), and at the same time it represents the purity of all human beings, regardless of their sexual orientation. RC: What type of camera and lenses do you use? GB: I have always worked with Nikon cameras and their lenses. It depends on a lot of things, but my favorite is the 18-140mm, which is the one I use the most. RC: How has social media played a role in your photography? GB: Oh, social media is everything to me. It is the way to show my work to the world, and it is amazing because people contact me from all over the world. It is incredible. RC: What surprises you the most when you look back at your work? GB: Time. It is amazing how fast time goes by. It seems like just yesterday I was a model in Brazil, starting to play with a borrowed camera. Now, I can't believe that I have achieved so many things, that so many people are following my work on social media, and that there are brands trusting in my vision for their products.

"AS A GAY MAN, MY COMMITMENT TO LGBTQ RIGHTS IS COMPLETE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME I FEEL THE NEED TO EXPRESS MYSELF AS AN INDIVIDUAL. THE TOOL I HAVE TO EXPRESS MYSELF IS THE IMAGE, THE PHOTOGRAPH AND THROUGH IT I TRY TO SAY WHAT I WANT TO SAY." - GASTOHN BARRIOS

18 WIREMAG.COM #01 2018

RC: What is your current struggle? GB: I think that at this moment it could be not letting people put me in a certain box. A few days ago, a Mexican magazine asked me what I wanted to show to gay people with my photography, but I don't want to be put in that box. As a gay man, my commitment to LGBTQ rights is complete, but at the same time I feel the need to express myself as an individual. The tool I have to express myself is the image, the photograph, and through it I try to say what I want to say. Although, I have used my work many times as a graphic tool to show or denounce specific things through art. Like the photograph "Fallen Angel" that I mentioned before, or another one that represented the oppression towards gays in Russia. But in fact, my primary goal would be for my photographs to be taken naturally, embracing what is shown as something human and not just as a gay thing, because that label continues to divide us and what we need is to be united. Nowadays, there are models who are afraid of being photographed "sensually" because they fear that someone could think they are gay. In some way they project their own insecurities, just like our society does. Through my photos, I expose my soul, all the experiences of my life and all those images have a lot of me. That's why it bothers me a lot when some image is cataloged as "gay" or "too gay," because it shows the enormous homophobia that still exists everywhere. While it is true that we have made a lot of progress on this issue, I believe that until the day comes when there are no categorizations that divide us, there will still be a lot to be done. So to summarize, I could say that my main objective is for anyone to see my work and take it as something natural, something human, without labels or categorizations. RC: Where can our readers learn more about you and follow your work? GB: You can find my work on gastohn.com, on Instagram @gastohnphotographer, or just by searching my name on Google, you will find all my other social media accounts. RC: What else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers? GB: I'd like to say that you should not hesitate to follow your dreams, no matter how crazy they seem. If you work for it, you will achieve it. Visit www.wiremag.com to read the extended version of this interview.

THE ONES TO BE SEEN IN

2018

20 WIREMAG.COM #01 2018

CALUM SCOTT If you haven't heard this beautiful Brit's haunting cover of Robyn's "Dancin On My Own" yet, stop reading this right now, watch it, then come back. Pretty amazing right? So amazing, that it claimed the No. 1 spot on the UK charts in 2016, becoming Britain's best-selling single by an English solo artist that year (sorry Sam). The Britain's Got Talent finalist has been unstoppable since then, with two more singles – "Rhythm Inside" and "Not Dark Yet" – leading up to his debut album Only Human expected to drop in March. Start practicing your swoons, boys! DUA LIPA First she broke some rules, then she gave us new ones. This 22-year-old English singer-songwriter seemed to have come out of nowhere, but she's actually been dropping dance hits across the pond since 2015. Her self-titled debut album spawned the addictive club anthem "New Rules" last summer, securing her popstar status here in the U.S. If that colossal breakout track is any indication of where she's headed, 2018 could be the year that Dua gets to make all the rules.

o long 2017! It's been real, but with a fresh new year comes fresh new talent just waiting for a chance to make us dance, love and cry, and keep playing them on repeat.. So many artists have been slowly emerging from obscurity over the last few months, ready to smash through that final wall and be the next big thing. Since I can't fit all of them into my modest little column, here are my top favorites. Some you've probably heard of, some you probably haven't (yet), but all of them are about to make 2018 their bitch.

2018 2018

HEY VIOLET Move over P!nk. A new hue is about to dominate our playlists. In 2017, this L.A.-based quintet was named one of Billboard's breakout bands of the year. Originally formed as Cherri Bomb in 2008, they now have a new lead and a fresh new sound. Their sophomore LP From the Outside smashes together the best shades of pop, rock and synth so brilliantly that it's a must-have for anyone who likes their music with a splash of color.

KIM PETRAS The 80's flaunted sexual fluidity with artists like Boy George and Alison Moyet, the '90s gave drag queens a voice thanks to RuPaul, and 2017 opened the doors for openly gay artists to be themselves and still slay the charts. Now Kim Petras is about to conquer the next big controversy by giving the transgender community their first pop icon. Born Tim Petras, at age 16 Kim was the youngest person to completely transition. Since then she's been changing the music scene, most recently with her precocious anthem "I Don't Want It At All," which has clocked over 1.3 million views on YouTube. With that many fans rooting for her – including Paris Hilton – 2018 could be the year that Kim does get it all. MIC LOWRY We want to hate them so badly, but every time one splits up, three more come back in its place. But these guys aren't your basic boy band. They've been steadily making the rounds in their home country of England and are about to make some ripples over on our side of the pond. Give a listen to their summer anthem "Whiskey Kisses," or their new single "Don't Tempt Me" and you'll understand why. Now that there's a big hole left where One Direction used to be, this could be the perfect time for the MiC to drop. SIGRID Proving once again that Scandinavia has more to offer us than IKEA and Alexander Skarsgård, this Norwegian synthpop singer broke onto the scene last year with her addictive earworm "Don't Kill My Vibe" and slayed it. While it wasn't enough to make her a household name (yet), it did get her into the Justice League Original Motion Picture Soundtrack doing a cover of Leonard Cohen's 1988 classic "Everybody Knows." With a debut album in the works for 2018, it won't be long before her name is one that everybody does know.
