PUBLISHER'S CORNER AN HOMAGE TO TÍO CHALO AND HIS LOVE OF CINEMA I grew up loving cinema thanks to the influence of my uncle Gonzalo Raventós, a.k.a. tío Chalo, who ran the Cine Rex cinema in downtown San José, Costa Rica. I saw many films in what I remember as a huge movie theater with two floors and a gigantic screen. I have wonderful memories of my childhood going to Cine Rex and enjoying candy, popcorn and sodas out of a vending machine that dispensed Coca Colas in little glass bottles. These are some of the great memories of my childhood that shaped me for the rest of my life… Tío Chalo knows the business of classic Hollywood cinema very well, and he taught me a lot about it growing up. When my dad was very sick in the hospital, my little brother and I lived with tío Chalo and tía Cavita – my aunt, godmother and my dad's only sister – for a few months. That was a sad time because my dad was very ill and passed away when I was 12 years old, but it was also a time I remember fondly because I watched many a classic film with tío Chalo and my cousins, and intently heard his stories about some of the most famous Hollywood movie stars. I learned about Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Laurence Olivier, Katharine Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Esther Williams, Shirley Temple, and countless other greats of the silver screen thanks to tío Chalo. In the 1930s, tío Chalo grew up on the second floor of the famous Teatro Raventós in downtown San José, owned by his dad. As a little boy, he was madly in love with movie star Shirley Temple, as he explained during a 2014 interview in La Nación, Costa Rica's leading newspaper. Those were the days of his early childhood and the grand cinema halls, when Shirley Temple films on the silver screen would fill up all 2,200 seats of the huge Teatro Raventós movie theater. Tío Chalo´s love of cinema became his life and career for many years and his influence led to my own love of films and cinema. Thanks to tío Chalo, when I purchased Wire Magazine I decided to become an ardent supporter and sponsor of the Miami Film Festival and the OUTshine Film Festival, and to publish an annual Sundance Film Festival special issue. Movies today are, in many cases, very different from the Hollywood films of yesteryear, but the Sundance Film Festival continues to recognize the importance of filmmaking and the work of independent, bold filmmakers whose storytelling can actually change the way many of us view our world. THE GREAT GATHERING SPACE
here's little wonder that Oahu has been known as "The Gathering Place" for longer than even locals remember. The third largest, but today most populated, Hawaiian island is a crossroads for the immense Pacific, a multicultural breeding ground, a way station for everyone from early Asian/Pacific Islanders to Capt. James Cook on his third Pacific expedition, to the U.S. forces housed there in World War II when Pearl Harbor became the focal point of the global conflict.
Oahu is primarily defined by the state capital of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, and the famous beach known as Waikiki. Understand that most attractions and accommodations are packed into these fairly small areas, which means they are prone to crowds, and some sing the praises of more remote parts of Hawaii. But there is a reason that 60-plus percent of visitors end up here: pretty much everything Hawaii has to offer is right here, in easy reach.

When you consider the ideal climate, multitude of diverse attractions and gay friendly culture, the gorgeous reality of Oahu comes even further into focus.

So, what's to offer? It really starts for most with Waikiki, which is home to some of the most photographed beaches in the world. You would have a hard time not wandering upon a famous beach, with the most famous gay beach being Queen's Surf Beach in the heart of Waikiki. There are also plenty of "mixed" beaches, but enjoying the waterfront isn't exclusive to beach-bumming. Within easy reach is the vaunted surfing on the North Shore. Also in the vicinity are other ubiquitous Oahu standards such as twilight catamaran trips (some specifically gay), a famed luau and every water sport (ahem) imaginable. Gay specific amenities abound, despite the comfortable mixed nature of most on the island. From Hula's Bar and Lei Stand (yes, yes) at Waikiki Grand Hotel to Bar 35 on the nightlife front to Brasserie Du Vin, the island's most romantic restaurant, to gay-friendly accommodations at Hotel Renew (they have a nice LGBTQ honeymoon package), the gorgeous Coconut Waikiki Hotel and others, gay and straight go hand in hand here.

In the vicinity of Waikiki and Honolulu, there are more than a half-dozen gay bars and clubs, but it is important to note that the press of flesh in the vicinity is so intense that nudity and cruising are discouraged. When so many people of all stripes are stripped down, it's important to retain a little self-control. Oahu's appeal extends into every area. Here is the nexus of Hawaiian arts and culture to eclectic shopping to history. The Aloha Tower sits at Pier 9 of Honolulu Harbor, where it continues to welcome mariners to America's most beautiful state. 1889, it is the largest museum in Hawaii and has the world's largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts and natural history specimens. Of course, no historic site in this or any other state can really compare to Pearl Harbor. Long a significant U.S. military site, the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941, was the immediate cause of the United States' entry into World War II. Today it is a chilling, awe-inspiring site attracting throngs of visitors, at once deeply touching and optimistic at the same time – with Japan being one of the United States' strongest and most beloved allied nations. What more could one ask from a single destination than an incomparable environment, history, arts and culture – and a distinct culture welcoming people of all orientation. he 2018 Sundance Film Festival is right around the corner. If you love independent films, you may want to attend this year's festival or watch some of the Festival's films when they become available. The Sundance Institute will showcase bold, independent storytelling at this year's Film Festival, and screenings will be held in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort January 18-28.

This year, the Festival will screen 110 independent films from 29 countries and include 47 first-time filmmakers. The films for 2018 were selected from 13,468 submissions – 3,901 feature-length films and 8,740 short films. Of the feature films submitted, 1,799 were from the U.S. and 2,102 were international. Also, 100 feature films at the 2018 Festival will be world premieres. In this week's cover story we spotlight a selection of 15 films to give you a preview of some of the cinematic works that will be screening at Sundance. The Sundance Film Festival is the crown jewel of the Sundance Institute's diverse public programs, which also include festivals in London, Hong Kong and other film screenings throughout the year. The Institute supports independent filmmakers and artists with year-round programs, grants over $2.5 million in funding and convenes 25 global residency labs that focus on theatre, film, New Frontier and episodic content. Robert Redford, president and founder of the Sundance Institute, highlights the importance of supporting the work of independent filmmakers, by explaining that "The work of independent storytellers can challenge and possibly change culture, illuminating our world's imperfections and possibilities. This year's Festival is full of artfully-told stories that provoke thought, drive empathy and allow the audience to connect, in deeply personal ways, to the universal human experience." We highlighted some of these stories in the films and documentaries we spotlighted for you.
