CELEBRATES IN "CARNAVAL" STYLE
Going back a couple of decades, the first festivals were actually protests and, according to Pride Fort Lauderdale president Miik Martorell, "As the LGBTQ+ community prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Pride Fort Lauderdale is reminded of the progress we have made. Greater Fort Lauderdale is now one of the most diverse and welcoming communities in the nation and our 2019 'Carnaval' festival is a tribute to our city, county, and all residents."

Wire Magazine sat down with Pride Fort Lauderdale president Miik Martorell to learn more about the 2019 Pride Fort Lauderdale festival. Michael Bustamante: How does it feel to be leading the 42nd annual Pride Fort Lauderdale? Miik Martorell: Pride Fort Lauderdale is the oldest Pride in the state of Florida and I'm really proud to be continuing a long tradition. Many people don't realize that Pride South Florida – and now Pride Fort Lauderdale – arose out of protests in 1977. Miami-Dade County passed a landmark gay rights ordinance that was overturned by a referendum spearheaded by evangelical activist and entertainer Anita Bryant.
MB: Tell our readers about the entertainment lineup. MM: Where do I start? On Thursday, we're featuring RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars Naomi Smalls and Carson Kressley at the Pride Runway Fashion Show at the Hard Rock, along with Alan T and some surprises. On Saturday, the South Beach Wine and Food Festival drag brunch will bring national ra10 WIREMAG.COM #04 2019
dio host Elvis Duran to Fort Lauderdale. On Sunday, at the festival, we'll have Todrick Hall, Ada Vox from American Idol and DJs Sushiman and Kidd Madonna on the main stage. MB: Tell us about the free shuttle service being offered this year. MM: We know traffic is going to be heavy and parking pretty much nonexistent. We're again offering free shuttles from Hagen Park in Wilton Manors on Saturday for the parade and Sunday for the festival. Wilton Manors has waived parking fees after 6 p.m. Free parking is also available at the Galleria Mall and we're encouraging everyone to take express Water Taxi service to the beach. Water Taxi is offering a special $10 rate for everyone riding to Pride. Yellow Cab will even take you doorto-door from your home to the festival entrance. MB: What makes Pride Fort Lauderdale different from all other Pride celebrations? MM: We're not the only Pride festival on a beach, but we think we have a fantastic location. Where else can you enjoy a parade or dance the afternoon away while enjoying the views of the ocean as far as the eye can see. MB: What do you hope participants take away from their Pride experience this year? MM: Our theme is "Carnaval," reflecting the culture and influence of the Caribbean and Latin America in South Florida. We hope all can appreciate and enjoy the diversity within our community and come together, especially as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Visit wiremag.com to read the extended version of this article.

MB: What's the 'headline' for Pride Fort Lauderdale this year? MM: We're having a parade! Not only are we holding our first Pride parade in recent years, it's also the very first parade of any kind ever held on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Believe it or not, it's taken a year of planning and collaboration with the city to make the parade happen at all. We're especially proud to have two heroes leading that parade in a year when we mark the 50th anniversary of Stonewall: Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, an eyewitness to the police raid at the Stonewall Inn that sparked riots and led to the birth of the modern gay rights movement, and Mayor Dean Trantalis, who last year made history as our city's first openly gay mayor.

MB: What does Pride mean to you? MM: Over the past three years, I've attended and volunteered at more than 50 Pride festivals around the world. It's so exciting to see each and every community gather and celebrate in their own unique ways. We've taken the best ideas from those Pride festivals and brought them back in an effort to make Pride Fort Lauderdale an unforgettable weekend for the LGBTQ community, an occasion where everyone can feel safe and welcomed, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Colombia, Canada, France, China, Italy, U.S., Monaco, 2018 Director: Don Millar
Colombia, Mexico, 2018 Director: Julio Hernández Cordón Cast: Matilde Hernández Guinea, Rogelio Sosa, Sostenes Rojas, Wallace Pereyda, Ángel Leonel Corral, Ángel Rafael Yanez, Mariano Sosa, Jhoan Martínez
Spain, 2018 Director: Enrique Urbizu Cast: José Coronado, Isak Férriz, Daniel Grao, Carlos Librado
Festival Summary: His style is instantly recognizable, his art greatly sought after, and his vision admired all over the world: Colombian legend Fernando Botero is, without a doubt, one of the greatest living artists today. An intensely avid learner and private person, he has never made much mention of his start in provincial Medellín and how he educated himself traveling through Europe – a past that allowed him to pave his way to eventually become El Maestro. In Botero, director Don Millar offers a poetic chronicle of the painter's life and art. Shot in 10 different cities all over the world, the film digs deep into Botero's roots to follow his ascent to the pinnacle of the art world, where he has secured himself a permanent position.

Festival Summary: A retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn that plays both with gender and the notion of adventure tales, Buy Me a Gun is set in the near-future of Mexico where women are disappearing and children are being abducted with frightening impunity. A young girl named Huck wears a mask to hide her gender as she helps her dad, a tormented addict, take care of an abandoned baseball camp in service to a gang of narcos who use it for recreational purposes. With the help of her friends, a group of lost boys who have the power of camouflaging themselves in the windy desert, Huck has to fight to overcome her reality and to defeat the local capo. All given a hallucinatory texture by director Julio Hernández Cordón's famously stunning visual inventiveness, Buy Me a Gun creates a dark world where fear rules and violence is routine.
Festival Summary: Miami Film Festival is proud to present the first two episodes of one of the biggest hits of 2018's TV fall lineup in Spain. With a total of six episodes, Gigantes is a restless, bold, fast-paced tale of brotherhood and rivalry, where alliances are broken as quickly as they are made, and blood loss and violence reign supreme. In this world, the three brothers will have to learn to stand united against their rivals and the police, or they will risk losing the empire their ruthless father built, the only thing they have ever called home.

But Anne – played by radiant French pop superstar Vanessa Paradis – isn't aware of this yet. Instead, she is sulking over her breakup with Loïs, her lover and the editor of the third-rate gay porn Anne produces. The boozy evening carries on and on, with the actual award seeming like an afterthought to the assembled aging eccentrics hanging on to the dying lights of the Golden Age of the Italian film industry. But when one of the venerable old movie producers turns up murdered at the end of the evening, the police turn to the young upstart screenwriters as their prime suspects. As they are questioned over the course of the night, each writer elaborates on their own fantastical version of what happened on that fateful night.
