PUBLISHER'S CORNER SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY EVENTS The great thing about living in Miami is that there is a plethora of events and parties happening on a regular basis. I am a big believer of supporting community events. Therefore, I have made it a point to sponsor as many community events as possible with Wire Magazine. This week, I want to encourage everyone who would like us to consider their event for possible sponsorship to contact me. Wire Magazine sponsorships include a variety of marketing and promotional benefits, such as event advertising and value added editorial support in print, digital issue and online, social media postings, inclusion in our email newsletter to our digital issue subscribers, and online advertising. Wire Magazine sponsored Pride Fort Lauderdale, which took place this past weekend. This quarter, we are also sponsoring Winter Party Festival, Miami Film Festival, Miami Beach Gay Pride and OUTshine Film Festival. Each one of these events will include our annual special issue previewing it for our readers. Besides sponsoring events in South Florida, Wire Magazine also sponsors other events in the U.S. and internationally. So feel free to contact me about your event for sponsorship consideration. Many of our community events need the help of dedicated volunteers, so I want to let you know that Miami Beach Gay Pride is seeking volunteers for this year's 10th anniversary Pride event. A recruitment party will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018, 7-9:30 p.m. at The Hub at the LGBT Visitor Center (1130 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach). Attend the party to learn how you can volunteer beginning now and throughout Pride Week. Complimentary beverages and light bites will be served, plus you will be able to sign up for a chance to win two tickets to the upcoming Erasure concert at The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason. RSVP to volunteer@miamibeachgaypride.com if you would like to attend. This week, we bring you a cover story product of one of my recent life experiences. Philippe Bélanger, a stunningly beautiful Cirque du Soleil performer and athlete, stood out from a cast of gorgeous male performers with perfect bodies when I went to see the Cirque du Soleil show VOLTA. I loved VOLTA, so I returned to see it for a second time and invited famed photographer David Vance, and his husband Kyle. During the show's intermission, David asked me if I thought it would be possible to reach out to the beautiful model riding the unicycle so he could do a photoshoot of him. I did! And it led to the interview of Phillippe and his great photos by David Vance in this issue of Wire Magazine. Also in this issue, I sat down with Alex Guerra to preview the Hôtel Gaythering's 4th Anniversary '80s party, and look back on the last four years. Check it out!

ATLANTA SOUTHERN NIGHTS
nion General William T. Sherman probably wouldn't recognize it any more than history books do, but when he had his troops burn Atlanta to the ground during the Civil War, he might have garnered some street cred for contributing to the development of urban renewal in the U.S.
So where to begin accessing an urban metro area the size of Atlanta (5.7 million)? First of all, unless you have weeks to explore the city, you should plan your personal itinerary in advance; and it would be wise to seek accommodations in the vicinity of the bulk of your intended destinations. Traffic, particularly at peak times, is a bear; and if you aren't familiar with the territory, navigating can be a chore. You might notice that there is a "Peach Tree"-something everywhere you turn, complicating matters.
8 WIREMAG.COM #07 2018
PHOTOS COURTESY OF ATLANTA CVB
How else to explain the evolution of the ubiquitous Southern city into a modern, massive, multicultural metro that it is today? OK, so it might be a stretch to compare Sherman's dismantling of an entire city with modern urbanism, but there is no denying just how far Atlanta has come. The Georgia capital is also a gleaming regional mecca and an example of the thriving South. Given its proximity, it's also a frequent destination for South Floridians – and vice versa.
Atlanta's neighborhoods are distinct. Downtown hosts most of the pro sports action, entertainment and nightlife. Midtown is known as the "heart of the arts." East Atlanta is still on the rise. Buckhead combines glitz and rowdy in an uncommon but engaging mix. You'll find inexpensive chains, intimate inns and luxurious resort hotels clustered all over. Buckhead has several impressive addresses in the Intercontinental Buckhead, Ritz-Carlton and Mandarin Oriental. In Midtown, the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta is exquisite and conveniently close to Piedmont Park, the High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Hip and sleek, yet faithful to its roots, the Ellis Hotel bridges Atlanta's past and present like no other hotel in the city with a look and feel entirely unique. Compiling a daytime agenda is all about your own interests. You could schedule an entire week around the pro sports teams. Atlanta CityPass will give you discounts to a number of the most popular attractions, such as Atlanta Aquarium, the Atlanta Zoo, the World of Coca-Cola and more. The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is a must if you're traveling with kids or a new, brainy boyfriend. Atlanta's role in history dominates Center for Civil and Human Rights and Atlanta History Center. Few miss Six Flags over Georgia, one of the most popular destinations in the entire state. No trip would be complete without exploring Underground Atlanta. Right in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Underground Atlanta was a milepost for the development of modern Atlanta and offers ongoing performances, eclectic shopping and food and much more. When the sun sets, Atlanta nightlife takes over with its rich diversity and distinct local sound within some of those genres. Midtown continPhoto courtesy of Atlanta CVB

ues to be the center of gay life in Atlanta and among the most renowned "gayborhoods" in the South, LGBTQ clubs, stores and nightlife can be found in all Atlanta neighborhoods. Blake's on the Park is an icon in Midtown. Friends is a more off-thebeaten path and more sedate, great for winding down a day or catching up with friends. Bulldogs in Midtown is generally rich in DJ talent. Part of your planning should include checking out what DJs are playing where and when, as Atlanta has as vibrant a live music scene as any city. Modern Atlanta's diversity includes a burgeoning LGBTQ presence, and the city hosts a sizable Pride in October and a wildly popular Black Pride weekend traditionally at the end of the summer. Whether it's arts and culture, park hopping, pro sports, exploring history or a rich nightlife that seems to have exploded in recent years, Atlanta is a modern, urban playground. That's not too shabby considering they had to rebuild the city, and a sense of community, after it was nearly erased from the landscape 150 years ago. How's that for redevelopment? Michael W. Sasser has been a travel writer for more than 20 years, for publishers ranging from Time Out and Frommer's to Miami Herald Custom Publishing and ABARTA Media. What is TRUVADA for PrEP?
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: ® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. ® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. ® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must continue to use safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. ® You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. ® If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. ® To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: ® Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. ® Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. ® Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. ® Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. ® If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: ® Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.
What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: ® Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA. ® Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. ® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. ® Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? ® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. ® If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA. ® If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. ® All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. ® If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. • Bone problems. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP include stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. These are not all the possible side effects of TRUVADA. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor your health before and during treatment with TRUVADA for PrEP.
BEFORE TAKING TRUVADA FOR PrEP Tell your healthcare provider if you: • Have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. • Have any other medical conditions. • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. • Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can pass to the baby in breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take: • Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist. • Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about medicines that should not be taken with TRUVADA for PrEP.
HOW TO FURTHER REDUCE YOUR RISK • Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. • Do not share needles or personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them.
GET MORE INFORMATION • This is only a brief summary of important information about TRUVADA for PrEP. STUNNING CIRQUE DU SOLEIL PERFORMER & ATHLETE
By Rafa Carvajal Photos by David Vance. davidvanceprints.com

hilippe BĂŠlanger, a stunningly beautiful circus athlete riding a unicycle, stood out from a cast of gorgeous male performers with perfect bodies when I went to see the Cirque du Soleil show VOLTA, during its recently stop in South Florida. I loved VOLTA so much that I returned to see it for a second time and invited famed photographer David Vance, and his husband Kyle. I had a feeling David would be impressed by the plethora of handsome men on stage. During the show's intermission, David asked me if I thought it would be possible to reach out to the beautiful model riding the unicycle so he could do a photoshoot of him. I loved the idea and replied that I would reach out to my local Cirque PR contact, and inquire about it. So I did, and this week's cover story interview of Philippe is a product of that life experience. Enjoy the interview of Philippe and his great photos by David Vance.

"THE CIRCUS LEAVES A SWEET MEMORY." - FERNANDO BOTERO
Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? Philippe BĂŠlanger: I was born in Quebec City, Canada. I do own a few properties there, so I still call it home, but for the past six years I've been traveling for my job. RC: How do you stay in such great shape? PB: I'm a circus athlete, so every day I train with my partner Marie-Lee Guilbert. I throw her in the air, she stands on my head while I'm on a unicycle, and we perform a five minute act together at Cirque du Soleil's show VOLTA. We do 8-10 performances a week, which gives me a good leg and shoulder workout. On top of that, I like to hit the gym and work on specific muscle groups, like my chest and back. RC: What is your ideal workout? PB: I like to start with 20 minutes on the elliptical, then five sets of 6-12 reps each for 5-8 exercises. RC: What do you enjoy the most about performing for Cirque du Soleil? PB: They care about everything on tour, so it makes it really easy to be away from home. Plus, we have enough spare time to have other projects on the side. Such as Design KontroL, a sportswear brand that Marie-Lee and I are building. We design every product with partners in New York, and built the instruction manuals for our manufacturers in Canada. We import fabrics from Italy, then go into production. The other part of this creative project is the marketing side of it. We build all the content for social media. We also like working with other circus artists to promote the brand with their own skills. So, I guess that is my side project!

PHILIPPE BÉLANGER
RC: Why did you decide to join Cirque du Soleil? PB: I started doing a street show when I was 14 years old in Quebec City. I was performing with a friend of mine, Gabriel Beaudoin. We were doing unicycle, acrobatics, juggling and comic acts. Obviously, we both wanted to go work for Cirque du Soleil, as it is a company that its own roots are from street performing. Gabriel Beaudoin is also working for Cirque du Soleil in the show KURIOS. RC: What is the most challenging part of your job? PB: Not being able to see my buddy at home and my family. RC: What does it take to succeed as a Cirque du Soleil performer? PB: A lot of determination because there's a lot of competition. They hire the best athletes in the world and the best artists. Having something unique is clearly something valuable! That's what Marie-Lee and I have, our duo unicycle. RC: How did you learn to ride the unicycle? PB: One day, I broke my bicycle and made a unicycle with the rest of the parts. Two days later, I was riding it all over town. #justkidding RC: Boxers or briefs? PB: Boxers! I even like to pretend that we created the best sports boxer on the market with Design KontroL. RC: What is your favorite food? PB: Sushi. RC: What is your favorite place in the world, and why? PB: Madrid for the people, the food and the culture. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? PB: Follow my journey on Instagram @philbelan and @designkontrol.

HÔTEL GAYTHERING'S TH 4 ANNIVERSARY '80S PARTY
t's hard to believe it has been four years since I met Stephan Ginez and Alex Guerra when they opened Hôtel Gaythering. Fast forward to today, and Gaythering has become the place where so many members of our LGBTQ community come together on different nights or visit the spa; and where many gay tourists like to stay when visiting South Beach. The Gaythering has something for everyone to enjoy, whether it is weekend nights when many professionals come out for a drink, Sunday's sports league followed by a complimentary BBQ, or nights during the week when you can sing karaoke or play video games and trivia. I sat down with Alex to preview the '80s anniversary party and look back on the last four years. RC: Happy fourth anniversary! Tell us about Hôtel Gaythering's '80s inspired house party. AG: We like theme parties. We're gay. Have you met a gay that didn't love a theme? Inspired by Call Me By Your Name, we decided that the '80s was where we wanted to spend our fourth anniversary. 20 WIREMAG.COM #07 2018
"WE HAVE BUILT GAYTHERING UP TO BECOME A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE, AND BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN EMBRACED BY OUR LOCALS, EVERY EVENT WE PLAN IS SURROUNDED BY WHAT WE FEEL OUR GAYTHERING FAM WOULD APPRECIATE." - ALEX GUERRA
RC: Will there be any drink specials? AG: The '80s loved their Long Island Iced Teas, so we will have $5 Blue Long Islands all night. RC: What do you consider the most unique qualities of Hôtel Gaythering? AG: I would have to say that the vibe we embody is our most unique quality. Walk in and you feel like you're visiting a friend more so than a bar. Like Sex & the City had a fifth lady in NYC, our gay boys have the Gaythering. RC: Gaythering has become the place where the LGBTQ community comes together. How were you able to make that happen? AG: We knew the community was looking for an authentic place where they could be themselves with no pretentious behavior. We have built Gaythering
RC: What were the top three moments for you and Stephan at the Gaythering this past year? AG: This year, our Gaythering sports league had 230 guys sign up for volleyball. That's momentous. We also had a huge Art Gaysel 3. The excitement and love we felt during Art Gaysel was also momentous. Last would have to be getting to our fourth anniversary. Lots of work went into getting Gaythering's doors open, and even more work to be here 48 months later. That's truly momentous.
RC: How do you think Hôtel Gaythering will evolve over the next five years? AG: Woah! To look into the next five years would be getting way ahead of ourselves. We like to focus on the present and making sure that we are present to the needs of the community we have built. We hope to continue to create events and a space the community can be proud to call their own. RC: Is there anything else you'd like to share with Wire Magazine readers? AG: We want to thank you all for your embrace and love in the past four years. We are beside ourselves on how far we have come.
RC: Please give us a preview of any new initiatives at the Gaythering for 2018. AG: 2018 will be a year of facelifts for Gaythering. We have already started with some of our rooms and are working down into the bar and common areas. Look for updates in 2018. Our goal is to keep changing to meet the needs of our guests.
RC: What is the best part of owning and operating Hôtel Gaythering? AG: The people. All of our bar regulars and multi-visit "Gaythering Alumni" guests that make up the Gaythering Fam. People that we would have never met had there been no Gaythering and thus have changed our lives.
