LOVER OR HATER:
TAYLOR SWIFT IS ALL ABOUT THE FEELS
e've all had our share of lovers – the good, the bad and the ugly – but when it comes to leaving a trail of failed romances in her wake, no pop princess has a bigger reputation than Taylor Swift. How else would she have gotten that title for her last album? From fellow pop stars like Joe Jonas and Harry Styles to big screen juggernauts like Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Hiddleston, Swift's collection of suitors has given her a lot to sing about over the years. So, it should come as no surprise that she finally came full-circle and dubbed her latest collection Lover. If Swift's seventh album sounds a little too familiar, it's because she has once again joined forces with producer Jack Antinoff on almost every track, no doubt trying to recapture the magic of their last "hook-up," Reputation. However, Lover seems to be less of an evolution from her previous work, and more of a continuation of the synth-riddled menagerie that solidified her departure from Country. Most of the tracks, while successfully showcasing the 29-year-old's songwriting prowess, don't exactly offer anything new as far as production goes. The two singles that do step outside the audio box – "Me!" featuring hottie Brendon Urie and the new LGBTQ anthem "You Need To Calm Down" – were blessed by another producer, Joel Little.
feud with bestie Katy Perry and, of course, her rocky love life that always seems to spawn a No. 1 hit after every break-up, are just some of the accelerants that fueled her fire over the years. Now that she and KP have made up, Kanye has shut up and there's no (straight) man in her life, is the music alone enough to keep her winning streak going? In this case, not so much. Where 1989 and Reputation succeeded in breaking fresh ground for the artist, Lover struggles to find its identity and purpose. Stripped down songs While she has a knack for scripting tracks like the title track and the Dixie Chicks collab "Soon You'll Get Better" hint at that drive fans to sell out stadiums and drop a slide back into her Folk roots, but then they're bookended with tech-heavy their savings to own every piece of memo- offerings like "The Man" and the somber closer, "Daylight." rabilia her marketing team can dream up, you can't deny there's always been some Love her or hate her, there's no denying mama's got some skills, but even the controversy to push the needle just a little best of the best stumble every now and then. What she lacks in groundbreakbit further. Kanye's televised objection to her ing songs this time around, she does make up for with her outspoken views win at the 2009 MTV VMAs, her very public on LGBTQ rights; proven not only by her very gay video for "You Need To Calm Down" and her VMAs performance of the song with the phrase "Equality Act" splattered across the stage, but also by her never-ending support for our community's rights. If the cost of all that is one mediocre album, she's got all of my love!

PUBLISHER'S CORNER OUR NEIGHBORS IN THE BAHAMAS NEED OUR HELP!
Your Family Deserves The
BEST
I start my Publisher's Corner with a request to please help our neighbors in the Bahamas. About 180 miles from Miami, thousands of people are suffering from the unimaginable destruction and despair caused by Hurricane Dorian. The images I saw on TV were heartbreaking and brought tears to my eyes. Let's help the Bahamian people! Their lives and property were completely destroyed by the relentless winds and devastating storm surge brought upon them by an extremely powerful hurricane. A great organization you can consider supporting to help the Bahamas is Chef José Andrés' World Central Kitchen (WCK). Their mission is "A hot plate of food when it's needed most." They were on the ground in the Bahamas before hurricane Dorian had even left. According to Chef José Andrés, "Almost ten years ago, my wife Patricia and I had a big dream to start World Central Kitchen. We envisioned an organization that would create smart solutions to hunger and poverty… But we had no idea we would one day be answering the call in Puerto Rico and around the world – "Food First Responders" serving millions of meals each year. In the process, we learned that a small NGO can change the world through the power of food."

I have personally watched on the news how WCK's Chef Relief Team has stepped out of the kitchen after terrible disasters and promptly arrived on the front lines to provide meals to thousands of hungry people. Some of the recent places they have fed people in need include Haiti, Peru, Houston, Puerto Rico, California, Hawaii, Indonesia, Guatemala, Mexico, the Carolinas, Florida, Nebraska, Mozambique, Colombia, Venezuela and the Bahamas. Last year alone, WCK responded to 13 natural and man made disasters to feed and help people. You can visit wck.org to learn more about WCK's work and donate funds to help them fulfill their mission. This week, we bring you our annual Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival GEMS 2019 issue. We highly encourage you to attend the GEMS film festival for the great films they will be showcasing. We sat down with Director of Events Programming Nicolas Calzada to preview what's in store for this year's GEMS. Make sure you also check out the centerfold photos of our cover model Ryan MacGregor from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, photographed by David Vance. In Top Trax, DJ FR8-O dishes on Taylor Swift's seventh album, Lover; while in Shopping Bag, we feature four products that will help you beat the summer heat. Finally, in Home Chef Michael Sasser recommends some websites where you can buy international and gourmet ingredients – such as delicious cheeses, special spices, lamb, veal or duck – and have them delivered right to your home to prepare your favorite meal.

HOME CHEF
By Michael W. Sasser
Yet, it can't always be home chef easy. To be clever and offer new tastes you need to search out foreign and gourmet ingredients. Following are a few websites from which you can buy such ingredients online and have them delivered right to your home. In most cases, they're inexpensive and easy to acquire via mail.
igourmet.com All hail the king of gourmet online ordering! I routinely order gourmet foreign cheeses and other specialties from their site. Delivery is affordable, the choice is huge and they offer serving ideas, partnering ideas and product descriptions that are invaluable. It's a onestop destination for foreign products and notes on use. Check out igourmet.com. Besides the fact that you can read about anything you are considering buying, the advice on use, tastes and partnering are second to no Internet site. It's enjoyable to peruse and easy from which to order. Enjoy! It is fun and sure to enhance your ordering – and not expensive relative to finding these multinational orders online.

It's no surprise that I am a Thai food lover. I like the balance of taste and the combination of distinct ingredients – there is just no comparison. It's my favorite cuisine but also hard to shop in your neighborhood. When you need fresh ingredients like Thai Basil, lime leaves, curry leaves, etc. – it's difficult to shop locally. Oh, South Florida is better than most places. Still not easy. You will also find sauces, quick-cooking ideas, and recipes from this amazing site. I shop here every month. You won't be disappointed if you visit importfood.com for one ethnicity or another. It's essential to international tastes.
I have a thing. If I am going to serve fine meats, like lamb or veal or duck, I turn to Tender Filet. Yes, these days, South Florida markets can hook you up. How well varies. Tender Filet never leaves you in doubt. I am, as of this writing, planning a birthday dinner for guests based on North African flavors and I am getting my protein from Tender Filet. I want the best lamb I know how to get and this is my personal vendor for more than a decade. Steaks, chops, prepared hams… it is all there. But the uncommon meats like duck and lamb are a specialty, and Tender Filet offers the very best. They offer amazing assortments of beef, pork and everything else you can imagine – at good prices. I stock my freezer annually with their well-priced goodies. You should look into doing the same. Prices are reasonable, quality is unquestioned and there are lots of guides to preparation. This is a domestic company so you can also support local producers. There is no downside to supporting this wonderful purveyor and you will never forget the quality of meat you can buy.

MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL
GEMS 2019 By Michael Bustamante
elcome to Wire Magazine's Miami Dade College's (MDC) Miami Film Festival GEMS 2019 edition, coming to MDC's Tower Theater October 10-13, 2019. The Festival is a fall extension of the annual, internationally-acclaimed Miami Film Festival, which will celebrate its 37th edition March 6-15, 2020. We highly encourage you to attend the GEMS film festival for the great films they appropriately refer to as "gems." To purchase tickets, visit gems2019.miamifilmfestival.com. This year, Pedro Almodóvar's Pain and Glory is set to open the Festival. "Miami Film Festival's long history with Almodóvar extends more than 35 years to when his third feature, Dark Habits, premiered at our first edition in 1984," said Miami Film Festival director Jaie Laplante. "Pain and Glory is Almodóvar's most personal film to date and his special history with Miami Film Festival makes it the perfect introduction to our fall showcase of films that will dominate conversations in the upcoming award season." The closing night film will be Parasite by Bong Joon-ho, a South Korean filmmaker known for his internationally-acclaimed films such as The Host, Mother and Snowpiercer. Parasite has been deemed as "quite possibly the most unique and unforgettable film of the year" by the Festival. Wire Magazine sat down with Director of Events Programming Nicolas Calzada to preview what's in store for GEMS 2019. Michael Bustamante: Tell us a bit about yourself and how you became involved with GEMS. Nicolas Calzada: I'm a filmmaker with a background in film and television. My first professional interaction with the Miami Film Festival was as a filmmaker with a short film in its 2010 edition. Ever since Jaie Laplante became executive director in 2011, I have been more deeply involved as a member of the programming committee and, during several festivals, as a juror. In 2017, I came on board as the director of events programming and have been deeply involved in programming for both Miami Film Festival GEMS in October and our Miami Film Festival in March, as well as the year-round programming of our arthouse theater – MDC's Tower Theater. MB: How would you characterize the overall scope of films in GEMS 2019? NC: I love to think of GEMS as South Florida's advance peek at the upcoming season's absolute best films. The kind of films that are going to be in every single awards-season conversation, mixed in with some hidden gems that are international hits yet to be seen in the U.S., as well as some exciting discoveries from up-and-coming filmmakers. But the defining characteristic is quality. These are all carefully curated selections – groundbreaking films that will make a strong impression on our audience. There's also a wonderful mix of films from established auteurs like Pedro Almodovar, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Céline Scia18 WIREMAG.COM #19 2019

mma to name just a few; and up-and-coming directors starting to break out like Carlo Mirabelle-Davis and Chinonye Chukwu. MB: Tell our readers about the films in this year's Festival. What is your favorite one, and why? NC: It's impossible to pick a favorite, this lineup is so strong. Bong Joon-ho's Parasite, which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes this year, is one of the most startling and original films you'll ever see, as funny as it is nerve-wracking and insightful. François Ozon's By The Grace Of God is so timely and compelling, reminiscent of the Oscar-winning Spotlight. Céline Sciamma's Portrait Of A Lady On Fire is daring, sensual, visually stunning, with standout performances from two of France's best young actresses. Chinonye Chukwu's Clemency is powerful filmmaking at its best and maybe a sneak peek at a Best Actress Oscar contender in Alfre Woodard. If forced to stop, I'll stop there, but I could go on down the whole lineup. It's really exceptional! MB: Describe GEMS in three words. NC: Groundbreaking, stunning films. MB: Tell our readers about this year's social events for GEMS 2019. NC: The social highlight of GEMS 2019 will definitely be the Opening Night Party: Sabor De Almodovar after the screening of Pedro Almodovar's latest masterpiece Pain And Glory. The party, sponsored by Estrella Damm, will be a celebration of all things Almodovar and Spain, with Spanish food and beverages, and featuring characters from Almodóvar films at the Estrella Damm photo station.

MB: What are you most looking forward to for GEMS 2019? NC: As part of the great team that put this program of films together, the biggest thrill for me is seeing the amazed reactions of audience members after they watch these films. In a few months, as they start to stack up award nominations, everybody will be talking about these films, but for now, outside of the film industry, they are still little known. We get to give South Florida a very early peek at them. For me, that is a thrill. MB: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? NC: There is really something for everybody at GEMS 2019. It's 17 feature films, but they are so lovingly curated that you will find a bit of everything. Cinephiles can camp out all weekend and watch one Oscar contender after another, but also people with more specific tastes will find plenty to love. The documentary Letter To The Editor by renowned documentarian Alan Berliner is absolutely special and timely. The romantic comedy Top End Wedding from Australia is the textbook definition of a hidden "gem." So funny and original and ultimately moving. We're proud of every film we're showing. #19 2019 WIREMAG.COM 19

PREVIEW 15 OF THE EXCEPTIONAL SELECTIONS FOR MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL GEMS 2019 Photos provided by Miami Film Festival GEMS 2019
BY THE GRACE OF GOD
(Belgium, France, 2019) Director: François Ozon In French, with English subtitles GEMS Synopsis: In By the Grace of God, acclaimed filmmaker François Ozon dramatizes the story of three Preynat victims – Alexandre Guérin (Melvil Poupaud), a lawyer and devoted Catholic family man, François Debord (Denis Ménochet), a declared atheist who wants to bring media attention to the case, and Emmanuel Thomassin, an emotionally damaged younger man who carries the heaviest burden and the effects of prolonged trauma.
CLEMENCY
HONEY BOY
GEMS Synopsis: Clemency is an indelible character study and a searing look at the toll of capital punishment on the lives of all it touches – including the families of victims seeking justice. Filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu, the first African-American woman to win Sundance's highest prize, is observant to the disproportionate toll death row reaps on black men, but also alive to the possibility of hope, and humanity finding its way back from even the darkest emotional places.
GEMS Synopsis: Artists often draw from real-life experience, but few approach this practice quite like actor Shia LaBeouf. Having received court-ordered therapy writing while in rehab, LaBeouf – who over the years has been the subject of numerous public misbehavior headlines – took the mandated writing and turned it into something tremendous: the screenplay for Honey Boy.

LES MISÉRABLES
(France, 2019) Director: Ladj Ly In French, with English subtitles GEMS Synopsis: Victor Hugo's 1862 classic novel Les Misérables unforgettably depicted the abject poverty and state violence endured by residents in the Paris suburb Montfermeil, a setting symbolically representing a greater view of French society. Taking Hugo's title for his fiction feature debut, director Ladj Ly returns to modern-day Montfermeil and finds that the tensions between the racially diversified, impoverished community and the police enforcing the status quo are remarkably similar to the world of Jean Valjean and Hugo's characters, even more than 150 years later.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR (U.S., 2019) Director: Alan Berliner In English
GEMS Synopsis: For 40 years, filmmaker Alan Berliner has clipped out from the pages of The New York Times photos that caught his eye, keeping them meticulously filed and cross-indexed as a self-appointed archivist and librarian. Driven by his obsession, Berliner has completed the work of nearly a lifetime, transforming and reinterpreting his collection of images into a statement about the nature of humankind. Letter to the Editor is a film essay with multiple themes and a stunning array of thousands of photographs from Alan Berliner's collection. This film delivers poignant reflections on the power of photography, the importance of print publications, and what it means when technology brings a dramatic change to century-old traditions.
LITUS
(Spain, 2019) Director: Dani de la Orden In Spanish, with English subtitles GEMS Synopsis: A big chill has descended upon a group of Barcelona thirtysomething friends. Six months before, their cherished friend Litus inexplicably took his own life. His loving friends gather to celebrate his memory, but a bombshell secret awaits them: Litus left behind a goodbye letter for each of them. A moving drama with impeccably timed moments of humor, Litus is an invitation to reflect on life, relationships and our connections to those we hold most dear in life.
MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN (U.S., 2019) Director: Edward Norton In English
GEMS Synopsis: Twenty years in the making, Edward Norton's passion project Motherless Brooklyn finds the famed actor working quadruple duty as writer, director, producer and star of this inventive adaptation of Jonathan Lethem's novel of the same name. Growing up an orphan with Tourette syndrome, Lionel (Norton) spent his early years trying to find his place in the world. Then private detective Frank Minna (Bruce Willis) took him under his wing. Now a fullfledged employee of Frank's agency, Lionel finds his world turned upside down when Frank is murdered. Determined to solve the mystery of who killed his mentor, Lionel sets off on a quest that takes him from Brooklyn to Harlem, where he discovers a trail of shocking political corruption in the process. #19 2019 WIREMAG.COM 21
PAIN AND GLORY
(Spain, 2019) Director: Pedro Almodóvar In Spanish, with English subtitles GEMS Synopsis: Pain and Glory is legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar's most personal, semi-autobiographical film to date. The film centers on Salvador Mallo (played by Antonio Banderas, who won Best Actor at Cannes Film Festival for this role), a Spanish film director in his 60s. Salvador receives an invitation by the Madrid Cinematheque for a retrospective screening of Sabor, a film that he made more than 30 years ago. The invitation triggers a comical, edgy reunion with Alberto Crespo (Asier Etxeandia), the actor who starred in Sabor, and then later a reunion with Federico Delgado (Leonardo Sbaraglia), the Argentinian man who was Salvador's first adult love just as many years ago. Floating in and out of Salvador's memories is his unresolved relationship with his deceased mother (played in her younger years by Penélope Cruz, and later years by Julieta Serrano).
PARASITE
PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE
STAFF ONLY
GEMS Synopsis: At once hilariously funny and nail-bitingly tense, Bong Joon-ho's class satire Parasite is quite possibly the most unique and unforgettable film of the year, and has had international critics swooning since it won the Palme D'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Defying convention and predictability at every step, the film centers on two families whose paths become inexorably linked and the wild events that result: the affluent Park family and the street smart but poor Kim family. The Kim's children, led by college-aged Ki-woo, manage to forge their way into the Park family's lives as tutors and art therapists. In exchange for their services, the Kim family finally has a path out of poverty, but this fragile balance built on lies will quickly unravel.
GEMS Synopsis: Following the unexpected death of her sister, Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) is brought back from a convent and betrothed to an unknown man from Milan. Héloïse's mother, La Comtesse (Valeria Golina), is set on having Héloïse's portrait painted, but she refuses to pose, in rebellion against the arranged marriage into which she is being forced. So La Comtesse slyly hires Marianne, a rare female professional artist in the period, to secretly paint Héloïse's portrait, all the while posing as her ostensible companion. Through walks, profound conversations, and long-held, tantalizing looks, the relationship between Héloïse and Marianne evolves with delicacy and intimacy.
GEMS Synopsis: In a time where new generations are often aggressively pursuing some stark definitions of political correctness, Staff Only hits a zeitgeist nerve with a young protagonist who is as intelligent as she is inexperienced. Catalan director Neus Ballús turns an honest and critical eye to a rich cast of characters, all of them compassionate, flawed human beings trying to live their best lives – yet often at unforeseen costs. Embracing the rich Senegalese landscape, Staff Only is as charming as it is poignant, while asking fundamental questions about how we grow individually, and in relation to others.

TAXI TO TREASURE ROCK
(Spain, 2019) Director: Alejo Flah In Spanish, with English subtitles GEMS Synopsis: Freshly released from a Madrid prison, Argentinian con artist and professional charmer Diego has one idea to rebuild his life: finding a lost stash of gold hidden inside the legendary Rock of Gibraltar. Diego puts his snake charmer ways to convince León (Dani Rovira of the Ocho appellidos vascos films), a misanthropic, miserly taxi driver flooded with debt and rage against the system, to drive him from Madrid to Gibraltar. On their chaotic road trip they meet Sandra (Ingrid García-Jonsson), a runaway bride-to-be who is just enough of a misfit to connect with Diego and León, and join their eccentric, life-changing adventure.
THE TRUTH
(France, Japan, 2019) Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda In French, with English subtitles GEMS Synopsis: To iconic actress Fabienne (Deneuve), nothing is more important than giving the perfect performance. Her commitment to her work has long put a strain on her personal life, and when her new memoir comes out, those closest to her find it harder and harder to stay by her side. When her longtime assistant suddenly quits, her estranged daughter Lumir (Binoche) – who's in town visiting along with her actor husband, Hank (Ethan Hawke) – steps into the role of assisting Fabienne while on the set of her new sci-fi film Memories of My Mother. With a mother and daughter so unable to communicate their complicated feelings to one another, Fabienne's new film (based on the Ken Liu short story of the same name) is a resonant, meta example of life imitating art.
