PUBLISHER'S CORNER THE ABSURDITY MUST END This week, we bring you a cover story about the upcoming Sizzle Miami 2017 urban gay festival with an interview of CEO Dwight Powell to discuss the origin of Sizzle and what's on tap for this year's anticipated event. As a proud sponsor of Sizzle, Wire Magazine invites everyone to attend this year's festival and party with sexy men from around the world who come to Miami every year. Some of this year's events include a yacht party, pool party, music festival on the beach and nightlife parties at venues such as at Club Space and Heart. Have fun! Things are certainly sizzling in Washington D.C., and not for good reason. Last week's firing by off-kilter President Trump of off-kilter FBI Director James Comey has set off a firestorm of controversy, including apt comparisons to the twisted presidency of Richard Nixon. The lunacy of the administration never stops, but in Postmodern Politics in this issue of Wire Magazine, Editor Michael W. Sasser offers a different take on the Trump-Nixon comparison: Hey, Trump fans, embrace it – that might be the best you can hope for. On second thought, if that is the best the Trump presidency can be, it is time to carefully consider if Trump's latest actions raise to the level of impeachable offenses. The absurdity of Trump's presidency and his actions to, at minimum, impede, or, at worse, obstruct and stop the FBI's investigations of potential ties between the Trump campaign and the Russians, and former national security advisor Michael Flynn's Moscow connections have led many to strongly reconsider this man's ability to be the commander in chief of the United States. As I read about their actions and listened to Trump and his lackeys speak on national television, I can't help but to both laugh and be horrified that these people are supposed to be leading our nation and protecting us from harm. Half the time they don't have a clue of what they are doing or saying and can't hurry enough to make completely contradicting statements about what the president just said or did; or simply flat out lie. This is outrageous! We teach our children not to lie because it is wrong. So when did things change so much in our country that we must now accept a buffoon as president that lies to our faces as often as he wishes? By his own actions, statements and never ending tweets, the President of the United States has lost all credibility with a majority of the American people. He has also lost credibility with many in both political parties, members of Congress and our allies. Picture what serious policy makers must think about a president being accused of firing the head of the FBI to stop the investigation into Russian ties with the Trump campaign who meets with the Russian Foreign Minister and the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. in the Oval Office with just a Russian photographer and no U.S. media and proceeds to, on the fly, take it upon himself to declassify sensitive information and share it with them. The Russians who believe it is OK to invade and take over a country next door and support to the end a murderous Syrian dictator who gases his own people. Really Trump? This is what the President of the United States is doing? This is absolutely absurd and sickening on some many levels!

What is TRUVADA for PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis)?
u You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or serious liver
TRUVADA is a prescription medicine that can be used for PrEP to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection when used together with safer sex practices. This use is only for adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This includes HIV-negative men who have sex with men and who are at high risk of getting infected with HIV-1 through sex, and male-female sex partners when one partner has HIV-1 infection and the other does not. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV-1. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must be HIV-negative. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1 infection. Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. u Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting TRUVADA for PrEP or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP to reduce your risk of getting HIV-1 infection: u You must continue using safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. u You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP. u To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: • Know your HIV-1 status and the HIV-1 status of your partners. • Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months or when your healthcare provider tells you. • Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV-1 to infect you. • Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior. • Have fewer sex partners. • Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. • If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. u If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: u Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, stomach-area pain, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or fast or abnormal heartbeats. uSerious liver problems. Symptoms of liver problems include your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, and/or stomach-area pain.
problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking TRUVADA for a long time. In some cases, these serious conditions have led to death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of these conditions. u Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. If you also have HBV and take TRUVADA, your hepatitis may become worse if you stop taking TRUVADA. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider. It's one of those success stories that you read about and can't believe it really happened. Challenged by her older brother to write an original song in order for her to play in his live show, a teenage Sigrid not only rose to the occasion, she found her true calling: to write and perform her own music for the world. Inspired by the scripts laid out before her by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, she weaves stories that are at once personal and universal, and way more advanced than you'd expect from your average 20-year-old small-town girl. It was her debut single "Don't Kill My Vibe" that first got people talking. Ironically, it was written about a less-than-fulfilling session she was put into with some other songwriters. "They made me feel like I was in the way," she told i-D Magazine. "I totally got that they might not be excited to work with me, but they didn't have to be rude!" It looks like she got the last laugh though. When her song premiered on Radio 1 last year, it was also voted "Hottest Record in the World" by the British radio station. Currently signed to Island Records, Sigrid has enough force behind her now to make even the shadiest songwriters stop and take notice. Flaunting a mere four tracks, the new EP – also titled Don't Kill My Vibe – is a carefully curated showcase for the emerging artist. Besides the
title single, the collection also features the Katy Perry-esque "Plot Twist," the anthemic "Fake Friends" and "Dynamite" – a haunting piano ballad that could have easily been snatched up by Adele or Sia, but thankfully is delivered flawlessly by the newcomer. As a whole, the EP is the perfect teaser for what will hopefully lead to a spectacular full-length album very soon. Now that pop's EDM obsession is safely in our collective rear view mirrors, it's becoming more and more obvious through the latest songs by acts like The Chainsmokers and Ed Sheeran that the scene is thirsting for more mid-tempo rhythms featuring strong vocals. If that's really the case, then someone like Sigrid will have no problem fitting in. The one thing she's still got going for her that those others don't is a fresh voice and the opportunity to re-introduce solid songwriting to the world of pop music. "I guess the key thing that's always inspired me is just really well written pop songs. Playing piano and singing whatever comes naturally is the best thing for me – the only thing that feels genuine."

or whatever reason, Scandinavia seems to be churning out pop singers faster than I can devour a plate of IKEA meatballs. Robyn, Tove Lo and Zara Larsson are just a few of the groundbreaking talent that continues to pour in from far across the Atlantic. The latest import that's about to take her rightful place next to her Scandi sisters is Norwegian-born, Sigrid. You may not have heard of her yet, but with a fresh new EP out and an online buzz that just can't shut up about her, it won't be long before we catch her riding shotgun with James Corden.

SIZZLE ONCE AGAIN By Rafa Carvajal & Michael W. Sasser Photos provided by Sizzle 2017
ith the progress the LGBTQ community in the United States has made in recent years, the face of the community and the lives of its members have changed dramatically. For example, when Sizzle Miami launched in 2002, those who attended the urban LGBTQ event included droves of men, many closeted, who found in the event a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in droves of men like themselves. Fast-forward 15 years and the landmark event is the nation's sexiest, most exciting and celebrated event for the LGBTQ community over the Labor Day weekend. From May 25 through May 29, tens of thousands of party seekers from around the globe will descend on Miami for a long weekend of parties and revelry unlike any other. If Sizzle 2002 was a revelation for the community, then its modern iteration is a revolution – a proclamation to the world that the gay urban community stands in unity with other components of the global queer community. 14 WIREMAG.COM #20 2017
In advance of Sizzle Miami 2017, Wire Magazine sat down with CEO Dwight Powell to discuss the origin of Sizzle and what's on tap for this year's anticipated event. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about the goal and origin of Sizzle Miami. Dwight Powell: We're now in our 16th year here at Sizzle, which initially grew out of a need for more upscale events targeting the urban gay market. Back then, while there were a few other urban events, they were all centered around gay Pride and HIV awareness. While those were and still are important, I wanted to create something different: an event or party where we could showcase our community in a much more positive way beyond the stigma of HIV/AIDS and traditional Prides. RC: How has Sizzle Miami evolved over the years? DP: From this vantage point, I've seen it all. Our community has changed drastically over the years. One mainstay, however, we all still love to party. The earlier days of Sizzle were frequented by attendees that were a bit older, more mature, and mostly closeted. For them, Sizzle provided a space where men from all over the country could come and really let loose, and lose themselves in an atmosphere filled with other professional, like-minded party goers. A space where they could escape, do and say almost anything that they could not in their own hometowns. Over the years, fortunately – some would say unfortunately – as society norms and attitudes towards gays and lesbians evolved, so has Sizzle. RC: To what do you attribute the great success of Sizzle? DP: Provide people with top-notch, quality entertainment, value for their dollar, and you basically have a customer for life. That's been my secret, well not really a secret, but just always putting my best foot forward and not settling for anything but the best.
#20 2017 WIREMAG.COM 15
RC: Who comes to Sizzle Miami and where do guests come from? DP: We're here in Miami, but Florida accounts for a very small percentage of our attendees. Attended by 91% men and 93% people of color, Sizzle attracts people, both young, mature and in between from all over the county. We're also fortunate to have a huge international base notably from London, France, Toronto, the Bahamas and all of the other Caribbean islands. RC: What's on tap for Sizzle 2017? DP: As Bernie Sanders would say, "It's huge." It really is. After 15 years, we've totally revamped our 2017 event. From over-the-top production sets and decor produced by Vizion LED Events, to offering endless talent and celebrities, our attendees are in for a real treat. RC: Tell us about this year's headliner, DJs and performers. DP: From the nation's leading new hip-hop artist Young M.A, local favorite Trina, international heartthrob David McIntosh to gorgeous Porsha from the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Sizzle 2017 will definitely entertain. More than anything, Sizzle is well renowned for our high-energy, upbeat crunk DJs from all over the country, and 2017 will not disappoint. 16 WIREMAG.COM #20 2017
"WE'VE TOTALLY REVAMPED OUR 2017 EVENT. FROM OVERTHE-TOP PRODUCTION SETS AND DECOR PRODUCED BY VIZION LED EVENTS, TO OFFERING ENDLESS TALENT AND CELEBRITIES, OUR ATTENDEES ARE IN FOR A REAL TREAT." - DWIGHT POWELL
RC: Which Sizzle event are you most excited about this year? Why? DP: That's really, really hard. I love them all and for varied reasons. This is Miami, and Sizzle offers everything you would expect from a leading tropical vacation hotspot. Come on, there's a yacht party, pool party, music festival on the beach and stellar nightlife parties at venues such as at Club Space and Heart. Really, how can anyone choose just one? RC: Tell us about the Beach Park Music Festival at Virginia Key Beach Park. DP: Again, it's huge. We attempted this a few years ago and are bringing it back, but with a much bigger punch. After this year, we anticipate that the festival will become our signature event of the entire weekend. There's amazing entertainment starring Young M.A and other nationally known gay artists, businesses and vendors, food trucks, hype music, great drinks, an eye-dropping swimwear fashion show, and our lively crowd soaking up the great weather Miami is known for. RC: Describe Sizzle in three words. DP: So much fun! RC: What's in store for the future of Sizzle? DP: More must attend circuit parties and events uniquely tailored for and catered to urban gay men from around the world. And as I've mentioned before, our community is constantly changing. As they change, so will we. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DP: We're looking to the future. We're flirting with the idea of hosting a few international Sizzle like parties in London and Toronto. Those are huge markets for us and I think we would do well in those cities. So, stay tuned, maybe Wire Magazine would like to go on the road with us.

POSTMODERN POLITICS By Michael W. Sasser
TRUMP FANS SHOULD EMBRACE NIXON COMPARISON irculating as a headline of an article last week: Trump gets two scoops of ice cream at White House dinner, guests get one scoop. Seriously. The only thing more hysterical (in a losing one's mind way, not a haha way) than the hyperventilating press and political/advantaged class of society assaulting President Donald Trump is the Trump White House itself. Although, if it weren't for the previously serious nature of the presidency itself, at least there would be some humor factor in the foibles of Trump and Co., because these days it does look more like a reality TV show that will try anything for ratings.
Still, when Trump dumped FBI Director James Comey – a loon himself – and in the aftermath made reference to recorded conversations, he opened himself up to what qualifies as the harshest criticism yet. Yes, even harsher than that damned second scoop of ice cream. The obvious criticism stemming from the recorded conversation reference... drum roll, please... a comparison to one Richard Nixon. Reference tapes of White House conversations and, please, it's almost too obvious, even low-hanging fruit. Some Trump fans – and make no mistake, there are as many of them as there are of you – are outraged at the comparison of course. However, that just might be a mistake. Instead of being upset by the comparison, they should instead embrace it. OK, so there was the Watergate thing. Bungling morons breaking in, Nixon cover-up, revelation of recorded Oval Office conversations, presidential resignation, yatta, yatta. That's what pop history remembers of Nixon. Nixon...Watergate. Given it was a nasty scandal, it only makes sense. And, frankly, it doesn't help that Nixon was a nutty, tightass, angry little man with some colossal mommy issues. If ever there was a villain... right?
Despite his personal failings and involvement in the Watergate cover-up, and even with his resignation in shame, what Nixon accomplished in office was pretty amazing.
Except pop history has a habit of making figures professors don't like into caricatures while explaining away the brutal genocides crafted by figures professors do like. Actual history presents a far more nuanced Nixon. After all, Nixon did end the war in Vietnam, opened up China, ended the draft, established the Environmental Protection Agency and OSHA, signed Title IX into law, pushed for the 26th Amendment to lower the voting age to 18 and signed the ABM Treaty with the Soviet Union to calm nuclear tensions. Wow, EPA, OSHA, Title IX? On paper, Nixon has a vastly more liberal resume than any Democrat president in the 20th century with the possible exception of the iconic Franklin Delano Roosevelt – only without the specter of concentration camps for Japanese immigrants. Nixon even proposed a guaranteed income. A guaranteed income? That's the absolute peak of the liberal agenda.
However, hope springs eternal for the hard-core Trumpistas. After all, many of them think that coal mining is going to propel a 21st century economy and that our economic and social challenges can be solved by a southern border wall. So, why not embrace this hope too? Trump should only turn out to be a Nixon. Ironically, that's something both sides of the political divide might agree on – although for very different reasons.
20 WIREMAG.COM #20 2017
Come on, Trump fans, admit it – if his administration lasts long enough to achieve 10 percent of what Nixon did, history would at least have something nice to say about him. I wouldn't bet on it though.
