Abel Cruz and Jorge Freire, owners of Photo Studio Miami, have been taking photos of stunning male models for a number of years. Since the day I decided to partner with these incredibly talented photographers to showcase their work in Wire Magazine, we have been sharing their beautiful photography with our readers in a plethora of issues. For this week's issue, I sat down with Abel and Jorge to discuss the evolution of their work and their plans for the future. Our cover story interview also includes a photo essay of a selection of their male models that illustrates the range of their photography skills and the good looks of the men they often photograph. Also in this issue, we showcase Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne, who spend a lot of time in front of audiences without their clothes on, but they aren't models. Instead, they are two of Australia's most famous illusionists, who also happen to be buff boys with deliciously naughty senses of humor. Together, they are the stars of The Naked Magicians, the most unusual magic stage show you are likely to ever see – combining illusions, comedy and striptease in a celebration of all things bawdy. The Naked Magicians is set to take to the stage at the Arsht Center on June 4. Wire Magazine Editor Michael W. Sasser caught up with Christopher Wayne to discuss the origins of the show, what to expect from the performance and the career window for magicians who prance around naked. If your plans are going to take you out of town for a jaunt to Europe this summer, you may want to consider attending the famous Life Ball in Vienna as part of your travel plans, and a quick call to Steele Luxury Travel to get things rolling. The Life Ball is Europe's largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser and perhaps the most extravagant party in the world. The event is held in Vienna's iconic City Hall and brilliantly combines the most creative and talented facets of fashion, art and music. This year, Life Ball takes place on June 10 and Steele Luxury Travel is the exclusive U.S. travel partner for the Life Ball for the seventh consecutive time. In an exclusive interview with Wire Magazine, Dane Steele Green shares details of the event and the travel options available to potential participants. Also in this issue of Wire Magazine, Nutrition writer Anthony Reyes dishes on the ups and downs of the spectrum of artificial sweeteners, and in Top Trax, music writer DJ FR8-O discusses the merits of the diverse soundtrack for the LGBTQtheme heavy Netflix original series, Sense8.

THE NAKED MAGICIANS SAYS IT ALL hey're buff, bawdy and spend a lot of time working tricks – they are Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne, stars of The Naked Magicians. Better yet, the hot Aussies are en route to Miami for a June 4 performance at The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The world's naughtiest and funniest magic show strips away the top hats and capes to deliver full-frontal illusions. Starring the clever and seductive Tyler and Wayne, two of Australia's most famous magicians, The Naked Magicians combines magic and muscles with riotous laughs that take magic to a whole new level. The Aussie duo have been performing magic for nearly 20 years. The broad-shouldered Wayne, a proud owner of a freakishly long tongue, is the first Australian magician in TV history to have his own TV series. More Than Magic aired in Australia, New Zealand, England, as well as the United States. The sporty tan lines and incredible physique seen on stage hint at Tyler's Speedo-wearing days. He swam competitively at the Australian National Championships and Pan Pacific Games before becoming a professional magician for corporate events around the world. Tickets to the show may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center Box Office by calling 305.949.6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org. This show includes coarse language, sexual references and some nudity and is intended for audiences 18+.
"I LOVE SEEING PEOPLE'S REACTIONS TO A SHOW THE LIKES OF WHICH THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE." - CHRISTOPHER WAYNE
8 WIREMAG.COM #21 2017
"YOU WILL SEE SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING, NAUGHTY MAGIC." - CHRISTOPHER WAYNE
I caught up with the hilarious and affable Christopher Wayne to discuss the upcoming show, his inspiration and what to expect when the naked illusionists wave their magic wands on stage. Michael W. Sasser: What was the inspiration for your interest in magic? Christopher Wayne: I've loved magic my entire life. I grew up a huge fan of David Copperfield. Through him, I learned a valuable lesson, that it isn't about tricks, it's about entertaining people. Our show has amazing tricks, but it's all about entertainment, about fun. MWS: So, what was the inspiration for the naked bit; how did that happen? CW: We had this idea for a naughty magic show. No one had ever done that. We thought that surely this was either the greatest idea ever, or the worst idea! It actually comes from Magic Mike. My partner's name is Mike and people started calling him "Magic Mike." It all came together from that. That's how it all got started! MWS: Readers want to know – how nude is the show? CW: Oh, we take it all off. We start off in suits and take it all off from there. It's kind of like a Grindr date. Sure, there are clothes on, but you know it's not going to last. Yeah, it will be an hour or so, but live with it. What's a night out without foreplay?
MWS: Which takes more of your time working on – staying in shape, illusions or comic timing? CW: Getting in shape was hard. I lost 80 pounds since we started. Mike has been a swimmer. Magic is actually the easiest part. Anyone can learn that. Getting in shape and staying in shape takes a lot of work and a lot of discipline on the road. There's not a lot of sex, drugs and rock and roll on the road. More like masturbation and Netflix. I wish I was joking! The comedic timing is very challenging; we've been at it for years and still work on it all of the time. MWS: What's your favorite part of doing the show? CW: I love seeing people's reactions to a show the likes of which they have never seen before. I know when we are going to get these amazing reactions and I can't wait to see them. Plus, particularly in 2017, the show is an opportunity to stop worrying about things and come and spend 90 minutes laughing. MWS: What would surprise people to know about the show? CW: Well, part of the show is one trick that involves the entire audience. The magic leaves the stage and goes right into the hands of every member of the audience. MWS: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? CW: The number one thing is that we have been on tour since February and performed in 60 cities. One of our last shows is the one in Miami and we want to go out with a bang. Also, in 2015, we were contacted by an American tour company, the company we are still with. They took us to Tampa and Fort lauderdale, where we sold out. That was really our big break, so Florida is really in our hearts.
MWS: Describe what The Naked Magicians is. CW: It's Magic Mike with actual magic! We promise three things. They are bold things but we have stuck by them. One, it is the funniest comedy show you will see. Two, you will see some of the most amazing, naughty magic. Three, this is delivered by two buff, naked Aussies. It's not a complex formula. It's like chocolate and peanut butter. Only it's not Reese's Pieces... it's ours! MWS: Given the naked component of the show, there must be a window for you guys before it becomes a whole different kind of performance, right? CW: Ha! Well, the Chippendales are still performing in their 60s! We acknowledge that we have time limits. When our time is up, our time is up. It's not about us, though. It's about the audience. I'm in my 30s and in the best shape of my life. But maybe someday, we will hand it off to some young Aussies.

SWEETENER SAVVY: ARE ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE?
Hold it right there. This is where you stop and ask yourself: are artificial sweeteners all that good for you? There have been numerous studies done to determine whether artificial sweeteners can cause negative health outcomes. The results have been completely inconclusive – meaning that although there is evidence to show that artificial sweeteners can impact your health, there isn't enough evidence to say that with absolute certainty. Studies done on mice showed that those fed regular sugar maintained their glucose levels while those on artificial sweeteners were having glucose intolerance – the symptom that leads to diabetes. Another study I read put sugar and Splenda (sucralose) in front of a bunch of ants. The ants went for the Splenda, sure, but they also died upon consumption. What a way to go, right?
Splenda (sucralose), as mentioned earlier, is an artificial sweetener commonly used by those with glucose issues. It's low-calorie, which most find appealing, and many prefer the taste over other sugar alternatives. There has been some evidence, however, that the consumption of sucralose can lead to joint inflammation. Sweet'N Low or Equal (aspartame) is an artificial sweetener that has received a lot of negative attention. Studies have shown that continual use of aspartame can lead to liver damage. Those with a disease called PKU (phenylketonuria) must avoid it at all costs; your body is unable to metabolize the sweetener. You've probably also heard of Stevia. It is zero-calorie, completely natural (though some products do refine it a bit), and is plant-based; it is derived from the stevia leaf. Studies have shown that Stevia is the best option for those who need to manage their sugar levels and it can also help reduce inflammation in the body. It is about 200 times sweeter than regular sugar, which means you don't need to put quite as much in your coffee. What's my vote? I always recommend Stevia. Regardless, this is not about me – this about all of you and your health. The first step is always to see your doctor to know your lab values. If there is anything abnormal, have your doctor refer you to see a registered dietitian in your area to help modify your intake and customize it to your personal needs.
Where does that leave us then? The best way Now, you're just a bit more sweetener savvy! to handle this is to talk about the sugar alternatives on the market to help you make the best Always consult a registered dietitian to help determine your individual health and nutrition decision for your health and lifestyle. needs. Visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at EatRight.Org for more information.

e love sugar. We just can't help ourselves. No, really – we seriously can't help ourselves! It has been proven that when we consume sugar, it fires off the same area of our brain that goes off when we do heroin or cocaine; not that you do that or anything. Therefore, those with emotional or stress eating habits tend to go for sweets as a form of comfort. The pleasure principle in the brain makes it taste and feel that much better. In a world where sugar is everywhere and overconsumption leads to weight gain and the onset of comorbidities (diabetes and hypertension, for example), we look for alternatives to keep our sugar levels down. Thus, we turn to artificial sweeteners as the answer.

PHOTO STUDIO MIAMI
THE EVOLUTION OF
By Rafa Carvajal and Michael W. Sasser Photos by Jorge Freire & Abel Cruz www.photostudiomiami.com 14 WIREMAG.COM #21 2017
n the world of the arts, and certainly in the world that is South Florida, change, evolution and diversity are absolute essentials. Abel Cruz and Jorge Freire of Photo Studio Miami are among the artistic professionals who are aware of this reality – and who personify it. Over the course of their laudable careers, and in developing their well-known and well-regarded style, they have always continued to evolve to meet evolution in society and the demands of the marketplace. Already considered some of the best photographers of beautiful models, in recent years, Cruz and Freire have branched out to other areas of photography. They're now taking their approach to fashion photography, where their ability to convey mood and bring out the best in their models accentuates high fashion. Furthermore, they are bringing innovation to their work in photography. For example, the dynamic duo celebrated Halloween with a sexy fashion photo shoot by Cruz themed around Alice in Wonderland. In Abel's wonderland, the characters became sexy male models and the palatial gardens became Villa Vizcaya, one of South Florida's most iconic and beautiful settings.
"OUR INSPIRATION COMES FROM EVERYWHERE. IT CAN BE FROM A PIECE OF ROPE, A PAINTING THAT INSPIRES US, A MOVIE, POLITICS, HOLIDAYS... IT'S HARD TO EXPLAIN." - JORGE FREIRE
#21 2017 WIREMAG.COM 15
Wire Magazine caught up with Abel and Jorge to discuss their work and their ongoing evolution as stellar photographers. Rafa Carvajal: Who is Photo Studio Miami, for those readers who do not know you? Jorge Freire: Photo Studio Miami is the creative home of photographers Abel Cruz and Jorge Freire, located in Hollywood, FL. It is a safe place where everyone can dream, everyone is beautiful and anything is possible. RC: What initially drew you guys to photography and how did you become professional photographers? JF: I started shooting because of a boy crush I had in high school. Luis Orta... was that boy ever beautiful! Little did I know that this journey I was about to embark on would lead me to my destiny. Abel Cruz: My creative outlet was theater. I did it for many, many years. When Jorge and I started dating, he kept telling me to shoot. I fought him on it for a long time until one day I moved on from the stage and found myself needing a new creative outlet. I picked up the camera and haven't put it down since. RC: How has Photo Studio Miami evolved over the years? JF: It's really changed. We started off doing fitness work, then we met Francisco Azucar who was our angel and opened up our eyes to the wonderful world of fashion. After his passing, we just kept shooting guys and just found a niche with beautiful men. Recently celebrity stylist Joey Rolon has joined our team and we are combining our talents to take our work to another level. As creatives, we are constantly dreaming of what to do next. RC: Where do you get your inspiration from currently and how does it shape your work? JF: Our inspiration comes from everywhere. It can be from a piece of rope, a painting that inspires us, a movie, politics, holidays... it's hard to explain. We definitely look at life and people through a different set of eyes. We are artists who paint the world with our cameras. Our photos are our voice.
16 WIREMAG.COM #21 2017
RC: What is your current favorite type of photography? Fitness, fashion or commercial? Why? JF: The beauty of photography is that every project is different. One day we could be shooting headshots and the next day a merman on the beach. In some cases, we have been shooting editorial work on a mountaintop on a Saturday and then underwater photography on a Sunday. There is no true favorite type of photography for us‌ the connections we make with other creatives, with our models and immortalizing a moment in time... that is what gives us life. RC: What surprises you the most when you look back at your work? JF: Looking back at our old work could easily be compared to looking at pictures of your childhood. The essence of the work and the passion behind it is still the same, but my, how we have grown. RC: How has technology affected your work and how have you adapted? Do you enjoy the advancements? JF: Technology has given us freedom to create and wings to fly. The digital era has really made it more possible for people to explore the possibilities. Back in the day, you had 36 images in a roll of film and no preview screen. While we do welcome all sorts of new technology, there's much to be missed about being in a darkroom, developing your film and slowly seeing that image come to life. It was like magic. RC: What have you learned through photographing people? JF: We have learned that we are really all the same. We all have dreams, aspirations, problems and adversities. We have met some amazing people throughout our photography career. They have been our muses and have inspired us in other ways. We have built long-lasting friendships with almost all of them. We consider ourselves blessed. Photography has changed the course of our lives
"WHEN JORGE AND I STARTED DATING, HE KEPT TELLING ME TO SHOOT. I FOUGHT HIM ON IT FOR A LONG TIME UNTIL ONE DAY I MOVED ON FROM THE STAGE AND FOUND MYSELF NEEDING A NEW CREATIVE OUTLET." - ABEL CRUZ
#21 2017 WIREMAG.COM 17
RC: What is your current struggle? JF: Once upon a time, if you wanted beautiful images you hired a photographer, someone who has studied and honed their craft. Now you just pick up your phone, pop a filter on the image and voila! The more technology, the less value would-be-clients see in hiring a professional. We have been so lucky in that aspect though. Through our people skills, out of the box thinking and our ability to connect and deliver with our clients, we can proudly say that our studio is thriving. Ten years now and counting. RC: Where do you see Photo Studio Miami in the next five years? JF: Global. Our goal is to be a one-stop shop that works with a network of creatives. We are already working on a core team that makes the impossible possible and a menu of talent for our clients to choose from. Photo Studio Miami is more than a studio. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? JF: Family supports one another. Pats you on the back when you're down, pushes you when you think there's nothing more to give and inspires you to soar. Wire Magazine has taken us in and officially made us family. We are forever grateful for the platform you provide for us and the unconditional love. Words could never express the gratitude in our hearts. For those of you who would like to meet us and brainstorm together, you can reach us through our website, www.photostudiomiami.com or on Facebook. It would be our pleasure to be part of the history of you. Thank you everyone for your love and support. Thanks to you, we are living our dreams.

Wire Magazine sat down with Dane Steele Green of Steele Luxury Travel, our travel columnist, to discuss the Life Ball, available travel options and what to expect at Europe's party of the year. Michael W. Sasser: Tell our readers who might not know, what the Life Ball is. Dane Steele Green: The Life Ball is the most unique destination charity event that is held annually in Vienna's City Hall. The Life Ball raises major Euros in an effort to fund the education and awareness of HIV and AIDS around the world. It is an event that attracts celebrities, nightlife personalities, fashion moguls and all other types of creative human beings. Each year, there is a special theme to the event. Life Ball ticket holders have the chance to wear black tie or dress in creative costumes according to the theme.
ment in the Life Ball requires our full attention on the ground during the weekend extravaganza. Our guests are welcome to explore Vienna on their own during their time in the stunning city. Of course, we are glad to set up a tour guide or any other travel services in advance for Steele life ballers. MWS: How can you help travelers extend their stay in Europe beyond the Life Ball? DSG: We work with every single Steele Traveler on a personal level. If guests prefer to extend their stay in Europe or beyond, we will most certainly arrange a full, customized luxury travel experience just for them. MWS: What should potential travelers expect from the Life Ball? DSG: No expectations, just believe me, it will be one of the top experiences of their lives. MWS: Share with readers more about the setting – Vienna. DSG: The city of Vienna is beautiful, classy and is maintained to pristine condition. The sense of history, art and music fill the streets of this super chic European city. There is a strong gay culture and the city flips a switch to another level during the Life Ball! MWS: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DSG: We have less than nine spots remaining for the group package. Interested readers should contact Steele Travel at 646.688.2274 to learn more about this unique travel experience, as there are many unique and exclusive factors to this package that can only be articulated via the telephone.
MWS: What does being the exclusive U.S. travel partner for the Life Ball mean? DSG: Eight years ago, I heard about the Life Ball and its mission. The glamour, jet set, mission and unique experience this incredible event offers immediately piqued my interest. There are distinct synergies between the ethos of Steele Travel and the Life Ball, and soon, a match was made. We are proud to be the official and exclusive partner for Life Ball ticket sales for the U.S. market. While tickets are extremely difficult to obtain, Steele is your simple connection. We are honored to work with the Life Ball and be involved in such an important charity. MWS: How did you feel when Steele Luxury Travel was again selected for this honor? DSG: I felt honored, excited and can't wait to see what magical and sexy production they put on this year! Steele is also proud to donate time and travel services to secure the celebrity and VIP travels for guests to Vienna, which helps support this wonderful charity. MWS: Tell Wire Magazine readers about the packages you have available for the Life Ball. DSG: Our all-inclusive weekend packages start at just â‚Ź3,100 per person and are of limited availability. To learn more and secure your spot to this year's event, please email Steele Luxury Travel at info@steeletravel.com or call 646.688.2274. MWS: What is not included, for which potential travelers should prepare? TOP TRAX By DJ FR8-O
SENSE8 IONAL SOUNDTRACK nless you've been blocked from any kind of social media over the last couple of years, you may have heard of a little sci-fi show that's been buzzing around called Sense8. The Netflix streaming series follows eight strangers from different parts of the world that suddenly become mentally and emotionally linked to each other. Sounds pretty basic, but this is no ordinary sci-fi show. Unlike the genre's more notorious concoctions that focus on planetary domination or battles among the stars, Sense8 tackles real world subjects that hit closer to home and affect all of us; themes such as politics, sexuality, gender identity, family and religion. After its first season aired, the show won a GLADD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series for its impeccable depiction of LGBTQ characters, which included a closeted Mexican actor played by a smokin' hot Miguel Ángel Silvestre and a transgender hacktivist from San Francisco portrayed by transgender actress/model Jamie Clayton.
I'll do my best not to give away any spoilers here (but I'm not making any promises). Right off the bat, the first episode fades up on one of the show's signature montages set to Avicii's sultry rendition of Nina Simone's 1965 classic "Feeling Good." As our eyes take in the delicious candy that slowly unfolds on the screen one episode at a time, our ears take in sublime notes from Bon Iver's "Holocene," Emmit Fenn's "Painting Greys" and Gert Taberner's "I Need" underlining the most heartbreaking moments. More dramatically intense scenes call for equally dramatic soundscapes, like Seinabo Sey's "Pistols at Dawn" or Jetta's "I'd Love to Change the World."
It's not all doom and gloom all the time though. In between dealing with their own personal dramas and their collective enemies, our heroes still find time to party together the only way eight psychically-connected strangers separated by thousands of miles can – through a worldwide rave set to a mash-up of Steve Aoki & Shaun Frank's "Home We'll Go" and Just a Band's "Huff + Puff." The biggest celebratory moment (OK, spoiler alert) happens mid-season at the center of Having already binged my way through season São Paulo Pride, and appropriately set to Otto Knows' "Back Where I Belong;" a tear-evoking 2 in less than 24 hours, I can honestly say that scene that will no doubt earn the show even more LGBTQ awards than last year. With so many the music – like the show itself – has only gotten popular artists feeding us new material on a weekly basis, it's easy to miss out on amazing mubetter. If you have yet to experience this life-giv- sic from those who may not have the luxury of billion-dollar labels pushing them past the digital ing gift to your TV, or you just haven't had a velvet ropes. Fortunately there are still shows like Sense8 that believe beauty comes in all colors, chance to catch up on the sophomore season, ethnicities, genders, sexualities and sounds, and isn't afraid to show it.

However, there's a ninth series regular that also brings these characters together throughout every episode – the music. As diverse as its characters and the global locations where Sense8 is filmed, its soundtrack features artists from all over the world, giving the scenes extra depth and reminding us that there is actually music beyond Beyoncé. As we got to know our heroes in season one, we celebrated their joy through dance tracks like Dash Berlin's "World Falls Apart" (featuring Jonathan Mendelsohn) and we felt their pain and struggles through somber ballads and haunting covers of "Mad World" by Marius Furche and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Antony & The Johnsons. Nothing was more captivating or more spot-on though, than the visual montage that unfolded to the sound of 4 Non Blondes' iconic anthem "What's Up?"
