Therefore, on behalf of Wire Magazine and our LGBTQ community and Miami Beach taxpayers I call upon mayoral candidates Michael Grieco and Dan Gelber – both former prosecutors – to commit to the following: advocating for a thorough investigation and support for any and all inquiries into the World OutGames Miami disaster; communicating openly the results of said investigations with the public; supporting an audit and an explanation of where the City of Miami Beach funds granted to WorldOut Games Miami went and what kind of tracking and supervision of these funds was in place, or wasn't in place; supporting reform in city hall to prevent future taxpayer fiascoes such as this one; and holding any parties responsible for incompetence or worse. The World OutGames Miami may have left our beautiful shores, but what happened must not be forgotten or swept under the rug. It is high time our community stands out against those who use their positions in any non-profit LGBTQ organization to benefit themselves at the expense of others. Clearly, many people in our city, and many of the thousands of athletes who traveled to Miami for the OutGames, are beyond pissed off and speaking their mind. Just take a look at Facebook and some of the comments directed at OutGames CEO Ivan Cano, and you will notice that people are not playing. Instead, they are demanding answers and want to know where all the money given to this non-profit organization went, and why the games were cancelled at the last minute. They are also very upset at the black eye actions of Cano and the rest of the OutGames’ "lack of" leadership caused our beloved hometown on the international world stage. What happened was a huge embarrassment that left many people upset, bewildered and ruined South Florida’s chances to host World Pride.

he LGBTQ community has so many faces, not to mention voices. One of those voices belongs to Mila Jam, a transgender pop singer who's been blowing up YouTube with fearless club tracks like "Masters of the Universe" and "Warrior," sultry vibes like "Cola" and her latest triumph, "Faces" – a ballad inspired by and dedicated to the LGBTQ community and the beauty found in its diversity. Mila will be performing her new track plus some favorites this Friday, June 9 at Score. As she prepares to give us "Face" at her Miami debut, we had a little kiki to talk about her journey as a transgender artist, her new track and what she's got planned for us this weekend.

DF: It used to be nearly impossible for open LGBTQ artists to break into the mainstream. That's changing, but do you think it's changing fast enough? MJ: The mainstream is not the same way it was 20 years ago. Everything is direct to consumer and user based because of the Internet. Things do change, but do they ever change fast enough for us? I just continue to be me. I would waste my life away waiting for some things to change. Eventually, they'll catch on!
DF: "Faces" is such a powerful anthem. Was it your intention to write a song with such a strong message or did it just happen that way? MJ: Most definitely my intention. THE SILK ROAD ON THE ROAD AGAIN
ust saying the term "the Silk Road" conjures up images of far-off and fabulous places just shy of pure myth. Actually a system of routes over land and sea, the Road was the interstate highway system of its time, linking cities and nations that were legendary in the minds of most, save a few hardy merchants. Beginning in the imperial Chinese city of Xian, the Silk Road then shot off in different directions; the "main" stretch wound its way from China through the Middle East and all the way to Constantinople (Istanbul), with off-ramps leading to India, Africa, Korea, Japan, and Indonesia. It was a big deal. And it still is. It’s not quite as busy as it was back in the day, but the Silk Road is still very much alive, and the cities along its routes are still bustling with the same goods as they were 1,000 years ago, silk being just one.
Gold, silver, spices, carpets, glass, art, and ideas all sloshed back and forth along the road, and they still do. In other words, if you take a trip along the road today, you will do what you would have done 1,000 years ago: shop. Empires came and went, but the Silk Road remained. Once you get into Central Asia, you can see an obvious hybridization of influences from East and West that became its own "thing." Silk Road cities like Merv, Tashkent and Samarkand were some of the first places in world where multiculturalism was the way to go. It’s also about history, culture, archaeology, and lot and lots of other horizon-broadening experiences, but it is also an exercise in planning. The only way to truly experience the Silk Road is to travel along a good portion of
its length. In the day, that meant a two-year trip. Modernity reduces that time drastically, but also adds a new hitch. Today the Road runs through several different countries, some of whom don’t like each other: Turkey, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iraq, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and finally China (and that’s just the main route). Some of these countries are perfectly cool to visit, like China; some you need to watch your Ps and Qs, like Tajikistan, and others are just plain bonkers, like Afghanistan. "Winging it" is not going to serve you well here. Best to take a tour. The DJ has to fill a room, read the audience and give them what they want, reflecting the crowd. It's obviously worked for Montanez. The international DJ/producer is considered one of the top DJs in Mexico. Under a decade in the industry, he has performed in some of the best nightclubs and at some of the best parties, from Australia to Panama, and from Los Angeles to New York. Wire Magazine caught up with Montanez to discuss his career and plans for the new pool party. Michael W. Sasser: Where are you originally from and where do you live? DJ Jesus Montanez: I was born in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. I currently live in L.A. and Chihuahua. MWS: Tell our readers about your background. JM: I grew up in Cuauhtémoc, a very small city in Mexico. I graduated from La Salle University in my hometown, where I obtained my degree in Industrial Design Engineering. From a small age, I was interested in music. When I was 14 years old, I purchased my first set of turntables, I studied and learned the theory of how it all worked and little by little I developed my abilities as a DJ. MWS: What song or songs from your childhood do you most vividly remember? JM: "Better off alone" by Alice Deejay, "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" by Eiffel 65 and "Zombie Nation" by Kernkraft 400. MWS: Who was your inspiration to get into this field? JM: Joris Voorn. MWS: Describe your particular style. JM: My favorite genre is house. I love high-energy music filled with feeling, and, of course, I like to incorporate my Mexican heritage in my music style.

MWS: How do you prepare to entertain international audiences? JM: I do some research on the preferred musical styles that drive the place I will visit. Then, according to the research, I choose a repertoire to best fit that audience, always keeping my particular style. MWS: How is the DJ scene different in Mexico than it is in the U.S.? JM: The music scene changes notably between cities, whether in Mexico or the U.S. Each place has a very different audience and that is the challenge of being a DJ: to unfold and perform my job in a perfect way, while finding mutual harmony between my sound and the audience.
