KANSAS CITY

IN THE HEARTLAND

K, I know what you are thinking: "Kansas City?" Too red, too rural, too religious – that's the stereotype of the Midwest. And for the most part, you would not be so far off. Take a look and any electoral map and every square-state is a forbiddingly gory shade of red. But, just for giggles, take a closer look. Bobbing like a blue cork in a red sea, Kansas City (the Missouri one), is an island of gay-friendly sanity in an otherwise freakish landscape. No less than 10 gay clubs call the town home, and the city went through a major renaissance a decade ago to the point Conde Nast Traveler and Thrillist.com today both list the city as one of the great unknown must-dos of the United States. So, if Midwestern niceness and cornfed farm boys do it for you, read on.

Best place to stay? That's the Hotel Sorella, arguably the prestige address of town. Best time to visit? The first Friday of every month; "First Friday" is a monthly event that turns all of Kansas City into one big block party. Best food to sample? BBQ; it may not look it, but Kansas City is pretty much the capital of the cuisine. Ask a Kansas Citian what they are loyal to more, barbecue or the Royals, and you pretty much are asking for someone to will themselves into a stroke. It would be a bit of a stretch to equate Kansas City with, say, Palm Springs or Key West when it comes to the LGBTQ population, but let's be honest: Kansas City isn't trying to be either Palm Springs or Key West. Rather, it is the gay capital of the Great Plains, and doing so on its own terms. And rather successfully, I

might add. Missie B's, two stories of dance floors and drag theater, is the queen of the countryside, but supporting players like Sidekicks and the 303 Bistro create a richly diverse scene that is pervasive to the point you can plant a big ol' smacker on your boyfriend and not even ripple the local waters. Of course, there are other sites and sights. Check out Union Station for the science center, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum for the art. In the basement of the Reiger Hotel is Manifesto, a reservation-by-text-only watering hole that is one of the best cocktail bars on the planet. Hit it first and you are pretty much assured a great night out. Midwestern niceness goes only so far... For more info, go to visitkc.com.

YOU MATTER AND SO DOES YOUR HEALTH

That’s why starting and staying on HIV-1 treatment is so important.

WHAT IS DESCOVY®?

DESCOVY is a prescription medicine that is used together with other HIV-1 medicines to treat HIV-1 in people 12 years and older. DESCOVY is not for use to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 infection. DESCOVY combines 2 medicines into 1 pill taken once a day. Because DESCOVY by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1, it must be used together with other HIV-1 medicines.

DESCOVY does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses, you must keep taking DESCOVY. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

What is the most important information I should know about DESCOVY? DESCOVY may cause serious side effects: • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. DESCOVY is not approved to treat HBV. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV and stop taking DESCOVY, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking DESCOVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health. What are the other possible side effects of DESCOVY? Serious side effects of DESCOVY may also include: • Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking DESCOVY. • Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. Your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking DESCOVY if you develop new or worse kidney problems. • Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being

more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. • Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. • Bone problems, such as bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. The most common side effect of DESCOVY is nausea. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or don’t go away. What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking DESCOVY? • All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection. • All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Other medicines may affect how DESCOVY works. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist. Ask your healthcare provider if it is safe to take DESCOVY with all of your other medicines. • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if DESCOVY can harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking DESCOVY. • If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Please see Important Facts about DESCOVY, including important warnings, on the following page.

Ask your healthcare provider if an HIV-1 treatment that contains DESCOVY® is right for you.

PUBLISHER'S CORNER STANDING UP TO THE BULLY IN THE WHITE HOUSE I start my Publisher's Corner this week expressing my outrage at Donald Trump's latest Twitter bullying episodes. What a piece of work this inhabitant of the White House has truly turned out to be. Trump talking about grabbing a woman's p*ssy has proven to have been a clear indicator of what to expect when he became president. It's outrageous that a 71-year-old overweight man who dyes his hair blonde and paints himself orange is again criticizing a woman for her physical appearance. Mr. Trump, "Stop wasting our nation's time bullying people and inciting violence against the media and get your president's work done. You wanted a 'temporary' 90-day Muslim ban to work out a policy, yet three months came and went – plus additional time – and you have still not done nothing besides your original ban. If you put as much time into our nation's pressing priorities as you do into tweeting stupid and outrageous insults directed at journalists who point out your repeated lies, you may actually come up with some policies and address some of your empty promises. The job of president is to handle the nation's business, not a Twitter handle. Stop being therealdonaldtrump and thefakedonaltrump and get to work!"

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL'S OVO

TO WOW SOUTH FLORIDA By Michael W. Sasser Photos courtesy of Cirque du Soleil

irque du Soleil is returning to South Florida this month, and will present its production of OVO in Miami and Broward County. OVO, meaning "egg" in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual. The cast of OVO is comprised of 50 performing artists from 12 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. One highlight of OVO is the stunning Flying Act in which a group of scarabs soar high above the stage, from both edges to the middle landing on a platform. OVO takes to the stage at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, July 13-23 and AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami, July 28-30. More information and tickets are available at www.cirquedusoleil.com/ovo.

"THE HIGH ACROBATIC LEVEL AND THE VARIETY OF THE ACROBATICS ACTS REALLY MAKE THIS SHOW ONE OF A KIND!" - EMERSON NEVES

12 WIREMAG.COM #27 2017

Wire Magazine caught up with OVO's artistic director and head coach to discuss the production and what audiences have in store for them.

TIM BENNETT, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Michael W. Sasser: Tell our readers about your diverse career, to date. Tim Bennett: I started my career in New York as an actor/dancer/singer, mostly in musical theater. I worked theater, TV, and film in NYC and LA. After about 15 years as a performer, I started to become interested in directing. I wanted to have a larger role in the storytelling, and have more collaborative interaction with the artistic team (designers, musical directors, writers, composers, etc.), so I went back to school at NYU and got a master's degree in directing. I then began to assist a few prominent directors. Because of those experiences, I started to make connections, and then eventually was hired to direct my own shows. Because of my history and skills as a dancer, I choreographed my shows as well. After about 10 years of directing and choreographing, I began to look for more of a permanent leadership directing role. I was hired by Disney to be the resident director of the Las Vegas company of The Lion King. I moved to Las Vegas to help mount the show there, and remained with it for the full three years of its run. I discovered that I really liked living in Las Vegas, so rather than return to NYC, I stayed in Vegas and opened a production company called Second Star to the Right Productions. We did a wide range of projects from musical theater to corporate entertainment. While in Vegas, I was offered a job as entertainment director for Carnival Cruise Lines, and after a short time with Carnival, I moved to the same position with their sister company Princess Cruises. While at Princess, the job of artistic director for Cirque du Soleil opened up and I made the decision to run away with the circus! MWS: Given the diversity of your work, how do you define yourself professionally – if you do? TB: I'm a director/choreographer, who also works as an artistic director, and producer. MWS: What brought you to Cirque du Soleil? TB: I saw my first Cirque show on the Santa Monica Pier back in the early 1990s and absolutely fell in love with it. The wild imagination that spawned the costumes, music, makeup, and Cirque environment, as well as the incredible acrobatics, blew my mind. I thought that it

was one of the most creative shows that I had ever seen, and thought to myself "I really want to work with this company." At the time, I was a performer but I had no acrobatic skills, so there wasn't a place for me. When I got to Las Vegas with The Lion King, I was surrounded by Cirque shows, and my passion to work for Cirque was reignited. My job at The Lion King was very similar to what I do for Cirque, and when The Lion King closed, I reached out to Cirque right away. MWS: What were your initial impressions of OVO? TB: I was happy to see that it was very much in the spirit of the early Cirque tent shows. And I was also excited to see that it had a very bright, energetic and playful tone. That combination makes it unique among the Cirque shows. MWS: Describe OVO to readers who might not be familiar with it. TB: OVO takes place in a colony of insects. Wildly re-imagined, it is a world of bright colors and upbeat Brazilian music. It is a story of inclusion, in which the comfortable colony is disrupted by a foreigner (that's even the name of the character) who is very different from the members of the colony. They initially reject him for his differences, but throughout the show they realize that he is actually much more similar to them than he is different, and by the end, they embrace him. And along the way there is a great boy-bug gets girl-bug, boy-bug loses girl-bug, and then‌ well you'll have to see the show to learn what happens. The level of acrobatic acts and skills is through the roof. We have some of the top circus artists in the world, working alongside Olympic gymnasts and world champion acrobats in some acts that are pretty unique. It's not a Cirque show that you've ever seen before. MWS: How has the experience of working for Cirque been? TB: It's been great! It's what I had hoped for and more. The level of professionalism and talent is unmatched. The free expression of creativity in the shows, and the permission to grow and explore is amazing. I'm astounded by the talent around me, and feel privileged to come to work every day. The days are long, the pace is fast on tour, and the work is frequently challenging, but the rewards (artistic and personal) are as good it gets. MWS: What was the biggest challenge for you in being artistic director of OVO? TB: The drive and desire to improve, create, and grow among the team is huge. For me as well. The biggest challenge is to find time to fulfill that desire for everyone. Because we pack up, move, remount, and perform a full schedule every week, there isn't time to put in all of the great creative ideas that everyone has.

"OVO IS A WONDERFUL REPRESENTATION OF THE CULTURE AND WORLD OF CIRQUE DU SOLEIL ITSELF. IT'S A STORY OF INCLUSION, AND INCLUSION IS ONE OF THE GREATEST STRENGTHS AT CIRQUE." - TIM BENNETT

#27 2017 WIREMAG.COM 15

MWS: What would surprise people to know about the work that goes into a production of OVO? TB: It would likely surprise them to know how much time the artists put into training. All of them train their acts every day, on top of their regular intense gym workouts. On this crazy schedule, they still stick to very disciplined training schedules. People might also be surprised at the hours necessary to mount the show. Many of the technicians and staff work 60-70 hours a week. The good news is that it's a labor of love (truly) and that all of us are here because we'd rather be doing this than anything else. MWS: What is your personal favorite moment in OVO? TB: Oh god, that's like asking me to pick my favorite child! I'd say that my favorite moment is when the lights start to go down at the top of the show: the red spider and crickets are on top of their plant perches swinging around over top of the giant egg, and I hear the opening announcement signaling the start of the show. I get goosebumps every night knowing what's about to come! MWS: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? TB: OVO is a wonderful representation of the culture and world of Cirque du Soleil itself. It's a story of inclusion, and inclusion is one of the greatest strengths at Cirque. Our production consists of a troupe of over 100 artists, technicians, and staff from 21 different countries working together as storytellers to amaze and delight audiences. We are a mix of many languages, skin colors, sexual orientations, religions, and cultures – French, Russian, American, Ukrainian, Brazilian, British‌ and many more. We work as a team without regard to politics or borders, and the trust between us has to be uncompromising. If we can all work together at the circus to do what we do, there is no reason why others around the world can't do the same.

16 WIREMAG.COM #27 2017

EMERSON NEVES, HEAD COACH Michael W. Sasser: How did you end up transitioning from diving to acrobatics and the arts? Emerson Neves: As a diver, I started to do diving shows in Europe. During one of my contracts, I was replacing a diver that was going to Cirque du Soleil for a general formation of O, the water show in Vegas. He suggested to me to record a demo and submit it to Cirque. At the time, I wanted to focus more on the other job I had in Brazil as a physiotherapist and also focus on my boyfriend who was living there. That friend on tour with me made a video of me and sent it to Cirque without letting me know! Not long after, Cirque invited me for an audition, which I ended up doing and succeeding! After a while they asked me to go to their head offices in Montreal for a "general training/formation" for this same show, O. Funny enough, after this formation, they didn't have a position available for O but they did have a contract for another show called Saltimbanco. I started to work on the show as an acrobat for the Russian Swing act and stayed there for seven years, until the show closed. MWS: Which aspect of your career to date do you enjoy most? EN: The most rewarding part for me is to see an artist perform an acrobatic element for the very first time. It's great to now be able to accompany them in that process. MWS: What made Cirque du Soleil appealing to you? EN: When I first saw a show from Cirque du Soleil, it was like being transported to a different world, a place that I had never been before. I told myself that I wanted to be part of that magical world. MWS: What attracted you to OVO? EN: As I was working as a head coach for another show company, I was approached by a senior head coach from Cirque du Soleil who asked me if I would like to join the OVO team. It has been great to work for Cirque as an artist and it's an honor to now be part of it as a head coach! MWS: Describe OVO in three words. EN: Magical, surprising and happy. MWS: What should audience members anticipate from their OVO experience? EN: The high acrobatic level and the variety of the acrobatics acts really make this show one of a kind!

MWS: What do you hope audience members walk away from the show thinking or feeling? EN: I hope they walk away from our show full of joy and having in mind that dreams can come true! MWS: What's your favorite moment or sequence in OVO, and why? EN: I love the Wall Act – which is a mix of trampoline, tumbling and rock climbing – because it's a great combination of different skills and characters in one act. I also really like this part of the show we call the 'Banquet,' where all our 'bugs' from the show come on stage to celebrate their diversity and differences in this big final party! MWS: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? EN: When I got to Cirque du Soleil, it made me understand for the very first time that it was OK to be myself and that people should respect that, no matter what. It made me understand that being gay was OK, that there was nothing wrong with it. For the first time in my life I felt normal and supported. For sure, that's what made me fall more in love with this company and my co-workers.

What is TRUVADA for PrEP?

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: ® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. ® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. ® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must continue to use safer sex practices. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. ® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. ® Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? ® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. ® If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. ® All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. ® If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

IT'S SET TO SNOW IN MIAMI

espite what the thermometer might read, it is set to snow in Miami. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County presents the return of Slava's Snowshow, a critically-acclaimed and timeless theatrical spectacle often described as a cross between Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group, as its marquee presentation for summer 2017. After two record-breaking runs in 2008 and 2013, creator and renowned international artist, Slava Polunin, and his talented cast of clowns return to Miami to wow fans with their magical show. Slava's Snowshow is the tour de force of Polunin, a vast, visionary show rich in emotion and mood. Slava was born in a small town called Novosil, in the Orlovsky region of Russia. Following school, he moved to Leningrad where he began to study the art of mime on his own while attending the Institute of Culture in Leningrad. Through comic physical/visual pieces he created with his onstage partner, A. Skvorcov, Slava Polunin quickly became an icon of Russian culture.

"IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO EXPLAIN EVEN TO THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN IT. THE THING IS... IT IS A PERFORMANCE WITHOUT BORDERS. IT DOES EVERYTHING WITHOUT SAYING A WORD... THERE ARE THINGS THAT WORDS CAN'T EXPRESS." - SLAVA POLUNIN

In 1991, Polunin closed his Licedei Theater and started to work on a new, mainly solo, work. Snowshow was born in 1993 and has never stopped touring the world since. It has been performed in hundreds of cities, over thousands of shows, to millions of people. Over the years, the show itself, as well as its creator, have been presented with approximately 20 of the world's most prestigious theatrical awards, including the Lawrence Olivier, Drama Desk, Triumph and Golden Nose awards.

Slava Polunin is much more than an actor and director of theater. He is also an artistic director and producer of full-scale, epic size events and festivals who is constantly In the early '80s, Polunin created his own leg- gathering and uniting hundreds of artists, across disciplines, to jointly create masendary theater company, Licedei. Wire Magazine sat down with Slava for a few questions about Snowshow and its desired impact on audiences. Michael W. Sasser: How do you define yourself as a performer? Slava Polunin: I prefer to call myself a clown, but the definition is different when performing for kids. MWS: What was the earliest influence on your career choice? SP: I saw Charlie Chaplin in The Kid on a New Year's Eve. My mother turned the TV on and I remember being so surprised that people liked it! MWS: Describe Slava's Snowshow. SP: It's impossible to explain to those who have not seen it. The thing is... it is a performance without borders. It does everything without saying a word... there are things that words can't express. MWS: What role does snow play in the show, and how does it work? SP: Well, I was born in Russia and snow is the biggest thing there to a kid. It's the biggest joy. On the other hand, snow can cover everything in our lives and make it look beautiful. It's also very tragic. Snow is very close to death. Photo by WorldRedEye.com

MWS: What is the greatest challenge in this production? SP: I don't see challenges... I see joy. It is all joy. MWS: What is your personal favorite part of Slava's Snowshow? SP: Oh, I can't answer that. It's like choosing your favorite child.

MWS: Who is the target audience for Slava's Snowshow? SP: There is absolutely no target audience. Everyone can enjoy it. Some people have come to see the show 10, 20 times. What's most important is not what's going on onstage. It's the atmosphere. MWS: What do you hope audience members walk away thinking or feeling after seeing Slava's Snowshow? SP: The most important thing is for every adult to remember the joy of being a child. MWS: How do you characterize the theme of Slava's Snowshow? SP: There are so many! There are like 10 layers! MWS: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? SP: Of course! I want people to come and see the show!
