CHARLIE CINNAMON: CELEBRATING A BELOVED ONE OF A KIND GENTLEMAN

LEGENDARY PRESS AGENT

f you knew Charlie Cinnamon, you know he does not need an introduction. But if you never met Charlie, you have a very unique opportunity to learn about the life of an extraordinary human being, thanks to a very special museum exhibition. I will never forget when one of the speakers at his funeral mentioned that Charlie had the gift of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. Everyone in the synagogue looked around as we all, together, realized that Charlie had made each one of us feel like we were the most important person in the world. I had tears streaming down my face the day I learned Charlie passed away. To this day, I miss him dearly every time I go to the Arsht Center or the Broward Center and Charlie is not there to greet me for a Broadway show, a symphony concert or other arts and culture events he was the press agent for. He, the consummate press agent, I the publisher and writer, who learned so much from a true legend.

Thanks to the exhibition press release, I learned that Charlie hosted private "record album listening parties" (code for secret gatherings for LGBT people who had no safe public spaces to socialize at the time). Charlie would send out invitations to his gay friends, coded as "Come hear the new album by Ella," and they knew a grand night was awaiting them all. In 1988, Charlie brought Elizabeth Taylor to Miami Beach for the first Community Alliance Against AIDS fundraiser, held at the Fontainebleau, which raised $2.5 million for AIDS research â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at that time the largest amount ever raised in the U.S. in a single night at a fundraiser for charity.

I miss you Charlie, but you live on in my heart. Today, I get to invite everyone to celebrate the extraordinary life of a real gentleman by visiting the wonderful exhibition, Charlie Cinnamon: Legendary Press Agent, on display at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU until September 16. The exhibition is full of interesting facts about Charlie, beautiful photographs and special mementos.

I sat down with Charlie's close friend Richard Jay-Alexander and Jewish Museum Executive Director Susan Gladstone to preview the exhibition and remember a great man. Rafa Carvajal: How did you get to know Charlie Cinnamon? Richard Jay-Alexander: I first met Charlie back in 1977. I was an assistant company manager and an assistant press agent for the Tony Award winning revival of Porgy and Bess, produced by Sherwin M. Goldman and Houston Grand Opera and it was about to go on tour. It was scheduled to play in South Florida, and everyone wanted me to meet "Charlie Cinnamon," who was the "it" person in the press world down here. We met and the rest, as they say, is history. Friends ever since and a mentor till the very last day. RC: What do you think made Charlie such a special person? RJA: There are so many things that made the guy so very special. It's hard to describe, but Charlie's true gift was communicating with people and making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. RC: Why did Charlie make such a difference in so many people's lives during his lifetime? RJA: Charlie had so many friends, acquaintances and business relationships and nurtured all of them. He was always there for people and got things done. RC: Tell us about the special relationship that Charlie had with Elizabeth Taylor? RJA: It was just thatâ&#x20AC;Ś special. Elizabeth Taylor was the biggest "get" anyone could get as a clientâ&#x20AC;Ś and he got her. They remained friends and he even toured with her for The Little Foxes. Wait till you see the cufflinks she gave him!

RC: Why did you think it was so important to put together this exhibition about Charlie? RJA: It suddenly hit us. His nephew Stanley, Stanley's wife Elaine, Manny and I, as we were packing up the house. We just knew this stuff had to be seen.

Susan Gladstone: The mission of the museum is to collect, preserve and showcase the history of Jews in the state of Florida from 1763 to the present; to teach that the immigrant experience as evidenced through our permanent historical collection reveals universal themes relevant to anyone, and to highlight accomplishments made by members of the Jewish community that have positively influenced everyone.

RC: Why did the museum decide to showcase the Charlie Cinnamon exhibition? RJA: There are way too many to get into, but probably the various New Year's Eves with mutual friends. Always warm and wonderful. RC: What do you hope visitors take away from seeing this exhibition honoring Charlie Cinnamon? RJA: Gosh! They'll see what a life fulfilled looks like. A blessing. RC: In your opinion, what is Charlie's legacy? RJA: Decades of devotion to South Florida and being remembered by all those he touched. RC: What do you believe Charlie is saying about this wonderful museum exhibit as he smiles at us from heaven? RJA: I believe he's actually making it all happen from above. It's everything he believes inâ&#x20AC;Ś his faith and education. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about Charlie? RJA: I just hope everyone will take a little trip to the museum this summer and visit this very special exhibit. I'll be going multiple times, for sure!

RC: Why do people need to come see the Charlie Cinnamon exhibition? SG: Charlie lived an extraordinary life and, in his own quiet and dignified manner, made a

huge contribution to the world in which he lived. He is a true role model for all. RC: What are your favorite three items in the exhibition? SG: Personally, I am very moved by all the items Charlie kept and treasured from his service in the army during WWII. He helped liberate a concentration camp, and while he didn't ever talk about it, he treasured all of his medals and a wonderful letter that he received directly from General Patton. I also love the photos of him with Elizabeth Taylor at a large press conference. While we know that he orchestrated this entire scenario, he is seen beaming in the background, while allowing Elizabeth Taylor to shine. He knew how to get his stars the attention they deserved, but he himself was always very humble. The cufflinks she gave him, made from her own earrings, are beautiful. There are three portraits of Charlie, each quite different in character, but each indicative of part of Charlie's personality. I like them all. RC: What was the most interesting thing you learned about Charlie from the exhibition? SG: I learned about his army experience, as mentioned above. I learned how many, many people, far more than I had anticipated, loved, respected and wanted to honor Charlie. The emotional outpouring from the community has been amazing.

DOMINIQUE JACKSON, CELEBRITY HOST Rafa Carvajal: What are you looking forward to the most about being the celebrity host at Score's 20th anniversary party? Dominique Jackson: Well, apart from being in Miami and having a blast, I'm most looking forward to seeing people celebrate such a monumental occasion! To be of LGBTQ identification and operate a business that brings folks joy for 20 years is a testament to resilience and perseverance! RC: What would you like to say to your fans coming to see you at Score's 20th anniversary party? DJ: I never look at people as fans. I see them as the people who help build my career! I'm looking forward to thanking as many of them as possible, for supporting and loving my journey as some have known me since my pageant and showgirl days! RC: Why do you think it is important for members of the LGBTQ community to come together in clubs where we feel comfortable being ourselves? DJ: The ability to gather in a space with folks that are just like you and understand your journey through experience is cathartic! Dancing is a part of the human spirit and, in my opinion, it can be the best stress relief. In a world where one is constantly fighting to prove that they matter, a space that allows one to be free is extremely important.

RC: What do you enjoy the most about being a model? DJ: I love fashion! I love knowing the story behind a designer's creation and, most of all, Muva lives to slay the catwalk! RC: Tell us about your experience starring in Oxygen's GLAAD Award winning reality docuseries Strut, executive produced by Whoopi Goldberg and Tom Leonardis. DJ: Strut was amazing! Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Leonardis and the team at 44 Blue Productions and Oxygen, took great care of my husband and I. I've idolized Whoopi Goldberg from childhood, and her believing enough in us to back us and executive produce gave me the strength to continue to live in my truth! It meant that I was seen and respected as a human being. It meant that people were listening and wanting to make a change toward respect and inclusivity. RC: Why do you think your LGBTQ community activism is so important? DJ: It is extremely important to continue LGBTQ activism because people need to see themselves and know that they can be destined to have a tomorrow. Those of us who can speak up, should, if we have the means and if it is safe for us to do so. It is important because we must be seen, we must be visible, and with this people of LGBTQ can be treated as equals across the board. From housing to healthcare and employment. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DJ: One thing I'd like folks to know, is that we must lead with kindness and the understanding that tough love is not always the answer. I'd like folks to know that we never know a person's experience and/how they got to the position they are in, so we should not judge others by our own accomplishments and our own ability to get through certain life experiences. Oh, and I am seriously not a mean person, ha-ha, I just play one on TV.

RC: How did you become an actress? DJ: I became an actor when I truly began to believe I was one! I understood that rejection was a part of the game. It took a while to comprehend that I didn't desire to be famous. My passion was in the ability to transform into another personality. To live it, breathe it, enjoy it and relay the character in a way that people would understand the character's journey. Then, I studied by the means of YouTube and the shows that I loved. I studied women like Meryl Streep, Angela Bassett, Nicole Kidman, Whoopi Goldberg, Vivica A. Fox, Gabrielle Union and saw how these women transformed to tell amazing stories and bring unique characters to life. It was only after I did this that doors miraculously began to open. RC: What else do you do besides being an actress? DJ: I am an author, advocate, activist and also a model. I self-published my autobiographical memoirs, The transsexual from Tobago (Revised), and up to last December, I was the director of programs for the trans founded and led nonprofit organization, Destination Tomorrow.

So, I'm looking forward to seeing all the guys who love to turn it out and have a great time, and celebrate Score's 20th anniversary! MB: What type of music do you like DJing the most, and why? DJAA: My sets are not standardized to a specific sound. I give them a variety, according to the crowd. At the same time, I don't lose my signature sound. I love house, I love techno, I love tech house, I love tribal. Each market is different. As I have said in the past, the crowd is what drives the night and I play for them. MB: What would you like to say to your fans coming to hear you at Score's 20th anniversary party? DJAA: It's been a while since I've played at Score, so get ready for a whole bunch of fresh new beats and an unforgettable night.

MB: What do you love most about DJing at Rafa Carvajal: What do you enjoy the most about working as a bartender at Score? Score? Charlie: Meeting different people from all over the world and making them happy. Some of DJAA: Everything. From the DJ Booth (one of them have become my very best friends. I can also express the person that I am fully, which the best ones in the country for a gay club) to is very important to me. I am very unique, ha-ha. the crowd, and the energy they all give. MB: Why do you think Score has been so popular for 20 years on South Beach? DJAA: Score is an institution in the LGBTQ house/dance community. The fact that they have stayed in business so long, speaks highly of their commitment towards their patrons. The talent they bring is always fresh and current, so I would say it is a combination of everything. I personally love it every time I go there, even if it's as a DJ or for work.

RC: Why do you prefer to be a bartender at Score, instead of at other South Beach bars or clubs? C: It is not a question of preference. It just so happens that I've worked with the same individuals for a very, very long time and we know each other very well. They have been there for me all these years nonstop. It's like a family, I don't know how else to explain it. Billy, Fabricio, Luis, Antonio Lage and JC â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we've been there all this time together. So have Jorge Fraga and Dario. Many people came and went and I love them all, but we stayed together.

RC: Why do you think it is important to have such a popular LGBTQ establishment in South Beach? C: Oh Lord, don't get me started on this one. Many gay clubs have been closing all over the country, and I don't know exactly why. This is why we need to support the places that allow MB: What do you think keeps customers, both us to be who we are, and welcome us with open arms. #supportyourlocalgayclub visitors and residents, coming back to Score year after year? DJ Smeejay: With the anniversary quickly approaching, I'm so excited to see so many wonderful friends gathering to celebrate such a wonderful occasion. The chance to DJ for a crowd like this is the icing on that anniversary cake. MB: What type of music do you like DJing the most, and why? DJS: I love to keep it light and even silly at times. To find that "guilty pleasure" track that some may not even want to admit they secretly love, and dropping it so they have no choice but to give in and cut loose is really just so rewarding. Kind of like that, "dance like nobody's watching" saying. For this earlier gathering, I want to tap into those classic house tracks that have energized not only dance floors for decades, but also catwalks and runways. Runway cocktail disco! MB: What would you like to say to your fans coming to hear you at Score's 20th anniversary party? DJS: For any fans coming to hear me, expect the perfect musical accompaniment for you to glide across the floor, cocktail in hand, nibbling on succulent bites from one of Miami's finest caterers. As the evening wears on though, don't be surprised to find yourself sweating off those nibbles. Just the idea of coming back to Score, a space that kicked off my career, thrills me beyond belief. MB: Why do you think Score has been so popular for 20 years on South Beach? DJS: The fact that this club has been synonymous with a wonderful evening out for two decades, in a town where clubs can come and go in weeks, pretty much says it all! Luis and Billy set out to build a better mousetrap and their longevity speaks for itself. A space where all feel welcome and celebrated is a rare feat, and it is this combination of making their clientele feel so appreciated that has kept the crowds coming back for more, week after week... year after year. AARON POWELL, DECORATOR Rafa Carvajal: Where do all the beautiful decorations and setup at Score come from? Aaron Powell: Our installations are a collaboration of lighting, LEDs, lasers, props, costuming, dancers, headliners and DJs from around the globe â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all coordinated by co-owner Luis Morera and I. The decor is all designed and handmade in my studio for a specific event to create a one of a kind experience. We all do our absolute best to provide a good time for everyone. RC: What is the best part of being the designer at Score? AP: The best part is, of course, seeing the customers and staff get excited and enjoy the event, while appreciating my efforts. My work comes from the heart. When I've given it my all and people express their joy, it can bring on tears of happiness. I get a little overwhelmed at times.

RC: Why do you think Score has been so popular for 20 years on South Beach? AP: Score has been the premier dance/party nightclub since the '90s. We provide top notch quality productions and entertainment with global DJs, best sounds and lights, hottest dancers and friskiest bartenders par none on the Beach. We have a family atmosphere with longtime staff and patrons that also contribute to its success. The LGBTQ community can always call Score home! RC: What is your favorite celebrity moment at Score? AP: Oh wow, so many memories. Too many to choose from. I will say that every celebrity we've had as a guest has always brought me great joy and awesome memories, and will always be my favorite. RC: What do you think keeps customers, both visitors and residents, coming back to Score year after year? AP: I put it all out there for our events. We provide awesome DJs, music, lighting, talent (both local and global), and host many events and charities. We also have our stellar bartenders and staff, some of which have been there since day one and are family. Our customers are familiar faces as well, and I always enjoy seeing everyone have a good time. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about being a member of the Score family? AP: I have been with Score since its inception, literally from the ground up (there was nothing but dirt floors and a glass storefront when construction started). I have so many memories. Endless meetings at Tiramesu with George and Gary. Fights between the contractors, from the installation of the grand staircase by Frank, to 18 WIREMAG.COM #33 2018

the grand procession of the gold man down Lincoln Road â&#x20AC;&#x201C; quite the spectacle! Then fast forward to our move to Score's new home on Washington Avenue. I have been blessed to be able to create many, many memorable installations. Score has given me a sense of community. A family and platform to showcase my artistic talents, and a meeting place to see friends and family. I can't believe that 20 years have passed (I'm only 26)! I am proud and honored to be part of a great legacy, and one of the longest standing pillars of our community. Score will always be in my heart.

VIX ARAUJO, CUSTOMER Michael Bustamante: Why have you enjoyed going to Score for many years? What is so fun about it? Vix Araujo: With the uttermost sincerity, the enjoyment comes from the warmth of the staff. They remember, appreciate, and will always make anyone feel like a part of the Score family. This is one of the main reasons everyone keeps coming back. Locals, tourists and even competitor bars, visit the legendary Score nightclub. MB: What has Score meant to you over the years? VA: It's become a landmark in South Beach. A place where you can come and be yourself without judgment. I feel welcomed every time. Not only that, but the music, the lights and the entertainment have evolved into futuristic elements that are way ahead of their time. I'm always impressed by how Score has evolved throughout the decades. MB: What has been your favorite Score party over the years, and why? VA: So many to name, jeez. Planeta Macho, The Lab Fridays, RAW, Urge... I could go on. But honestly, the anniversary parties are everything. You get to see everyone and I'm really excited about this year's because it's bringing back a classic element to it that's going to have everyone hashtagging everything. I can't wait!

MB: What are your thoughts on Score turning 20 this year? VA: Wow, just wow. It takes a lot of time and dedication for someone to run an establishment for this long with the economy, hurricanes, location changes, local bar drama; but guess what, Score is still here. I think Score has gained its respect from the community because it's one of those establishments that remain humble and stand out on their own. I'm very proud to sometimes be called an honorary Score family member. MB: Why do you think tourists and residents, both gay and straight, have enjoyed going to Score over the last 20 years? VA: The management, period, and I can name them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Luis, Billy, Fabrizio, Marco and JC â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a dynamic team. They're all very diverse and sexy, ha-ha.

RC: What are your two fondest memories at Score? LB: When Score was on Lincoln Road and the girl parties would be upstairs. At a certain point, they would open up the inside stairs and both crowds would mix. I used to love being part of that. The anniversary block parties were also a lot of fun. RC: What has been your favorite Score party over the years, and why? LB: The anniversary parties. The music is off the chain, as well as the entertainment. RC: What are your thoughts on Score turning 20 this year? LB: It's impressive. The beach has changed so much. All of the business and bars that were once on the Beach are long gone. Score has done something most bars and clubs haven't been able to do â&#x20AC;&#x201C; change with the times. It's also never gotten sleazy like other bars have become. RC: Why do you think tourists and residents, both gay and straight, have enjoyed going to Score over the last 20 years? LB: Score has a reputation of bringing in quality DJs and entertainment. THE YEAR'S SWEETEST EYE CANDY By DJ FR8-O

n just a few days, the music industry's fiercest contenders will be descending onto Radio City Music Hall for the 35th round of the MTV Video Music Awards. It'll be the twelfth time the infamous awards show will be held at the iconic venue, but if history has taught us anything, it's that this show is far from predictable. Four-time nominee Ariana Grande, triple-nominee Shawn Mendes, Logic and Ryan Tedder were recently tapped to take the stage that night, as well as this year's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient, Jennifer Lopez. As it stands, Cardi B takes the lead in nominations with ten to her name, followed by The Carters with eight, and Drake and Childish Gambino tied with seven. If these artists get their way, hip hop could be ruling the show. We'll find out on August 20th. In the meantime, here are my winning picks. BEST NEW ARTIST Bazzi Chloe x Halle Hayley Kiyoko Lil Pump Lil Uzi Vert Cardi B Last year, MTV dropped the ball by not featuring Cardi in their show. I guess they're making up for lost time now that she's become the new Nicki Minaj (sorry, Nicki). While I wasn't "Bodak Yellow's" biggest fan, the rest of her work has definitely grown on me over the past year, mainly due to her endless stream of collaborations, including those with two other fellow nominees, Bruno Mars and JLo. Leading the nominations with a grand total of ten to her name, it'll be no surprise if Cardi goes home with at least half of them.

BEST COLLABORATION The Carters - "Apeshit" Logic (ft. Alessia Cara & Khalid) - "1-800-273-8255" Jennifer Lopez (ft. DJ Khaled & Cardi B) - "Dinero" N.E.R.D & Rihanna - "Lemon" Bebe Rexha (ft. Cardi B) - "Finesse" Speaking of Bruno Mars, not only does this track ooze with '90s hip hop realness, the video homage to the TV show of the same era that helped launch the career of fellow nominee JLo (In Living Color), makes it feel like it was pulled right out of a time capsule. It seems like everything the man touches turns to 24k magic. This song is no different.

P!nk - "What About Us" Between launching a new album, touring, standing up against injustice and, let's not forget, motherhood, P!nk has been a very busy woman lately. Last year, MTV honored the diva with the Video Vanguard Award, which she accepted while sharing a heartfelt story about a moment she shared with her daughter. "We help other people to change so they can see more kinds of beauty," she explained. This anthem not only echoes that sentiment, it's a big dance-floor-filling middle finger to you-know-who. P!nk for president! BEST HIP HOP Cardi B (ft. 21 Savage) - "Bartier Cardi" The Carters - "Apeshit" J. Cole - "ATM" Migos (ft. Drake) - "Walk It Talk It" Nicki Minaj - "Chun-Li" Drake - "God's Plan" As an avid connoisseur of dance music, I'll admit that I'm not the most well-versed in this category. However, after watching this video, there was no doubt in my mind that Drake deserves it. Maybe it's the fact that it was filmed in my hometown of Miami. Maybe it's because it didn't repeat the tired old "baller in the nightclub surrounded by hoochies" cliche. OK, that sexy smile of his may have had a tiny bit to do with it, but it most definitely had a lot to do with all the real-life good deeds the rapper was performing all over the 305, and the charitable donations he made to real people in the community to the tune of $996,631.90. I'm not crying, you're crying!

BEST LATIN Daddy Yankee - "Dura" Luis Fonsi & Demi Lovato - "Échame la Culpa" Jennifer Lopez (ft. DJ Khaled & Cardi B) - "Dinero" Maluma - "Felices los 4" Shakira (ft. Maluma) - "Chantaje" J Balvin & Willy William - "Mi Gente" As a mea culpa to snubbing "Despacito" last year, MTV has finally added a long-overdue Latin category to their ever changing roster. The inaugural list features a mix of veterans like Shakira and JLo, as well as some more recent players, including the "Despacito" boys themselves Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi. As much as I love my divas, and as irresistible as Fonsi and Maluma look in their clips, the artistry and addictive hook of this one takes the prize for me. And, of course, there's also that cameo on the remix of another nominee that you may have heard of by the name of Beyoncé. #33 2018 WIREMAG.COM 23

BEST DANCE The Chainsmokers - "Everybody Hates Me" David Guetta & Sia - "Flames" Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa - "One Kiss" Marshmello (ft. Khalid) - "Silence" Zedd & Liam Payne - "Get Low" Avicii (ft. Rita Ora) - "Lonely Together" We lost a legend earlier this year, so it only seems right to honor him with this award, but this is by no means a pity vote. While the EDM icon doesn't appear in the video, his mid-tempo anthem paired with mind-blowing visual effects and Rita Ora's underrated vocals blow the competition out of the water. Hopefully, the fans who voted will agree and honor this legendary artist one last time. RIP. BEST ROCK Fall Out Boy - "Champion" Foo Fighters - "The Sky Is a Neighborhood" Linkin Park - "One More Light" Panic! at the Disco "Say Amen (Saturday Night)" Thirty Seconds to Mars - "Walk on Water" Imagine Dragons - "Whatever It Takes" It's a sad day indeed when a man has to choose between Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, Imagine Dragon's lead stud Dan Reynolds and Panic! at the Disco's Brendon Urie. What's not sad is a ripped Reynolds bouncing on screen to this mesmerizing anthem; even singing underwater. Towering over the competition at 6-foot-four, that's one tall drink of water. BEST ART DIRECTION Childish Gambino - "This Is America" (Art Director: Jason Kisvarday) J. So dropping this one into the hands of Mr. and Mrs. Beyonce (yeah I said it) is a no-brainer. Bey has always been a force to be reckoned with when it comes to pop, but ever since she surprised us with her self-titled visual album in 2013, she has proven herself time and again to be a true artist; pushing the boundaries of music and stretching the imagination every chance she gets. By weaving togethering The Louvre's classic visuals with hip hop, modern choreography and unexpected costumes, this vid is no different.

While every one of these choreographers deserve big props for their distinct work, Tayag's captured the essence of the era with classic moves like the "running man," while still giving the set a modern twist. Bruno and friends made it look so easy, I may or may not have tried busting these moves at home, but the only thing I busted was my ass. BEST DIRECTION The Carters - "Apeshit" (Director: Ricky Saix) Childish Gambino - "This Is America" (Director: Hiro Murai) Drake - "God's Plan" (Director: Karena Evans) Shawn Mendes - "In My Blood" (Director: Jay Martin) Ed Sheeran - "Perfect" (Director: Jason Koenig) Justin Timberlake (ft. Chris Stapleton) "Say Something" (Director: Arturo Perez Jr.) Although this track didn't seem to get much love on the charts – much like the rest of JT's latest album – I'm so glad the powers that be had the sense to toss it into this category. Much like Shawn Mendes' video, this was shot as one long take – no cuts and no edits. Not an easy thing to accomplish maneuvering up and down multiple floors inside a vintage atrium building, while directing two musicians and a few dozen extras and it was all done without any visual effects. There's a lot to be said for that. BEST VISUAL EFFECTS Avicii (ft. Rita Ora) - "Lonely Together" (Visual Effects: KPP) Eminem (ft. Beyoncé) - "Walk on Water" (Visual Effects: Rich Lee for Drive Studios) Ariana Grande - "No Tears Left to Cry" (Visual Effects: Vidal & Loris Paillier at BUF Paris) Kendrick Lamar & SZA - "All the Stars" w(Visual Effects: Loris Paillier at BUF Paris) Maroon 5 - "Wait" (Visual Effects: Timber) Taylor Swift - "Look What You Made Me Do" (Visual Effects: Ingenuity Studios) Since we're on the topic of visual effects, we can't have the VMAs without celebrating the real reason why we're obsessed with these clips in the first place – the eye candy! It seems like Taylor Swift has been on a mission to satisfy our sweet tooth ever since she went from country crooner to pop princess, and the visuals just keep getting bigger and better. ARTIST OF THE YEAR Camila Cabello Drake Ariana Grande Post Malone Bruno Mars Cardi B In just one short year, Cardi B has gone from the new girl on the hip hop block, to the new "it" rapper everyone wants on their record. Since her sudden debut around this time last year, she has staked her claim as a legit solo artist and paired up with a slew of other artists like Maroon 5 ("Girls Like You"), as well as other VMA nominees Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez and J Balvin, just to scratch the surface. If she keeps this up, it won't be long before we start calling her "Mrs. Worldwide." VIDEO OF THE YEAR Camila Cabello (ft. Young Thug) - "Havana" The Carters - "Apeshit" Childish Gambino - "This Is America" Ariana Grande - "No Tears Left to Cry" Bruno Mars (ft. Cardi B) - "Finesse" Drake - "God's Plan" OK, this was a really tough one. I've never been a big fan of letting political or religious messages overshadow what should be just a source of carefree entertainment. However, in this case, Drake was the only nominee who skipped all the hi-tech bells and whistles, and instead used his million-dollar budget to help an entire community in need. Everything about this video gives me all the feels. It not only shows us that the 31-year-old has a heart that's bigger than his record sales, it reminds us that even in a time when hate and injustice are springing up left and right, there are still people out there going out of their way to do some good in the world. If there's any message that this generation needs to hear now more than ever, it's this one. The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall on Monday, August 20th at 8 p.m. EST.
