PUBLISHER'S CORNER I AM VERY GRATEFUL Dear valued readers, advertising partners, family and friends, we are back! Hurricane Irma forced us to evacuate and pause the delivery of Wire Magazine for the safety of our people and their families. The Wire Magazine staff’s evacuation took us to Stuart, Orlando and even Cozumel, Mexico – on a cruise ship that sailed away from the hurricane. On behalf of myself and my staff, I want to send our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by Hurricane Irma. We wish you the best as we all recover from Irma’s aftermath and our lives return back to normal. The Wire Magazine staff is back at work on future issues to be published and distributed in print and digital format, as we do every week. I am extremely grateful that we were spared from a catastrophic direct hit by Hurricane Irma. I must confess that I feared for my life when I evacuated from my apartment on Brickell Avenue, expecting that a category 4 hurricane would cause massive destruction from winds and storm surge. I packed what I could into my SUV and headed north to Stuart, Florida with my friend Kim. We rode the storm in a very safe home near the ocean with her family and experienced hurricane winds that reached 85 miles per hour. As one of millions of Floridians who had to make last minute decisions in search of safety, I look back at this traumatic experience and I am thankful that we are ok, and that I was able to return to work publishing Wire Magazine and carrying out my duties as Chief Operating Officer of Q Link Wireless.

What is TRUVADA for PrEP?

Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?

TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: ® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. ® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. ® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must continue to use safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. ® You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. ® If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. ® To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: ® Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. ® Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. ® Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. ® Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. ® If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: ® Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.

What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: ® Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA. ® Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. ® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. ® Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? ® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. ® If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA. ® If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. ® All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. ® If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

his week's cover model comes to the pages of Wire Magazine all the way from Switzerland. Greg Carter lets his ample assets speak for him in this photo essay by acclaimed photographer and frequent Wire Magazine collaborator, David Vance. What happens when a gorgeous Swiss real estate agent intersects with a world-famous photographer who happens to specialize in capturing the essence of male sensuality? That's what we have in store for our readers as you peruse the photos of Greg Carter in this week's photographic composition. I sat down with Greg for a brief interview. Enjoy getting to know him! "I LOVE BEAUTY IN ALL ITS MANY FORMS AND I THINK I SEE THINGS OTHERS MIGHT MISS." - DAVID VANCE

I also spoke with David Vance about his photo shoot of Greg. RC: What did you enjoy the most about photographing Greg Carter? David Vance: Everything... his looks, of course, his personality and sense of humor, all very engaging. He has great energy and enthusiasm. RC: How did you meet Greg? DV: I can't remember who contacted whom, but it was on Facebook. RC: How do you shoot such beautiful photos of male models? What is your secret sauce? DV: It's not a secret. I love beauty in all its many forms and I think I see things others might miss. I love faces first because there is so much information there, but bodies as well can be very telling and expressive.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about yourself or working with Greg? DV: I found it challenging because he is naturally beautiful and has been photographed by many talented photographers. I felt the need to do more, to create something different than what I had seen. It wasn't enough to just make him look good, he already did. I had to bring something more out of him. He's not just a pretty face and body, he's a person with feelings, attitudes and ideas. That's what I always try to show.

PHOTOS BY DAVID VANCE. DAVIDVANCEPRINTS.COM

RC: Why did you decide to pursue male model photography? DV: I didn't. I've just always loved capturing the beauty in people whether they are models or not. Models need photos, so they pursue me which makes things easier. They are motivated and enthusiastic about what they realize I can give them‌ where I can take them.

FALLING IN LOVE

WITH KIRSTIN

ou may not know her by name yet, but at some point you've probably sung acapella with her and her bandmates, known to the world as Pentatonix. Kirstin Maldonado is the latest member of the quintet to step into the studio in search of her own voice. What she walked out with is a collection of flawless pop songs that everyone can LOVE. I got a chance to chat with the three-time Grammy winner about her No. 1 debut EP, how Pentatonix changed her life, and what LOVE means to her. DJ FR8-O: Congratulations on the success of LOVE! How's the ride been so far? Kirstin Maldonado: It's been really awesome! I operate best when I'm really busy, so it's been great doing Pentatonix stuff and to be able to fulfill myself as a solo artist. It's really fun because I get to be creative in all different aspects.

DJF: How different is it to be out there as a solo artist now? KM: This is going to sound silly, but the hardest thing has been getting a drink of water. Because there are usually four other people on stage, I kind of plan out my water times in between songs, but now that it's just me, I'm like "Thanks guys. Sorry, going to get a glass of water." It's cool to be in creative control of what I envision, and it's been a great learning experience too. I've been able to work with really talented musicians, and I vibe off them the same way I would vibe off of anyone in Pentatonix.

DJF: How has being in Pentatonix helped you in your new chapter? KM: Pentatonix is such a niche thing that whatever you do it is going to be a complete 180, because it has production in it. So I think a lot of people are wondering what it's going to sound like or if it can be radio pop, because they just base it on what I've been involved with before. I also think that being in the group has helped because having been to all of these venues and places, I've already done this before with friends to fall back on. Now that I'm doing it by myself, I'm not as nervous as I would be had I not had that experience.

DJF: What was the writing process like for LOVE? KM: I wrote five out of six songs. Producer David Pramik was amazing! It was he and this guy named Charlie Schneider and I. We were the core people and then we would bring other people in. We didn't go in there thinking, "I need to sound like this." At the very beginning of our first session we played some inspiration songs, things that we're listening to now. When you go into a writing session, you really don't know the other people. It's kind of like a blind date, and you never know if it's going to work really well or not. David is a really amazing producer because he would try all these different things, maneuver the sounds and it was crazy. By the end, we all kind of looked at everything, and I saw how I could relate each song to a different part of my life. That's why I titled it LOVE. It's about love with another person and also love for yourself. DJF: How much of LOVE is autobiography? KM: When I start writing songs, I can't think too much about a specific event in my life because then I feel it limits the way I talk about it. It's more about the feeling. Then after it's done is when I relate it to myself. At the end I think all the songs align and represent the journey I've been through putting it all together. My big LOVE journey. DJF: Is there a full album in the works yet? KM: Yeah there is. I'm very excited for it. I've been writing and will be writing more when I get home from our tour. I'm also working on a few things that I can't talk about yet, but I feel very blessed that I can explore a lot of new things that I've always wanted to do. DJF: What is your definition of love? KM: My definition of love is acceptance. For my journey and for my friends who are part of the LGBTQ community – and not part of the community – a big part of it is about acceptance of who you are and what you like to do, and if people are trying to make you feel another way then that's OK. You just have to accept that and move forward. For me personally, it's about accepting all my faults, all the bad things about me and the good things; and not ignoring them was a really important thing for me to do to grow as a person. DJF: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans? KM: Thank you so much for supporting me! Seeing your reactions to LOVE and seeing you share your stories with me means the world to me. It's been such a special journey for me, and I'm so happy to make music that makes you smile or laugh or cry or dance.

KIRSTIN'S LOVE BREAKDOWN "BREAK A LITTLE" It's kind of a "loss of innocence" story in a way, where you feel so drawn to someone or something and you can't explain it, and you don't know how to break away from it. Like at the end of the music video – which was so much fun to make – you have to let go and trust yourself to be OK with letting go and dance in the rain and have that moment. "ALL NIGHT" It's kind of like a psychedelic situation where you think, "Is this person there or not?" It's imagined vs. reality. "SOMETHING REAL" I had moved to L.A. and I was searching for something real, which is hard to find in L.A. where so many things can't be real. So it was kind of like innocent fun and going out searching for that something, and knowing what it is or not knowing what it is, but trying to live and have fun. "SEE IT" A betrayal song. Personally, I've always been naive and overly positive about situations, so I would ignore the signs that were very telling about people or ignore friends telling me I was being taken advantage of emotionally. So it's the realization that you need to back away from such negative things and take care of yourself. You can't always take care of people who aren't going to give you the same care back.

"BAD WEATHER" The antithesis of "Break a Little" in terms of how you view situations. It's the acceptance of being set in who you are, and you're confident and you're happy and you accept yourself. People are always going to say bad things about you, but you just have to be strong and be happy with yourself and stand up against all the hate.

If you're a recording artist, producer or musician and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at abarrios@wiremag.com. 22 WIREMAG.COM #36 2017

"NAKED" Obviously, it has a literal connotation, but it's actually saying "I feel naked with my clothes on." I feel like I can be vulnerable and real and emotionally open to something and not feel like I'm putting on any fake airs.

The first Whisper OUT Loud will be held in partnership with This Free Life LGBTQ campaign, which focuses on preventing and reducing tobacco use among young adults. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with performances starting at 7 p.m. Launch date and event details will be provided at wmiami-out.eventbrite.com Wire Magazine sat down with W Miami's marketing manager, Marthica Galvis to discuss Whisper OUT Loud's launch and what guests can expect during Whisper OUT Loud events.

"THE W BRAND IS KNOWN FOR ITS LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT TO THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY. WE HAVE A STRONG TRACK RECORD OF PROVIDING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYONE IS INVITED, EMBRACED, VALUED AND RESPECTED." - MARTHICA GALVIS 24 WIREMAG.COM #36 2017

Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about W Miami and what you offer to your guests. Marthica Galvis: W Miami has an unbeatable location in the city's Brickell neighborhood – moments from world-class shopping like Brickell City Centre and Miami Design District. We're at the pulse

of electric cultural experiences and encourage guests to meet new people. We offer 146 luxurious guest rooms and suites, WET Deck – Florida's highest rooftop pool located 50 stories high. Located right next door is Whisper Cocktail Lounge offering daily happy hours, specialty programming, late-night vibes and cocktails. RC: What is your new Whisper OUT Loud event series about? MG: The W brand is known for its leadership and commitment to the LGBTQ community. We have a strong track record of providing an environment where everyone is invited, embraced, valued and respected – with that said, Whisper OUT Loud is about welcoming the Brickell/downtown community and beyond. As the vast majority of gay events are hosted exclusively in South Beach, we wanted to provide the young and thriving local gay community a space to see their favorite drag performers and DJs while networking – there's no reason to head to Miami Beach to meet new people! Whisper OUT Loud will be held on the first Friday of every month, with the launch date to be announced soon! RC: What are the main elements and performers that guests will experience during Whisper OUT Loud events? MG: Tapping Miami's favorite queens, popular DJs with a following, and incredible drink specials - Whisper OUT Loud will partner with new, exciting organizations and networks each month. For the launch, we worked with This Free Life, a national movement to promote tobacco free, healthy lifestyles within the LGBTQ community. RC: Why did W Miami decide to host a monthly Whisper OUT Loud event for the LGBTQ community? MG: We decided to host a monthly Whisper OUT Loud event because there are no pre-existing events specifically for the LGBTQ community in the Brickell area. Especially with Palace bar closing its iconic spot on Ocean Drive, we wanted to provide Miami's famous queens a place to perform, entertain and be fabulous. RC: Tell us about your drink specials for Whisper OUT Loud. MG: At Whisper OUT Loud we will debut our Slay, Girl, Slay and Queen of the Night cocktails – a vodka soda twist and Red Bull surprise. We will also offer $5 cocktails featured in our weekly happy hour including frosé and local beers.

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY W MIAMI

RC: Where is W Miami's Whisper Lounge located and what does it offer to patrons? MG: 50 stories high, the sleek Whisper Cocktail Lounge offers versatile programming including themed happy hours, Whisper OUT Loud and our weekly Bounce Back Thursdays. We invite patrons to mix and mingle during weeknight happy hours while sipping on creative cocktails or party late into the night on Fridays and Saturdays. RC: Describe your position at W Miami and your responsibilities. MG: I'm the marketing manager for the property and work to ensure that we reach our target audiences to keep clients informed with what's new and next at the W brand. We're always looking to engage with locals and facilitate partnerships, build community events and ensure that we're upholding the key pillars of the W brand: fashion, fitness, music and design.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about Whisper OUT Loud or W Miami? MG: Whisper OUT Loud is launching soon – Whisper Cocktail Lounge will host the best of the best in the Miami queen scene – Miss Toto, Jupiter Velvet, Athena Dion and famed queen Elishaly D'witshes (remember when she jumped off a Double Decker Bus at Palace?). DJ Sushiman, resident DJ at TWIST, Score and Palace will be spinning all night. Come check us out and be surprised! Whisper Cocktail Lounge is open Wednesday through Saturday, with our Sunset Sips happy hour from 6-8 p.m. Our hours of operation are from 6-11 p.m. on Wednesdays & Thursdays, and on Fridays & Saturdays from 6 p.m. - 2:30 a.m.
