veryone is invited to attend ArtsLaunch2018, Miami's biggest annual event celebrating and kicking off the arts season this Saturday, September 8. Join the Adrienne Arsht Center for a day filled with fun and family friendly activities such as mini performances, a community arts village of more than 100 arts and cultural organizations, food for purchase, chef demonstrations (for those who RSVP), live bands, DJs and more. Come out and support the arts, and purchase tickets in person to this season's many amazing shows at the Arsht Center's Box Office and save money with ticket handling fees waived. For the full line-up of events, visit arshtcenter.org. To preview ArtsLaunch2018, Wire Magazine sat down with Arsht Center Vice President of Marketing Andrew Goldberg. Rafa Carvajal: What does your job as vice president of marketing at the Arsht Center entail? Andrew Goldberg: The short answer is that it's my responsibility to lead a team who sells tickets and elevates our brand through communicating our stories. Our job is to make Miami a better place to live through the inspirational power of the performing arts. It's been a privilege to work for the Arsht Center for more than 11 years. The teams in my department include public relations, group sales, digital marketing, marketing, advertising, promotions, and creative services. 8 WIREMAG.COM #36 2018

RC: What is ArtsLaunch? AG: #ArtsLaunch2018 is Miami's biggest free annual community event that includes the performing arts as well as other arts disciplines. It's a kick-off to the arts season – not just for the Arsht Center, but for the entire arts community in Miami-Dade County. There will be more than 60 free events throughout the day, starting at 10 a.m., and running through 10 p.m. There will be more than 100 arts organizations on campus – so it's a tremendous opportunity to discover new companies and their upcoming seasons' offerings. In addition, the majority of the Arsht Center's season will go on sale for the first time for individual tickets – more than 170 performances – and also available are so many shows that are already on sale. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. that day – and will be available online, via phone and in person at the Center's Box Office. However, only those who purchase in person will save some money – we'll be waiving ticket handling fees on individual show tickets that day.

"OUR JOB IS TO MAKE MIAMI A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE THROUGH THE INSPIRATIONAL POWER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS." - ANDREW GOLDBERG

RC: Why did the Arsht Center decide to create ArtsLaunch and what is its purpose? AG: As the biggest performing arts company in Miami, we wanted to do our part in bringing a county-wide awareness to the kick-off of the arts season. It is good for all of us (us being all arts organizations) when everyone does well. And we are part of this arts community too – so we wanted big attention for us as well as for everyone else. As a result of ArtsLaunch, our hope is that the community-at-large will begin to be aware of all of the wonderful offerings so many of our arts institutions have for this upcoming season. RC: Please give our readers a preview of this year's ArtsLaunch2018? What will be some of the highlights? AG: The number one highlight is our DDA Community Arts Village! The community is welcomed onto the Ziff Ballet Opera House stage (not only to take a selfie!) to experience an indoor street fair with more than 100 arts organizations handing out their brochures and ready to talk to you. This is the perfect place to discover some great new entertainment options for the upcoming season. New this year are free dance classes on the stage of the Knight Concert Hall! 45-minute sessions will include swing, hip-hop, line dancing, kompa, and salsa – plus world-renowned choreographer Siudy Garrido will lead flamenco lessons! There will also be free interactive workshops with Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet, New World Symphony, Zoetic Stage, City Theatre, and Miami Lighthouse for the Blind. A Cappella Corner will feature local high school and university ensembles throughout the day. Mini-performances will include artists from Miami Symphony Orchestra, Microtheater (both English and Spanish), Miami Music Project, joltradio.org, South Florida Symphony, Stratus4 String Quartet, Of One Mind, and Miami Theater Center. Food and drink offerings include: a Farmer's Market (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), The Café at Books & Books will be open; Farm-to-Table dinner at 6:30 p.m. with Chef Allen Susser (a five-course, vegetarian, and served family style); BRAVA by Brad Kilgore chef demonstrations led by James Beard Finalist Brad Kilgore; plus exciting food popup stations including delicious treats from MadLab Creamery.

"AS A RESULT OF ARTSLAUNCH, OUR HOPE IS THAT THE COMMUNITY-AT-LARGE WILL BEGIN TO BE AWARE OF ALL OF THE WONDERFUL OFFERINGS SO MANY OF OUR ARTS INSTITUTIONS HAVE FOR THIS UPCOMING SEASON." - ANDREW GOLDBERG

RC: How will this year's ArtsLaunch differ from previous ones? AG: This year, we have more arts organizations involved than in the past, which is really exciting for us. We're also thrilled about ArtsLaunch@Night – a free concert in the Thomson Arts Plaza featuring DJ Kumi plus bands Jahfe and Locos Por Juana. This starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes until 10 p.m. RC: Describe ArtsLaunch in three words. AG: Can't. Miss. Event. RC: What shows are you most excited about for this season and why? AG: I love them all! RC: Is there anything else you'd like to share with Wire Magazine readers? AG: Parking will be available in the lot in front of the Ziff Ballet Opera House, as well as the Omni garage. We encourage ride-sharing – the Center has a partnership with Uber. And if you're coming from Broward or Palm Beach, we encourage you to try Brightline. Please RSVP at arshtcenter.org/artslaunch – where you'll also find the full schedule as it gets closer. It's free to RSVP, and it's free to attend. Photo courtesy of Arsht Center

Photo by Justin Namon, ra-haus. Courtesy of Arsht Center

RC: Why should Wire Magazine readers attend ArtsLaunch2018? AG: In addition to all the free events throughout the day, it's a great opportunity to buy individual tickets for the season and save money. Some show highlights that will be on sale that day include: Broadway shows Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Waitress, School of Rock and Hello, Dolly! (with Betty Buckley); Jerry Seinfeld, Kathy Griffin, Que Pasa U.S.A Today, Puccini's La Boheme (a perfect first opera if you've never been!), Balanchine's The Nutcracker, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra… and the list goes on! The Box Office opens at 10 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m., but online sales will continue 24 hours a day. #36 2018 WIREMAG.COM 9

his week's cover story model, Dominic Calvani, practiced martial arts all his life since childhood with a strong background in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA, until serious injuries forced him to abandon that passion. Today, this self-described eccentric, unconventional and dominant man of many hats stays in great shape by eating six meals a day and doing high-intensity lifting at the gym with one rest day every nine days. Thanks to our partners at Photo Studio Miami, this week, we bring you an interview of Dominic with a collection of very sexy photos. Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? Dominic Calvani: I have an Italian family and roots from Calabria, Italy. I was raised through adulthood in Brazil. Currently, I'm residing primarily in Miami, but often find myself on any other given corner of the world. RC: Describe yourself in three words. DC: Eccentric, unconventional and dominant. RC: What do you do for a living? DC: I'm a man of many hats. I do software engineering, supply chain management and real estate investments on the day-to-day. Modeling and dancing are very important and fun extracurricular activities to me that add vitality to my soul, keep me feeling young and serve as an important outlet for my artistic and irrational side.

"I ALSO THINK THAT REMEMBERING TO APPRECIATE ALL OF THE BEAUTIFUL MINUTE DETAILS OF LIFE IS SO IMPORTANT, YET TOO EASY TO FORGET BY GETTING SO CAUGHT UP IN YOUR DAILY HUSTLE AND, IN TURN, FORGETTING WHY YOU'RE DOING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE."

RC: Who is the professional icon that inspires you most, and why? DC: Depending on one's definition of professional, these might not fit nicely into that category. But, Martin Luther King and Che Guevara are the first to come to mind as inspirational icons. Men with unbending character, unparalleled drive, eloquence and intellect. As tenacious as men come in my opinion. RC: How do you stay in such great shape? DC: I have a freakishly fast metabolism which, on one hand, allows me to eat virtually anything and still stay shredded 365 days a year, but on the other hand makes it very difficult to gain weight. So, I'm always on a never-ending effort to bulk up, which includes six meals a day and high-intensity lifting at the gym with one rest day every nine days. I've practiced martial arts all my life since childhood with a strong background in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA. Unfortunately, I had to abandon that part of my life about three years ago due to some serious injuries. RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? DC: Again, it's a great artistic outlet for me. I can be excessively structured, logical and serious in other areas of my life, so it's nice to have something on the opposite end of the spectrum to help keep my life and soul in balance.

"MODELING AND DANCING ARE VERY IMPORTANT AND FUN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES TO ME THAT ADD VITALITY TO MY SOUL."

RC: Boxers or briefs? DC: Briefs, without a doubt. If I'm going to let it swing, I'd rather be naked. RC: What is your favorite food? DC: Brazilian or Italian food. A product of my environment or just a humorous coincidence? Not sure, but give me a sizzling fat slice of picanha off the grill or a bolognese lasagna and I'm in heaven. RC: What is your favorite pastime? DC: If I'm going to be entirely frank here, I'd undoubtedly and proudly say sex. Followed closely by listening to music and dancing. RC: Where would you travel if you could go anywhere, and why? DC: I can go anywhere and I do all the time. South America and Spain are among my top favorites. As much as I've traveled, I still haven't made it to Asia at all. So I'd say Thailand is high up on the list. Watching a Muay Thai match at the Lumpinee stadium and getting 10 messages per day for the price of a Big Mac sounds appealing, to say the least. RC: What is your current struggle? DC: Same struggle as yesterday and the same struggle as tomorrow. Trying to become a more complete, intelligent, wise, and strong human being every day, without harming others. All while still managing to be kind, compassionate, understanding and, most importantly, contributing back to the world. I also think that remembering to appreciate all of the beautiful minute details of life is so important, yet too easy to forget by getting so caught up in your daily hustle and, in turn, forgetting why you're doing it in the first place. So, I'd say part of the struggle for me is to remember to sometimes just stop, breathe, make a conscious decision to be happy and give thanks for everything that I have and have been blessed with. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DC: Yes – love, care, peace, happiness, compassion, confidence, hope and a myriad of other positive vibrations. Stay sexy, my friends.

TOP TRAX By DJ FR8-O

SIZ

IT'S NOT OVER YET YET Nicki Minaj - Queen For a second, I thought she might be in the witness protection from Cardi B, but I should have known royalty never surrenders the throne. This time her royal highness brought in some reinforcements. Joined by Foxy Brown, The Weekend, Ariana Grande, and a few other icons of rap, Minaj is ready to protect her crown and continue her reign as the queen of hip-hop. Jason Mraz - Know. Fresh from his Broadway debut in Waitress, your favorite fedora-clad boy is back, and he's serving up another collection of happy thoughts set to self-penned breezy pop melodies. Even after six albums and countless trips around the globe, the king of wordplay still has a flair for catchy hooks and cheeky lyrics that can turn any frown upside down. I dare you to play this on a lazy afternoon and not be taken over by all the warm and fuzzy feels. Maty Noyes - Songs from a Lolita A change of season wouldn't be complete without some fresh cocktails and fresh faces on the music scene. She began her ascent to the spotlight in 2015 after lending her sultry vocals on Kygo's hit dance track "Stay." A few EPs later, she's on her own, ready to take what's hers, and she's taking no prisoners! From her smoldering purrs on "Perspective" to her confident rap on "Lava Lamps," this lolita is all about seduction, and she won't take "no" for an answer. Jake Shears - Jake Shears The Scissor Sisters' frontman is going it alone this time, but this isn't your ordinary kiki! On his bold solo debut, he's channeling some of rock music's legendary queers and making America gay again. Expect to hear a tinge of Elton John with a slather of Freddie Mercury, and a lot of the singer's signature falsettos throughout this psychedelic romp around the mind of a horny musical genius. Unlock the doors, raise the blinds, put on your heels and get ready for a wild ride!

Ariana Grande - Sweetener When Ariana dropped the lead single "No Tears To Cry" earlier this year, the collective fanboy squeals could be heard around the world; not just because the track is everything, but because it signaled the approach of her best album yet. The diva co-wrote most of it, while Pharrell put his magic touch on half of it. So expect more of Grande's sugar-sweet harmonies mixed with some spicy production.

SIZZLING NEW SUMMER ALBUMS

here has the summer gone? It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating Pride in a different city every week. PRIDE JOURNEY: Rochester, New York

When you ask how far something is from the city center, locals will say "about 15 minutes or so." That's because, well, it's true. The greater Rochester region has a population of about 1 million people, so getting from place-to-place is quite stress-free. With nonstop flights from Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) to Charlotte, New York City, Baltimore, Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, and more, the city is as accessible as ever. For a central location, stay at the East Avenue Inn & Suites. The staff is friendly, the rooms are spacious, and the entire property was recently renovated. Better yet, the location is superb as you can walk to numerous shops and restaurants all within a few short blocks. Upon arriving, the bar for the trip was set high after a visit to The Strong National Museum of Play. This interactive museum has a surprise around every corner and something for absolutely everyone. Learn about the history of toys, why playtime is so important, and check out the

estled 90 minutes from Niagara Falls and just off of the southern shore of Lake Ontario in the Finger Lakes region of New York, you'll find the truly limitless city of Rochester. Known for numerous festivals and events throughout the year, immense history, world-class museums, and its inclusive hospitality, New York State's third largest city has something for everyone. I recently explored the city for myself and my expectations were consistently exceeded. My visit coincided with Rochester's Pride Fest. The inclusiveness of the city is apparent, and I felt welcome from the start. "Roc Pride," as it's known, is one of the largest Pride festivals in the state outside of NYC. Complete with events, music, and a parade, there's plenty to experience during this week-long celebration.

Toy Hall of Fame to see your favorite childhood toys. There's even a mini Wegman's where kids can play 'customer' or 'cashier' at the beloved supermarket chain. After a full day of travel, it was time for dinner. I visited The Playhouse/Swillburger, which is an arcade/restaurant housed in an old church. The burgers and beer are great, but the tater tots are an absolute must. Check out what the special is for the day, and enjoy. After eating, take a few steps over into the arcade area to enjoy classic games, like Pac-Man and pinball, or immersive and modern thrills like the Jurassic Park game. Your time in Rochester wouldn't be complete without a visit to the home of one of its most famous residents, George Eastman. Now a world-class museum, gallery, theater, and film/photograph archive, the beautiful home and gardens at The George Eastman Museum will tell the Kodak founder's story from behind the lens. Tour the mansion to get a glimpse of his lavish lifestyle, see the famous elephant in his living room,

and learn why he literally cut his house in half. The archives house over one million pieces of film, photographs, and other cinematic artifacts or technologies of importance to the industry. With many rotating exhibitions, there will always be new artwork and exhibits to explore, along with summer events such as their concert series held outdoors on the lawn. Anywhere I go, I look to try the local beers. One of the oldest and continually operating breweries in America just happens to be in Rochester – The Genesee Brewery. Named after the Genesee River which flows through the city, the Genesee Brew House is located in the heart of the city overlooking a stunning view of High Falls. When it's nice out, sit on the balcony or the rooftop for full appreciation of the view. Plus, order the pretzel appetizer. Rochester has a buzzing art and culture scene. I've been to traditional galleries before, and ArtisanWorks is everything but a traditional gallery. This non-profit creative community space supports local artists by purchasing their art for display in their 40,000 square foot facility, containing over 500,000 unique pieces. Each turn brings you to a new theme, era, style, or collection. Everywhere you look, you'll see something new and extraordinary. After, head over to the Memorial Art Gallery (the "MAG") for an art experience spanning across 5,000 years. With pieces from around the world, the 14-acre campus features an outdoor sculpture garden with unique pieces open year-round. The MAG features several LGBTQ artists in the collection and hosts events as part of Roc Pride. 24 WIREMAG.COM #36 2018

On my final day, I enjoyed an iced coffee at Equal Grounds Coffee House, located in the trendy South Wedge neighborhood. It was then time to learn some history. I stopped by the Frederick Douglass Statue in Highland Park, before visiting the gravesites of Douglass and Susan B. Anthony at Mount Hope Cemetery. Both activists were friends and worked alongside each other for their movements. The Susan B. Anthony National House & Museum showcases Anthony's actual home where she lived, organized her community, and was arrested for voting illegally due to being a woman. The home is exceptionally preserved and educational about the incredible work she did.

Up next, the Park Avenue Food Tour by Flower City Food Tours. Pro tip: Don't eat breakfast on this day! This three-hour tour brings you to eight unique locations along Park Avenue ranging from a local staple, Jine's, to Baker Street Bakery, and Magnolia's Deli and Cafe, where President Obama dined in 2013 for lunch while passing through Rochester. (Check out the pictures on the wall from his visit!) This tour was not only delicious, but I learned a lot about the neighborhood and its history. Some of the restaurant owners were even present to greet the group and provide additional information about the food or drink options.

Be sure to stop by Living Roots, an urban winery that makes wines based on the two hometowns of its owners – Rochester, NY, and Adelaide, South Australia. They source grapes from both the Finger Lakes region as well as Adelaide Hills to provide a tasty balance of flavor. One must-see is Radio Social. This state-of-the-art restaurant, bar, event space, and bowling alley features some of the best food I had on the entire trip. I strongly suggest the Kubaneh "Pull Apart" Bread and the Chicken Kebab Pita. My drink of choice here was the "Up the Bracket" Have some fun with a few games of bowling before taking a few pictures around the totally Instagrammable interior. As part of Roc Pride, Rochester Pedal Tours provided a fun way to get from bar-to-bar. Check out the numerous LGBTQ bars, each with its own flair. Enjoy the great drinks, fun atmosphere, and meet new friends at places like Avenue Pub and Lux Lounge. For a late-night snack, check out Swan Dive, a new restaurant that mixes a classic diner with a modern and upscale aura. Rochester is a welcoming destination for all types, and I highly recommend adding it to your travel list. You'll discover new events and festivals throughout the year, and will experience the seasonal beauty from the region. Jesse Walker is a contributing writer to Pride Journeys.
