PUBLISHER'S CORNER IT'S ELECTRIC! IF ONLY FORD, EDISON AND TESLA COULD SEE US NOW.. Henry Ford built his first gasoline-powered horseless carriage, a vehicle called the Quadricycle, while he was working for the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit. In 1903, Ford founded the Ford Motor Company and the first Model T rolled out of his assembly line only five years later. The Edison Illuminating Company had been established by Thomas Edison in 1880 to construct electrical generating stations and Henry Ford became an engineer with the company in 1891, and was later promoted to chief engineer in 1893. I can't help but think that neither Ford nor Edison ever imagined that cars and electricity would be combined to transport humans in comfort at high speeds with zero emissions. Also, the irony that the world's most iconic electric car company is named after Edison's nemesis and archrival Nikola Tesla must not go unnoticed. I love cars and new technologies, so for this week's Sexy Rides special issue, we bring you some of the hottest electric vehicles from both iconic luxury car brands and mid-market vehicle manufacturers. As an increasing number of Americans are getting behind the wheel of the latest electric car models, we provide you an in-depth look under "the hood" of the newest all electric vehicles by Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche and Tesla. Whether you are looking for a commuter car that is the best selling electric vehicle in the world and the U.S., a luxury sedan or SUV, or the fastest supercar in the planet and beyond, this week's cover story about the benefits of plugging in will open your eyes to the present and future of electric cars. If you are not sure that electric vehicles will be a key choice for our future transportation alternatives, let me tell you about cars in oil-rich Norway. More than 50% of all new vehicles sold in Norway last year were electric or hybrid, and all-electric vehicles were 21% of new car sales and growing. Tesla taxis are common in Norway, along with Nissan LEAFs and Volkswagen e-Golfs driven by Norwegians – in a nation whose goal is that new car sales will be 100% electric by 2025. I am personally looking forward to when the new first fully electric, all-wheel drive EQC SUV from Mercedes-Benz hits the market because I am interested in buying one. Also in this week's issue, Top Trax's DJ FR8-O sits down for a revealing interview with Netta, this year's Eurovision Song Contest champion, who out-performed 42 other acts from all over Europe with her "Toy" winning song. In Shopping Bag, we showcase four chic designer sneakers by Christian Louboutin, Dolce & Gabbana, Maison Margiela and Vans. Flix previews the new film The Predator, and Destinations explores Philadelphia, The City of Brotherly Love, and its famous historic and cultural sites, world-renowned museums and Gayborhood.

As a small child, I was always experstages and in front of thousands of people. imenting with my vocals by singing and making noises. DJF: What was that experience like? N: Honestly, I didn't have a moment to breathe. I won the preliminary competition that chose the Israeli representative for the Eurovision song contest three months in advance, and ever since then I haven't stopped working. It was day after day of rehearsals, interviews, media events and preparations. People just see the final result during those three minutes on stage, but they don't know how much time and effort of so many talented people were put into this in order to achieve the success we had. 8 WIREMAG.COM #38 2018

DJF: You use vocal sound effects to create your music. What inspired you to learn that technique? N: I've always experimented with my vocals. Even as a child, I used to make unusual noises and sounds. I perfected this technique through the years and it became a tool of self-expression. DJF: What was the inspiration behind "Toy"? N: "Toy" is a Middle Eastern pop banger that fuses together contemporary pop, K-pop and hip-hop with the contagious Middle Eastern sound and beat. The lyrics of the song focus on the awakening of female power and social justice, with a simple and direct message – "I'm not your toy!"

here are few events that can change your life like winning the Eurovision Song Contest. Just ask this year's champion, Netta. Not only did she out-perform 42 other acts from all over Europe, her winning song "Toy" recently dominated the top spot on Billboard's Dance Club Chart, catapulted to #1 on Spotify's Viral 50 and snagged over 91 million views on YouTube. Originally written as a female empowerment anthem, with an aggressive hook, fearless lyrics and powerhouse vocals, "Toy" has been embraced by the LGBTQ community as well, making the Israeli songstress our new favorite dance diva! Now that she's conquered Europe, Netta is ready to take over the States. I caught up with Netta while on her U.S. tour to find out what other toys she's got up her kimono sleeve.

DJF: Did you ever imagine it would also become a gay anthem? N: It's one of the most wonderful side effects that happened to me, during my participation in the Eurovision song contest. Because you see, I look at myself as a straight girl with a gay story. I was bullied as a young kid for being different than others. People used to make fun of how I looked, the way I dressed and even my vocal abilities. Much like the members of the LGBTQ community, I needed to go through a journey of self-discovery when I was a teen, in order to find my own voice. DJF: If you could write your next hit song with anyone in the world, who would it be and why? N: Die Antwoord. They make such incredible and creative music. DJF: Do you have any advice for all the aspiring songwriters and musicians out there? N: I've been working hard for all my life and I'm planning on working hard for the rest of my life. Even though it looks easy, success doesn't come without a lot of hard work, drive and determination. DJF: Is there an album in the works yet? N: I'm currently working on new music with my producer Avshalom Ariel. As soon as we finish, you'll be the first to know! DJF: Will we be seeing you in Miami soon? N: Is this an invitation? Because I've heard that Miami is the closest thing to Tel Aviv in America, and I'd love to come and visit! DJF: What would you like to say to Wire Magazine readers and fans out there? N: You don't have to fit the standard model of how a person should look, think, talk and create in order to succeed. We are only here for a minute, so we better enjoy the ride!

HOT ELECTRIC CAR MODELS: PLUGGING IN HAS ITS BENEFITS By Rafa Carvajal

n increasing number of Americans are turning to the hottest electric car models and getting behind the wheel of the newest vehicles without having to worry about gas price increases or polluting the environment with harmful emissions. Some of these cars are loaded with the most advanced features and technologies available in the market today. Electric cars are here to stay and their future is becoming brighter than ever with new vehicles from both iconic luxury car brands and mid-market vehicle manufacturers. This week, we bring you the newest all electric vehicles by Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche and Tesla.

JAGUAR I-PACE Photos provided by Jaguar Land Rover Limited The new 2019 Jaguar I-PACE is the brand's first all-electric SUV. According to Dr. Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, "We have torn up the rule book to create the newest member of the PACE family, the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE. With zero tailpipe emissions, no CO2 and no particulates, it moves us dramatically closer to our vision of a clean, safe and sustainable future." The I-PACE comes in models S, SE and HSE and is propelled by two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors which are similar to the technology found in the I‑TYPE Formula E racing car. These motors generate 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque. The I-PACE has a range of up to 240 miles on a full charge of its state-of-the-art 90kWh lithium-ion battery using 432 pouch cells. It can achieve a 0 to 80 percent charge in 85 minutes with a 50 kW DC rapid charger, which is the kind found at most public charging stations. You can easily control all the car's technologies with the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system and 4G Wi-Fi capability is standard. I-PACE delivers sports car acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Priced from $69,500.

MERCEDES-BENZ EQC Photos provided by Mercedes-Benz The new 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC will be the first fully electric all-wheel drive SUV from Mercedes-Benz developed under the product and technology brand EQ, which stands for "Electric Intelligence." According to Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars, "Electric drive is a major component in the mobility of the future. We are therefore investing more than ten billion euros in the expansion of our EQ model portfolio, and more than one billion euros in global battery production." The EQC's dynamic performance comes from two asynchronous electric motors at the front and rear axles with a combined output of 300 kW, 402 hp and a maximum torque of 564 lb-ft. Its lithium-ion battery from in-house production has a total capacity of 80 kWh, which supplies the vehicle with an estimated electric range of around 279 miles, and can be charged at an appropriate charging station in around 40 minutes from 10 to 80 percent. EQC's instrument panel is designed as a driver-oriented cockpit and its pre-climatization feature ensures that your vehicle interior will be at your desired temperature. The new intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension in the EQC can be activated by the keyword "Hey Mercedes" to control many multimedia and convenience functions. EQC has a top speed of 112 mph and accelerates to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Pricing is pending.

NISSAN LEAF Photos provided by Nissan The Nissan LEAF is the best-selling electric vehicle in the U.S. and the world. The 2018 LEAF comes in models S, SV and SL, and has a high-response 110 kW AC synchronous electric motor and a larger capacity laminated 40 kWh Lithium-ion battery, which delivers a 40 percent increase in range to 150 miles. It also sports a 37 percent higher horsepower of 147 hp and 26 percent more torque of 236 ft-lbs, providing stronger acceleration from the all-new e-powertrain. The available Quick Charge Port allows charging to 80 percent capacity in 40 minutes at fast-charging stations (optional on S model). The new Nissan LEAF features Intelligent Driving technologies ProPILOT Assist and e-Pedal. ProPILOT Assist is a single-lane "hands-on" driving assistance technology that can automatically maintain the distance to the vehicle in front, using a speed and distance preset by the driver. It can also help keep LEAF centered in its lane, and if the car in front stops, it can automatically apply the brakes to help bring the car to a full stop. LEAF's standard e-Pedal allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate and stop by using the accelerator pedal alone. Priced from $29,990.

PORSCHE TAYCAN Photos provided by Porsche AG The series production of the first purely electric Porsche is set to begin in 2019. The 2020 Porsche Taycan's name can be roughly translated as "lively young horse," a reference to the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest – which has featured a leaping steed since 1952. "Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom", explained Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. Taycan will sport two permanently excited synchronous motors with a system output of over 600 hp (440 kW) that will accelerate the electric sports car to 60 mph in well under 3.5 seconds and to 125 mph in under 12 seconds, with a continuous power level that is unprecedented among electric vehicles. DESTINATIONS By Joey Amato

PRIDE JOURNEY:

PHILADELPHIA Fast forward almost one year later and I found myself in the City of Brotherly Love once again. This time was for pleasure, not work, so I knew my experience would be drastically different than my last. And I was right! I stayed at the Cambria Hotel & Suites, which is located pretty much in the heart of the city. What I like most about the city is its walkability. The property is brand new, and the amenities are very nice. Most rooms offer great views of the city, but its biggest asset is the location. I began my stay in Philly with a trip to the Liberty One Observation Deck. Not only is it atop one of the city's most iconic buildings, but it will give you the chance to get yourself oriented and familiar with the city. I always like to view a city from an observation tower when I first arrive as it tends to help me navigate easier. 22 WIREMAG.COM #38 2018

I recommend visiting Maison 208 for dinner. The gorgeous, two-floor restaurant from Top Chef contestant Sylva Senat stands out in Midtown Village's dining scene – and not just because of its spacious design and retractable roof, the only one in the city. Maison's new American menu offers cleverly chic updates on American dishes. The cocktail list includes delicious concoctions such as the "black rose," made with vermouth-and-blackberry and dressed with rosemary. After dinner, head to the Gayborhood. Yes, that's the actual name of their gay neighborhood. There are dozens of gay nightlife venues in this part of town, so it's almost impossible to visit them all. Usually, I like to highlight a few venues that I enjoyed,

he first time I visited Philadelphia was for last year's NLGJA conference and, to be perfectly honest, I really didn't think much of the city. The main reason for my feeling was mostly because I was stuck in a hotel conference room most of my stay. Apart from brief visits to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and The Rocky Stairs, aka, the Philadelphia Art Museum, I really didn't have the opportunity to explore the city.

but Philadelphia's Gayborhood really offers so many nightlife options that it's hard to focus on just one or two. There really is something for everyone. If you aren't hungover the following morning, I suggest waking up early, grabbing a nice breakfast at the hotel's restaurant Social Circle and then walking up Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the Philadelphia Art Museum and the famed Rocky Stairs. You will see dozens of folks reenacting the Rocky scene, so don't be embarrassed if you want to run up the stairs as well. The top of the stairs also offers a great view of the city.

Along the way, swing by the Rodin Museum, home to the largest Rodin collection outside of Paris. Masterpieces include The Thinker, Eternal Springtime and The Gates of Hell, plus beautiful formal gardens. For a unique cultural experience, head to Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, site of the continent's first Japanese garden. Created for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, Shofuso includes a traditional 17th-century-style house – a 1953 postwar gift from Japan to the U.S. – and a stunning, 1.2-acre Japanese pond and garden by landscape designer Tansai Sano. We had the opportunity to feed the beautiful koi and explore the house and tearoom.

After a long day of sightseeing, head to Serpico. We had the opportunity to dine with Scott Conant, LGBTQ editor at Comcast. It was love at first bite. He even invited us to a private dance party, but I wasn't feeling that well, so decided to call it a night. We still had another jam-packed day ahead of us. After breakfast, we left for The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). Open to the public free of charge, the ICA has been instrumental in showcasing the work of emerging and under-recognized artists for more than 50 years. The ICA led the way with the first-ever museum shows of Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, Robert Indiana and other influential artists. Tag: Proposals on Queer Play and the Ways Forward, on display during my visit, explores how the expanding influence of digital and online technologies, fandom subcultures and artistic discourse has created new possibilities for queer identification, changing how personal roles and forms of expressions are defined in contemporary society. I wasn't a huge fan of this exhibition. Although I am a huge fan of fine art, this particular exhibit was a bit too abstract for my taste. It's always 5 p.m. somewhere, so we decided to head to Philadelphia Distilling, which is housed in an old, 15,000 square-foot Fishtown factory. Philly's first post-Prohibition distillery uses hand-hammered copper stills and Hall-Woodford wooden fermentation vessels to create batches of Bluecoat American Dry Gin, Bluecoat Barrel Finished Gin, Vieux Carré Absinthe, Penn 1681 Vodka and The Bay Seasoned Vodka. The distillery offers a full bar and restaurant with an outdoor patio and a tasting room. I really enjoyed most every spirit we sampled. The absinthe, however, carries quite a punch. If you're in town on a Sunday, go to Bud & Marilyn's for brunch. Located in the heart of the Gayborhood, Bud & Marilyn's is a retro-inspired restaurant-bar owned and operated by business and life partners chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran. Inspired by Turney's restaurateur grandparents, the restaurant serves new takes on American classics like meatloaf, wedge salad and chop suey, paired with cocktails like the Blinker, a whiskey sour made with rye, and Marilyn's O-F, a brandy old-fashioned. It is safe to say this visit to Philadelphia was extremely different than my last experience. I really felt like I had a chance to explore the city and get a feel for some of its neighborhoods. I enjoyed it so much that I am eager to visit again in the near future. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is the third-largest art museum in the country and houses an extraordinary collection that spans 2,000 years of artistic achievement. A one-acre garden features an ever-changing selection of sculpture. During my visit, the museum was exhibiting Keith Smith at Home, the first major monographic exhibition in 50 years of the work of Keith Smith, an American bookmaker, photographer and craft-centered artist. Smith's highly personal pieces deal with his home, coming out and change. The museum library's accompanying exhibition explores Smith's bookmaking process.
