PUBLISHER'S CORNER LET’S CELEBRATE 10 YEARS OF OUTSHINE FILMS IN FORT LAUDERDALE Cinema tells the story of the human experience from many different perspectives. One of these perspectives is that of LGBTQ people from around the world and all walks of life. As a proud annual sponsor of the OUTshine Film Festival, Wire Magazine invites to come out and watch some great films during this year's 10th anniversary of the OUTshine Film Festival Fort Lauderdale edition. The Festival will take place October 18-28, and this year it has added one more day to its roster, so it will be bigger than ever before. OUTshine Fort Lauderdale will showcase over 50 films, including 34 feature-length films and 17 shorts, plus a week of fun parties with plenty of delectable bites and refreshing libations for all attendees. This year's celebrity-filled opening night will feature the film Studio 54 by Matt Trynauer. After the film, we will head off to a gorgeous, private waterfront residence in downtown Fort Lauderdale for the opening night party. In this week's special issue, we bring you a preview of the 2018 Festival, an interview of actor Garrett Clayton from the film Reach by Leif Rokesh, and 21 Spotlight Film selections so you can preview some of the wonderful films to be shown in Fort Lauderdale. You can purchase tickets to the opening night party and film, or view a full schedule of films, parties, and special events by visiting outshinefilm.com. This week's Destinations column explores the beauty and serenity of Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canada's West Coast. This beautiful city, nestled between mountains and the sea, possesses among the most temperate weather, greenest environments, and the largest population of people of Asian descent, plus Canada's largest number of American citizens. It is a great place to take a vacation while enjoying nature and delicious dining. In Top Trax, DJ FR8-O reminds us that the hypnotic beat of disco and ABBA never lose their allure, with two new albums by Cher and Chic that were made to make us hustle, Dancing Queen and It's About Time. In Flix, Wire Magazine film critic Alyn Darnay reviews Life Itself, an adult drama that is different and will challenge you as a viewer, in part because the film assembled a superb ensemble cast to tell a twisting, turning, and emotional story. Because life itself is not always what you think, we bring you a full page of photos that I took during this year's Turnabout annual celebration at TWIST. I challenge you to peruse through the photos and guess "who's that lady?" The TWIST "ladies" performed in their best ensembles by turning about their lives for one night, so I wonder if you can guess who's who in the photos.

emperate waterfront weather? Ski by morning, bask on a beach by day, not in an expensive resort fantasy land? Smugly take selfies in one of the greenest largest human settlements? Bike, like everyone else? Immerse yourself in multiculturalism? Fine dining? Oh, and English is spoken universally, often in even authentic Asian restaurants? Welcome to Vancouver, British Columbia, on the nation's West Coast, nestled between mountains and the sea and possessing among the most temperate weather, greenest environments (it's one of the rare cities without a direct uber highway entrance and where public transit and bikes are the most common forms of transportation), and largest population of people of Asian descent (47 percent) and also Canada's largest number of American citizens. If it looks familiar to you, that might be because it is also the 3rd largest film and TV production center in North America. All those cable series you watch with settings that look like a U.S. set – but not quite the U.S. (probably cleaner)... yeah, that's probably beautiful Vancouver. 8 WIREMAG.COM #41 2018

IS THIS THE REAL LIFE? IS THIS JUST FANTASY? Vancouver (2.6 million pop. metro, 600k-plus in the city) has many of the appeals that a lot of North American West Coast destinations do. It has much of the sophistication in dining and culture as San Francisco (only without the junkie defecating on sidewalks charm), the outdoor recreation of Seattle, the quirky and Green indulgence of Portland, or the multiculturalism of San Diego or LA. It's a casual, utterly unpretentious fantasy land of depressurization, lush out of doors and Pacific/Asian-influenced version of the West Coast. Only in Canada, where people live up to the trope – they're really nice here. So, how to experience Vancouver? Since the chief appeal of Vancouver is depressurization, it's a good idea to explore a city tour of the four quadrants and neighborhoods of the city. Remember that your best days here will be enjoying the rain forest-influenced, mild, lush outof-doors and stumbling into a bookstore, tea shop or family-style Chinese restaurant you will remember for the rest of life. That's Vancouver.

Asian food aficionados could eat in Vancouver at a different restaurant every day and not run out of revelations for months. Also, like other Pacific Northwest cities, it has adopted indigenous flavors and those of the sea, air and land around it to forge its own style. Salmon n' Bannock, Forage and Cardero's offer a look at the local, Bauhaus and elegant Five Sails Restaurant cover a good percentage of European flavors, and Blue Water Cafe is the place for high-end sushi and sustainable seafood. Accommodations are comparably West Coast. For more urban resort confines, there is the Shangri-La Hotel, Fairmont Pacific Rim and Rosewood Hotel Georgia; for supreme comfort, the Four Seasons, Laden Hotel and La Grande Residence are popular. And, yes, Vancouver has a solid LGBTQ community, is welcoming to the community and has a range of bars and clubs, although like many nightlife scenes today, is quite integrated. Whether you choose to indulge in the outdoors of Vancouver or the sophisticated friendly city environs, you'll find yourself decompressing, relaxing, talking to strangers and lingering over a coffee in a scenic garden environment. You'll find yourself wondering if this is real life.

CHER AND CHIC

BRINGING DISCO BACK

t's never a good idea to live in the past, but it sure is a fun place to visit every now and then. Why else would Throwback Thursdays have become so popular? The same goes for music trends. Even the most creative and original artists look to history for inspiration. The '80s took their cues from the '50s, the '90s evoked the psychedelic '60s, and today's artists seem to be channeling the '90s. Still, there are some things that never lose their allure; like the hypnotic beat of disco and ABBA. So grab your platform shoes and slip on that polyester shirt, because these new albums were made to make you hustle.

Cher - Dancing Queen What happens when a legendary diva reboots all of the classic hits from a legendary band in one album? This happens! Inspired by her recent guest spot in Mama Mia! Here We Go Again, the unstoppable singer/songwriter/actress decided to cover music from the Swedish band that made America gay again. While there's no new material here, Dancing Queen is less of a nostalgic karaoke romp through the past and more of an update to some of the most timeless anthems known around the world. From the slow burn of the title track to the Latin strum of "Chiquitita" to the soaring chorus of "Winner Takes it All," Cher seems to feel more comfortable than ever, and it shows in her auto-tune-free voice. It's no secret that – despite my utmost love and respect for her as an actress and LGBTQ advocate – I've never been a fan of her music, but this is one of those rare occasions where I couldn't get enough of it. I guess she's not the only dancing queen.

Chic - It's About Time Disco ruled the '70s, and Chic was considered the monarchy. Formed by the legendary guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, the group birthed some of the biggest anthems of the era. Generations later, revelers still can't help grinding and singing along to classics like "Good Times," "Everybody Dance" and "Le Freak" (the biggest selling single in the history of Atlantic Records). After Chic went their separate ways, Rodgers went on the produce decades of music for other artists; from the '80s (Duran Duran, Madonna, Sheena Easton, and Diana Ross) to more recent acts like Daft Punk, Avicii, Disclosure, Sam Smith, and Kylie Minogue. His latest creation brings the band back together after 25 years for a collection of new Funk and Disco-inspired songs featuring a who's who of guest vocalists from Elton John and Emeli Sandé ("Queen") to Hailee Steinfeld ("Dance With Me"), and finally releasing Lady Gaga's cover of their iconic track "I Want Your Love." The album's first single "Till the World Falls Down" – featuring vocals by Mura Masa, Cosha and Vic Mensa – brings together everything we love about Chic, and brings it into the 21st-century dance floor. The rest of the set is a nonstop boogie fest that'll make you wish it was still 1976. According to Rodgers, It's About Time is only the first of two albums that will make up the "new Chic experience." The second album is scheduled to drop in February and will "bring to a close the journey of Chic."

If you're a recording artist, producer or musician and would like your work featured in TOP TRAX, hit me up at abarrios@wiremag.com. 12 WIREMAG.COM #41 2018

ire Magazine is once again proud to sponsor the OUTshine Film Festival, returning for its 10th anniversary season in Fort Lauderdale October 18-28, 2018. This year, the Festival is adding a day to its roster making it bigger than ever before with over 50 films, including 34 feature-length films and 17 shorts, a red carpet, and a week of parties. The celebrity-filled opening night will feature Studio 54 by Matt Trynauer – "a vivid, glorious portrait of a disco-era phenomenon and tells the story of two friends who stuck together through an incredible series of highs and lows," according to OUTshine's film synopsis. After Studio 54, attendees will enjoy the opening night party at a gorgeous, private waterfront residence in downtown Fort Lauderdale. This year's Festival will also include exclusive panel discussions with directors, producers, and actors from our LGBTQ community. You can purchase tickets to the opening night party and film, or view a full schedule of films, parties, and special events by visiting outshinefilm.com. OUTshine Film Festival Executive Director Victor Gimenez reminds us that "10 years is a milestone anniversary, and we're very excited to be part of the cultural landscape in Fort Lauderdale. We've been growing steadily every year, and have extended the Film Festival by an additional day to be able to bring in more award-winning films and accommodate more attendees." Join the OUTshine Film Festival in its mission to "inspire, entertain, and educate" audiences by encouraging a sense of community with its international and diverse film program, which tells the story of the many dimensions of the LGBTQ experience.

To preview this year's Festival, Wire Magazine sat down with actor Garrett Clayton from the film Reach by Leif Rokesh. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about the film Reach being shown at this year's OUTshine Film Festival Fort Lauderdale edition. Garrett Clayton: Reach is a heartfelt story that opens with a boy on his first day as a senior in high school, the same day that he's been planning to commit suicide. He's haunted by his mother's suicide and continually blames himself for it. His dad is unable to help him cope and treats him like a misbehaving military school student more than a son – even when he's doing nothing wrong. He ends up making a friend, Clarence, who "reaches" out to him at just the right time, not realizing how in need the main character really is in at that moment. The film is really a profound lesson about how one small gesture, one act of kindness, and just one person can make a world of difference in someone's life, even if that person who reaches out doesn't realize what they're doing is going to have such an impact. You could say it's a coming-of-age tale in a sense, about self-discovery, and I really wanted to take on the role because I found so many parallels between the script and my own life.

RC: Who is your character in Reach and how do you relate to him? GC: One of the reasons I related to my character Steven is that he deals with a lot of common issues I dealt with growing up, issues that I'm sure many high schoolaged students experienced. For example, bullying is a huge part of the movie, and I experienced my fair share of it during my school years too. I specifically remember a certain group of students who would follow me in the hallway and get really close behind me, whispering "fag" or following me around the halls making fun of me while I was trying to get to class. There were a few times when I got bullied to the point that I had to physically defend myself. People made fake (if you can remember when people used this) Myspace accounts where people bashed me, bullies vandalized my home multiple times, etc. I could go on and on. I know there are tons of kids in school who experience bullying today, too, and it can be a very tough time for someone who is young.

"THE BEAUTIFUL PART OF BEING AROUND TODAY IS SEEING ACTORS, SINGERS AND PERFORMERS NOT JUST CELEBRATED FOR THEIR TALENT, BUT FOR THE THINGS THAT MAKE THEM BEAUTIFUL AND DIFFERENT." - GARRETT CLAYTON

Letting young people know that it's not only okay to be different, but that it's empowering to be. RC: How does it feel to be a part of the OUTshine Film Festival? GC: Exciting! I'm happy that Reach can be shown at a festival that supports spreading awareness about the important issues that we tackle in this film regarding mental health, bullying, suicide prevention, and coming out. I know some of these things aren't always easy, feelgood topics, but they permeate our culture, and it's important to shed light on them. RC: What do you think are the most important skills that someone must have to become a successful actor? GC: Embrace what makes you different. Once I learned how to really love what makes me, me, I completely opened up as an actor. I think doing that... well, that's how the most exciting characters we build come about. Also, never stop studying, learning, and taking classes. We can never learn too much about what we do. Acting is about people, portraying individuals and a spectrum of stories. I don't think you could ever learn too much about humanity and the world around you. That's one of the things that makes my job so fun and exciting, getting to step into the shoes of other people. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? GC: I really hope that everyone who sees Reach enjoys the film with an open heart. We put a lot of love into this movie and its message, and if it moves even one person to reach out and help someone they may think is in need, or if the story helps a single viewer who sees it in any way, then all the work we put into it was more than worth it.

LIFE ITSELF don't really know why I liked this movie. Its story structure is strangely different; it's more than a bit pretentious, very manipulative, super "dark and shocking" at times, plays hard with your emotions, is definitely a "tear-jerker," and yet once you immerse yourself in this multigenerational tale it's strangely compelling.
